Here is the truth that no one ever tells you about when you get a book idea...The idea can be amazing but the actual thought of sitting down and bringing that story to life can be terrifying! . In May of 2018 I took this picture. It was after I’d sold Across a Broken Shore on proposal. There were actually only 50 pages of the book written at that time. I took the trip to San Francisco as research. I understood I could never fully write the story unless I walked the Golden Gate Bridge and experienced what it felt like to be out in that element. With each step I took though, a terror sunk deeper into my chest. All I could think about was how was I going to do this story justice? The sheer volume of research alone was daunting, not to mention getting Willa’s story right. . I know for any writer getting that first draft down, pulling the story out of your head, can be terrifying. I think it’s why most people never finish a book. To be honest though, with EVERY story there is that element of terror at the beginning. How do you get through it? My approach is to just get one scene down at a time. You know how the book opens? Write it down. You know what the “All is lost” chapter looks like? Put it on the page. . There is no exact science to this job (I wish there was!) All you can really do is get the story out of your head. Yes, it will be messy. Of course it will be poorly written. The important point is that once it’s down you have a story to work with. Get to that point and the terror in your chest will lessen a bit, I promise. . What about you? How do you combat that terror when outlining a new book idea? AuthorLifeMonth Day 21: Greatest Writing Strength. I’m a very visceral writer. My hope is to put the reader right in the scene with my characters. I want them to see what they see. Smell what they smell. Feel what they feel.
