Pussy Riot to Receive 2023 Woody Guthrie Prize
- “Usually when Pussy Riot gets added to lists, it’s not always a good thing, but we are honored to be on this one,” group says
Pussy Riot are the 2023 recipients of the Woody Guthrie Prize.
The annual award recognizes artists who exemplify Guthrie’s life by “speaking for the less fortunate” and/or “serving as a positive force for social change.”
“There are no contemporary artists more worthy of this recognition than Pussy Riot,” Guthrie Center Director Cady Shaw said in a statement. “They have paid a very personal price for speaking their minds on the most serious issues of our time, yet they continue to fight for justice and freedom.”
The award ceremony is May 6 prior to Pussy Riot’s first performance in Tulsa, Okla.
The Russian collective’s members said they believe Guthrie “would love Pussy Riot’s anti-fascist message” and called the prize “fitting” in a statement.
“Usually when Pussy Riot gets added to lists, it’s not always a good thing, but we are honored to be on this one,” they said.
“Anyone can be Pussy Riot. Riot. Riot. Resist,” they added. “Oh, and a quick reminder to Vladimir Putin and anyone who supports his Z regime - all you fascists are bound to lose.”
Pussy Riot joins previous prize winners including Joan Baez, Chuck D, Kris Kristofferson, Norman Lear, John Mellencamp, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen and Mavis Staples.

… Let‘s face it - the patriarchy must be knackered by now. It‘s been 100,000 years without even so much as a tea break: men have been flat out ruling the world. They have been balls to the wall …

Tulsa Day 2 Music
Today we haven't been far but have visited the two music museums virtually next to our hotel which is in the arts area of the city. Firstly we met up with Bob who took us to the Woody Guthrie archives. Guthrie was an Oklahoma born musician who literally sang about what he saw as he travelled the US much of the time as a hobo after the great Dustbowl experience in the state and the Great Depression combined to leave many locals fighting for existence and heading west to California. Guthrie was amongst these and wrote his songs very much about the hardships of life that he saw whilst on the road and indeed about his own life and marriages which were not all happy. He died of Huntingdon's disease sadly but he was a great influencer of many musicians including our own John Lennon and I was surprised to learn, for Billy Bragg. However, it was the US folk/blues/rock scene that he was most famed for influencing and the likes of Jon Cougar Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan who insisted that his own archive be sited next to Guthrie's. The exhibition was as much about US social history during the Great Depression and War years and the dustbowl fatality as much as the music and was really interesting.
We met with Sally for lunch at a nearby soul food cafe which was amazing and very filling. I have now tried fried green tomatoes (I've seen the film of that name!) and the southern fried chicken and gravy was much better than KFC.
After lunch it was back to the Bob Dylan archive next to the Guthrie one. This was more about the music than the man and it was really fun to recognise as many songs as I did whilst watching video clips of his life and work. And of course Dylan is the one musician who has won the Nobel Prize for Literature - now there's a quiz question if you needed one!

Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova Laughs Off Possible Criminal Charges: ‘It’s All You Can Do’
"My job is to hurt Putin as much as possible," artist and activist says of her recent Putin's Ashes installation, which has raised the ire of the Russian.

"I don’t believe in fear. I don’t think it’s a good useful emotion to experience when you go against the dictator because it’s their primary tool. And it’s the reason why they tried to kill my ex-husband [Pyotr Verzilov]; they tried to kill my friend, Alexei Navalny. This is why they put him in jail, to make us all fear. If you collectively refuse to fear, then it’s going to be Putin’s last day." [Editor’s note: Officially, doctors have said there was a “high plausibility” that Verzilov was poisoned, though the Russian foreign ministry did not comment when CNN inquired about it. Navalny’s lawyer has said he’s been deprived of medical attention while imprisoned.]
So you’re still a Russian citizen? "Yeah. I’m Russian citizen, this is the only passport I have, which is really unfortunate, because I cannot travel to the country I love, Ukraine. I cannot be helpful there anyhow. Because currently, they don’t let anyone with a Russian passport in."
Do you see yourself ever stopping speaking out against Putin? "Well, if he’s tried as a war criminal in the International Criminal Court of the Hague, then I’ll happily focus on something else. But before that, I’ll just continue pushing."
