Toll in Grange Loan, Edinburgh.
The Grange is an area in the south of Edinburgh. It lies to the south of Grange Road and to the west of Ratcliffe Terrace. The area served, from the mid 12th century, as agricultural land associated with St Giles Kirk. It was bought in 1631 by William Dick. The area was substantially developed in the mid to late 19th century. Many of the streets built at this time carry names associated with the Dick Lauder family.
The photo is by James Good Tunny first appears as a professional photographer in Edinburgh in the early 1850s, but he was one of the many who were swept by enthusiasm in 1839, on seeing the publication of Fox Talbot's photographic process, the calotype. He admired the work of Hill and Adamson and knew Hill personally in the 1850s.

im such a hater about perfumes. i know i never post about it but i am now. im posting nyeow. and i would just like to say that i dont trust ANY perfume that gets sold in Sephora or a department store. i cant think of anything ive smelled that has ever given me a reason to waver on this.
perfume is the most expensive cosmetic for a reason: it is wildly expensive and complicated to make
mixing a good perfume can involve hundreds to thousands of different scents in concert. <- expensive
perfume is absolutely something where you get what you pay for. there is no workaround. if an indie brand is cheaper itll be because their scents are Significantly more simplistic. if its More expensive its because they dont have a corporations ability to buy bulk
almost all of the perfumes sold in a department store are owned by that department store. cosmetics are as dominated by megacorps as any other industry perfume is not an exception
le labo, tom ford, aerin, aramis, fredric malle, jo malone and mac are all owned by estee lauder.
lancome, armani, ysl, ralph lauren, mugler, viktor&rolf, valentino, atelier cologne, margiela and prada are all owned by loreal.
diptyque, malin+goetz, spacenk, susanne kaufmann, byredo, eve lom and kevyn aucoin are owned by manzanita capital a private equity investment company owned by william fisher the son of the founders of the gap.
all of these cosmetics are being made in the same labs with the same ingredients and should cost the same (which is to say not a lot) but they dont. the upcharge is between three and five hundred percent. you are paying for the branding not the quality of the product.
the quality of the product is not very good either! because these are megacorps! use your heads!

Did you know? The William Starr Miller House is a mansion at 1048 Fifth Avenue. Miller hired the renowned New York-based, Beaux-Arts architectural firm Carrere and Hastings to design a six-story Louis XIII style townhouse for himself and his family. Facing 86th Street, the house sat on a rusticated base, the central three bays projecting from the bulk of the structure. A high slate mansard roof with tall stone-framed dormers sat behind a limestone balustrade. William Starr Miller died in the mansion on September 14, 1935, followed by his wife nine years later.  The house was opened in November 1944 for buyers to preview the art and furnishings as preparations were made to auction off the Miller estate.  A month earlier the mansion had been sold to one of the most socially-prominent names in New York, Grace Vanderbilt, widow of Cornelius Vanderbilt III. She was accustomed to the much larger home she had at 640 Fifth Ave and referred to the Miller mansion as “the gardener’s cottage.”  Cottage or not, Mrs. Vanderbilt made the house the center of lavish entertainments, charity events and glittering balls. In the 1990s osmetics heir Ronald Lauder conceived of a museum to house his collection of German and Austrian modern art.  He partnered with his friend, art dealer Serge Sabarsky whose collection was comparable.  The two quietly purchased the Miller mansion in 1994 and initiated a four-year renovation and restoration of the structure. Architect Annabelle Selldorf was given the task of sensitively bringing the mansion back to life and creating an art museum. Today the Neue Galerie is home to paintings by such artists Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Paul Klee. The exquisite home remains remarkably intact, an elegant survivor of Upper Fifth Avenue's golden age. #funfactfriday (at Neue Galerie New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjbSK-UPlti/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The murder trial of three men accused of killing South Florida rapper XXXTentacion continued at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday.
Detectives arrested Trayvon Newsome, 24, Dedrick Williams, 26, Robert Allen, 26, and Michael Boatwright, 28, for the murder, but only Allen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is a witness in the case. The others are going to trial.
