Stress was becoming the norm for Albert. That night, while his sleep was disturbed by the thought that very soon his country would be at war with Germany, not falling for the same notion that ‘it will never happen’ as his father had in the first war, his mind ticking over the numbers of the dead from the last war and the numbers of the dead if they declared war that next day.
Against better judgement, Albert managed to escape the courtiers and staff, taking just a single driver with him to the Abbey. There, he sat, coat closed tight around him and head bowed in prayer, desperate to avoid war, desperate to find some assurance that it wouldn’t come to that and completely unaware that he wasn’t alone in the nave.
