14th January 1742, death of the English mathematician and astronomer Edmond Halley. Halley is best known for predicting in 1705 the return of a comet utilizing his contemporary Isaac Newton's laws of motion, Halley himself had funded the publication of Newton's influential work ‘Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica’. Halley was proved right 16 years after his death in 1758, when the comet did indeed return, and was named after him. In 1691, Halley built a diving bell, with a window for observing life underwater, demonstrating the device, Halley and five companions dived to 60 feet in the River Thames in London, and remained there for over an hour and a half; later improving the design to spend over four hours underwater. The following year Halley put forth the theory of a hollow Earth, consisting of a shell 500 miles thick under which atmospheres and potential life existed. In 1720, Halley alongside his friend the pioneer antiquarian William Stukeley, made the first attempt to scientifically date Stonehenge, which later would form the basis of the science of archeology. Stukeley would later influence the artist William Blake through his beliefs in the ancient religion of Druidism, and ancient culture in England. Prior to these early archaeological investigations, it was believed that a giant race of people had once lived in England. The English theologian Thomas Stackhouse (1677–1752), writing in ‘A New History of the Holy Bible’, published in 1737; claimed that Stonehenge was constructed before the biblical flood by these same giants. 📖 continued in the comments. #edmundhalley #halleyscomet #william blake #williamblaketarot #stonehengesoltice #druidism #ancientgiants #historicalillustration #tarotillustration #tarotart #tarotartist #tarotdecks #steampunktarot #strangehistory #steampunkillustration #steampunkdecor #historymystery #darkillustration #illustrationartwork #historymystery #historymysteries #strangehistory #weirdhistory #oddhistory #historicalmysteries #darkhistory #historicalstories #historicalstory https://www.instagram.com/p/CKJiySEH0Af/?igshid=1hbptoar66kwt

June 13th 1752, birth of English novelist, diarist and playwright Fanny Burney. Burney’s novels satirising the social pretensions of English aristocrats and the politics of female identity in the late 18th century, greatly influenced the writings of Jane Austin. In 1789 during the early days of the French Revolution Burney supported the Revolution’s aims, and met and married the exiled French General Alexandre D'Arblay, who had been adjutant-general to the Marquis de Lafayette. From 1760 to 1774 she lived with her family at number 50 Poland Street, which during the 18th and 19th century also housed other notable literary residents such as William Blake who lived at 28 Poland Street from 1785 until 1791, and Percy Byshee Shelley who lived at 15 Poland Street briefly in 1811. William Blake, Percy Shelley, and the events of the French Revolution are all depicted in the historically and steampunk based Industrial Sublime Tarot, a unique tarot deck based upon the years 1760 - 1848. Prints of the cards are for sale on the website. 26th December 1716, birth of English pre Romantic poet Thomas Gray. Despite publishing only 13 poems, Gray was well known during his lifetime, mostly for his poem, ‘Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard’, published in 1751. The poems themes of the contemplation of death and afterlife, foreshadow the Gothic movement, beginning with the first Gothic novel “The Castle of Otranto” (1764), written by his childhood friend Horace Walpole. Gray was a popular influence to the Romantic poets of the succeeding generation, such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. William Blake also was commissioned to illustrate the poem by his friend and sculptor John Flaxman. 1st January 1818, first anonymous publication of "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" by the small London publishing house of Lackington, Hughes, Harding, Mavor, & Jones. William Blake had known Mary's mother Mary Wolstonecraft, through his association with the publisher Joseph Johnson. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Mary Wolstonecraft, and William Blake are featured in the Ofgraveconcern Industrial Sublime Tarot 1760 - 1848, an historically inspired tarot deck, with a heavy dose of steampunk illustration. Prints of the cards handcoloured or black ink can be found on the website, and come with an historical explanation of the card. Also available as shown are reproductions of the first edition of Frankenstein, alongside original artwork. All books are made using actual antique salvaged books, which are repaired and repurposed as artwork to be hung on a wall, for a unique display item.
