So Monday night we watched Pacific Rim.
Then, yesterday we met up with a friend, who mentioned to mr Pancake that Uprising exists. He got curious, so we watched it.
There is so much wrong with that movie.
I'll put a cut here because a) it's Spoilers if you haven't seen either movie, and b) it's a long, long rant.
I would die happily without remembering that movie even existed. So, thank you, friend, for reminding me of it. 😒
First things first, they're ignoring the established lore. On the words of Ron Pearlman, Kaiju bone sells for 500 dollars a pound, so why are there still so many carcasses laying about?
Also, the war ended 10 years ago! Why are Jagers still in production? The whole shebang of the first movie was that the program was ending, and they were given a final shot at the Jagers before the walls were done. The governments didn't want to keep the Jagers then, they sure as fuck wouldn't want to keep them after the war!
(Attack on Titan looking kinda weird.)
And why do they have Jagers strolling around casually? Those things are heavy and expensive to maintain. They would stay in docks until they were needed, make quick work of the Kaiju and return to docking. What's fueling the Mark VI Jagers?
Why wasn't Jake ever even mentioned in the first movie? Where did the kid come from? He just popped up and we gotta swallow it now? And this kid wouldn't be poor! His dad was Marshal Stacker Pentecost, ffs! His sister is Mako Mori! His family are all high ranking war heroes!
Then... There's the kids. The biggest human issue we had in the first movie was actual tension between the GROWN UP pilots, who were dealing with the apocalypse incoming their way. Now, we have kids fighting over who's getting the top bunk.
And don't (please do) get me started on the drift. First movie? They were all family. We had two Russian siblings, Chinese triplets, father and son, twins... People you already share memories with, what makes it easier to drift.
The second movie? They tossed a bunch of random kids together and expected them to drift on day fucking one! Not even Mako and Raleigh managed to drift on day one, and he was ready to give her the world the second she showed up. They actually spent time together before attempting to drift. Talked. Got to know eachother for a couple days.
Yes, sure, there was the impending apocalypse knocking at their doors so they had to speed run a drift compatibility. But it made it believable. The cadets on Uprising didn't have to deal with the world ending.
That Chinese lady? Boss, have the whole "I hate repeating myself" thing? Did they want to divert us into thinking she was the BBEG when Newt (Charlie Day, my second favourite character in the first movie) was acting completely out of character and LITERALLY DATING A FUCKING KAIJU BRAIN? LIKE THAT WASN'T INCRIMINATING ENOUGH?
[deep breaths] ok. I'm calm.
And did they want the boss lady to be a strong female character? She was annoying. They already had a strong female character. Yes. Mako Mori.
I'm honestly glad she died when she did, before they had the chance to destroy her character for good.
And why did they present the solution (Jagers still in commission) then the problem (Obsidian Avenger/return of the Kaijus) to justify the solution?
It's been 10 years since the war! The world wouldn't still be in shambles!
I would have liked that movie if:
"look, we built some Jagers again to put as a display/just in case, and transformed the Shatterdome into a wartime museum."
"oh no. The Kaijus are back! Who can help us now?"
Tumblr media
Put together a ragtag band of fighters, trained by Mako and Raleigh (happily married, thank you. Also, please feel free to send some fluff fics of them my way), and they have to help new pilots to find their way into the drift. There would be a lot of awestruck new pilots, being like "omg, we're being trained by them!", while others are like "what do you know? Your war is over." And they have to wrangle the kids to get a fighting force to go and destroy the Kaijus.
That would make it a better movie. Not necessarily a good one, but one where we're willing to suspend our disbelief and fall back into the amazing lore of Pacific Rim.
Yes. I like the lore of Pacific Rim. Sue me.
ETA: it was such a bad movie, I only remember the names of two characters, Mako because Mako, and Jake, because he's supposed to be the main character.

So I watched Pacific Rim for the first time yesterday, in my late 20s (holy shit holy fuck holy shit why did I not see this sooner et cetera).
I've got a copy of the sequel Uprising too but I've heard some less good things about it (that it may contradict stuff in the first one etc) - would you recommend Uprising or is it better to just stick to the classic?
It depends on the movie experience you're looking for/what you're willing to put up with. In order to explain fully, I'll have to drop some mild spoilers, so be warned.
Uprising goes whole hog with a very pro-cop, pro-military attitude. Mako Mori is basically a cop. Jaegers are weaponized against civilians. There's child soldiers. Where the first movie presents the PPDC as a problematic institution that sometimes performs useful services (its bias toward protecting the wealthy is noted), Uprising presents it as unambiguously good and desirable to be a part of. The film seems to be completely unaware that the world it depicts is utterly dystopian. To see a sequel to a Guillermo del Toro film basically go "police states are cool and cool people support them!" is... jarring, let's say.
And then of course there's the whole storyline with Newt and Hermann. Some people enjoy it for the angst/angst fic potential. I personally just hate it because to me it just feels like what fundamentalists think will happen if you crack open a medieval grimoire or use a Ouija board or something. Like, it just feels this close to a corruption story from a Chick tract to me. Also, the movie turns Hermann into this utter doormat around Newt. It's very hard to imagine that this version of Hermann Gottlieb ever actually argued with Newt, and it's very difficult to imagine that the Hermann of the first film would have put up with Newt's behavior in this movie.
And yes, there's some... continuity weirdness. Like Newt's supposedly been drifting with the kaiju brain chunk from the first movie for ten years, even though the chunk being good for only one drift was a major plot point in the first film. Now of course minor continuity errors aren't a big deal, but here it just feels really sloppy; and in light of the way the second film lionizes the PPDC, it feels like another case of just not caring what the original film was doing.
And of course, what ultimately ends up happening with Mako Mori was a severe [everybody disliked that] moment.
The jaeger designs aren't as varied as they are in the first film, and the fight scenes suffer from a lot of visual clutter. The kaiju themselves are fine, but it's kind of hard to appreciate them when all of the clutter just makes it difficult to register what you're seeing.
And speaking of visuals, if you were really into the look of the first film, or into the way del Toro used color symbolism, Uprising is going to be a letdown. Like the first Pacific Rim film uses the color yellow for Raleigh. Uprising basically uses the color yellow because the first movie used the color yellow.
