M3GAN I not only regained my freedom but also turned 1 year closer to congenital heart failure so fuck it, called outta work, got drunk, and went to go see M3GAN where I happened to be the ONLY person in the theater so when something insane happened I could run up and down the aisles and jump on the chairs. Now here's the part where I remind you that I am not a professional, I don't get paid for this and never will so I am immune from your accusations of unprofessionalism. So what if I like to occasionally have a beer and maybe some parts of the film remain hazy in my memory and I had to leave to pee at least 4 times (Hey, once you break the seal..) but does that really matter since M3GAN is more of a vibe you catch? We've memed this film into a success. Anything outside of tik tok dances is superfluous, we're "yassifying" our horror icons now. But like is this actually enjoyable beyond the intangible algorithms that are social media engagement? Well, when that "vibe" is "willing to make a murderous robot so you don't have to parent your children" then I'm in. Fuck them kids, especially ones that are dealing with trauma, yuck, get that shit away from me. As a former day camp counselor for 2 years, kids are weird and gross and I get it, they're the future or whatever Whitney said but they're little flesh bags of responsibility and I don't want no part of it. I'm fully enjoying this trend of killer doll movies playing with the the idea of AI run amok, I know it's sacrilege but I enjoyed the Child's Play remake (I'm capable of liking 2 things). And luckily for us M3GAN (never not writing it like that) knows exactly the kind of movie it is and leans into some of the more ridiculous aspects without ever disassociating through obnoxious meta humor. It's sincere in its unabashed bonkersness anchored by a satirical skewering of those that mask bad parenting behind technology which is all thanks to writer Akela Cooper who is quickly emerging as a torch bearer of bat-shit mainstream cinema surrounded by the darkness that is monotonous superheroes and sequels.
