Wheel of Time; Feminism vs Egalitarianism

In light of a recent reddit discussion I had where someone was complaining about Judkins deciding to turn WoT into a political platform, I wanted to discuss the philosophies that underpin WoT and why the TV show _has_ to be feminist if it is going to be true to Jordan’s source material. Apologies for the long text post.

First, the world in Wheel of Time is one where the Edenic Fall has been genderswapped. Rather than Eve being responsible for the end of paradise, in WoT, Dudes are responsible for the breaking of the world and everyone knows it. This knowledge provides a base for men to be discriminated against in all of Randland. Misandrist and Matriarchal power structures are the almost universal norm. This switch has a unique effect on the definitions of “conservative” and “progressive” within the context of Randland. Conservative groups, like the RED Ajah, seek to conserve the norm. Where hating men in THE REAL WORLD might map onto extreme “Feminist” groups IRL, in Randland, these groups are not Feminist, but Conservative. “Progressive” groups, like the Blue Ajah, seek to progress from the prejudice against men, and, for all their efforts are problematic allies, but allies nonetheless. Second, I’ve seen some responses to Jordan’s push toward equality between Men and Women that label it “Egalitarian.” This labeling is incorrect. Egalitarianism was a socio-political movement that centered on owning property. Egalitarianism does not consider gender. Egalitarianism tends to refer to financial and political realms, and not focus on aspects of identity regarding individual people. Egalitarianism erases those. Egalitarianism is about equality, sure, but it dismisses gender. GENDER CANNOT BE DISMISSED IN WHEEL OF TIME. Robert Jordan’s tying of Saidar and Saiden to Female/Male disallows interpreting the agents of equality within Randland as agents of “Egalitarianism.” The equality advocated for in Wheel of Time fundamentally involves gender. IE, restoring the Gender Balance, not dismissing gender so everyone can own a house. Therefore, any understanding of the push to balance Men and Women cannot be attributed to any political movement that denies gender. The books are feminist. This is not a liberal attempt to hijack a story and force a narrative. If the TV show roots itself in Robert Jordan’s work, the TV show must be Feminist too. Women being in charge in Randland isn’t an act of feminism. They don’t need feminism, because they have all the power. Robert Jordan’s depictions of strong and complex female characters in the 90s and early 2000s IS feminist. Showing an audience a fantasy world where women are powerful and complex is feminist.  TL;DR: Elaida is not a RadFem, Elaida is a Good ole Boy Moiraine is not Ayn Rand, Moiraine is a Social Justice Warrior