And then on the other hand... there's Jake Pentecost and Liwen Shao.
John Boyega's acting is great. He makes the character incredibly funny and likable. Sure, the whole thing with Jake being Pentecost's son doesn't really make a lot of sense, but when I actually watch him I just can't really care that much. Mainly I just wish he'd been in a much better movie, where maybe he was Pentecost's nephew or something. He and Nate Lambert read as ex-boyfriends, and for me their interactions are fun to watch.
Liwen Shao is so fun to watch as this genuinely kind of terrible person. In my view the character is utterly wasted on a story that doesn't really seem to appreciate why she's terrible. However, she's kinda got that whole evil girlboss vibe. If you like it when women are kinda evil, you might enjoy Liwen Shao.
So yeah, it's really down to what you're interested in and willing to put up with. It's really not a good film, but some parts of it can be enjoyable.

ayo ok fine i recently watched pacific rim because of your newt propaganda for the poll and yes i was very amused by the nerd duo, tho tbh i also learned kaiju movies arent my thing. this in mind- would you recommend watching following pacific rim movies? if not just for the lil nerds? i care about them so much
Would I recommend Uprising? I mean, yeah, but it's not as cool plot wise as it is cool in the robots fighting kaiju way. However you will get more content of the little nerds. There are a few novel companions, and a rather short anime series called Pacific Rim: The Black that I would also highly recommend! But if you want more of the silly nerds then definitely watch Uprising. Maybe you'll be disappointed, maybe you won't.
Honestly Im so impressed that my propaganda for an online poll convinced you to watch Pacrim though. Didn't think it would work that well, I just wanted to hype up Newt

for the characters ask game: each of jedistormpilot? 🥺
You coming in with all three of my babes, bless
Rey:
First impression: I thought she was incredible, relatable, and a complete sweetheart.
Impression now: can you please be a little less relatable hon??? can you bls do that? I love her lots and I love the emphasis she has on found family because that's everything to me
Favorite moment: mhm that's a toughie. She's got a lot of great scenes! But I think it's actually the sequence when they meet Zorii, cos that scene just...showcases all the reasons I love Rey? She hangs back, observant and inquisitive at first (ignoring Zorii and instead asking Poe for more information), then immediately leaping into action once her friends are put into danger, and once the threat is dealt with, offering her hand to Zorii and showing her compassion and gentleness. It's just 😘👌 fantastic
Idea for a story: I'm not sure tbh! I'd really like to see her struggles with connecting to the spiritual side of the Force explored though.
Unpopular opinion: I like her arc in TROS, but I especially love that Leia trained her...I also like her dynamic with Kylo because *munches popcorn* villain/heroes having complex dynamics and having to work together is my bread and butter even if I do spend an inordinate amount of time watching the sequels cheering "WRECK EM BB" when they fight
Favorite relationship: jedistormpilot babey
Favorite headcanon: I like to think that Rey's mom was a pilot in the original Rebellion, who knew Dosmit Raeh - the pilot Rey's helmet once belonged to - and Rey was actually named after her.
Finn:
First impression: I loved Finn so goddamned much you guys. I thought he was incredible and sweet and so fucking funny, he was one of my favorite parts of the Force Awakens.
Impression now: MY BOY. MY GENERAL. I still love him so fucking much??? He's literally the best okay.
Favorite moment: when he fights Phasma, because "rebel scum" has lived rent free in my head since 2017.
Idea for a story: canonically Finn goes undercover aboard the Finalizer (which. Damn. The big dick energy), and I like the idea of him nearly getting caught but a handful of stormtroopers help him and then in return, Finn breaks them out and brings them to the Resistance. Cos you know... rescuing people aboard the Finalizer's kinda his thing.
Unpopular opinion: I have no idea if this is unpopular or not but watching Pacific Rim Uprising last night really made me wish John got to keep his English accent for Finn instead of them going for an American one.
Favorite relationship: again I'm saying jedistormpilot because I literally cannot and will not choose between his dynamics with Poe or Rey because they're both seratonin rushes.
Favorite headcanon: I really really love the thought that Finn might be from Corellia. Don't ask me why, but I just think it'd be so fucking good.
Poe:
First impression: In the theaters it was a very eloquently thought "oh no, he's hot" followed by a "I'm in love" about five minutes later. I really liked that he was sarcastic but wasn't an asshole, because I honestly just....from what we knew about Poe before the film dropped, I was expecting that? So Poe being this very confident, sarcastic, gentle and encouraging man was a big surprise and an even bigger reason I fell as hard as I did.
Impression now: this character...means so damn much to me. The only other character that ever really meant this much to me was the Doctor when I was a kid (I say that like he still doesn't). Poe is a huge, huge comfort character for me and I just. Love him a lot. In ways my neurodivergent ass can't fucking put into words.
Favorite moment: *wants to cheat and include the ending of issue 13* okay from the movies? Probably the TIE Fighter escape or the rooftop scene in TROS with Zorii. I love the escape sequence just cos of how Star Warsy and fun it is - and it's a great example of Poe's personality? The rooftop scene I love because it's just...a really great moment of vulnerability from him. OH GOD AND THE HANDTOUCH? When he's trying to decide what to do with Finn and Rose's plan and goes to Leia to gather his courage and resolve and he puts his hand on hers I just. gOD.
Idea for a story: I really want to write a fic based off a dream I had last November where I was on a mission with him, Finn, Rey, Kaydel, Rose and Beaumont...but I don't know if I'd want to write it as a reader fic or damerey fic (I think it'd be appropriate for a reader fic, since it prompted me into getting back into reader fic).
Unpopular opinion: I don't! Think! He's arrogant!! This comes up a lot in some canon novels and it drives me batty everytime because like... he's confident yes he can be smug sometimes yes, but he doesn't try to be impressive (most of the time) he just says the truth that he has the experience to back him on. The fact that "vainglorious" "self-involved" and "narcissistic" are all terms that have been canonically used abt him annoys me to no end. He's cocksure, yes, but for every positive thing he has to say about himself, he's got even more praise and encouragement for the people around him.
Favorite relationship: Poe and Leia. Like. God. They're everything to me.
