Hey, sorry, if you had any thoughts about the story of yanxi palace I would love to read them! I am watching the kdrama and I am loving it! I love all these awful women ( I also love that there are like three men with horrible hairstyle)

Omg where to start on Yanxi. It's one of my favorite cdramas, and I watched it during my Minglan-Yanxi-Ruyi era, which was super dominated by shows that were primarily about women, whether that was like, in the harem or just regular courtyard drama, and it was part of those three shows that like, really informed how I like to write about historical women in my own fic and original fiction.

Yanxi is a really awesome drama in a way because the drama lets Wei Yingluo be just as cruel and vicious and petty and vindictive and eye for an eye as she can be, and it doesn't judge her for having these urges and her anger and all her cruelty. It doesn't judge her for choosing violence or wanting to choose violence! Or doing what it takes to survive! It's not about being classy or about being good.

But at the same time, Wei Yingluo cares about other women. She forms really strong and deep attachments to other women (and the other women in this drama ARE ALSO motivated by the other women in their lives, whether they're good or evil, this is a world where women are friends and enemies and have tension and just! they interact! they exist in a world together! it's a shitty world for all of them from top to bottom, but that doesn't mean they stop caring about each other!) and Yingluo is allowed to love and love deeply.

Like, centrally, this is illuminated by Yingluo's love for her older sister, Wei Yingning, and her desire to seek justice for Yingning's death. I remember looking all that she's doing, especially that reveal at the very end of the drama and just, bawling because Yingluo loves her sister so much. She was a little girl with no power, no connections, no real ability except her own determination, and she looked at the injustice of her older sister's death, and went "fuck that, I want whoever to did this to bleed, I want him to choke on it," and then for the next twenty-four years of her life, never forgot it. She electrocuted his mother who ordered her sister killed! She repeatedly humiliated Hongzhou, and when she realized that Qianlong wouldn't kill his half brother without like, some REALLY grave crime, Yingluo settled in for the long haul to make sure that Hongzhou would be pushed into a position where he felt like he had to revolt and force Qianlong to kill him.

Like, for everyone else in this show, Yingning was no one important. She was just a servant. Yes, one who died unjustly, but by the standards of the day, Hongzhou being "willing" to take her as a concubine after death would've been enough. It legally and socially wipes away the wrongdoing he did. Everyone else considered that whole thing finished! But for Yingluo, her sister was her world, and she was willing to go so far and do so much because her sister was taken from her.
