"ROBS POLICE BURIAL FUND JAIL CONSTABLE 3 MONTHS," Toronto Star. September 1, 1943. Page 2. ---- Frank Young With 15 Years Service Also Steals $402 --- PLEADS GUILTY ---- A Police Court, City Hall. Magistrate Browne. Frank Young, a Toronto police constable with 15 years service, appeared before Magistrate Brown and pleaded guilty to one charge of stealing $402 from the Toronto police amateur athletic association and a second charge of stealing $34 from the Police Burial fund.

He was sentenced to three months on each charge to run concurrently. "In imposing sentence I am taking into consideration your previous good record and the fact restitution has been made in full," declared his worship.

Inspector Robert Anderson stated Young sold tickets for the police games In July and did not turn in the money. "He also collected money for the Burial fund and did not turn that money in," witness said.

Young had nothing to say.

"You are liable to kill some person," remarked his worship to Gladys Wyatt, who pleaded guilty of careless driving. She admitted being convicted a few weeks ago on a similar charge.

She was fined $50 or 30 days and a recommendation made that her permit be cancelled for six months.

P.C. Alfred Thompson said the woman driving north on Homewoed Ave. did not stop and proceeded east on Wellesley St. in a zig-zar manner. "She had been drinking." he said.

"I had three pints of beer," asserted accused.

One month in jail was the penalty given H. Bodkin, who pleaded guilty under the national selective service regulations of failing to report for military training when notified.

James Butier, enforcement officer, questioned by John Robinette, special crown counsel, told court accused was medically examined in May, 1942, and found fit.

"He applied for and received deferments until April, 1943. He was notified to report for training on May 7 and failed to do so." said Mr. Butler.

Constable Clish, R.C.M.P. told of searching the home of Neiffe Steven, on July 6 and finding the order to report for training belonging to accused.

Sergt. H. Spanton, R.C.M.P., told of questioning accused. "He said he left his order to report in the national selective service offices, Bay St. He told me that he did not know Naiffe Steven or that he ever had any dealings with him," stated Sergt. Spanton.

Convicted under wartime prices and trade board regulations with having five food rationing books not issued to him. Leo Smith, who has a long record, was sentenced to four months.

L. Leung said he parked his car on Dundas St. near Jarvis St. Aug 21 and returned to find it had been entered and the five books stolen.

"I had accused in No. 4 station on another matter. I searched him and found the ration books," said Det-Sergt. Ewing Smith said he had been drinking and did not know how he got the books.

"Where were you born?" asked Magistrate Browne when a man pleaded guilty of stealing three pairs of hose.

"Denmark," replied accused.

"That is a good country and there are some fine men there," declared the court. The accused, a first offender, was given suspended sentence.

For failing to notify the national selective service officials of his address to which mail could be delivered, Albert McKercher was fined $50 or one month Evidence of P.C. John Pratt. R.C.M.P. was that accused moved from his address same months ago and did not notify the registrar. "A notice was sent to him ordering hind to report for medical examination for the army, and it was returned," he said.

ADMITS FOUR COUNTS --- County Police Court, Adelaide St., Magistrate Keith Norman Hutchinson, 16, pleaded guilty of attempted breaking and entering and to three charges of theft. He was remanded a week for sentence. When asked by the court if he had any excuse to offer he said: None, your honor. I was broke, that's all."

Detective Masters, East York, testified accused was picked up in Timmins over the week-end. "I had issued a warrant on Aug. 16 following an attempted break-in on Woodbine Ave. Nothing was taken and a second charge of stealing $34 but on Aug. 20, the same store was robbed of cigarettes and $145. On Aug. 24 the Edgewater Beach Pavilion was entered and cigarettes and $19 taken." Masters said.

Corporal Clark told court accused was wanted on a charge of false declared attestation and being AWOL. "Accused was sworn into the army Aug. 10 at Timmins, under the name of his brother. S. J. Hutchinson. He had used his brother's registration card. We desire that he be turned over to the army after the civil authorities are through," the witness said.

Accused's mother testified that he had always been "a good boy." "It is his first offence, I am remanding him for a week for sentence." ruled court.