Favorite headcanon: I like the idea that when he was seventeen after he left Zorii (and toppled a criminal empire good for him), he stayed with Yegar on the Colossus for some time before he got the courage to see Kes again. I also headcanon that Poe is kind of....an amplifier for the Force.
send me a character!

I Will Now Express Every Thought I Have About Pacific Rim: The Black
⚠️ spoilers for the whole thing baby
I actually forgot Pacific Rim: The Black was premiering today until I saw it in an article this morning! When I first heard about it months ago, I was decidedly not sold on a Pacific Rim anime. Uprising burnt me the fuck out and I don’t have a lot of trust left in me for new entries to the franchise. But I had heard rumblings of Raleigh and Herc being referenced after going into #pacificrim and I decided I may as well check out to see what was up! I binged it in 4 hours and it sure was a whirlwind, I’ll tell ya
The Plot
I really enjoy the setting and initial concept! We’re so use to seeing Kaiju/Jaegar shenanigans play out within these major cities with helpless civilians everywhere that spending so much time in a lonesome desert and these destroyed civilizations was really cool and indicative of the changes Pacific Rim has undergone in the last few years. I also looooved the Desert Settlement from the beginning!! It seemed really homey and picturesque; I wish we’d spent more time with the other survivors and got to see more of their day to day aside from farming and sitting.
I also found the first episode set up to be really tight and well written! I was hooked during the initial flashback, Hayley and Taylor’s fight was really poignant and well acted, and the reveal of Atlas Destroyer felt really huge and epic!!
But once we left the Desert Settlement and the plot started actually moving along, the pacing becomes suuuper rough. We spent way too long in Bogan with Shane and Mei; there’s only 7 episodes and we spent, like, 3? 4? within the confines of that camp and I felt it weighed the plot down. Boy is introduced in the 2nd episode and, because the narrative spends so much time on Shane’s evil machinations and Mei’s back story, we still don’t know anything concrete about his origins or purpose 3 episodes later! That felt frustrating to me
The story beats overall were very predictable. I was able to pick up on Mei’s backstory via her dynamic with Shane in their introductions, so her memories felt too built up and too hollow once they were revealed. The same with the reveal of Boy’s Kaiju form; he was in a big green test tube in a PPDC base - I assumed immediately he was a part-kaiju experiment and again his reveal felt hollow, especially after the glacial pace of it’s development.
Even when events weren’t predictable, they lacked weight. The appearance of several Kaiju Breaches in “Boneyard” felt very cheap for some reason; I wasn’t scared and I didn’t feel tense about these odds mounting against the protagonists. This was just happening and I was just watching.
The Art Direction and Animation
I’m very obsessed with all the new Kaiju we got from this; I love how Copperhead is rendered, they’re a joy to see on screen!! The Rippers are also very cute and deserve little plushies...i love these neat little dogs. Boy’s Kaiju Form is very intimidating with an interesting color palette and I loved seeing him next to Copperhead’s highly saturated design!
That’s unfortunately all that I liked however; All the human character design is unmemorable to me. Every character looks exactly like another easily identifiable anime character from a different property (Hayley looks exactly like Zero Suit Samus to me, for example. And Mei kept reminding me of both Bernadetta Fire Emblem and Motoko Kusanagi from GitS. The list goes on).
I can sort of understand why they’re so bland? A franchise going from Live Action to something as heavily stylized as anime is probably a really difficult transition and these designs are probably meant to be more lowkey than more unique anime designs in order to help that transition. But realistically stylized designs can still be recognizable and unique! These feel uninspired and bare bones.
I have no problem with the switch to CGI animation that modern anime is doing because I know it’s a lot cheaper to produce and it can still be really unique and striking! But The Black’s model animation felt very stilted and inconsistent. I don’t have a lot of knowledge about animating so I don’t think I can accurately describe what I disliked? Wooden is probably the best term. Character movements felt wooden and things like hair and clothes felt plastic.
Impacts also had very little weight. The fight between Tayler/Mei and Copperhead reminded me of when you’re in a dream and trying to punch something, but you can’t punch hard. It was simply too floaty and too soft. The final showdown in “Showdown” was better, but not by much. It was very immersion breaking seeing these Giant Robots and Giant Monsters unable to throw a real solid hit!
Characters
My favorite character was unequivocally Joel Wyrick. We love Joel Wyrick in this house! Joel’s character has real charisma and charm. I love his flirtations with Loa, how his cocky disposition is juxtaposed with his drinking problem and later insecurities over his lost memories, and his genuine kindness shown to Mei, Taylor, and Boy. No one ever plays with Boy, they just run after him and drag him around...but Joel has this moment in “Escape from Bogan” where he kneels down to Boy and helps him collect rocks. It was sweet!
So of course, when Joel dies for absolutely no reason 5 minutes later - pissed! I was pissed! I yelled “COME ON” aloud in my studio apartment! I was genuinely so excited to see him interact more with the rest of cast then, poof. No More Joel.
His death felt like it was for shock value to me rather than actual narrative development. Why kill him when we still don’t fully understand his and Mei’s relationship? Why were they so close? Were they childhood friends, or just coworkers that happen to become friends? Why did he specifically know all the details of Shane’s abuse towards Mei before she did?
What did his death accomplish? It made Mei sad...ok? She was already...very sad. Her running away from Shane already had consequences - the consequences of Shane coming after them for revenge in the future. Why did Joel have to become a causality?
His death is ultimately tied to Mei’s character arc which is, unfortunately, my least favorite :c I find Mei to be a really one dimensional character with a personality, backstory, outlook, and motivation that I’ve seen done a million times before with a million other characters. She feels very out of place in the franchise as a whole - Pacific Rim is, at it’s core, a story about connecting with others. Her self-centric arc and lack of desire to connect outside of drifting really alienates her from the story at large and it frustrates me how long The Black’s narrative spends on her.
Hayley and Taylor were otherwise very interesting in the pilot episode, but become similarly one dimensional at the story chugs on. Taylor’s unflinching (bordering on unhealthy) faith in their parents was really interesting next to Hayley’s complete acceptance of their parents’ death. But once the two of them make up their differences, they lack an interesting dynamic and become very passive protagonists.
Taylor especially has no personality - how would you describe Taylor? He’s...brave. He’s the older brother. He’s a leader? He’s nice? There is nothing noteworthy about him at all, which is sad considering I think he has the potential to be a really interesting way to explore the original movie’s influence on The Black’s story.
