it is heartbreaking how Ellie looks at him the whole scene of telling her about his scar. That is a deep, deep part of him and his history and his emotions. She is watching him talk about pulling the trigger, motioning his hand up to his head, how he flinched, everything. She looks at him and she’s picturing it. She’s picturing him, broken down and crying with a gun to his head. She sees him in Henry’s position. The change in his eyes to clarity. How Joel told her he “couldn’t have been more ready”. She is seeing this man who is so strong and who’s protected her at every turn and who’s been nothing but gentle to her this whole time in such a broken way, and it breaks her heart to think that it did happen. She’s not just thinking it as a what if, he was there. He reached that point. He fired.

“I’m glad that…that didn’t work out.” She wouldn’t have him if it did. She never would have met him. They never would’ve giggled over some stupid puns together, eaten chef boyardee together, talked about their sheep ranch on the moon, or hugged. She wouldn’t have the person she loves most in the world with her right now
