Gender and Race in Zelda Games - Pt 1

Hey, can we talk about how the Gerudo’s defining trait is their gender? It’s very explicitly marketed to the player that they are an all female race and that has a lasting impact on their culture and how they interact with other races, considering they are reproductively compatible with hylians (and is the only way to ensure their survival as a race).

Although Nintendo likes to distance themselves from any political statements, the Zelda franchise does give an insight into their views on gender identity and racial representation. I’m going to be mostly going off of Breath of the Wild (and a bit of OoT) for this.

There are 7 major civilised races in BOTW’s Hyrule, and they’re mainly based on standard tropes of the high fantasy genre, which has most of its roots in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Things like the Elder Scrolls and DnD follow a similar set of race tropes. Basically in a nutshell:

Hylians = Humans (protagonist material, has a far reaching empire, medieval aesthetic, predominantly white because yay colonialism amirite)

Zora = Elves (attuned with nature, long life/immortality, thinks they’re better than you, thin/sexy/youthful appearance, feminine)

Gorons = Dwarves (associated with earth, overtly masculine, stocky/stout appearance, b e a r d s)

Koroks = Halflings/Hobbits (smol, associated with plants and greenery, often the starting point in a story, disconnected from the world, humble people, old english farmer aesthetic)

Gerudo = Orc/Haradrim/Khajiit (the Oppressed Minority, often desert people, has an ”Exotic” accent/language, vague mix of middle-eastern, african and/or south american aesthetics)

Rito = Bird People (free spirits, archery for days, native american/canadian aesthetic)

Sheikah = The Asians (tm) (the wise philosophical ones, always has a shrivelled up old Confucian-inspired leader, are probs ninjas)

First of all, no, Hylians are not elven-coded; just because they have pointed ears does not equal elf. The way they are coded in the text is very much human.

So I’m going to elaborate a bit more on the Gerudo here for this post, since they are the strongest example of what my whole point of this is. I’ll be talking about the Gorons in another post later down the track (that’s a whole other can o beans).

Ocarina of Time is where we are first introduced to the Gerudo as a race, and red flag number one comes up: the main villain is Gerudo. The only man in an entire race of women, who has automatically assumed de-facto leadership because of his gender. Hmm. Okay then, game.

Because of Ganondorf’s actions throughout OoT, the Gerudo garner a sour reputation amongst the other races, and a lot of this context comes from reactions to Link wearing the Gerudo Mask. Many are terrified or unsettled by the mask, such as King Zora, some will comment on how it reminds them of a woman in their life, and Darunia very gruffly states how much he hates the Gerudo (wow dude, not cool). There is an everpresent stigma against them as a people, one that only compounds in the Adult time after Ganondorf takes over. In Windwaker, Ganondorf talks about how his original motivation was to take Hyrule for its resources, as his people were suffering in the desert whilst Hyrule florished. But his actions only caused them more suffering, as he seemed not to care for his people once he took Hyrule Castle, and the Gerudo could no longer mingle with Hylians, because this takeover increased the stigma against the Gerudo tenfold.

This stigma was so great that even in Breath of the Wild, thousands of years later, their people are still recovering from their collective shame (eg. Urbosa). Look how long its taken Germany to recover post WWII, and some still hold grudges against them, even though they’re now practically one of the most anti-Nazi nations ever. But clear strides have been made in Gerudo culture - they now seem to be a proud people, embracing both their strength and their femininity. But a new interesting issue arises.

It’s alarming how much suggestion there is in BotW that the Gerudo are being taken advantage of. Men are barred from city walls, and for good reason. All of the men outside of the walls are there for the sole purpose of entering the Forbidden Garden, as it were. Like the men at the bazaar who freeze up when they see lady Link. Or the creepy guy with the sand boots circling the town like a hawk in the hopes of catching a lady’s eye. There are a couple of guys in trouble on the other side of the desert you can save (from a lizalfos I think? If memory serves), and all they will talk about is how Gerudo Town is some kind of paradise of hot women, like they’re using their dicks as a compass. I hope they never get there. And to top it all off, there’s Voe and You, an entire dating class teaching women on how to interact with men, and how to walk the line between being cautious of predators, and not being Risa. 