Hayley’s grief and self-blame are more interesting than Taylor’s...nothingness, but she still falls into this one-note trope of being the naive, excitable little sister. I guess I feel abnormally frustrated about this flat character writing because Pacific Rim’s incredibly unique cast has always been an inspiration to me! It feels sad that this new iteration into the series is full of what feel like stock characters.
Then we get to Boy. How come Boy can’t have a person name? It’s specifically written in a dialogue between Taylor and Hayley: “I’m not going to call him Chad or Barnaby or one of those names for a baby brother you wanted as a kid,”
Why?
He’s by all accounts a human child when they find him. Yes, he was found in a big green test tube - but he walks and acts just like a human child. The only difference, seemingly, is that he is non-verbal and engages in strange/annoying behavior (running off, eating bugs, etc). So he isn’t deserving of a name?? I don’t know why that makes me so mad, it just does. it’s like they refuse to treat him as a human even before they find out he’s a Kaiju  - it’s super weird! How can the story sell me on the three of them becoming found family (like they’re seemingly trying to do) if the protagonists won’t even treat this kid like a kid??
Misc. Thoughts
The callbacks to Stacker, Herc, and Raleigh were cool! I also like that Herc is a major plot point! We love Herc Hanson and it’s what he deserves. I also find Loa’s connection to Horizon Bravo very interesting...and the fact we’re getting Kaiju cultist lore! Love that! Love that!
Fucked up that the only two dark skinned characters were: 1) removed from the story 10 minutes in with no call back yet, 2) Killed after having 1 line of dialogue and fridged for the character development of the blonde white girl. I really need to know what the deal with those 4 characters leaving in the beginning was about - I absolutely thought we’d see them again by now, but no dice
I don’t know how to feel about Ajax and have no clue what their purpose in the story is. They’re cool, but whats the point?
If Mei and Taylor are paired up together romantically, I’m putting Craig Kyle and Greg Johnson in the time out box. Very tired of seeing random hetero romance B plots in stories that can’t even get their A plots together
Overall, it’s kind of subpar! It has the foundations of a really interesting story, but the pacing and characters really took me out of it. I’m interested in Season 2! I know season 2 is already ordered and I’d love to see how things continue to develop, see if the character writing gets any better - but I’m not too hopeful unfortunately. I really really love Pacific Rim after all these years and I’m happy to still be getting content and world building! There’s just sooo much I would change about this however. At least fanfiction’s free!
Thanks for reading all this, I have ADHD and just go on and on if u let me. hmu if You Too have thoughts about Pacific Rim: The Black and have no one to talk abt them with

ok so, now that my opinions have had time to age a while, here’s a SHORT version of my Pacific Rim: Uprising review.
Was this movie a complete out of control raging dumpster fire with several past-date and poorly-constructed fireworks going off unpredictably and dangerously in random directions, an inferno of stale McDonalds, and a family of raccoons fleeing in terror? Oh yes. Can I recommend it to anyone? Absolutely not.
Did I enjoy it MUCH more than I expected to? Quite a bit, actually? Yes. Yes I did. (The first one-third of it much more than the second-third, and the second-third rather more than the last third.) BUT.
For all its (many, many) faults it did give us these images:
Tumblr media
SRIRACHA MAN
Tumblr media
WAIT! He isn’t done! WINDOW SURPRISE! He’s on the side of your building, with (re)theft in his mind! PARKOUR MAN WINDOW SURPRISE JAKE PENTECOST ok it doesn’t really scan like Actual Cannibal Shia LaBouef but. y’know
Tumblr media
HILARIOUSLY-TIMED HILARIOUSLY-AUDIBLE B O N K
Tumblr media
this expression
Tumblr media
this WHOLE scene with the sprinjkles my man Jake is tired and mildly unhinged and hungry and he wants to eat his goddamn ice cream in PEACE this fughkcin Protagonist Hero Man of a dude is trying to tell him Important Plot Information and he is NOT having it. I love him. Wish they’d shown a bit more of the transition between this facet of his behavior and the more straight-laced version of him later on but, eh. Raging dumpster fire!! ANYWAYS THE GOOD STUFF
Tumblr media
YEAH THIS SHOT OF DR. GOTTLIEB TOSSING BACK A CUP OF COLD TEA LIKE IT’S A SHOT. and the fact that you can TELL he was just about to drink it at The Optimal Temperature, but heard that Newton was onsite and left it there to get cold while he ran out to meet him and do this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
....anyways,,,
Tumblr media
oh yeah this shot, I just like to make fun of this shot c’mon y’all CMON Y’ALL this is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen (not you Charlie Day, it’s the composition of the whole thing, what happened) its all needlessly grimdark and indistinct and I GUESS you wanted the focus on Alice’s tank but its NOT the focus because NEWTON’S ENTIRE ASS is FRONT AND CENTER taking up the ENTIRE focus of this shot and OBSCURING the tank, which is the ONLY thing in the room (BESIDES NEWTON’S ASS) that ISN’T super grimdark and impossible to see?? WAS THIS ON PURPOSE? WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS WHEN STAGING THIS?? WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE I’M JUST IN AWE AT HOW UNHINGED THIS IS WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS WHO DID THIS
Tumblr media
oh yeah angry science lady who doesn’t like handshakes and hasn’t got the time for social niceties when she’s too busy trying to save the world, I love her she’s fun, you go ma’am handshakes are gross
Tumblr media
she and my other favorite science person (in this movie where Newton is Badwrong) also stood next to each other a whole Several times and it made my heart happy even as the plot of the movie was breaking down into a million unrelated pieces of radioactive garbage that was on fire
conclusion:
don’t watch it, but absolutely listen to me yell about it instead, I did this so you don’t have to, lets watch Pacific Rim (The Original) together instead, I’m not saying that movie is perfect either but boy does it hold itself together better than whatever several different unrelated apocalypses happened HERE

the precursors have two ways to unwind: peeling newt like an orange via drift, OR sitting down for their full dvr of nothing but the hgtv show love it or list it.
