Yang Sejong Interview for News1 2017 English Translation Part 1
Yang Sejong, “Let’s date in the first encounter? It’s not my way of dating.”
Tumblr media
‘The proper line’ found by Yang Sejong was outstanding. SBS ‘Temperature of Love’ male lead, On Jungsun was different from any other man we have seen in dramas. He was affectionate, sensitive, and delicate. A unique character among many young men who have made ‘straight-forward’ attractive. Yang Sejong joined the ranks of the next generation of male actors by completing a rare love line with Seo Hyunjin.
This year is the result of constant running. After making his face known through SBS's ‘Saimdang, Lights of Diary’ and ‘Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu’, OCN's ‘Dual’ showed his potential by playing three roles as human clone. He immediately became the main character of the TV station and proved his worth amid expectations and concerns.
He was much more relaxed and confident than when he was in the interview for Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu. And at the same time, I felt something absolutely certain that I wanted to keep my balance. Yang Sejong, who felt the ‘temperature’ of popularity this year, was the most important thing now. There were several times when he gave the same answer to different questions.
All the questions about ancillary things, such as popularity and characters, came back to the answer "I focused only on the essence of acting."   It is in the same vein that when you enter a work, you disconnect from the outside world and enter your own space. Unlike the noisy surroundings, it calms down one's mind. It was also the most important thing for him, who rose to stardom faster than anyone else.
Q. You have become a very ‘hot’ actor because of Temperature of Love. How’s popularity you’ve tasted this time?
Oh, It’s not. When I’m doing my work, I’m blocking myself from the outside. I couldn't meet anyone outside because I only had time at dawn.  So I didn't know how popular it was. There was a break for about 4 days after the temperature of love was over, some people recognized me and asked me to take pictures. I was grateful.
Q. I happened to meet you on the street at the beginning of Temperature of Love. With t-shirt, jeans, and no shaving.
That's right. (laughs) That's what I usually do. I wear training clothes or jeans and go around comfortably. Few people recognize me if I don't blow dry my hair. (laughs).
Tumblr media
Q. Many people knows Yang Sejong after he starred as a lead role in the drama, aren’t your parents the most pleased?
My parents are also calm. They don’t watch TV often. Haha.
Q. The male character like On Jungsun is very fresh. He isn’t just a man with ‘force-power’ or ‘straight forward’ and tsundere character. He is a kind but delicate man, it must be a difficult character.
Everything was the power of the script. It was not because what I did, it was all in the script. The more I couldn’t grasp, the more I held into the script. It was the same when I was acting before, but this time I was really live with the script.  I was listening to music, and I read the script.
Q. What did you pay attention more to express the character of On Jungsun?
I didn’t try to ‘pretend to look cool’. That was all in the script. Originally, I liked to find ‘the nature’ of the character. So, I tried not to ‘pretend’ anymore. I was trying to get to the point. Only in the  circumstances of Jungsun’s life, I focused on Jungsun’s relationship. I was trying to express it as it is without overdoing it.
Tumblr media
Q. Was On Jungsun a difficult character for Yang Sejong?
I tried not to think that it’s difficult even though it’s hard. I was talking about the script with the director (Nam Geon) and suddenly the idea just popped up. The director said, "What about Jungsun having a blue heart?". It came to me as a keyword. This words are hard to explain, if I have to explain, he’s a person who wants to have a blue heart. You could say that it’s confidence and ease. I want On Jungsun to be that kind of person.
Q. In a previous interview, you said that you used a perfume that suits each characters. What kind of perfume does On Jungsun use?
I have a perfume that I chose because I like the ‘base note’. The lingering scent is just like Jungsun. I ordered three perfumes called Narciso Rodriguez Bleu Noir For Him. I used that perfume (laugh).
Q. What is your favorite line of On Jungsun?
I think that it’s the words that Yang Sejong needed the most, so it becomes my memorable line. ‘There is a priority in life’, I love that words. I think that Yang Sejong is a real unstable person. People around me say I am impulsive. Everytime I do that, I’ll think about that words, and everything will be fine (laugh). Stay calm and calm.
Tumblr media
Q. So what is Yang Sejong's priority?
The first is family, the second is acting, and the third is walking alone at dawn? (laughs)
Q. What are the differences and the similarities between Yang Sejong and On Jungsun?
In the beginning, Jungsun doesn't want to talk about his family history or anything. But, Sejong does. If I love someone, I can tell what’s inside me.  That's the obvious difference.
Q. How about Jungsun’s way of ‘Let’s date’ in the first meet?
That's really different from me. When I have someone I like, I observe for a long time, talk to her a lot, and when I'm sure, I’ll approach her. I mostly doubt the feeling at first. 'This is just a moment’s emotion. No, let’s think about it carefully’ like this. (laugh) If you get to know and get along well with that person, it leads to the feeling that you want to be in a relationship, otherwise I can’t.