I don’t know how to articulate how this messes with my brain, and I’m very bad at conclusions. Nonetheless, what I am trying to say is this. What does this all tell us about how Nintendo writes women, and how the changing times have affected the representation of women in Zelda? Why are there entire races who are tied to their gender? This trend of coding races to a gender in video games isn’t confined to the Zelda series either, its present in a lot of Nintendo games (if I may gesture to the Lochladies from Mario Odyssey), and media as a whole. Is this a good thing? What is the purpose? I don’t know how to answer those questions. There is always a form of subconscious meaning ascribed to the stories we tell, whether we intend to or not. I don’t know what to do with this information really, its just something to think about. And this is a starting point too, there’s a lot more to be said if you start training your eye to look for these things in the games you’re playing, especially Nintendo games, since they seem to have been free from The Discourse because of how they market their company to be so Opinionless and therefore accomodating to people from all backgrounds. But they most certainly aren’t opinionless.

Disclaimer: I do not believe that Nintendo are trying to push some Political Agenda (the opposite, actually), it’s mostly subconscious coding and association due to, as I mentioned, for us as people to express our own views through story.

Segway to part 2: I said at the start that it’s strange how the femininity of the Gerudo is so heavily highlighted, and its a core part of their identity as a race. So why the hell does this not apply to the freaking GORONS?

The battle was won, the Dwemer had been shouted out of existence, from the Stronghold hung the dark banners of Hoag Mer-Killer and her own gleaming feathered Hawk-banners. But wind was whistling through the ruins of her neck. She fell to her knees, clutched her fractured windpipe with both hands. She tried to form a word. No sound came. Kyne, it hurt, it hurt, it hurt. She tried to scream and breeze melted on her hands. Her vision danced.

She saw an elf approaching her.

She felt her mouth move. Sovngarde flashed before her eyes. The elf drew its spear. A drum began to beat in her ears. Her lungs burned for want of air. Kyne, it hurt. It hurt. She tried to speak and a pathetic gurgle left her lips. She felt blood spread across her breasts. It hurt. The elf raised its hand and a beetle was there. A ghost knelt beside her. She smiled.

She felt peace.

Her vision swam black with relief. When she came to there were arms around her and a hotness at her throat and warmth spreading through her veins and her lungs-- her lungs were full again, so blissfully full of acrid smoky air. She laughed, and the arms jerked around her. "Shh," said someone. "Shh. I'm helping you."

It was a soft, androgynous voice that addressed her. Barfok laughed again, squeezing her eyes shut, and leaning into the healing hand at her neck. All she could think to do was laugh.

The hand pulled away, and she was released. She fell to the ground, landing face-down in ashy soil churned up by the feet of soldiers no longer existent. Her mouth filled with blight, and her laugh turned to coughing, which hurt her newly-mended throat-- she pushed herself up on shaky arms.

When she looked up she saw that it was still an elf who stood over her, with a strange expression on its even stranger face.

"Idiot," Barfok rasped. "Imbecile. I'll erase you."

"I just want to talk," said the elf. "Let's talk, Barfok daughter of Fokbar."

"Barfok Maid-of Planes to you. Maid of plains. Deshaan plains."

"My name is Vivec."

"Help me up. Give me my halberd."

Vivec stooped to pick up her halberd, and then offered it out-- she took it. Using it as a crutch, and with Vivec clutching her other arm, she struggled to her feet. She was shaking all over from the near-miss and her throat felt strange.

"Thanks," Barfok murmured. "But you should have left me to suffocate. You ent very smart."

"I want to talk," Vivec said again. Ze let go of her and stepped back, clasping hir hands before hir chest.

"Don't you understand? Of all the Tongues, I am the strongest! I am the one who would sing Veloth into ruin. You think Ysmir Shor-Heart will vanquish you? Nay, I am your end!"

"You're shaking. You were wounded badly. You should sit down."

"I would erase you with a song, little one!"

Vivec frowned. "No. I think you will talk to me. We're going to have a conversation."

Barfok laughed, again, and then doubled over, hissing in pain. "Ah," she gasped, "You're the one. You're the one who got Bhag."

Vivec stared at her, wordless.

"You convinced him to leave,” she said.

"I got in a debate with him and won. That's all."

"Ah, you're funny. You're funny. I like that." Barfok waved. "I suppose now you'll gag me and take me prisoner. Interrogate me? Cut off my feet and feed them to me? I heard about the Dres doing that. Khizumet'e. Interesting man."

"No, I-- I won't do any of that. I've told you, I just want to talk."

"If you take me prisoner, take me to Almalexia? Please?"

"Can you walk, Barfok? We should get you back to your camp. You're hurt and you need rest."

"Help me walk."

