Characterization Through Language: Ventus (Kingdom Hearts)
Ven, Venny, Ventus, Ven Diagram—this is a character that has some interesting things going on. So what's he like in the Japanese dub?
For a fun start, here's a clip for JPN Ven:
WHY DID I BECOME SMALL?????
CV: Kouki Uchiyama (Toge Inumaki (Jujutsu Kaisen), Kei Tsukishima (Haikyuu!!), Izumi Miyamura (Horimiya), Razor (Genshin Impact))
And of course, Roxas.
Ventus cutscene vs Roxas cutscene
I believe Ven makes use of Uchiyama-san's higher tones more often than Roxas does. And Ven's voice is probably what you'd expect it to sound in the Japanese dub.
~~~
Ventus's preferred 1st Person pronoun ("I") is: "Ore" - 俺 (with an interesting exception)
This is just about what you'd expect from him. Other than being of the same age with similar dispositions, Ven and Sora (and Roxas) sharing similar speaking styles makes a lot of sense considering their connection. This also follows into how they use their "you" pronouns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("I'm Ventus, [calling me] Ven is fine.") (I'm Ventus, call me Ven")
("ore ha Ventus, Ven de iiyo.") ("ore Ventus, Ven te yonde")
He has quite a few ways of introducing himself so I wanted to share those two LOL.
Tumblr media
("We'll laugh together when we meet again.") (Ven uses "oretachi" (俺たち) which is "we")
However, there is a sequence of him using "boku" (僕) and that's in the beginning of BBS when his heart is shattered -> put back together because of Sora. (Sora's heart does this too and I FORGOT, I'm going to make a separate follow-up post with this I'M SO MAD AT MYSELF FOR FORGETTING THAT UNTIL NOW LOL)
Tumblr media
("This is my heart though")
I do wonder why this is the case. Maybe the damage kinda took him back to a state akin to a new heart? It's an interesting moment I feel.
Ventus's preferred 2nd Person pronoun ("You") is: "Kimi" - 君 and "Omae" - おまえ
These are also used similarily to Sora. He defaults to "kimi" with strangers/friends and goes to "omae" for enemies/antagonizing forces/creatures (aka Stitch)/same level people (not being really polite). He also has the same tendency to refer to people by their names (like Terra, Aqua, Herc, etc.) as Sora does.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
("I see, you're also alone—") (Again, is it okay if [I] become one with your heart?") (Eh, you're Sora?) (use of "kimi")
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("You! Why did [you] come here!") ("Your's too—") (Use of "omae")
~~~
Ven does/can switch his speaking style depending on who he's talking to. When speaking to someone who's clearly older of a higher status, he switches to "desu/masu" form, contrasting his usual plain style of speaking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("I'm looking for my friend.") ("Please stop master, my power is not good enough")
In these two cases, Ven says "desu" which is a standard polite/formal way of ending a sentence. Considering who he's talking to (Even and Xehanort), this makes sense. I think there are other characters who do this more extremely, but Ven is definitely aware of differences in social standings.
~~~
Clips:
"TERAAAAAAAA"
"Thank you for protecting me up until now, Sora"
"AQUAAAA"
"Connected hearts are my power!"
~~~
So basically, he, Sora, and Roxas aren't too far apart in terms of speaking habits. I do think Ven has an easier time switching to more formal forms when talking to others though.
As with the other cases, not too much is lost from the jump from one dub to another, so there isn't many huge discoveries. The "boku" thing is interesting to me but I'm not too sure what that would entail, especially since it's not like he spoke like that in the Union x era.
Either way, thank for reading!
Up next should be Roxas! Back to back Uchiyama-san!!!

Characterization Through Language: Roxas (Kingdom Hearts)
Roxas! He's a fan-favorite and there's some fun things in the Japanese dub for him.
Jaaaaan~
CV: Kouki Uchiyama (Glorio (Dragon Ball Daima), Tomura Shigaraki (Boku no Hero Academia), Rin Itoshi (BLUE LOCK))
("Yoro, you just want to show off the amount of roles he's had, huh?" Yes. Yes I do v-v)
And as you all know, Ventus.
The Ven post already showed off the difference between those two so I'll present something else. Uchiyama-san's voice dropped in the time between KH2 and Days (similarily to Sora between KH1 and Re:Com in English).
Roxas waking up in (KH2 intro scene):
KH2 vs Days
It's neat being able to see the same moment be captured with the change in his voice. A bit jarring, but makes for something really interesting!
~~~
Roxas's preferred 1st Person Pronoun: "Ore" - 俺
Just about what you'd expect as he came from Sora. As far as I know, I don't think he's had any occurence of using any other one.
Tumblr media
("It's not just our ----") (Use of 俺たち (oretachi) - We/Our)
Roxas's preferred 2nd Person Pronoun(s): "Kimi" - 君 / キミ and "Omae" - おまえ
Also similar to Sora, his usage of "you" pronouns is pretty much the use the same pattern. Stranger/friendly but not overly rude/casual gets "kimi" while antagonistic/very casual gets "omae". He also has a tendency to say names over "you" pronouns, notably with Axel and Xion (with an exception). He also has used "anta" (あんた) with DiZ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("Who are you!? (to Riku) (use of "omae")) vs ("Who are you?" (to Naminé) (use of "kimi"))
Tumblr media
("Who are you?)