Tumblr media
Q. What about Yang Sejong’s dating style?
I always lose when I’m in a relationship. Looking back, I always did. Even if the other person does something wrong, if they're in love, they don't argue or complain. ‘Don’t you think that person is so pretty?’ it released right a way. ‘Next time, don’t do that’ I think it goes like that.
Q. Isn’t it your first love scene in melodrama? I think there must have a lot of NGs.
There was a kissing scene too in Saimdang. I didn’t have much NGs. (Does that mean you’re skilled?) Haha. That’s not what I meant. We've had a lot of rehearsals for our movements. We've had enough practice, so we've got less NGs.
Q. You said ‘beautiful person’ to your costar Seo Hyunjin. I don’t think you said that just because the appearance.
Yes.  It's an all-in-one expression. She is indeed beautiful but the personality and inner self are beautiful too. Beautiful in itself? (laugh) She’s the moodmaker. She’s everyone’s favorite.

[170718] Yang Se Jong commits to immersing himself into three characters in ‘Duel’.
** KOREAN-VIETNAMESE: YANG SEJONG 양세종 VNFP**
**VIETNAMESE-ENGLISH: YANGSEJONGTRANS**
**DO NOT TAKE OUT WITHOUT PERMISSION**
Recently, Yang Se Jong has expressed his thoughts on the 3 characters that he plays in ‘Duel’. When talking about the difficulty of expressing the different characters, Yang Se Jong shared:
“Rather than acting and showing three people who are the same but so different from each other, I focused on naturally immersing myself in each character.”
Below is Yang Se Jong’s thoughts on each character that he portrayed.
Q: When you transformed into Lee Sung Joon, which aspect did you think was the most important?
Yang Sejong: From the beginning, Lee Sung Joon’s character had no idea about anything. He was a stuffy and chaotic character, because he had forgotten all memories of the human experiments and anything related to the abduction. The following episodes, thanks to the help of Ryu Mi Rae and Jang Deuk Cheon, his heart became more at ease and regained the memories of Dr. Lee Yong Sub.
Q: Lee Sung Hoon’s emotions are quite different to normal people. So how did you play this role?
Yang Sejong: The outside feelings that Lee Sung hoon has shown was something I created through the hardships that I experienced. Lee Sung Hoon is a character, who, through the horrible pains that he has experienced, has always thought of revenge as well his survival without believing in anyone due to his shameful experience. Unlike Sung Joon, Sung Hoon is separated from people. Sung Hoon, who had not been shaken while committing evil acts, was in a state of tremendous shaking due to Jang Deuk Cheon’s daughter. I was worried about how to express these feelings well.
Q: Then what are your thoughts and feelings on Dr. Lee Yong Sub in the second half of the drama?
Yang Sejong: Lee Yong Sub, who was responsible for the birth of Lee Sung Hoon and Lee Sung Joon, is a character that has created extreme sides of both Sung Hoon and Sung Joon. I had to try and find a middle ground between them. He decided to leave Sung Joon and Sung hoon. Although I don’t know how it will end, I will do my best until the end despite whatever happens. I am deeply thankful to the viewers who are supporting the drama ‘Duel’.
On the other hand, the producer of Duel also expressed his thoughts on actor Yang Se Jong. Lee Seung Hoon PD said:
"Throughout the filming days for Duel, the acting that Yang Se Jong showed was so multi-dimensional that I couldn't believe that he did it all alone. It's not an easy task at all to switch between two completely different characters. I want to thank Yang Se Jong for showing such a neat performance like that. I'm also looking forward to the scene stealer in the last two Duel episodes."

I really like yang sejong....... as a person. I have yet to watch him in anything but in literally the couple episodes of coffee friends and this one single gif set I’ve seen of him, I already know I like him. he just seems great, his whole aura is very puppy like. someone that says “I love you” very frequently to his friends and family. his whole personality on coffee friends is something I truly believe to be an accurate and real representation of who he is in real life. always taking care of the people around him and working his hardest for anything and everything. even in that interview where p.o from block b says that sejong once gave him caramel candies, told him he made them for him, smiled and walked away... In my heart that’s literally what I imagine him doing.

Yang Sejong’s Interview for Allets Star
[Yoon Gayi, reporter] The youngest son who grew up in a rich family. A warm and delicate church brother. If he smile with pure face, you want to meet this guy even once. This is the best discovery of 2017, Super Rookie Yang Sejong.
In his second year since his debut, he first appeared like a comet on the small screen in late 2016 with drama Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu. He has appeared in three dramas this year alone, including "Saimdang, Lights Diary" and "Duel," and "Temperature of Love," which end just recently. He has already become the main character in the fourth work since his debut. He also shared the outstanding level with seniors like Seo Hyunjin (Temperature of Love), Jeong Jaeyoung and Kim Jongeun (Duel). Is it luck or back to back? Nope!
It’s skill. He proved that his acting doesn’t like a rookie. Although He was enrolled in the acting department of the theater academy of the Korea National University of Arts, which is considered the cradle of the acting, not everyone who goes there will be recognized for their acting skills in such short period of time and becomes the star who steals women’s heart. Beside the acting skills learned from books and theories, Yang Sejong that I met in person has something special. I could feel the energy. If someone asks ‘Do you think he’ll become a great actor?’, I feel like I’ll naturally nod.
