Laurel was standing outside of Neptune, checking her phone idly and passing the time after excusing herself from the world's most boring work dinner inside. She thought it was a little ridiculous that things like work dinners still existed now that she was self-employed, but a group of prosecutors from LA she was vaguely connected to had come into town and she'd foolishly accepted the invite because it meant a free meal. After an appetizer and a glass of wine, she'd excused herself from a conversation about the Ohio criminal code, telling the table that a client was calling. It was a lie, but anything to get away from that table.
She looked up from her phone, contemplating lighting up a cigarette, when she glimpsed a familiar face exiting the building next door and then stopping to get her bearings — Katrina. Laurel's heart dropped into her stomach for a second; she swallowed to try to get rid of the sensation, to no avail. She took an instinctive, almost involuntary step forward, replaying the last time she'd seen her ex in her head as a grimace took over her expression. Laurel had made an idiot of herself at the New Year's party, drunk out of her mind and stumbling and saying all of the wrong things. She'd been trying to apologize for everything, but she knew she had probably just come off like a blubbering slob.
Almost against her will, she felt herself moving toward the blonde, pocketing her phone. "Hey," she said when she got closer, then cleared her throat as she felt a nervous lump start to form. "Katrina, hi. Um." Words, Laurel. "I'm sorry to stop you...feel free to tell me to fuck off— I just..." Fuck, why did she do this? Was she supposed to jump straight into an apology? She should've just run back inside the restaurant. "Hi." Smooth.

LOCATION; The Reef Bar.
BUMPING INTO; @katrinaxbeauford.
The Reef Bar was full of life and Athena was living for it. The music was catchy, people were flirty, and the drinks were flowing just the way she wanted. What made her smile grow was receiving another message from Katrina. They matched on a dating app and had just started talking which was keeping the therapist on her toes. Moving closer to the bar-top, she found an open space, and re-read the message again. When the particular place was mentioned, she scanned the room in anticipation, hoping to lock eyes with her. After finding the woman, she was stunned by the beauty, and messaged her back.
ATHENA; I'm here too and am looking right at you. Come and find me.
Sending the message to Katrina, Athena sat her phone down and scanned the room again, waited for the other's arrival.

Zoey had an interesting day, although it feels like each day seems interesting since living in Aurora Bay. Somedays she did miss her familiar walkways in Seattle, the rainy season and just overall it was home. She was just happy at the fact she met some people who made the town seem more welcoming since accepting a job at the college. "I think if I see another drawing of what is supposed to be what's on your bedside table, I will throw up." Zoey stated before chugging a glass of water.

who: open ( @aurorabaystarter ) where: somewhere busy
When the kid had first called out 'Miss Beauford', Katrina hadn't been all that surprised. The kids she taught often recognized her in public - it wasn't a huge town after all. But then she'd seen the worry in his features, quickly discovering that he was alone, having been separated from his mother in the busy tourist-filled crowd. He was quickly getting hysterical, Kat having a hard time keeping him calm while also trying to look for someone who could help. Instead, Kat decided to flag down a passer-by, hoping they weren't too busy. Excuse me, hi." All the while, Katrina kept a firm hold of the kid's hand, making sure he didn't get lost again. "Do you have a moment?"

👫 + Katrina!
On a cold day toward the beginning of their relationship, the two of them resolved to stay in and do absolutely nothing for an entire Sunday. Laurel came into the kitchen after her second nap of the day to find Katrina in one of Laurel's old, oversized NYU t-shirts, dancing and humming along to an Ella Fitzgerald song while she made them breakfast for dinner. She pulled Kat away from the stove and they slow danced until the bacon burned and the smoke alarms forced them to stop.
Laurel once convinced Kat to take a sick day from work on a random Friday before flying them up to San Francisco last-minute and booking an AirBnB in the city to stay for the weekend. Laurel kissed her up against the base of a massive redwood, and that's when she realized that she'd never felt so much for another person in her life.
She has a lot of reasons for breaking things off with Kat — the fake ones, where she downplayed what they'd built together over the better part of a year and straight up lied by saying she'd always wanted it be casual, and the real ones, where she was so scared about her past following her to AB and Kat getting caught in the crosshairs. But she also has one deep, inherent reason that she doesn't know if she'll ever be able to shake: she really, truly doesn't believe she's good enough for Kat, and she never knew how to make herself good enough.
Laurel still composes and then deletes texts to Kat at least twice a week. She doesn't know what she actually wants to say; she just knows that she misses her immensely and just wants to be able to talk to her again.

Katrina had spotted Aubrey and her little charge first, and had decided not to approach them. She remembered how odd it was when she was a kid, to see your teacher out in public, so was fine letting the pair pass by without saying anything. But then she heard a curious 'Miss Beauford?', and Katrina couldn't help but laugh under her breath, turning around. "Well hello there." She greeted, the smile spreading on her lips, shared between the kid and Aubrey.

cw: menstruation
Katrina grew up just south of Aurora Bay, the younger of two siblings. Her brother was a typical older sibling, teasing her half the time, being her protector the other half. It was a rather normal childhood, nothing to complain about.
As a teen, Kat always complained of pretty painful periods, but in classic boomer style, her mom always said that she was just being dramatic and that exercise would help. It didn't, however, eventually Kat just stopped mentioning it, sucking it up and trying to ignore it.
Kat also did a lot of babysitting in high school for friends, family and neighbors. This was when she discovered she was pretty good with kids. Patient, understanding, not afraid to meet them on their level. It wasn't until she was thinking about where to apply to college that she seriously considered a career with kids. And this is how she settled on Early Childhood Education.
It was during college that the friends she made noticed how badly she would suffer with pain sometimes, and finally someone talked her into seeing someone, after Kat had spent so long convincing herself it was just in her head. The first doctor she saw dismissed it as just regular cramps, and recommended using heat packs and tylenol. This did very little to help Kat's mental health. And so for the next few years, she went back to ignoring it.
Katrina took her first placement in her hometown, but a few years later, she moved to Aurora Bay and has been in town ever since. That was eight years ago.
She fell in love with the town, and has worked at Aurora Bay Elementary ever since. She has made a few friends through the kids who've been in her class, which usually doesn't bother the kids since they're still too young to be embarrassed by their parent and teacher being friends.
One day, the pain Kat was struggling through became too much and she ended up in the hospital. Luckily the doctors in AB were better than the one she'd seen before, and Kat was diagnosed with endometriosis, and it was so far advanced that she was scheduled for surgery the next week. It helped, but it wasn't a cure, but at least Kat had a doctor who believed her, and would help her with a treatment plan going forward.
Kat shares her house with an orange cat named Cheddar, who is super dopey but she loves him.