Vivec wrapped an arm around her and they started walking. So this was Vivec, Barfok mused to herself-- the Dwarf-speaker, the urchin, a vanquisher of Tongues, Nerevar's right-hand. Ze was smaller than Barfok had thought ze would be, and more sombre. But ze was also, as Barfok realised, leading hir to her own camp. She could see her Hawk-wing banners in the distance, golden and fluttering. This made her laugh again.

"What's so funny?" asked Vivec.

"You're actually taking me to my camp! Gods, you're the foolish one."

"People say that about me, but it's better to err on the side of kindness."

"Kindness. Didn't know that still existed. Were you the one who killed Chemua?"

"Nerevar did."

"Kindness indeed." Barfok's throat was starting to hurt again, and she wiped her face. "We thought Bhag was dead, too, but he sent me a letter. He just said-- he said he's given up, passed Fort Virak-- disguised-- he does that--" She cut off. Her throat felt loose, rattling like a broken pipe, and she clutched her neck, wheezing.

"Crap! Wait, Barfok, let me--" Vivec pressed the scarab to her neck again, and that warmth spread over her once more, and she could breathe again. "There. I hope that works this time. I'm not a healer and this stupid amulet never works right."

"It's fine," Barfok gasped. "I can breathe. How did you learn my father's name? You called me daughter of Fokbar."

"Almalexia told me a lot about you."

"Ah, Almalexia. I do think about her a lot. She wouldn't know, so don't be mad at her, but it's rude to call a Tongue a daughter. We're sons of our fathers, men and women alike. You'd want to say Barfok son of Fokbar next time."

"Are you alright? We should keep going."

"Aye, aye. Barfok son of Fokbar. Barfok Maid-of-Planes. Barfok Plain-Maiden. Valkyr. Oblivion-singer, undefeated in battle. We Nords like our names! You ought to learn a few."

Vivec tugged her arm, and they started walking again, Barfok still leaning heavily on Vivec, though she was no longer in pain and the adrenaline of her wounds was subsiding. "Like Hoag, or Hoaga. We all call him Hoaga. Hoag Mer-Killer. Hoaga Mud-Mouth. Hoaga the dark. Necromancer. And would you like to know a secret?"

"I love secrets."

"His secret name is Fenja."

"What's a secret name?"

"Chimeri name. All these Chieftains were raised by Chimer as babes. You think they want Morrowind because of your ebony alone?" Barfok's head lulled against Vivec's shoulder. "Fenja, Mem'yet, Sadrithya-Kaania, and I am Valkyr."

To her surprise, Vivec laughed, softly. "Which one is named 'Kyne's little mushroom?'"

"I beg your pardon?"

"Sadrithya kaania. That's 'little mushroom of Kyne' in Chimeris."

"Makes sense, the Telvanni bastard. That's Jurgen. You wouldn't know him well. He ruled Port Telvannis, you know, born and raised there, but Ysmir held that territory officially. All our secret names are silly, I can admit that. Mine was given to me by a dremora."

"Really?"

"Yes, and Chemua's was a star-name."

"Mem'yet?"

"Aye. Did you know I have his head in a bag? It's back in the camp, I thought about sending it to Almalexia as a gift."

"Hm. I don't think she'd want it. She kicked it like a ball when we were in the gorge."

"Damn! What am I meant to send her, flowers?" Barfok kicked at the ash.

They were drawing closer to her camp-- her legion was small and haggard, disarmed by the strangeness of the battle. She only ever took a few soldiers out onto the field with her, and her recent batch had been erased by the Dwemeri music. But there were sentries, and she saw them point to her and her companion, and then a few began to run down the hill, sending up plumes of volcanic dust.

"Those are your men?" Vivec asked uneasily. "Perhaps I should go."

"Wait!" Barfok clutched Vivec's arms with both hands and leaned against hir. "Come up with me. You saved my life, you think we're without honour? Even we of Morrowind have honour. Come up with me, I'll reward you."

"I still want to talk to you, Barfok, but I don't want to get killed or captured."

"You saved my life, s'wit, nobody's laying a finger against you." Barfok hugged Vivec's arm and leaned hard against hir. "Err on the side of kindness for me. I want to talk to you too."

"You do?"

"Yes! To tell the truth, I... miss it. I miss you dumb elves and your Houses and your politics. So talk to me?"

Vivec pulled away and gave her a strange looks, but when the soldiers approaching them called out for their Chieftain, ze lowered hir spear and slipped hir hand into Barfok's.