Tumblr media
“I work on my own room in every projects. I try to create my own space to suit the situation in the play, and I try to keep the character's atmosphere as much as possible.”
Yang Sejong who finished the SBS Monday-Tuesday drama "Temperature of Love" well start the interview. Although the drama ended with a disappointing ratings compared to its popularity in the beginning, it received a lot of positive reviews for Yang Sejong's passionate portrayal of the male lead, On Jeongseon. In Korean dramas, the younger male code is a bit boring now.  Nevertheless, Yang Sejong’s On Jeongseon was enough to listen to the hearts of many women. His delicate acting and perfect character analysis were the result of his brilliant performance.
It’s busy and busy. Yang Sejong who has been running like everyday for this past year said that after an ‘Okay’ in the last filming of ‘Temperature of Love’, the first thing that came to his mind was ‘I want to get rid of all now’. He spent almost all of 2017 in a  '골방’ (a small room at the back of large room). In fact, there is a gap, one or two months, after the end of the work, but Temperature of Love started filming right after Duel was finished (so it was hard).
Tumblr media
Yang Sejong used to create his own space for immersion (He called it  골방) whenever he played a character of the piece. No outsiders allowed. In the middle of ‘Duel’, similar to the atmosphere in the drama, he made the room messy like a garbage dump, kept the lights to the minimum while memorized the script and prepared the acting. As the ‘Temperature of Love’ began, another new ‘small room’ created.  The ambience was neat and comfortable, the lights were all lit, one TV and one bed and four scented candles were displayed.
“I like to work in ‘the small room’. Of course, the character in the work is fictional, but I believe it exists somewhere in the world. In order to get closer to the character quickly, I make ‘the small room’ on purpose and choose the perfume that suits the character. This time as (On) Jeongseon, I’ve been able to open the windows wide to have ‘blue heart’.”
When he started filming, he turned his cellphone into the silent mode,  he said he didn't even receive any calls from his family and acquaintances. Yang Sejong was throwing himself for acting in a way that he lived as a character in his work for the time being. As he lived like that, he is gaining the recognition and popularity. Is Yang Sejong happy now?
Tumblr media
“It may sounds like I’m not grateful for things I have now, but until now I keep wondering if I’m doing well. There were a lot of good people around me... they’re leaving. I don’t think I’m good to my parents either, so I think I’m a bad son.”
Yang Sejong was given four days off after the last shooting of Temperature of Love until the interview began. He said he met a lot of people he couldn’t meet before. He said, "I thought I'd be thinking too much if I was alone, so I met many people and drank wine that I couldn't drink before. On my way home, I bought triangular kimbap and cup noodles at the convenience store and ate them. Well, I’m an eater... I ate all the things that I couldn't eat because of the shoot. I've gained 2 to 3 kilograms in a few days.
Yang Sejong, who has been working continuously for more than a year and has lived as various characters, the tiredness could be felt from his honest and calm words. The empty battery needs to be charged. Yang Sejong was looking forward to the upcoming year-end trip.
“I'll certainly depart at the end of the year. I want to go to Spain or Italy, Hongkong or Japan will be good too. I haven't decided yet whether to leave alone or with two best friends. I just want to buy a one-way ticket. If I go, I won't answer any company calls! hahaha.”
He seemed determined. Rest well and come back again to walk in the ‘good’ path of actor Yang Sejong.
“You asked a lot of questions about the next plan. I'm keeping all the next projects open. I don't usually think, 'I have to do something like this,' or 'I have to do a character like this’. I don't know what kind of character I'm going to return to, but look forward to it!"

[English Translation] Yang Sejong Interview for Asia Globe Daily - Part III
Tumblr media
What was the reason why Yang Sejong started acting?
“When I was a sophomore in high school, I watched a play called Snow Drop with my friends. I was originally cheesy, but that time I was so into the play that I was laughing and crying along. I thought I was the only one, but my friends were all the same. That time I thought that it’s attractive how they move the audience with acting. That’s why I made up my mind that I wanted to do acting too.”
“I went to 한예종 ( 한국예술종합학교 /  Korea National University of Arts) and put down my pride.  It's a place where I have friends who have tremendous passion for acting. The similarity is that everyone is strong-willed. But, they tried to get the piece by proposals not just demanding. Rather than being jealous, I’m the type who applaud someone that’s better than me. I thought I’d have a lot to learn, that’s why I let go my pride and approached them first.”
Tumblr media
Yang Sejong who said “I’ve gained a lot by putting down my pride’ learned to make works together. Because of this, the friendship between senior and junior has become stronger. Yang Sejong recalled,
"I got close to one of my friends, HyunJoong, while fighting. If you practice until dawn every day and share your opinions about the work while you are sensitive and sleepless, your voice will eventually increase. Once, we fought while raising voice for two hours. After fighting so much, I finally got a feeling for it. When I was in school, I had a tent on the rooftop, had drink and talked with my classmates and it was so much fun to make pieces together.”