Detectives say the group ambushed and robbed the rapper, whose real name is Jahseh Onfroy, shortly before 4 p.m., on June 18, 2018, outside of RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach.
All sides rested their cases Friday. Closing arguments began Tuesday morning.
Prosecutor Pascale Achille played cellphone videos the defendants allegedly took hours after the killing that showed them smiling and dancing as they flashed handfuls of $100 bills. Michael Boatwright, Dedrick Williams and Trayvon Newsome are all charged with first-degree murder and face mandatory life sentences if convicted.
“This is who they are. This is their real character. Killers that within 24 hours after shooting the victim dead and stealing $50,000 from him, this is what they do,” Achille told the jury as she played the video. “Look at how happy they look. Look at how excited they look.”
She also played surveillance video from the motorcycle shop and from where two of them allegedly stashed an SUV that she says link the men to the killing. And she recounted statements from a fourth man, Robert Allen, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year and testified against his former friends.
George Reres, Newsome’s attorney, implored the jury not to convict his client based on Allen’s testimony or evidence implicating the other two defendants, saying, “He was not there.” He said Allen, a 12-time convicted felon, should not be believed and Newsome’s DNA was not found on any evidence.
He told jurors they should not believe Newsome is guilty simply because of the video showing him flashing money with the others, arguing he may not have even known where they got it.
“He did some stupid things — he posed with some money,” Reres said. “Guilt by association is not something the law permits.”
Mauricio Padilla, Williams’ attorney, called Allen a “liar.” He said the prosecution’s witnesses contradicted each other and Broward County sheriff’s detectives didn’t look at other possible suspects, including the Canadian star rapper Drake — he and XXXTentacion had an online feud. He said his client did tattooing and other work that paid him in cash, so the video of him flashing money means nothing.
Padilla also sought to cast doubt on the evidentiary value of the surveillance video, saying that while it may show his client in the store and walking back to the SUV, there are moments where the vehicle is blocked and Williams could have gotten out and left.
Boatwright’s attorney was expected to give his closing argument Wednesday, followed by Achille’s rebuttal and then jury deliberations. The trial began a month ago.

Black and South Asian women, as well as women under 40 years of age, are the least likely to check their breasts for signs of cancer, new research has found.
A wide-ranging study of 2,000 women in the UK, aged 18 to 80, reveals that the majority (78 per cent) aren’t checking their breasts regularly, with a third admitting they never check themselves.
Of those who don’t check themselves regularly, Black women are the least likely (76 per cent) to do so, followed by women under 40 (69 per cent) and South Asian women (63 per cent).
Among these minority ethnic groups, 12 per cent said they don’t self-check due to stigma around acknowledging or speaking about the subject of breast cancer.
More than a fifth (21 per cent) of South Asian women added that they worried their community or family would judge them if they found out they were checking their own breasts regularly.
On the other hand, a quarter (24 per cent) of Black women said they don’t self-check on a regular basis due to a lack of education from older female relatives, with 14 per cent feeling uncomfortable touching their breasts.
The research, carried out by beauty giant Estee Lauder’s Breast Cancer Campaign, also reveals the reasons why so many women do not regularly check their breasts for signs of cancer.
More than a third (35 per cent) said they forget to do so, while 17 per cent said they lack the confidence to check themselves.
Meanwhile, 13 per cent don’t check because they are fearful of what they might find, while more than a fifth (22 per cent) of women over 50 years old said they are too busy to put their breast health first.
The company, which manufactures and markets a huge range of beauty brands including Aveda, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone, MAC, Le Labo, Smashbox and more, has appointed new ambassadors to help raise awareness of the importance of self-checking among under-represented communities.
The four new ambassadors are Lauren Mahon, founder of Girl VS Cancer; Leanne Pero, founder of Black Women Rising; Kreena Dhiman, a breast cancer survivor; and GP Dr Zoe Williams.
To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Estee Lauder also pledged to donate US$15m (approximately £13.4m) over the next five years to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Dhiman, who is now the Ireland ambassador for the campaign, said: “As South Asians, we find it uncomfortable to have conversations around breast cancer awareness because we rarely share our fears and vulnerabilities.
