Q: What was the last signed book you ordered or had signed in person?. 💎 On Friday, February 17, I went to Books of Wonder for the Revelle by Lyssa Mia Smith launch event! She was in conversation with Lauren Blackwood, Rochelle Hassan, and Meg Long. This event was so good, I loved the conversation and learning more about Revelle. ✨ Since the book is set in the 1920s, of course I had to dress the part for this event too! Any excuse to wear my flapper dress, and I received a lot of compliments on it. It was a fun event and I'm really glad I was able to go. 💃 If you haven't noticed yet, I'm a big fan of Moulin Rouge - Revelle is Moulin Rouge inspired but with MAGIC, lots of magic! And lots of family love for Luxe Revelle - I loved the relationship Luxe has throughout the story with her cousins - it was so heartwarming. There are a few different magical families on Charmant, the island just a ferry ride from New York - and some of the powers include being able to charm and make the customers desires (seemingly) come true, time-travel, healing, mind-reading, and making food or drink the best you've ever had. But of course, all this magic comes with a cost to the user. I did a teen book event recently and was a little crushed when a reader in the group informed me that due to some personal issues she could only read books in audio format and my books weren’t available in that format. She still participated in the amazing conversation, but I still wished she could have read my book. But now, I am happy to say that my debut, Nothing But Sky will soon be available in audiobook!You better believe that as soon as I get my hand on a copy, I’ll be sending it to that sweet reader! Then the invading pirates find a cabin boy below decks. Then they find out, it's not a cabin boy. It's Alosa. She bargains her capture for the safety of her crew and for her possessions to be taken with her as she is a Princess after all. As we continue reading we see Riden interrogating her. We also see them being attracted to each other. 😏 We also see Alosa become sloppy and desperate, exactly like the men she loathes! Alosa was trained by the one and only Pirate King, her father. So she's quicker and stronger. But she also has a secret, a secret that you pretty much know if you know the sequel to this book. Alosa cares for people and is merciful, but she also believes in revenge. She does everything in her power to please her father while also protecting those she loves. I just recently read this beauty and enjoyed it a lot! Here’s my quick review: A blend of 18th century Austrian history and faery magic that feels like a spin on Narnia or Sleeping Beauty, Kingdom of Back will definitely enchant a lot of readers! Marie Lu’s writing is absolutely stunning and excellently illuminates a figure in history that deserves a lot more recognition for her musical achievements. Though many YA fantasy books are labeled or marketed as “feminist,” I felt like this book actually embodies feminist values in Nannerl, who learns what it means to support other women, how to subvert a system that effectively prevents her from doing what she loves (composing), and how to speak out for what she deserves while remaining true to herself. Unfortunately, as a fantasy reader, I was disappointed that I found the magical faery elements of this book much less compelling than the historical storyline. I think many people won’t be bothered by this, but the plot is slow, and the action scenes are quickly resolved so that the Kingdom of Back felt atmospheric and pretty to read about, but not particularly suspenseful or action-packed. I definitely found myself drifting off and wanting to skim past certain sections. The plot is also repetitive, the bulk of it consisting of Nannerl and her family traveling around Europe. While this is probably realistic to the historical truth, it made for a dull narrative at some points. I think fans of Holly Black or even fairytale retellings will really love this book! But if you’re looking for a heart-pounding page-turner, this may not be the best fit.

Q: What's your favorite era of historical fiction?. 💎 Happy Book Birthday to Revelle by @lsmittywrites!. Charmant is only a ferry ride away. Give a Revelle a jewel for a chance to feel ecstasy. Revelle had me at "Moulin Rouge inspired" - say less! So of course I had to bring this book with me the last time I visited the Moulin Rouge on Broadway - and of course dress the part! I absolutely love historical fiction, especially set in the 1920s Prohibition era, throw in some magic and mystery and fantasy and I'm SOLD. If you're a fan of historical fiction, dual POV, YA fantasy, forbidden love, family bonds and of course - Moulin Rouge - this is the story for you! So happy Revelle is out in the world today in all formats including my favorite, audiobook~. Fun fact, I've seen Moulin Rouge on stage 15 times since October 2019, including New York, London, and Chicago on the tour - but I just watched the movie for the first time this past December!. Another fun fact, I first met Lyssa in an elevator at YallFest in 2021 before her book officially had a title and kept running into her during Yallfest!. P.S. Hello. I absolutely adored Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken when it first came out. When people started reading Nothing But Sky, I heard a lot of comparisons to this beloved movie and it made me smile. The movie definitely does have the same elements as NBS. A determined girl chasing her dreams. A found family who supports her. And a swoony love interest who is willing to do anything to protect her and keep her safe, all while not standing in the way of her goals. Have you watched this movie?