“I don’t have a big goal. If I have planned script today and I’ll just stick with it. If I take a rest after work, I’ll loaf around. I don't look far at anything, I focus only on what's given.”
When asked wether Yang Sejong has role model. He said,
“I want to be like Bradley Cooper. The actor's eyes are so pretty and nice. His overall vibe is sexy, but he can show unique charm in any characters. I wish I could be that kind of actor.”

[English Translation] Yang Sejong Interview for Asia Globe Daily - Part II
Tumblr media
Yang Sejong has released an episode of ‘Saimdang’. He played a tough, cranky golden spoon Do Inbeom in 'Romantic Doctor’, and the next move after Yang Sejong’s successful debut is SBS new  Wednesday-Thursday drama ‘Saimdang, Lights Diary’  (written by Park Eunryeong, directed by Yoon Sangho).  In fact, Saimdang is a pre-produced work, so it is practically Yang Sejong's debut.
Saimdang is a fusion historical drama about Seo Jiyoon (played by Lee Youngae), who majored in Korean art history, accidentally unravels the secrets of Saimdang Diary in Italy crossing the past and the present time. In the historical part Yang Sejong played as young version of Lee Gyeom (played by Song Seungheon) and in modern part he played as Han Sanghyun the assistant of Lee Youngae (Seo Jiyoon). He acted two characters.
“I had a lot of scenes where I bumped into Senior (Lee Young Ae). I was pratically following her. Senior (LYA) is really calm and the way she talks to me words by words is really kind. When I was filming with her, I couldn’t help but relied a lot on her.” He recalled.
Tumblr media
Yang Sejong had learned how to ride a horse for his appearance in historical drama. For Saimdang, he recalled how he had to do filming with a horse named Apollo. There was also an unforgettable episode with Apollo.
“There was a scene where I had to ride a horse across Ojakgyo (bridge). It was a sad scene where I had confrontation and I desperately asked for favors while confronting the servants. While I was standing still and said the lines, surprisingly Apollo put his head in my arms. I don’t think I can forget Apollo’s eyes that time. At that state, other actors tried to pat the horse but suddenly it was going to bite. Everyone was surprised.”
Acting with animals is never easy. But there was an anecdote where he was thankful towards Apollo. He said,
“There was a scene where I had to run fast when I couldn't ride well. But Apollo didn't run well. The Director (PD) said that if you can't run, the scene will be cut. So I asked, ‘Just once, please run Apollo’, and when the filming start, he was really running.” Expressing his gratitude.
Yang Sejong, who interacted with horse, is actually allergic to fur. He said,
“I like puppies, but I have severe allergy to them. If I have a single piece of fur near my face, I will  have difficulty breathing in half an hour. If I  go to salon to have my make up and they are the pet owner, I will develop the symptoms. So before that, I have to take two pills of medicine at once.”

[English Translation] Yang Sejong Interview for Asia Globe Daily 2017 - Part I
Tumblr media
‘Was Do Inbeom that young?’ The first impression of Yang Sejong while wearing a 'boyfriend look' on his youthful face was just the refreshing appearance of a man on his age.  He played Do Inbeom in his early 30s, but actually he was born in 1992 and is 25 years old this year.
Yang Sejong played the role of Do Inbeom, the son of Do Yoon-an (Choi Jinho), the head of a large hospital, in the popular SBS Monday-Tuesday drama "Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu" (written by Kang Eunkyung, directed by Yoo Insik).
Yang Sejong, who met at Asia Globe headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul on the 19th, said,
"It's still empty. I’m not feeling good because it’s over because I think a lot about the staffs, the directors, and the seniors. The work itself was happiness, I was so happy to be with such great people.”
Tumblr media
"Romantic Doctor" surpassed the 20% mark (provided by Nielsen Korea) nationwide in just eight episodes of the show, while the final episode and extra episodes recorded 27% ratings. In particular, the lines that evoke the actors' good acting were the topic of the town.
Yang Sejong, who has been in the spotlight since his debut film, said,
"I don't feel pressured. I don't think like that from the start. Now, when I thought about what was more important to me, it was that I had to act better. My motto is to do what is given well. So I don't think about other things on the outside. In case I’ll regret it later.”
"Even when doing audition, rather than thinking what I had to do, I just thought to convey it well."
In Romantic Doctor, Yang Sejong worked with the great senior Han Sukkyu. He said,
“I was always looking forward to do filming with him every day. Even after filming with him, I kept on thinking about it. We just met only few hours ago, but I just wanted to see him again and wanted to act as soon as possible.
Han Sukkyu’s advice has changed his value.
“He said, ‘Inbeom, I don’t want you to go short, I want you to go far.’ The words hit me so hard.  I've never thought about it before, but I've become more firm.”
“Senior always said a lot of good things even about everyday life. I feel thankful for that moment. I really relied on him a lot. I’m happy that he treated me so well.”
