Inventory System
I decided I wanted to create an inventory system, for when the player picks up items/clues around the end house.
Tumblr media
First, I created a widget blueprint, and added an overlay, border image and wrapbox. This is going to display the main inventory UI.
Tumblr media
Next, I designed the item boxes that would be in the inventory. I added a text block, as I wanted the player to be able to stack multiple items and it display how many they have, as shown above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I created a new actor component and added this to the first person character blueprint.
Tumblr media
Then, I created an item structure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I created an actor blueprint with an item structure variable. This allows me to add items to the game that the player can pick up, while also being able to control if its stackable or not.
Tumblr media
Inside the items construction script, I made it so it simulated physics and displayed the static mesh I set as the actors static mesh.
Tumblr media
Next, I went inside the inventory component, and used this code to make it so if the player presses "I", the inventory widget is displayed and if they press it again, it's removed from their screen.
Tumblr media
Next, I went into the slot widget and used the code above that makes it so when an item is picked up, it's stored into the inventory system.

Next, I used the code above to make the picking up system. When the player presses "E", first it checks what is around the player. If it's something that can be picked up, the code checks how much the player has already, if its stackable and if they have enough space in their inventory. Next, it picks it up assigns the thumbnail and item name in the inventory widget then destroys the actor.
At first, I had a bug where the code worked but i had a lot of errors. This was because it was still checking using the "for each loop" node even when the actor was destroyed. I fixed this by using a "Is Valid?" node.

Finally, I used the code above to make it so the player could drop the items from the inventory.

Adding an inventory system
Add a new folder called "Inventory" (for convenience).
Tumblr media
2. Inside Inventory, add another folder called "Widget" (or whatever you wanna call it)
Tumblr media
3. Go inside this folder, right click -> User Interface -> Widget Blueprint
Tumblr media
4. Click "User Widget" and name it "WB_Inventory"
Tumblr media
5. Double click WB_Inventory to open up this screen
Tumblr media
6. Search for "Canvas Panel"
Tumblr media
Drag and drop it under "WB_Inventory"
Tumblr media
7. Search for "overlay" and drag and drop it onto the screen
Tumblr media
8. Resize it and move it into wherever you want it to be and anchor it
Tumblr media
The anchor option is the first setting that pops up on the right hand menu. This tutorial chose to anchor it in the bottom left of the screen. You can choose whichever placement you want it to be in.
9. Search for "border" and drag it inside of the "overlay" folder.
Tumblr media
10. Go to the right side menu and click "fill horizontally" and "fill vertically"
Tumblr media
11. Search for "image" and drag it inside the "border" folder.
Tumblr media
11. Select the "image" and go back to this menu on the right side. Select "brush" (which is under appearance) and select "tint" and choose a colour you like.
Tumblr media
12. Go to "Padding" and change it to 2.0. There will be a thin white outline if you keep it at 2.0. If you don't want any border change it to 0
Tumblr media
13. Search for "wrap box" and drag it inside of "Overlay"
Tumblr media
14. Select "Wrapbox", go to the top right setting, change the name to "wrapbox" and click the checkbox called "Is variable"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
15. Click "compile" and "save"
