the school library is your best friend!! find a nice corner at lunch and get a little bit of extra work done, it all adds up. super helpful if, like me, your schedule is full with sports or extracurriculars (netball for me, avg. twenty hours a week in-season). heckers, even if you just value your home time.
the. books. in. the. library. aren’t. borrowed. enough. especially if you’re doing a humanities subject, grab a book on your current topic and extend your depth of understanding. read even just two pages on the train or five minutes before bed, whatever you can squeeze in. try to read from a variety of perspectives, for me it’s super helpful when it comes time for evaluative analysis of sources in modern history. some books come with different interpretations of different topics already inside.
get yourself that extra edge. the library is there, and it’s free (lovely for a broke gal like myself).
cliché of the day: a little goes a long way, my friends.

Image: Signing autographs on the last day of Year .
When I think back on my time at school I consider myself to have been incredibly lucky. I was lucky in that I knew that I wanted to grow up and become a journalist from the age of eight or nine, which meant that those stressful subject selections, exam results, university applications and answers to the dreaded “what’s on the cards for after school?” were all a somewhat easy venture. I was lucky that I had a drive to plant my feet into a career that I dreamed about, and lucky that the score that I needed to obtain for a position in media studies was going to be achievable. I also knew that I wanted to make my final year of school a memorable one, which saw me thrilled to be selected as the school’s Head Boy. As well as that, I wanted to focus on the broader aspects of education and continued to involve myself in a number of music ensembles, debating workshops and a position in the journalism club - all elements that allowed me to tap into a creative side, boosting my confidence and keeping my mind blissfully busy.
When I was nearing the end of Year Twelve, my plans changed unexpectedly. The script I had so eloquently planned out in my head was flipped upside down and I was faced with an entirely different perspective. I took classroom music right through school, and all of my Year 12 music classmates were auditioning for a degree at the Academy of Performing Arts. Having such a fervent drive for the journalism industry, a career in music had never even entered my mind, and I only pursued classroom music as a hobby - a way to help me nurture my creative outlet and balance my subject load. I was encouraged to head along to the music auditions at the academy as practice for the end of year practical music exam I was set to face a little later down the track. Mindlessly, I went along to the audition and gave it a crack without expecting to hear anything, but to my complete and utter surprise I was offered a position in their Bachelor of Performance degree straight off the bat. Thinking back now, I can remember that at that vulnerable stage of sixteen or seventeen, it’s so easy to get caught up in the spectacle of receiving offers, scoring good results and obtaining placements, as well the incessant pressure of having a firm life-plan mapped out well in advance. I allowed the pressure to shape my decision and foolishly, I accepted the offer and made the announcement that I’d decided to join the academy, despite knowing that it was not what I wanted to do. The following few months saw me sheepishly skirt around the fact that my ambitions had changed, and I pretended to be enthused about being offered a position at such a prestigious music academy. Thinking back now, I should have spoken up sooner and saved myself a lot of stress - I knew that a career in music was a step in the wrong direction for what I desperately wanted, and I knew right from the start that my heart just wasn’t in it. It wasn’t journalism, and it wasn’t what I had scripted for myself. The day before enrolments had to be finalised at WAAPA, I decided against it. Something made me pick up the phone and backtrack on the offer - and it was the best phone call I think I’ve ever made. The weight of the world bounced off my shoulders and I felt such relief that I’d opened the door for another musician who wanted a career in music as much as I’d wanted to land myself a place in media studies. I had missed the boat for a position in journalism for that year, so I had the opportunity to head out to work full-time. I gave myself a well deserved rest from study and exposed myself to the workplace where I worked three different jobs and learnt about developing a strong ethic. I met some wonderful new friends of all ages and travelled, enjoying a new sense of freedom. The following year I secured a position in media studies, and loved it. The passion was immediately reignited inside me and I felt incredibly at ease with the decisions I had made. Through pursuing a field of study that I had such a strong passion for, I have been lucky enough to have flown right across the country, I’ve worked with some incredibly inspiring people, as well as having the opportunity be a breakfast newsreader at RTRfm here in Perth. The route to get here wasn’t the one I’d originally anticipated, but it taught me a lot in the process - and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
My advice to Year 12s would be to have a plan, but to expect it to change… That’s what life is all about! It’s how you deal with the change that really counts - and you need to be prepared for everything. When you head into those exam rooms, try your best - but don’t stress. Regardless of your results, believe me, the sun will come up the next morning and life will continue to go on. Remember to enjoy the closing chapter of your life and look forward to starting a new one. Equip yourself with the ability to be resilient and always take the fork in the road. Appreciate your friends and teachers and remember that life can continue anyway that you want after Year 12. The best of luck - give yourself a pat on the back, because you’ve almost made it!

cheeky tip 03
always have the task sheet/criteria sheet next to you when you’re doing an assignment.
actually, rewrite the task sheet and the rubric for your assessment in words you can actually understand as soon as you get the task. seek teacher or peer help if needed. break down exactly what each criteria requires for you to achieve top marks and keep this somewhere visible and keep referring back to it as you do your task. lessgo.
for example: “discerning language choices for particular purposes” = “A1 vocab”