Do Inbeom is a rival to Kang Dongjoo (played by Yoo Yeonseok). In addition, he had bad relationship and had argument with Park Euntak (played by Kim Minjae) and Woo Yeonhwa (played by Seo Eunsoo). How about the actual set?
Yang Sejong smiled and said, “I always say this to Yeon Seok senior. I look at him and say, ‘Senior, I love you again today’. Every single day. And Senior (YYS) answered it with ‘I love you too’. Towards Minjae too, I would say ‘I love you Minjae’ and he said ‘I love you too’. The filming site of Romantic Doctor is happiness itself.”

[English Translation] Yang Sejong Interview for Issue Daily 2017 - Part 2
Tumblr media
It’s actor Han Sukkyu, the one whom Sejong learned a lot, in Romantic Doctor Kim Sabu. Has been working with the great senior like Han Sukkyu, affected his way of acting.
“My acting values became clearer after meeting senior Han Sukkyu. He said to me, ‘Don’t go too short, be an actor who goes further.’ That really hit my heart. I think I can go a long way if I do well on my own. I don't know how long I can be an actor, but I always try my best at that moment.”
Two years ago, he collaborated with Lee Youngae in Saimdang, Light of Diary. In Saimdang, which will premiere today (26th), Yang Sejong played double roles as a young Yi Gyeom in the Joseon Dynasty and a humanist scholar Han Sanghyun in modern times. Lee Youngae's return to Drama after 13 years since "Dae Jang Geum" has attracted a lot of attention. Yang Sejong also grabbed a rare opportunity to join Lee Youngae, an actor who many actors hope to join.
“I think I know why Senior Lee Youngae is respected. There is that kind of energy. I can’t believe that. ‘All people are the same’, I really used to think that way. Senior Lee Youngae is really calm and benevolent. It really hit me hard when she gave advices because she didn’t talk that much. I had a lot of scenes with her in Saimdang so I had relied on her so much with my whole heart. When I acted, I hid it because I thought it would make me look like a child.” (laugh)
Yang Sejong usually enjoys watching movies on his computer while drinking wine alone. His lifetime movie is ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ that he watchs time to time.
"Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor that year. It was good that the characters of the two actors showed in the movie were described in detail. My favorite actor is Bradley Cooper. Human beings themselves look sexy. There's a natural sexiness that people have. His eyes are so nice. I've seen all their works, and I think they're good at drawing out the charms of their characters."
Do you have any resolution as Actor Yang Sejong in 2017? Upon hearing the answer, ‘Consistently’ is the perfect term to describe this actor.
“Goals, I really don't have any. I'm just an actor who want to go far and last long. I want to do what I'm given. Maybe that's the goal."

Q: I talked to the director and screenwriter before the “Saimdang” press conference. They said they picked you because of your perfect acting style even though you were nervously shaking when the script was handed to you.
Yang Sejong: It was true that I was shaking a lot compared to the Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim audition. This was actually the first audition round. I participated in all four audition rounds, I trembled the most when acting in front of the scriptwriters. The atmosphere was very…
Q: I know you only participated in acting as young Lee Gyeom in the past of Saimdang. But in the present, there is no adult Song Seunghun. You must have been surprised at the longer screen time than expected.
Yang Sejong: To be honest, from the beginning there was never any talk about acting as two roles. Senior Song Seunghun also watched the audition round for the young Lee Gyeom role. The director said “you’re young Lee Gyeom. Just act!”. That day, the director also said “the character in the present is Han Sang Hyeon, you can analyse it and try again”. Because of that, I tried to audition in the short state of mind with young Lee Gyeom and my acting wasn’t good enough. The director said, “show a bit more of this, try again” and gave me more chances. I slept for about one hour during the two days of the audition. It didn’t matter if I was living or dead, I had to prepare well first. I auditioned twice after that and was offered the role.
Q: Seems like the director gave you, a rookie, quite a few chances. What did he see in you?
Yang Sejong: I’m not really sure. Truthfully, the director did not praise me or anything. Haha. I only got to hear what he thought of me through the press after Romantic Doctor finished airing. He said Sejong acted very well from the beginning. I’m very happy because of that.
Q: Han Suk Kyu and Lee Young Ae are seriously both amazing actors. Both are seniors and actors who have been acting for a while find it hard to meet them even once. But right from your debut, you have been acting with them in a very accidental way. Since you have met them, what do you think of them as seniors?
Yang Sejong: “In Bum, I hope you will become an actor who not only go a short distance but further than that. You seem to be able to express twice, or even three times of what you think you’re capable of” That was Senior Han Suk Kyu’s advice for me. He also seriously bought so many meals for me. Even though we have been keeping in contact for a while, I still always say “Senior, I love you”. Every time I say that, he patted my head and laughed hahaha. I’m very happy. Since Senior Lee Young Ae is a female, I couldn’t act the same way. In addition, that was my first project so the pressure was huge and I didn’t want to disturb her. I also didn’t have time to relax here and there. But suddenly Senior Lee Young Ae approached me and that made me so surprised. I’m very proud to be able to work together with her… I depended on her a lot.