love it or list it is the story of hilary farr, interior designer, and david visentin, home realtor, in their quest to fucking murder each other and also help a family of the week decide whether to flip or sell their house
they loathe each other. its for a bit yes, but the disdain and hatred they have for each other is unparalleled
SO on days they're not down for torture, the precursors relax with a nice red and enjoy giggling at the only two worthy humans on the planet absolutely snipe and eviscerate each other verbally. it brings them such joy
NEWT loves it because those nights he can just chill and not be in horrible agony for several hours, and also it reminds him that normalcy and having a family still exists in the world. wouldn't it be nice
SO its post uprising, newmann are having a nice sunday night. hermann has his blanc, newt's finishing off the last of the lemon-lavender edibles vanessa gave them, it's great. cabin flipping or whatever fades out, hermann thinks hm maybe we'll watch something else
AND THEN
bum bum bum bada bum bum bum bium
its like a switch flips newt LOSES IT. he's BAWLING. there are VIOLA DAVIS levels of crying here
hermann's like oh my GOD newton are you alright??? and newt barely gets out theyyy,,,, hate e ach o the r so muc h hermann..... ITS A LOVE IT OR LIST IT NIGHT ITS OKAY
and hermann like. glances towards his cell phone to which he has the numbers saved of newt's psych and also anako. he does not want to call either. so he's like alright. is this a trigger for you? and newts like NO IM OKAY ITS OKAY. and hermann like kinda glances at the memories a little bit and is somehow even more confused
he asks newt if he wants him to turn it off and newts like NO i love this episo de... it s so fun nny. so they just fucking sit there. newt crying happy tears over hilary berating david's choice of location, and hermann glancing over every, mmmm, 2 seconds or so wondering what the fuck is so alluring about this show to evil aliens.
this goes on for sixty minutes
newt like kinda starts to calm down around the 45 minute mark until david snipply congratulates hilary on winning the family and then it's just dry sobs. hermann has finished HALF the wine by himself
and THAT is why pacific rim uprising is a comedy

Thoughts and feelings about Pacific Rim 2?
you sure you wanna open up that particular can of worms?
movie review time! be warned i'm not in a good mood as i am shaking in pain, however this review would have been scathing regardless. and none of this is to say pacific rim is perfect, it's not, but... aye, i have no words for the world of difference there. oh wait! i do:
so. first and foremost, i hate it. as both a movie and a sequel. did i find it entertaining? yes, mildly, so i suppose it did its job, however the only thing that keeps me watching it is because, simply, it's part of the pacific rim franchise whether we like it or not. therefore, i squeeze as much salvageable content from it as i can, such as how one might analyze the precursors, how we are to view hermann and newt as characters pre-, during, and post-uprising, what we are to expect from drifting (though this one i take with a grain of salt, there is a whole other rant preserved for the joke of an attempt to develop that shit within the movie)
one of my biggest issues with pacific rim is really simple: it plays out like DeKnight did not watch the first fucking movie or was scrolling through twitter while doing it and decided he'd make a cash grab since the first one was relatively popular. "haha the kaiju were going for mount fuji the whole time!!" bitch no they weren't!!! why the fuck did they end up anywhere near sydney, australia, then!!! why did they turn tail on places like manila and san fran instead of heading straight for japan!!! WHY DID THE ONE THAT WAS IN JAPAN NOT SUCCEED, THERE'S NO WAY WITH THOSE MARK 1 JAEGERS THEY'D HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REASONABLY FIGURE OUT THEIR PLAN AND WHERE THEY WERE GOING IN TIME TO STOP THEM!!! newt literally lays out what they are doing in the first movie and they completely ignored that!!! not to mention, if the destruction from elements found in mount fuji would have been enough to terraform the earth, WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST FUCKING DO THAT WHEN THEY WERE SUPPOSEDLY ON EARTH AGES AGO??? THERE WERE VOLCANOES WITH THOSE SAME ELEMENTS BEFORE RIGHT NOW, VOLCANOES ARE NOT A RELATIVELY NEW THING EARTH CREATED SUDDENLY AND I WOULD IMAGINE NEITHER ARE THOSE ELEMENTS!!! IT MAKES NO SENSE!!! and.... okay the fucking drones. how did those bitches make breaches??? we know the breach is some result of precursor/kaiju technology, apparently they know the breach's atomic structure as hermann said in the first movie, but how tf some kaiju organs and tech from earth only is ALL it takes to open a breach... illudes and confuses me... why were no more breaches made by the precursors once they realized how long and how many resources it was taking to kill the humans off??? if it's??? shit they could do with simple earth materials + their own biology??? they could have ended things much faster??? shit just doesn't add up, idk, that was Vague and Annoyed Me
and the jaegers.... were....... strange? the fight scenes were so underwhelming, i could count on one hand the number of maneuvers—NOT SCENES, MANEUVERS—i thought were badass and moved well. their fighting was confusing and paced really weird and some of the moves they pulled... don't... work like that... like some of those scenes were just hand-to-hand combat but in big robot form and they didn't sit right with me at all.