Barfok grinned and raised her own halberd towards her men, and she sang out a greeting to them, and suddenly the sky was clear.

•Laurent has Jord chain him to a tree so that he won't kill Damen

•Unfortunately Vannes appears in front of him, and she's like 'omggg hey kid what r u doin here?'

•"Take this gift back imma about to do something horrible to the man I love. I'm demanding this one thing. Please.

•And Laurent HAS to follow him but he really doesn't want to, he doesn't want to hurt Damen •Damen leads him to his mother's secret garden

•"Why did you take me here?" Laurent says but his mind is like 'this is really private oh god no one will try to stop me'

•Damen and his big dumb stupid heart is like "I realized that I love you. A lot. And I like that you push me around and tell me when I'm wrong or blinded to certain things. You teach me to think past what I know and it makes me a better person. I know it will make me a better King. And when I'm King I want you by my side. I want to marry you."

•Laurent is having an inner panic attack but he's only trembling slightly and he's trying really hard not to cry

•Laurent is like "No I can't"

•"Why? Do you not feel the same" •"I need to leave, let me go"

•"Tell me the truth." •Laurent can feel the spell forcing the words out his mouth like vomit. He chokes out a "I want that. Yes. I want you."

•Damen is beaming and he pulls in for a tight hug

•Laurent can feel the demand of his uncle and Kastor.

•The knife is at Damen's back and he is remembering everything everyone told him in his life. But mostly, he remembers his brother who told him before he died: "What's inside you, Laurent, is stronger than any spell"

•Laurent lets himself cry as he repeats over and over, louder each time, "I will no longer be obedient"

• the knife drops and Laurent collapses •Laurent is in shock. He didn't see that Nikandros came in to get Damen and saw the knife at Damen's back. Damen is also in shock staring at the knife on the ground

•Nikandros has Laurent arrested and Damen is like "Laurent how could you try to kill me" •Laurent is like "no wait Damen! There's something bigger, about your brother! He's trying to kill you. Him and my uncle."

•"My brother would never try to harm me" Nikandros makes an angry, unsure face at Damen but he sends Laurent to a cell.

•Anyways Nikandros meets Jord who is like "you fuckface release my prince he's not the one behind this" and after some hardcore convincing and loyalty on Jord's part (and a tiny crush that Nik has), Nikandros (with Jord, Lazar, Pallas, and a BUNCH of Vaskian women) goes to Laurent's cell to let him out.

•"Jord better be right about you, snake"

•They go to the crowning, they defend Laurent as Kastor tries to have them all arrested

•Laurent explains himself to Damen as they fight against the guards together

•Kastor reveals how he killed their father and that the crown rightfully belongs to him cause he was first born and blah blah

•anyways Kastor tries to fight Damen but Laurent fights him. And wins. He dies.

•The Regent is like "Laurent I demand you stop this right now. You will come home and face the charges of treason for this country and your own."

•Laurent is like "I don't have to do anything you tell me anymore. I'm in control of everything I do. You no longer own me"

•The Regent gets arrested for treason against King Damianos (later he is killed 😚👌🏽)

•Laurent no longer has a spell that forces him to obey what anyone tells him. Damen is no longer under threat of being murdered by his own family. Lazar is dating giant Pallas. Nik has a DEFINITE crush on Jord. Slavery is over.

Hi there! I have a scenario where I have a female character(an Elf actually, so theres higher resistance to physical pain and starvation and dehydration to an extent) who is a high ranking military official that gets captured. Eventually the city she is being held in is under a siege(by total chance) and so as a last ditch effort to break morale, they start to torture her so when the other Elves find her they get disheartened. What would be some non-lethal ways to torture her quickly but(1/2)

(2/2) but also not enough to kill her? She'salready been deprived of food, water, and sunlight for a good three months andin a very weak state. I was thinking branding, flogging, and possibly justgetting beat by several people. Are there any other more specific things Icould do that wouldn't permanently disable her or make her bleed to death?

 Hmmm.This is going to be very dependent on just how much time your bad guys have towork with. If it’s in the realm of days then that opens up a lot more optionsthan if it’s in the realm of hours. Given the situation you’ve outlined I’mgoing with the idea of it not being more than 48 hours.

 From whatyou’ve said I’m assuming that this character is already starving, dehydratedand has been kept in isolation. Depending on the prison conditions (it wouldn’tbe unusual with your set up if she had no hygiene facilities or toilet) sheprobably would have been in a nasty/shocking state without further torture. She’ll certainly be weak going into thisand is more likely to pass out during torture as a result.