Part 2: A Taekwondo player whose dream is to become an actor
Q: How did you begin acting?
Yang Sejong: Basically from the beginning I had no thoughts about acting at all. When I was in junior high school, I went to watch a school play called “Snow Drops”. That was also the first play I’ve ever watched in my entire life. I felt very eager, I kept laughing then crying by myself. My personality is quite strange and embarrassing like that. Then I looked around me, even my friends felt like that. Haha. At that time, I felt that “I also want to become a person standing on stage just like these actors”. Then when senior year came, I decided that this is my future path.
Q: Your parents didn’t oppose? That was the time of the entrance exam and suddenly you left everything to act. If that was me, I would’ve strongly oppose it.
Yang Sejong: From the moment I started acting at the age of 19 until now, there was only one time (that they opposed) and they said: “If you have decided to act then just be determined to act”. Of course, all of my other relatives tried to stop me. They told me to do anything, even sports, but acting.
Q: Oh, I didn’t know you played sports.
Yang Sejong: Ah, seems like this is the first time I’ve talked about this! When I was in junior high school, I participated in Taekwondo competitions and received a scholarship from the Samsung Foundation. A student who will attend a sports university but suddenly left everything for acting. My uncles, aunties and grandparents were all upset. Why suddenly acting and not a sportsperson? Or even an apprentice at my uncle’s factory… But the impact of that play on me was too great, there was nothing else. Haha.
Q: Then you prepared to act quite late, but you ended up getting into K-Arts. You do have quite a talent.
Yang Sejong: Personally, I was so lucky to receive help from many people. In my first ever acting class, there was a friend who was amazing at acting. That day was the first day we met. Right after we finished our class, I immediately asked that friend how to practice acting. That friend told me to just stand in a room by yourself and express your emotions. After I finished that class, I reached home and it was already 11pm, there was no way I could yell out my emotions loudly. But I went home and started practicing straight away.
At that time, the house I lived in was an old tile house and there was a hexagon mirror. On the balcony there was a part made out of glass. I found a spot to stand and lit a candle inside a bowl. The sparkling candle reflected the hexagonal mirror. The atmosphere was really great.
There was a teacher who I respected that once said, if you want to excel in any field, you need to be in an environment where you can practice with a good teacher. You’ll be able to do anything with enthusiasm. Thanks to the candle and mirror, I found a good environment. And the good teacher was that friend I met in my acting class. Then I just need myself to do well. From that moment on, I practiced acting without fail every day from 5 to 6am. Finally, I was able to study and get accepted into K-Arts. That friend was already accepted into K-Arts from senior high school and now came my senior. Haha.
Part 3: Yang Sejong’s “Teacher Kim”
Q: Perhaps we can call that person Yang Sejong’s “Teacher Kim” of life. In Romantic Doctors, every time there was any arguments between the students, Teacher Kim always listened and revived their spirits. You seem to have a mentor like that.
Yang Sejong: I actually have two mentors. When I was in high school, it was the Student Coordinator Ahn Joo Hyuk. He believed in me a lot, and also helped me in order for me to walk on the right path. I still remember whenever I had trouble, he told me “let’s go to the mountains!” and we both went to the mountains. We just went like that and sang along to songs together, talking about this and that and that made my mind a lot lighter.
(Interviewer’s comment: It wasn’t easy to get close to a teacher like that. When he was asked if he was a student who caused a lot of trouble and got punished, he raised and shook his hand and said “It’s not like that!” then laughed haha)
The second person was the acting director of the acting academy that I attended, teacher Oh Seung Woo. I had to work part time in order to pay for my school fees, my life was quite difficult because it was too expensive. It was overdue for 6 months already. That day, it was raining heavily, I saw the teacher standing outside to get some air. I shyly came up to him to talk about the school fees. I just said “teacher…”, but he patted my shoulder and said “Sejongah, don’t worry about anything other than acting. You just need to pass the entrance exam. Just be comfortable and don’t worry about the school fees.” At that time, I was seriously…
(interviewer’s comment: Up until this part, Yang Se Jong hesitated for a while, his eyes were also teary. His voice was shaking and he said: “thanks to those two people, I didn’t feel tired during the most chaotic and difficult time in my life.”)
Part 4: acting techniques and learning about Analects for Saimdang.
Q: When you’re doing something, it seems like your style is to be totally absorbed into it. Saimdang was your first project so you were absorbed into it more than usual.
Yang Sejong: Because I’m not a person with good imaginations, it’s better for me to have real experiences when approaching characters. I prepared for the drama Saimdang and practically lived in the museum. Han Sang Hyeon is a character who understands very clearly about Oriental art and the Analects so if I don’t feel and observe it directly, then my acting might not be as good as expected. Because of that, I continued to study about the Analects and went to the museums to see art. If I didn’t know Kanji, then the lines from the script wouldn’t flow naturally. So I found each Kanji word from a practice script to read it more accurately. To the place where Han Sang Hyeon came, and any of his actions, I believed I could become him unconsciously.
