Can you believe the illustrations in this book?! Let me just tell you that the author and illustrator Schim Schimmel hand painted all the illustrations in this book using acrylics. Isn’t that incredible? This book is so on point right now despite being published in 1994. It is written in the style of a letter addressed to the children of the Earth from Mother Earth, expressing the wonders of our world and the importance of caring for it. It’s highly emotive and you can hear the desperation emphasised from the POV of Mother Earth seeing herself being polluted and her living things driven to extinction. I’ve read this book many times to classes throughout my time as a teacher and whilst reading it, you could honestly hear a pin drop in the room. Children as young as 5 were gripped by this book and the plight of Mother Earth. We used it as a discussion point to identify what we can do to help look after our plant and the creatures on it. You too could use this book as a catalyst for discussions surrounding the topic and also as a writing stimulus to write a letter in response. Such a beautiful and treasured read.
