Can you tell? Found this antique frame at the transfer station (dump) a couple weeks ago! It was falling apart but I still kind of loved it, so grabbed it and stuck it in my office. This week I was like I should get that William-Adolphe Bouguereau that my mom loved so much before she passed. I had originally had this exact painting and sold it to a friend when I moved to Alaska! His wife during the divorce absconded with it. It’s been a petty thorn in my side as my mom wanted it in her room when she was passing and I didn’t bring it. (In my defense prior paintings I left there were tossed if no longer relevant, I didn’t know how far gone she really was and I really liked my painting too!) lol this painting … THIS PAINTING!!! Soooo I ordered a canvas print to fit the frame last week! This Tuesday in and out my office, I thought “Why don’t I try to recreate the damaged part with wall spackle.” (Hoping I had some downstairs and planning to look when I got home from the transfer station!)Low and behold on the wall at the transfer station is a whole new tub for free! I guess it was a sign. Lol Yesterday evening I patched and recreated the missing embellishments. Dried overnight. Hand painted the patches to seal the absorbency. Then spray painted the whole. (I was rather attracted to the old gold and the patina but gold spray paint is not an easy find! And painting with gold paint, brush or sponge, also not easy) I just finished attaching the artwork and hanging it up … I kind of love it! So what do you think? Les Oréades [The Oreads] – William-Adolphe Bouguereau The Oreads are the nymphs of mountains and grottoes (the most well known is Echo), who were said to come out in joyful, lively groups to hunt deer, chase wild boar and bring down birds of prey with their arrows. At Diana’s signal, they would come running to join her, forming a dazzling retinue behind her. The 1902 catalogue for the Salon gave this lengthy commentary after the title of the painting: “The shadows are dissipating; dawn appears, radiant, and colours the mountain tops pink. Then a long procession soars up into the sky: it is the joyful band of nymphs who, during the night, frolicked in the shadow of the forests and by the still waters of the river; they take to the air, watched by the astonished fauns, to return to their own realm and the ethereal regions inhabited by the gods”. With this painting, Bouguereau shows himself to be firmly attached to his ideal of academic painting. As in another painting at Musée d’Orsay, The Assault, the mythological subject here is a pretext to demonstrate his outstanding drawing skills, capable of capturing all the attitudes and expressions of the human body. The mythological subject also enables him to introduce an erotic element without lapsing into bawdiness (the lust in the eyes of the Satyrs is, in this respect, unambiguous). With this flight of female figures, Bouguereau boldly produced a painting that was highly imaginative and suffused with poetry, perceptible in the twilight landscape of the background, worthy of Corot, and tinged with Symbolist tones.