 I’m alsogetting the impression you’re favouring scarring torture for the effect it willhave on her friends when they find her.

 Given theway you’ve described her living conditions over the last three months I’d thinkit was unusual if she hadn’t beenbeaten over that time period. As a result I’m not going to recommend more beating,because you want something unusual and because in a prolonged attack it’s easyto beat someone to death/cause severe brain damage.

 Flogging,especially with scarring edged whips, would definitely have the sort of visualeffect you’re going for. It certainly could work as a way of scarring andhumiliating ‘the enemy’. It could be done in ways that wouldn’t risk her life.

 But with the situation you’ve described- it seems tome like the torturers would be desperate and angry. Torturers aren’t restrainedat the best of times but providing that short time window of the siege, withnothing the torturers can do to stop it- that’s exactly the sort of situationwhere torturers end up accidentally killing. I think that the situation wouldencourage the torturers to flog her todeath.

 Floggingsomeone to death essentially works like beating them to death. It’s very easyto misjudge how much someone can ‘take’, especially when the attack is supposedto be scarring and disfiguring. Death can occur several days after the assault.

 This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t haveher beaten or flogged. It also doesn’tmean that she couldn’t survive that sort of torture in those circumstances.And they are the standard torturesthat most victims endure.

 Brandingis less likely to be lethal as long as it’s kept to a relatively small size. Itis giving someone a serious scarring burn after all. ScriptMedichas a good post about burns and the sorts of sizes that become lifethreatening.

 Moregenerally branding will permanently disable a character if it goes over ajoint. Elbows, knees, fingers, toes, wrists, ankles- all of these can bepermanently damaged by a deep burn such as a brand. Another thing to keep inmind is that any skin full encircled by a brand might die off due to capillarydamage. So if you want a particular design (ie the bad guy’s symbol or a word)to stay as a clear scar you need to make sure that there are gaps in circlesand letters such as o, e, R, p, etc.

 Rememberthat if she’s flogged over the brand the shape is unlikely to stay clear.

 There’rea couple of other techniques that I think fit your story-

 This onewas used on Casanova. The victim’s hands are cuffed or tied behind their back.They’re then raised using a rope until the victim is several feet off theground. Then they’re dropped. It dislocates the shoulders. It was generallyrepeated several times. She wouldn’t be able to use her arms when her comradesfind her and depending on how she lands she might also break parts of herfeet/toes. I think this could provide the shocking visual you’re looking for.

 Yourcharacter would suffer a lot of pain and she’d have a very long recovery timebut with care she could recover.

 Excisionof small pieces of skin, cutting them off, might also fit your purpose.

 Likebranding it would need to be kept to a relatively small area and avoid thejoints. It’s often used in consensual scarification because it guarantees scarformation. Like branding that can be used to mark and attempt to humiliate thevictim. The wounds can also be packed with irritants: using salt would not onlyincrease the amount of pain your character is in but might also help reduceinfection. This was sometimes done using plyer-like tools, or hot pincers as wellas knives.

 Forcedexercise is another technique you might want to consider, especially when she’salready starving and dehydrated. European militaries all had their own methods,often a variant on crawling, that were designed to be humiliating to thevictim. Victims were often beaten during exercise and sometimes forced toexercise barefoot over uneven ground and sharp rocks/thorns/broken glass.

 Thiswould leave her an exhausted (and probably dirty) wreck when her people findher. She’d have a lot of muscular pain, her feet and hands might be swollen andshe’d probably not be able to walk by herself. She’d also have a lot of smallcuts over her hands, elbows, shins and feet. They’d be painful. But baringinfection she’d recover with perhaps a few scars on her hands and feet.

 Thenthere are attacks that are supposed to be disfiguring.

 I wouldn’trecommend acid throwing in this case, both because of the setting and the highchance of blindness. But cutting off the character’s lips, ears and nose areall things she could easily survive, that would be visually shocking, painfuland aimed at dehumanising her.

 The LRA(Lord’s Resistance Army) often cuts off people’s lips and ears. A quick searchwill find you pictures of what that looks like once the wounds are healed. Similarlywith a google search you should be able to find pictures of women inAfghanistan who had their noses cut off.

 I hopethat gives you a range of options. As I said there isn’t anything wrongwith the methods you suggested. If you’re more comfortable writing them orthink they work better for your story go ahead and stick with them.