Q: Later on, what kind of character would Yang Se Jong want to become? I’m quite curious as to what you have prepared so far. If you became a lawyer character, then the viewers would definitely become crossed eyed. Haha.
Yang Sejong: Haha, not to that extent but I just want to do it to the best of my ability.
Q: Is there a reason for you to be that hard to yourself? Because it was your first project, if you chose method acting, then gather the know-hows and experience, wouldn’t it be easier little by little?
Yang Sejong: It has to be like that for me to be proud and confident in myself. At some time in the future, if I have any know-hows, I will be able to act in an easier way, but it’s not like that right now. Honestly, I don’t want to change that fact (of getting into a character). If I work to the best of my ability today, then I won’t have any regrets tomorrow. But my company told me to stop giving other people such a hard time… haha.
Q: Even though Saimdang was the first project you filmed, it was pre-produced but the broadcasting time got delayed so you ended up debuting with Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim. In addition, right after Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim finished airing, Saimdang got broadcasted. Now, how do you think your acting was in the first project that you filmed? You don’t have any regrets like “if only I did this better”?
Yang Sejong: I think I can keep holding onto my beliefs and values. No one could see how the future would turn out. If I was acting as young Lee Gyeom and Han Sang Hyeon right now, I wouldn’t still be clear that I could show the audience a better acting side or not. Even if there were scenes that I felt regret towards, the me at that time believed that I have really done the best to my ability, because I tried that hard. I want to do my best so that at some point, I wouldn’t have any regrets like “I should’ve put more effort in”, I will believe in myself more. Because of that, I don’t really think about the past, nor dream of a distant future.

(similar questions with previous interviews have been omitted)
Q: It’s been a while since ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’ ended. How are you feeling?
Yang Sejong: More than feeling regrets, I feel so empty. It’s like everything has gone past so quickly, and I’m really missing the director, seniors and the staff who filmed together. Because we filmed in such a great and harmonious environment, I’m feeling very empty right now.
Q: ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’ just finished and now you’re back with ‘Saimdang: Light’s Diary’. What’s the difference between those two directors?
Yang Sejong: ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’’s director Yoon In Sik is someone who is concise and calm. He’s one of those people who are quite hard on the outside but soft in the inside. Honestly, he’s really a person who’s comfortable with everyone. He’s perfect and a really great person. Director Yoon Sang Ho who was responsible for ‘Saimdang: Light’s Diary’ is also a comfortable and exciting person. From the outside, he resembles a tiger but in reality, he’s a really warm person. As time passed, I felt that the director really cared for the actors. Because of that, I felt like I was working in a great environment. It’s like I was blessed.
Q: Historical and medical, these two genres are not easy at all. I think you had lots of difficulties, right?
Yang Sejong: Correct. ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’ was especially difficult as it was my first time filming surgical scenes. Honestly, I had a little bit of regret to perform better but I had already prepared everything to the best of my ability. I even visited a hospital to directly observe and learnt 1 to 10 things that the doctor consulted me. I also watched laparoscopic surgery video clips and came to the hospital to practice. I had to approach things that were unimaginable to me. However, from the moment I finished filming the first surgical scene, my hands got better.
Q: Then what about historical dramas? Usually, there is a difference in tonality and speech delivery. This becomes a difficulty.
Yang Sejong: That part isn’t hard. I think finding a character’s essential points is harder than that. Once you’ve fully grasp the character’s image really well, everything else will be resolved. Finding a character’s essential points is the most time consuming.
Q: Then your method of finding a character’s spirit is…
Yang Sejong: Firstly, I have to think and imagine a lot. This is also the reason why I enjoy strolling alone at dawn. That’s when there’s no one on the streets and the atmosphere is great. The sky would be dark and I would find songs that fit in with the things I’m thinking about. What kind of person is this character, what would he be doing alone, what would his house look like, how would he decorate his house? I just walk and imagine these basics. That’s my way of creating a character in my mind.
Q: During the ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’ press conference, you were serious shaking so much. I think how will you do if you stand alone in the middle of camera flashes? Even when the drama finished, and now that we’re chatting, you still seem very worried (laughs).
Yang Sejong: It’s true that I’m a bit afraid of camera flash. I don’t really know where to look. Because I don’t often get all the lights turned to my face, I don’t really like it. I don’t really like crowdy and loud places. I spend more time working alone.
Q: You seem to like loneliness?
Yang Sejong: Yeah, that’s what I like. When I’m alone, I drink lots of wine. Other than that, I wander around at dawn while listening to music like what I said before. I really like doing those things.
Q: It seems like strolling alone at night helps you think about acting more deeply. When filming ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’, did Han Suk Kyu give any acting advice to you?