“Many of our families are immigrants who have seen real hardship in life. Despite that, as a community many South Asians have huge success stories and there’s a perception that a cancer diagnosis could disturb that.
“It doesn’t surprise me that 63 per cent of South Asians are not self-checking regularly enough and that a fifth are not regularly self-checking due to lack of education from older female relatives. Breast cancer knowledge is not passed down in the family.”
She added: “Typically, we are a community that doesn’t share our fears, struggles or concerns. We need to change that behaviour so that everybody feels confident to own their breast health.”
Pero, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, said: “There is a lot of fear amongst Black women around breast cancer and we wrongly believe that it doesn’t affect us. The data clearly shows that we are not feeling represented in awareness campaigns and that needs to change.
“I want to encourage all women, regardless of their age and ethnicity to prioritise their breast health and act if they suspect something isn’t right. I am living proof that you can survive breast cancer if you act early.”

[ad_1] A courtroom ruling in a rental termination lawsuit may kill sure rental buyout offers throughout the state. Florida's Third District Courtroom of Attraction sided with a gaggle of unit homeowners searching for to dam the demolition of their rental constructing in Edgewater, a waterfront Miami neighborhood the place improvement has been booming. The unit homeowners, who filed a lawsuit over the rental termination of Biscayne 21, alleged that an affiliate of Two Roads Improvement illegally amended the affiliation's declaration to alter the edge to terminate the affiliation from 100% to 80 %. Present state legislation permits builders to terminate with 80 % approval, though 5 % can block that vote. That is why many look to lock up simply over 95 % help. Biscayne 21's declaration predated present legislation. So why does this matter? For Two Roads, which is searching for a rehearing and has vowed to take the problem to Florida's Supreme Courtroom, it poses a serious menace to the way forward for its deliberate improvement. The agency has been pre-selling condos at Version Residences, the primary of a three-tower mission deliberate for the location. The upper courtroom's ruling final week might have affected potential financing, and has possible created concern from current and potential rental patrons of the mission. For builders (those who play within the buyout area), it may kill acquisition and financing offers within the works for properties the place the affiliation had 100% termination language within the rental docs. It additionally signifies that builders will most likely give attention to buildings the place that language doesn't exist and so they can pursue a termination with 80 % of the vote. Additionally complicating the panorama is that the buildings which might be just like have that language of their paperwork are older. The older the buildings, the dearer to keep up, and the likelier that unit homeowners are dealing with higher prices to keep up and insure their properties. These are the buildings builders often goal. What we're excited about: The Nationwide Affiliation of Realtors introduced it was settling antitrust litigation over dealer commissions with a $418 million settlement, pending courtroom approval. What does this imply for you? Ship me a notice at [email protected]. CLOSING TIME Residential: Tech investor and Nvidia board member Harvey Jones paid $74.3 million for the waterfront property at 740 Hello Mount Street in Palm Seashore. Candida Burnap offered the ten,467-square-foot, six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom mansion, which sits on a 1-acre lot. Business: Colonnade Properties paid $76 million for the five-building workplace park referred to as Douglas Entrance in Coral Gables. The sale worth marked an almost 25 % low cost off its earlier sale worth a decade in the past. A three way partnership between Miami-based Banyan Road Capital and Los Angeles-based Oaktree Capital Administration offered the property at 800 Douglas Street. NEW TO THE MARKET Cosmetics inheritor William Lauder relisted his two adjoining, vacant Palm Seashore parcels of land for a mixed $178 million with a brand new dealer. The oceanfront properties at 1063 and 1071 North Ocean Boulevard at the moment are in the marketplace with Christian Angle of Christian Angle Actual Property. Jim McCann of Premier Property Properties beforehand had the itemizing when the properties have been asking $200 million. They're every in the marketplace for $88.9 million now. The two.3-acre meeting consists of about 360 toes of beachfront. A factor we have discovered In 1941, Disney fired a gaggle of cartoonists, together with the animator who created Goofy, for unionizing. Elsewhere in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis deployed greater than 250 further officers and troopers from the Florida State Guard, Division of Emergency Administration and different legislation enforcement businesses to the state's southern coast to dam Haitian migrants from getting into the state, Newsweek studies.