and the characters......... oh my word, the characters. look: i love jake pentecost with all of my heart and soul and john boyega's beautiful acting just barely saves the movie from its poor writing. i do love him as a character. but can someone explain to me why in the world they thought it was a good idea to make the only black guy a black market thief/runner, deep-record criminal with daddy and authority issues, and who they dare try to play off as some kind of lazy??? they made him every stereotype they could and said "yeah let's go with that". i'm- aaaaaaaaaaaaaa and what was with the child soldiers??? ROBOCOPS?????? mako....... character assassination at its worst........ my baby......... but the movie was paced so GOD DAMN POORLY I GOT BORED AND LITERALLY MISSED HER DYING THE FIRST TIME I WATCHED IT. and i couldn't tell you the names of half of those poor damn kids, i really couldn't. and can i also say they killed off one of the only two darker skinned kids?? like y'all???? the other darker skinned kids (one of the children i can't remember the names of because it was uttered ONCE in the entire movie or some shit) didn't even GET characterization. my whole heart goes out to her and those other underdeveloped fucks. speaking of...... i am ashamed about jules. from the movie that brought us the mako mori test, they threw in a girl simply for the sake of some shitty, awkward, and unexplained love triangle between jake and White Angst without much else to put to her name. she deserved better. amara was... a decent shot, but very hit or miss because of the writing. i, personally, am very neutral about her leaning towards liking her, but i know people who swing love and who swing hate. liwen was like,,,, they tried really hard to make her unlikable at the beginning because "oh no, she must be the villain! GOTTEM plot twist!!!" and then suddenly she's no longer. threatening everyone except newt. idk i feel like they leaned to heavily one way and i got whiplash when she's actually another but there was nothing to... portray that. at all. i do like her character, and that says a lot because they got me to sympathize with a capitalist without actually regretting it later, but there could/should have been More there. she was powerful, though, in multiple different aspects, and we saw that from her CONSISTENTLY and i 😳🥵👀💕 mako mori test pass for her
now, let's talk about hermann (and by extention, newton, however he'll be getting a section all his own the rat bastard). that man is one of the single instances of decent cross-movie characterization i saw in the whole god damn film. the idea that he takes on newton's roles, that he is more outspoken for himself, that he is just slightly more unhinged after his drift with newton: THAT is on point. he's himself, you can see it, you still know that he's hermann with ever step, but there's something that has shifted in him in those 10 years and it's good without being too much. the "i still get nightmares" scene, the way he presents himself, that scene gives me chills because god bless burn gorman and his acting ability. every face and intonation of his voice is just wonderful and i think his performance was great for what he was given. king shit.
the biggest disappointment of my life came in the form of a kaiju vest wearing bitch at work. at his corporate job. as a boss. for a tech company that undermines all of his and, frankly, hermann's work over their lifetimes. 10 years older and exaggerated to the teeth. newton "move you fascist" geiszler. let me preface this by stating for all to see that i do not hate the idea of newton being the villain. story wise it was a bold move and there was something possible there. BUT THE IMPLICATION THAT ONE OF THE MOST OBVIOUSLY NEURODIVERGENT CHARACTERS IN THE WHOLE FUCKING FRANCHISE, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THAT HE HAS BEEN CHARACTERIZED AS HAVING A "BORDERLINE MANIC PERSONALITY" AKA HAVING ONE OF THE MOST DEMONIZED MENTAL ILLNESSES OUT THERE, ENDS UP ACTING AS THE GOD DAMN VILLAIN OF THE STORY IS A HOT GARBAGE TAKE WHEN YOU FACTOR IN THINGS LIKE POOR WRITING NOT MAKING IT CLEAR WHETHER OR NOT NEWTON IS EVEN IN CONTROL OF HIS OWN FACULTIES AND THE VAGUENESS OF "WILL HE BE 'REDEEMED' OR NOT" BEING UP IN THE AIR LIKELY NEVER TO BE CANONICALLY FUCKING ANSWERED BECAUSE BECKHAM AND DEKNIGHT SHAT OUT A MOVIE THAT BOMBED IN THE BOX OFFICE. we aren't even gonna TALK about the fact that this bitch got AWAY with it despite not even acting in a remotely stable way comparable to himself in the first movie in the 10 years he supposedly dropped off the map from all of his friends because, clearly, hermann hadn't seen him or he wouldn't be so excited with a picture of the two of them on his desk, nor would he have to tell newton about his idea for rocket thrusters with kaiju blood fuel because he would have simply written to him about it. for some strange reason people see his ass show up decked out in a suit he wouldn't even wear for Stacker Fucking Pentecost and a behavior of "Haha Gotta Listen To The Boss" and think "ah, yes, well, time changes a person. THIS BITCH HAS APPARENTLY BEEN LIKE THIS THE WHOLE TIME, YOU THINK HE GOT A JOB WITH LIWEN LOOKING AND ACTING LIKE HE DID BEFORE AND THERE WAS A SHIFT OVER TIME? NO, HE HAD TO HAVE CHANGED IN A SPLIT DECISION AND LIED ABOUT HIMSELF THROUGH HIS TEETH AND NO ONE CONTACTED HIM, OR WAS WORRIED ABOUT HIM, OR DECIDEDLY THOUGHT "YOU KNOW, HE MAY BE EMBOLDENED THAT HE SAVED THE WORLD, BUT I THINK SOMETHING LIKE THAT WOULD HAVE THE EXACT OPPOSITE EFFECT ON HIM AND HE WOULD DO HIS BEST TO AMPLIFY HIS CURRENT STANDING TRAITS. LISTENING TO AND KISSING THE BOOT OF AUTHORITY FIGURES? DIVORCING HIMSELF FROM HIS WORK WITH KAIJU XENOBIOLOGY THAT EVEN HERMANN PICKED UP? TO BECOME THE THING HE HATES? AND FOR WHAT? MONEY? FAME? BITCH WHO ARE YOU?" unreasonable. ridiculous attempt to do this just for a plot twist that was underwhelming at best. i've decided to stick to the fan theory that he was not in control 99% of the time but literally that movie causes such a hellfire path to appear in my wake as i think about it because i know people who don't take it like that and think newt wants what's happening because "haha horny kaiju man" and i wish to scream at the top of my lungs because this is exactly WHY you CANNOT spare ANY EXPENSE to the GOOD, PROPER, INTRICATE directing and writing of a character who is neurodivergent and also ONE OF THE CENTERS OF NOT JUST THE MOVIE YOU'RE WRITING, BUT THE FUCKING MOVIE AFTER THAT. i could go on but i sincerely don't fucking want to, despite how long i've been waiting for someone to willingly hear me out on all of this. all i'll say is if by some miracle they are greenlit for a third film and deknight's working on it and i see ANY sign of a bury your gays end for newt, i'm going to commit the first hate crime against a cishet white male.
to end, the only valid kaiju in that movie was the mega-kaiju, i don't remember the appearance or the names of the three that got through the breaches but the mega-kaiju could kill me and i'd die happy 🥰 beautiful design, that scale comparison when it came face to face with newt? amazing, chills, *chef's kiss* there are exactly two things i liked about uprising and that bitch is one of them.
sorry if this isn't what you wanted, but as i said i am in a bit of a bad mood and have been curled up in bed trying not to think that i'm dying and i've repressed all of this for a couple months now and very few people have actually heard PORTIONS of my frustration so. here it is.

