‘Androgyny’ in Fashion

Androgynous fashion started to gain traction as women feminist activists began wearing men’s outfits, such as trousers and suits. Along with the convenience of trousers compared to skirts and dresses, fashion androgyny has continued to grow into a staple in the fashion world. By 2010 androgynous fashion is one of the biggest fashion trends in the western world, regarded positively for blurring the lines between masculinity and femininity and showing acceptance to more alternative identities.

However, to label androgyny as separate from femininity when addressing women in suits is to enforce traditional gender stereotypes. To call a woman dressed in a suit as androgynous is to say it is not feminine. We as women are more than just couture gowns, suits are feminine, anything can be feminine. Fashion is not something that is limited to two, or even three gender boxes, it is fluid.

Femininity is whatever you as a woman want it to be, whether that goes along or against traditional stereotypes. Not being stereotypically feminine does not make you masculine or androgynous, it makes you feminine. Androgynous fashion will always be a part of feminist history, and will continue to make its mark on the world through gorgeous couture, which i cannot wait for. But we need to stop calling every slightly different take on feminine clothing as androgynous.