Yang Sejong: Yeah he did. That advice has changed my thinking as well as my acting style a lot. Even my values have changed a lot. Q: What was that advice about? Yang Sejong: Senior Han Suk Kyu told me, “In Bum, I hope you’ll become an actor who goes a long distance rather than a short one”. Because of that, I have to do well on everything that’s been given to me and honestly, I’ve thought a lot about the fact that I have to think more thoroughly, deeply and broader. I have told myself to have deeper thoughts, on top of the things that are unimaginable. Looking back, the ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’ set was a place that has taught me a lot of things.
Q: Then what does ‘Romantic Doctor: Teacher Kim’ mean to you?
Yang Sejong: It’s a drama that tells many things, every conversation was an extremely precious lesson. It’s probably the set that I will remember until the day I die. I think everyone on set would think the same.
Q: Even though you’re a rookie, you’ve had many different acting experiences. Do you have any thoughts about what character you would do next?
Yang Sejong: First off, I do have thoughts about being able to do anything given to me. If I could choose a character to do, I would want to act in a role surrounding platonic love with a much older actress. A relationship like that will always bring about obstacles and difficulties that you can’t easily overcome. I hope to become a complex character like that.
Q: In films with characters like that, is there any character that has impressed you?
Yang Sejong: There’s so many. Jenifer Lawrence’s role in ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ is also a complex character. Bradley Cooper in ‘American Sniper’ also showed very good emotions. Even if there are some parts that the actors themselves made up, I was still very attracted to them.
Q: Is there any connection between your acting goal and the characters you’re attracted to?
Yang Sejong: Ah, I don’t think it’s quite like that. I don’t think there is a clear goal when I’m acting. Even the normal Yang Sejong also doesn’t have any goals. If I had to really pick a goal, it would be to do well on the things that are given to me. Just like right now, my goal is to complete this interview in an enjoyable way. Haha. When filming, because I totally get absorbed into my character, my goal during those times is to convey a good character. I only set goals in the present and don’t really plan anything for the future. That’s my way of living. Not having any particular goal but just focusing wholeheartedly for myself at the present time.

[170203 XPORTS NEWS INTERVIEW] The reason to wait for a new Yang Se Jong.
** KOREAN-VIETNAMESE TRANSLATIONS BY YANG SEJONG 양세종 VNFP**
**VIETNAMESE-ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY YANGSEJONGTRANS**
**DO NOT TAKE OUT WITHOUT PERMISSION**
Q: ‘Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim’ just finished airing, the currently airing drama ‘Saimdang: Light’s Diary’ has already finished filming. You’re resting for quite a long time at the moment, right?
Yang Sejong: Besides acting, I especially like wine and perfume. Recently, I’ve tried many different types of wine. I’m currently trying to find what types of wine are available. The reason why I’m attracted to it is because once you know how to choose, you will be able to discover the different values in expensive as well as cheap wines: You will never have to drink wines with fixed prices and can choose better tasting ones.
Q: Besides drinking wine, do you have any other hobbies?
Yang Sejong: I like reading comic books and watching movies. When I was younger, I would always visit the bookshop after school. There were comics, novels and even DVDs available. Every day I would talk with the bookshop owner, and afterwards, I also worked part time there. During the time I worked there, I was able to read many books.
Q: Among the comic books and films that you have seen and read, is there a particular work that you viewed as a life lesson?
Yang Sejong: Because there are too many, it’s hard to choose just one. Firstly, if we’re talking about comics that I like to read, it’s “The Ruler of the Land”, “Slam Dunk”, “Samurai Deeper Kyo”, “Burnign Edge”, “Kisengsoo”, “The Prince of Tennis”. I’m thinking of too many right now. Now, the film that I like is “Dallas Buyers Club”. I would always turn it on whenever I drink wine. In that film, the actor’s acting is pretty crazy, that’s why I chose it.
Q: In the future, how would you want the audience to see you as an actor?
Yang Sejong: I want to keep acting but I’m not sure until when. Because of that, I want to do my best in every role. I can’t reveal any plans because I just want to live sincerely in this moment.
Q: “Be sincere with anything you’re given to do”, it seems like this is your life motto.
Yang Sejong: I’m a person with the thought of not knowing when I’m going to die. Since I don’t know when that is and what will happen, I will always want to complete things to the best of my ability. The value of my happiness may be different, I personally think, doing my best is happiness.
Q: Since you don’t have any specific goal, do you have anyone who’s your “role model”?
Yang Sejong: Of course, it’s Bradley Cooper. “Hangover”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, “American Sniper”, “Burnt” etc, I’ve watched all of those films. He is very sexy. Every single role that he has played are all attractive. My dream is to take a photo with Bradley Cooper. However, I actually do have a life goal. That is to meet Bradley Cooper. Haha.
Q: Hopefully you’ll be able to fulfil your goal. Just like your dream of meeting Bradley Cooper, meeting Yang Sejong is probably your fans’ dream. To finish off this interview, please send a message to them.
Yang Sejong: Thank you very much for caring and loving actor Yang Sejong. I will try to become a person who’s always trying hard with everything given to me. From now on, please watch over me.