Super Robot Wars: Pacific Rim
A While Ago (over a month ago), I asked people what they thought Pacific Rim would connect to in a Super Robot Wars game.   Now, I’m going to share my thoughts based in part on those thoughts, and some of my own after scouring every entry in the whole series.
Which means, this is gonna get weird.
This will go stage by stage, because Pacific Rim, even including Uprising, can only really bring in a few stages.
Stage 1: The Kaiju War
In this prologue stage, we’d have Gypsy Danger battle Knifehead, but with one piece of added help:  Getter Robo!
Even then, it goes about as well as you expect.  Not only does Raleigh’s brother die, but so does Musashi! Both mecha are taken down in the battle, but not before Knifehead is destroyed.
Stage 2: The Wall
This one occurs in Australia, and has Striker Eureka appear to help against the Kaiju.  The Player’s character and current crew/battleship (probably the Nadesico-C) appear to aid against it, or against another foe before the Kaiju/Jaeger show up.  Pretty straight forward, but a MYSTERIOUS PERSON is watching and says that they are glad they have allies even after all this time.
Stage 3: The Drift
This is where Raleigh is recruited into the Pan-Pacific Defense Force. Which is currently on its last legs because the World Government's Autonomous Peacekeeping Organization, the A-Laws, funded the wall instead.
So far, Stacer Pentecost has recruited the usual crew from the film (Probably only Eureka and Gypsy are playable), but he has a few more.  Getter Robo G (Ryou and Hayato help Raleigh a little emotionally because they are bros and this is OLD SCHOOl Getter), Great Mazinger (from Mazinger Z Infinity), and ...
Kiryu.
Stacker Pentacost also leaves to talk with “The Ambassadors” before letting Mako take over the rest of the tour.
When Mako and Raleigh drift, and the RABBIT occurs, we get a level of Coyote Tango battling Onibaba.
Stage 4: Double Event
Shortly afterward, we have a double event, and this is where things get ABSOLUTELY NUTS.
The event occurs, and by the time the level ‘starts’, all the mechs are injured and Crimson Typhoon/Cherno Alpha are already destroyed.
Battle for a bit, then EMP fries the mechs.
And things get worse.  Remember, Kiryu is in play, so it goes nuts -- but not in the way people fear. It still attacks the Kaiju, just not under the player’s control.  They have to beat on it a bit to allow Akane to get in the cockpit and ‘talk it down’.
It roars one last time and goes into alignment.
But how can you beat it down?  Well, Great Mazinger and Getter Robo G manage to survive the takedown, but because Great is Size M, and G is Size L, and the Kaiju/KIryu are Size LL, this is tough stuff.
Which is where the Ambassadors come in.  The Fairies of Infant Island call Mothra (Imago) (Size LL) to aid.
That helps, and when Kiryu regains control, it calls Godzilla himself to aid.
Which is also when Gypsy Danger arrives.
So now the player has Great Mazinger, Getter Robo G, Kiryu, Mothra, and Godzilla to fight 2 Kaiju.
To which the Mysterious Person from before says “No, no, no.  That won’t do!”
Suddenly! The city tears itself apart and a strange castle descends from the clouds.  From the castle, riding a bicycle through the air comes the witch Bandora.
Yes, we’re going there!
Bandora proclaims that she is glad to see her allies from 65 Million years ago are back. Now they can get back to slaying out all life on earth!  And she’s also particularly miffed to see a Dinosaur still around.  She summons several Dora Titans (her mook monster), Griffozar, and Dora Minotaur to aid the rift Kaiju.
At which points the player's battleship arrives.
As soon as one of the Kaiju or Dora Minotaur is defeated (Griffozar retreats), the restore to full health with the others.  After some doom proclamations, Raleigh and Mako rally with a few others, and we get the last bit of aid.
At which point, the last bit of help for this overly-complex level arrives.
Daizayujin and the Zyurangers.
Heroic speeches and butt-kicking apply aplenty.
When this is done, Bandora retreats, Godzilla slinks off (for now), and things are hashed out.
Remember in Pacific Rim when Newt said that they tried before back with the Dinosaurs?  Guess who also has a beef with the Dinosaurs?   Getter Robo, yeah, but also Bandora.
Which is why they have a villain team up for the game.
So many of the big Ranger moments (IE: The Green Ranger arc) have Pacific Rim moments scattered throughout.
But after that, the next big level is ...
Stage 5: The Breach
The assault on the breach, Bandora beefs things up, Godzilla helps out once again, and if you do things, Striker Eureka is kept around.
At the close of the level, the player still need a Big Boom to close it.  So, it ends up a mix of big attacks (IE: Shine Spark) to seal it for good.
After this is a Time Skip where we set off to fix Pacific Rim: Uprising.
Stage 6: The Rogue Jaeger
This is all about setting up the new recruits, and fending off some other faction that is attacking.  Doesn’t matter who, but the rest of it plays out as normal. The A-Laws are gone, but many threats such as Doctor Hell and Bandora are still active.
Stage 7: The Black Jaeger
This is the Obsidian Fury attack on the UN, though obvious Mako doesn’t die.  She gets to come back with Raleigh for Gypsy Danger’s return.  But she’s still hurt and there’s damage to the UN and all that.
Stage 8: Arctic Battleground
Gypsy Avenger vs Obdidian Fury 1v1 until Bandor gets involved, revealing she now has “Dokita-Clay” to make her monsters even stronger!
This big battle against Dora Frank also sees the appearance of Bandora’s master, Dai-Satan (Yes, really), making this a rough battle.
And it’s all a distraction.
Stage 9: Shatterdome Attacked!
The Mass-Produced Jaegers are revealed to be pawns of the Precursors.  Newt was put under a spell by Bandora to corrupt the program from within, and now they and more Super-Monsters are on the attack.
The base is aided by the return of Earth’s Kaiju: Godzilla and Mothra.  Godzilla gains his ‘ultimate’ attack in this battle “King of the Monsters” --where he summons all the other earth monsters (Rodan, Anguirus, King Caesar, and Mothra) to beat down on a foe.  So the base is saved, especially when your reinforcements arrive, but 3 rift kaiju have been released.
Stage 10: TOKYO S.O.S.
