Barbie Sarcophagus - The Story
“Barbie Sarcophagus” was my senior capstone project completed as a requirement for my BFA from Rogers State University. I am an artist, recently graduating from the University of Tulsa, with a MFA in Ceramics, the terminal degree in Art.
When creating this piece, I was inspired by my recent trip to Italy, viewing the elaborate marble carvings and tributes to the dead in fabulous displays of public art. Death was on my mind. I had recently lost my beloved father, Robert Brady, who died of cancer in 2011. When designing his tombstone, to be installed in the Wagoner Elwood cemetery, I noticed that many headstones were plain and unoriginal.  I felt that cemeteries could be better used, as repositories of public art. Holister Monument in Claremore fabricated my father’s tombstone, paying great attention to my family’s custom requests. I went to Holister for help in sourcing and creating this piece.
The Chinese fabricators, classically trained, had a difficult time complying with Barbie’s inhuman dimensions. I provided several models and mark-ups, correcting their drawings. I had allowed extra fabrication and shipment time for my project, but it soon became behind schedule. Holister requested that the fabricator send daily images of the progress.  One day I received a frantic call from Kory Holister.  He hesitantly informed me that he had forwarded the daily image without reviewing it.  The image contained my Barbie with a “crude male body part,” as he referred to it. Barbie had a penis.  My professors and fellow students understood the meaning and implications behind this gesture. Of course, the sculptor’s work was corrected, but the message tied in perfectly with the meaning behind my artwork.
The form is gymnast Barbie, unclothed, with long flowing hair and a crown. Her arms lie by her side, exposing her torso, a nontraditional pose signifying confidence. There is nothing sensual about her appearance.  She lies prone on a large unmarked box-like sarcophagus, made of China Jet Black granite, installed in Woodlawn cemetery in Claremore, Oklahoma. Viewers are intrigued by the mystery. I wanted to install Barbie in the cemetery in Wagoner, Oklahoma, since my studio is there and it’s my parent’s home town. Nevertheless, the city of Wagoner does not allow new installations of mausoleums.  I chose Claremore because I lived there at the time.  Besides, it’s the town where I became an artist.
Barbie’s form, with long legs, narrow waist, and large bust, represent the feminine ideal.  Yet, her measurements aren’t human. As an example, if Barbie were life size, her legs would be two feet longer than a typical woman her size. The cultural ideals of beauty, ivory skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes were lauded by Petrarch, a 15th century poet.
Eve, the first woman, and Mary, mother of Jesus, represent feminine ideals of our past. Barbie is the feminine ideal of our time.
Barbie was brought to the United States from Germany by the wife of the head of the toy maker, Mattel. She was a doll developed by the Nazis, under Hitler's order, as sort of a comfort doll to address the problem of sexually transmitted diseases in the German military, Prototypes were made, but they weren’t ever distributed to the German soldiers. The mold-maker used the prototype to manufacture a doll sold to men in German barber shops, after the war ended.  The same doll that was later brought to America and renamed "Barbie," after the Mattel family’s daughter. Hitler and the Nazis created the Barbie doll, for men.
Barbie is also my alter ego and nemesis. My childhood, my family life, and my adult life in the corporate world are intertwined with her patriarchal baggage.
As a child, I spent hours making up scenarios for my play with multiple Barbie dolls. My creativity was sparked in the second grade, when I learned to sew using Barbie as a model. My family had farm roots, and strong patriarchal tenets. For three generations, the family farm was passed down to the male child, even though there were female offspring.
Barbie represents the women in my family.  Barbie was hurt by a man in a secret, private, and sad manner. This hurt has greatly impacted several generations in a negative way. Nothing was done to remedy this hurt. Nothing was done.
I didn’t know about Barbie’s secrets as a child.  As I grew into a woman and my body changed, Barbie was there, garnering unwanted attention from men and boys. In many instances, I became the passive objectified doll. I learned misogyny.  I learned to hate the passivity, the objectification, of women.  As a female executive in a traditional male role, my inner Barbie wanted to become the active subject, the cultural man. I wanted to have credibility, authority, and the assumption of competence.
Now that I’m older, I have studied and understand the ways that our culture views women.  I am an activist for feminism, understanding that all women, and men, should be treated as human.  It hurts the whole if we don’t fully embrace each other, allowing individuals to grow and contribute to their maximum potential.
In the end, Barbie wears a crown. She has overcome the obstacles of patriarchy, and misogyny. Barbie has healed the personal hurt.  She is good. The bad associated with Barbie is dead and buried. Future generations will benefit.

Helping Spirits Inside Woodlawn Cemetery H.O.P.E. Paranormal has fellow ghost hunter John from another paranormal group accompany the team as they visit Woodlawn Cemetery on Nov 30th 2013. He brought along with him an Angel Box or sometimes called an Angel Station to try out. It was a new piece of equipment and very effective as the first 3 min of the video are only that device. The group helped a woman along with many other spirits that were vagrants and homeless when alive. Some of the best EVP's recorded to date.