Gangs have taken over Port-au-Prince, the nation's capital, because the state of affairs in Haiti turns into more and more dire. Haiti's president Ariel Henry introduced final week his plan to resign. A invoice that may have clarified the controversial 2023 legislation that created restrictions for overseas traders — notably these from China — from proudly owning property within the state will head to DeSantis' desk to be signed into legislation with out these clarifications. DeSantis opposed the adjustments, which may have drawn distinctions between individuals and companies with controlling pursuits in corporations that owned actual property, and people with minority pursuits. A difficult lawsuit final yr's legislation will transfer ahead in April, in accordance with the Information Service of Florida. DeSantis can also be attempting to ban lab-grown meat in Florida. Florida handed SB 1084, which might ban and criminalize the manufacturing and sale of cell-cultured meat within the state, Meals & Wine studies. “You want meat, OK. And we'll have meat in Florida.” DeSantis mentioned, in accordance with CBS. “We're not going to have faux meat. Like that does not work. [ad_2] Supply hyperlink

The shameful atrocity of 13 February 1692 was not, as first believed, a clan feud between the Campbells and MacDonalds, it was in fact a government operation.
Events leading up to the massacre are important to understand the massacre itself.
King James VII of Scotland, and II of England, (a Stuart and a catholic) was deposed by Parliament in 1689, and William of Orange was installed as Monarch, which would lead to the massacre in 1692, and would later spark off the Jacobite Uprisings, the attempts to reinstate the Stuarts to the Throne.
The action was sanctioned and implemented by the Crown, with approval by Lowland elites, and it intensified the already bitter Highland-Lowland divisions.
The actual massacre itself was a direct order from the Master of Stair, Joint-Secretary of State for Scotland for the new King, William of Orange.
Thirty-eight MacDonalds from the Clan MacDonald of Glencoe were killed by the Campbells, (the guests who had accepted their hospitality) on the grounds that the MacDonalds had been slow to pledge their allegiance to the new king.
Besides being ineffectual, it proved to be a monumental blunder, and public opinion was such that the Government was forced to hold an inquest into the affair.
When two advance units were sent to Glencoe on the 1st February they were under the command of Captain Robert Campbell of Glen Lyon, an alcoholic gambler who had gambled away most of his estates. The massacre was to begin simultaneously in three settlements along the glen (Invercoe, Inverrigan, and Achacon) although the killing took place all over the glen as the fleeing MacDonalds were pursued and slain.
On the night before the slaughter, Campbell was given orders to fall upon the rebels, the MacDonalds of Glencoe, and put all under 70 years of age to the sword.
He was told to begin the massacre at 5am on 13 February, 1692, but his superior officers were told to commence at 7am. In addition to the soldiers who were actually in Glencoe that night, there were two other detachments, each of four hundred men, who were, according to the plan, to have converged to cut off the likely escape routes.
Details of the events became public knowledge only because the tormented Campbell leaked his orders to kill in the days after. He had betrayed people he knew. MacIain of Glencoe, the chief of the small branch of the Clan Donald, was a friend with whom he had hunted and fished, and the story goes that Campbell died of his shame.
The scandal was further enhanced when the leading Scottish jurist Sir John Lauder, Lord Fountainhall, was, in 1692, offered the post of Lord Advocate but He declined it, because there was a condition attached that he should not attempt to prosecute any of the people implicated in the Glencoe Massacre.
The Glencoe massacre memory has been kept alive by continued ill feeling between the MacDonalds and the Campbells. Since the late 20th century the Clachaig Inn, a hotel and pub in Glencoe popular with climbers, has had a sign on its door that says ….
“No hawkers or Campbells"
Glencoe is sometimes said to mean 'Glen of Weeping', which may be a reference to the massacre of Glen but the Gaelic 'Gleann Comhann' doesn't translate as 'Glen of Weeping', the Glen is actually named after the River Coe which runs through it and had this name long before the 1692 massacre.I would assume it got the moniker after the events on that fateful day.