3 Kaiju from the rift.  Backed up by Heterodyne, Bandora’s monsters (ALL of them, serving as minions here, probably maybe 3 or 4 from a list of: Dora Minotauros, Dora Sphinx, Dora Raiger, Dora Knight, Dora Tortoise, Dora Frank, Satan Frank, Dora Unicorn), Mass-produced Jaegers, Obsidian Furies (as elite mooks), Griffozar, Dai-Satan, and Dora Talos.    When one of the Rift Kaiju is destroyed, the Mega-Kaiju is formed.
And when Dora Talos or Dai Satan is brought to 0, it fully heals and Dora Talos turns into Satan Talos.
But this is the last battle for Pacific Rim and Zyuranger.  And as you can see, it’s one hell of a big blow-out.
And it’s still not the final kaiju enemy, that comes from Godzilla’s end, as King Ghidorah.   But that’s his own journey.

Are you planning on making a return to some of the older FF-XIII stories you made a while ago? I'm talking The Vestige, etc.
Probably not.
To be honest, the Pacific Rim sequel was one of the single worst movies I have ever seen. It was so bad that it basically killed any thoughts I had of revisiting The Vestige more fully since every time I think of Pacific Rim, I think of that steaming pile of excrement of a sequel.
Really, it was crap. Just so, so crap. It’s hard to imagine how anyone could look at the original and then look at the sequel and then think the sequel was good. It was painfully lame in every way.
Just think about it.
You have a company manufacturing Jaegers that apparently have kaijuu brain things inside them… but nobody notices. I mean… the Jager is literally full of weird kaijuu crap and nobody notices. Does nobody do a final check after or during construction? They just… never look I guess.
Then you have rookies who have never piloted a proper Jaeger randomly piloting them like experts without showing fear or hesitation while fighting against the strongest kaijuu yet encountered. WTF. I don’t think they understand how skill acquisition and combat mentality develop.
And let’s not forget the idiocy of a rogue Jaeger sailing right into Sydney Harbour because, I don’t know, maybe the largest city in Australia that is right on the coast should probably have sonar and other sensor technology since they were kind of in a war against things that attack from the ocean. I mean… they have massive guns but no sonar or radar? That’s just dumb.
Then the action itself is just garbage. The robots have zero weight to them. It’s like watching a bunch of plastic transformers fight. When a two-thousand-tonne robot punches something in the face it should look and feel heavy. Instead, it feels like a dude in a suit fighting another dude in a suit.
Also, the Jaeger designs sucked. They did. Everything looked fairly generic and the weapon choices were quite frankly bizarre.
You’re going to put a sword in one arm. Just one? Really? The robot has two arms right? And the gravity sling is just stupid. Yes, a weapon that can only work by guaranteeing stupidly huge amounts of collateral property damage. I’m sure any military/government in the world would want that.
And then you have Saber Athena. I mean… it looks okay, I guess, and the name is cool… but it’s armour is literally tin foil. Do the designers realise that the Jaeger is going to commit to hand-to-hand combat? Was their plan to build something so fast and agile it would never get hit? Because if it was, that’s just dumb.
Then you have things like a giant ball and chain thingie. I mean… why? That’s stupid. Kaijuu are basically designed to withstand massive amounts of blunt force trauma. Beating a Kaijuu to death without the use of blades or explosives is basically impossible (aside from the smaller, crappier kaijuu that started the whole mess). How about, I don’t know, anything else? You could put a massive artillery cannon inside the arm or even just a giant blade. Almost anything would have done better.
And the whip weapon. WTF. Did the designers of the weapon even watch the first movie? How many times would you have to whip a kaijuu to kill it? Meanwhile, over in Striker Eureka town, short, thick wrist-blades are busy amputating limbs and impaling critical organs. Why would you go away from what works? Not to mention holding onto the whip when it gets grabbed by something that weights several times your mass is idiotic. What did the think would happen? Oh wait… these are random rookies because obviously there were no backup pilots left with any experience and the program doesn’t keep any recently retired pilots on call. Because that would make sense and the whole movie doesn’t make sense.
I have, in my entire life, never watched a movie that so thoroughly killed my enthusiasm for a franchise. It would be impressive if it was planned, but, really, the sheer level of incompetence surrounding everything in that movie means it wasn’t planned. They really thought what they were doing was good or cool.
FFS. Transformers is a better Pacific Rim movie than Pacific Rim Uprising.
I wish I’d walked out of the movie halfway through. It would have meant I wasted my money, but at least I’d be able to imagine it somehow got better at the end instead of knowing it plumbed new levels of failure that, quite frankly, transcend what I thought possible to reach a kind of uber crapness.

We’re All Works In Progress
So, I watched Pacific Rim: Uprising (yes I pirated it, no I don’t feel bad and you won’t convince me I did anything wrong) all the way through for the first time today. And this doesn’t seem like a big deal but...well, today was Chinese New Year in the Pacific coast (in China it was yesterday) and it’s the end of the decade where I’ve changed and grown so much that I can hardly believe.
See, in 2011 I met this really sweet, really passionate man. The first time Sebastian took me to his dorm, he pointed out the dean’s building, the proctor’s building, and where campus security vans parked for the night in case I felt uncomfortable. In 2013 he took me to see Pacific Rim over my objections that it looked stupid, and I loved it. I also had “Can’t Help Falling in Love” stuck in my head for days, both because of Sebastian and the fact that I thought it was a great song for the two scientist characters. I married Sebastian in 2016, and in 2017 he wrapped his hands around my neck and squeezed until I kicked him off me and ran away.
Yeah. If you’ve seen the second Pacific Rim movie, you probably know which scene sent me screaming and crying and throwing up in the bathroom. All over a trigger I didn’t know I had until I watched a character I considered to be in a relationship with another character unexpectedly wrapped his hands around his beloved’s neck and squeezed. And so for a really long time I didn’t really touch that fandom. But then the start of the decade rolled around and I found a DVD of the first movie, which I bought because I loved it. I didn’t want him to take that away from me too.
So I watched Pacific Rim: Uprising today, and it’s not good, but I watched all the way through without feeling sad that he didn’t watch it with me, without panicked that choking was happening between characters who hadn’t discussed it first. I still get a little weirded out when people touch my neck, but we’re all works in progress. And this particular work in progress is going to join a fandom two years late out of successful survival. Fuck you Sebastian.
