Five dollar bill from the Salem branch of the Bank of Cape Fear. The bank was located at the corner of South Main and Bank streets in Old Salem (5th and 6th photos) and operated from 1847 until ~1865. This particular note was printed in 1858. #currency #fivedollarbill #money #bank #oldsalem #oldsalemmuseumsandgarden #winstonsalem #winstonsalemhistory #winstonsalemnc (at Old Salem, Winston-Salem) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChYIcFFAf09/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

April 26, 1838
Complaints were reported about the hogs nightly rambling through the community, about the nightly noise of too many dogs, the bulls and the cows in the streets and the great number of  doves causing damage in the gardens. We wish that all this which harms the love and harmony in the community be removed.

New mural on the old gas station at the end of North Liberty Street at North Chestnut Street. It's actually a large print of a post card, which shows Fourth Street back in the 1940s. #winstonsalem #winstonsalemnc #industryhillwsnc #bestofwinstonsalem #northcarolina #winstonsalemhistory (at Winston-Salem, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch0eI7Kgx9J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Historic circa 1892 house at 712 Brookstown Ave. It was the location of Miami Cafe, which closed a few years ago. Now it's just sitting there vacant, but, to my knowledge, it is for sale. #winstonsalemarchitecture #WinstonSalem #winstonsalemhistory #house #houses #northcarolna (at Winston-Salem, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClrTy8SJYqU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Looking northeast at One Salem Tower with Kaleideum Downtown next to it on the right and Brookstown Ave running in front of them. This was the location of the Salem Industrial District. The second photo, which was edited by local historian Fam Brownlee, is what part of this industrial district looked like back in 1890. To my knowledge, every single structure in this photo doesn't exist anymore. The F&H Fries Gasworks was roughly located where One Salem Tower currently sits. The third photo is a current Google map of the area and the fourth photo is the Google map overlayed with a map of the area from 1912. Back then, Brookstown Ave was known as Shallowford Road. #history #winstonsalemhistory #winstonsalem #winstonsalemnc #localhistory #thenandnow #losthistory #northcarolna #northcarolinahistory (at Winston-Salem, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmxCo1A00R/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Fogle Flats at the intersection of Cemetery Street and South Main Street in Winston-Salem. They were built back in the 1890s by the Fogle Brothers and are the earliest examples of row houses in Winston-Salem. At one point there were two sets of flats, as seen in a map of the area from 1912 (circled in the 3rd photo), however, only one row exists to this day. #WinstonSalem #winstonsalemarchitecture #winstonsalemhistory #architecture #rowhouse #rowhouses #northcarolna #winstonsalemnc (at Winston-Salem, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cli9HLeA1Ro/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Elias Vogler Store along South Main Street in Old Salem. It was built back in 1867 and originally had an Italianate facade (second photo). In 1938 it was replaced with a Colonial Revival facade (third photo). A large house was also present on the right side of the store (circled in the 4th photo), but it was demolished sometime after this photo was taken, which was around 1950. #oldsalem #oldsalemarchitecture #oldsalemhistoricdistrict #oldsalemhistory #WinstonSalem #winstonsalemhistory #northcarolna (at Old Salem, Winston-Salem) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClhCCf7JcPN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Another relic of Winston-Salem's manufacturing past, the old Hanes Hosiery Mill along Ivy Avenue. It's on the National Register of Historic Places with the first building of the complex dating back to 1925. #history #WinstonSalem #winstonsalemhistory #hanes #mill #localhistory #northcarolna #northcarolinahistory (at Winston-Salem, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CleL7hNAiPs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Downtown Winston-Salem has gone through some drastic changes over the years. Here's one example. Here at the intersection of North Chestnut Street and 3rd Street there used to be a hotel known as the Reynolds Inn, which was built back in 1918 (first photo). It was demolished back in 1960 and the lot was converted into a parking lot. Later on in 1993, the entire block was demolished to make way for the Forsyth County Detention Center. #history #localhistory #winstonsalemhistory #losthistory #thenandnow #WinstonSalem (at Downtown Winston-Salem) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clb0bebghes/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Here's a random little bit of Old Salem history. This unnamed road next to the Dr John Francis Shaffner House is referred to as "Fish Alley" on the old Sanborn maps. Why it was called that, I have no clue. @oldsaleminc @mesdagram #oldsalem #oldsalemmuseumsandgarden #WinstonSalem #winstonsalemhistory #northcarolna (at Old Salem, Winston-Salem) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClM0fGoggMC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tried to recreate the old Holbrook and Winfrey Saloon and Restaurant ghost ad that used to be on the side of 415 Trade Street. It was removed when that wall was rebuilt. I know of only two photos of it, unfortunately they are not all that great. The one I have here was taken in 1995. Like many ghost ads, this one looks like it was painted over with the word AMERICAN replacing the name WINFREY. However, because the photograph is of such low resolution, I can't really tell for sure. #ghostad #brickad #winstonsalem #winstonsalemhistory (at Winston-Salem, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjPBWdvASXw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