(The phrasing is different here from the past examples. With Riku he says "omae ha dare da" while with Naminé it's "kimi ha dare". Here though the phrasing is "anta ha nani mono da". It's more polite kinda I feel, just barely though. He isn't speaking that politely to DiZ really.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("That guy suddenly attacked Xion" (speaking to Xion)) ("Does Axel have things [he/you] doesn't/don't want to lose?")
An interesting note is how he refers to Sora. As himself and Data-Roxas, he uses "omae". While Data-Sora uses "omae" with Data-Roxas due to what I've guessed from their antagonistic start, Sora uses "kimi with Roxas in 3D. It's interesting to me I hadn't been able to catch him using "you" pronouns for the Twilight Town gang (though I can imagine him using "omae" with them). Take this whole part as you will, whether it's the familiarity, the way he has viewed Sora, or just Roxas's own differing approaches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("You've forgotten everything so you don't feel anything, right?") ("Your heart is connected to many hearts.")
~~~
He's also a casual speaker. There aren't many times you catch him switching to desu/masu. Even when speaking to Xemnas, he speaks rather casually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("I'm not the robber.") (("I understand.) ("wakatta" is a shortened/informal version of "wakarimashita"))
Tumblr media
("Sorry--") (This is in desu/masu form "suimasendeshita")
~~~
Clips:
ANSWER ME
I don't know if there's a place I can go back to, but there is a place I'd like to go
Sora, that's why there's no point without you
I envy you...My summer vacation has...ended
~~~
Wow I spent a lot of time with Roxas here ToT
There's a huge chance I missed something even with all the watching and skimming. Roxas is quite the somber character and it really shows, alongside his connection to Sora with the way they speak.
I always find that small difference in the way Sora and Roxas refer to each other fascinating, goes to show how they're different.
This was fun, as always ^o^
Next on the block should be....Kairi or Axel/Lea! The order will probably be based on my mood LOL

Characterization Through Language: Riku (Kingdom Hearts)
Now onto 2nd place from the poll: Riku!
Considering how some characters are in a large range of how different they are across dubs, I find myself needing to adjust how I organize the content of each of these.
Riku's one of the ones that, as far as I've seen, isn't that different in ENG and JPN. As in, besides a few translation/localization changes to certain lines, I don't think you're missing out on anything huge in terms of speaking habits/quirks.
With that in mind, I'll still talk about his 1st/2nd person pronouns and go into my thoughts about the choices in his direction. There'll also be more trivia + links to voice clips I find fun/interesting!
Want a quick clip of JPN Riku to get an idea of how he sounds like?
Heh
CV: Mamoru Miyano (Light Yagami (Death Note), Ryuji Sakamoto (Persona 5), Mario (The Super Mario Bros. Movie), Osamu Dazai (Bungou Stray Dogs), Atsumu Miya (Haikyu!!), etc.)
("Yoro, did you put those roles specifically on purpose?" Yes. I need to emphasize how big his range is.)
If you've seen any other anime or game with Miyano-san voicing a character, you're probably familiar with how dynamic he is. Miyano-san has a very bright personality and can be very dramatic so the contrast between him and Riku is very amusing.
Obviously, Riku is a pretty cool guy, mostly reserved, though he has his moments.
~~~
So 1st and 2nd Person pronouns!
Riku's preferred 1st Person pronoun ("I") is: "Ore" - 俺
Which is no surprise by any means. Typically casual masculine pronoun, fitting for his personality as someone who's pretty confident and straightforward. As far as I've seen, I don't think he's had a moment where he's used a different one like Sora has.
Riku's preferred 2nd Person pronoun ("you") is: "Omae" - お前 / おまえ
BUT he does sometimes switch depending on who he's talking to. He's used あんた ("anta") with Naminé when he first met her and used both "omae" and "kimi" with Joshua. And if someone is of a higher position than him, he tends to switch as well (using "anata" with Terra, etc.).
Tumblr media
("Your memories are made from Sora's memories.")
~~~
When compared to Sora, I think Riku ends up radiating that cool older guy energy. He's "rough around the edges" enough to use "omae" with others more often but he's aware enough to switch to desu/masu form when needed (desu/masu form being standard politeness in general).
Tumblr media
("[I] was able to keep/fulfill your promise.")
(できました (dekimashita) is the past form of できます (dekimasu). If Riku were to speak casually here he would probably have said できった (dekitta). できる (dekiru) is the plain form for "dekimasu")
Miyano-san's voice has been relatively consistent throughout all the games, just becoming more refined as he gets older and has a better handle on his voice. He's able to capture Riku's coolness and occasional dramatic flair really well.
~~~
Some links to clips to actually hear him talk for a longer period of time:
KH1 Battle Voicelines
KH2 Post Xemnas Fight
Re:Mind Limit Cut
Riku Wakes Up And Gets Confused Over The Tea Party (3D)
Some screenshots from interviews:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be honest, I struggled a bit with this one mostly because I felt I didn't have as much to say in terms of anything "new" but I guess this shows that Riku is consistent in terms of portrayal across the dubs. There's a chance I've missed stuff too so there's that LOL
(Yes, I'm aware of some of the localization changes but the "You don't believe that" vs "Don't give up" thing is a lot more well-known lol)
I'm still figuring out what would be good formatting for these posts so any suggestions or like particular things you're curious about would be super helpful!
Thank you if you've made it to the end of this post!
Next one in this series will be the Xion! (She and MoM tied for 3rd so I'll do her's first. MoM is a doozy, I tell you ToT)
Characterization Through Language: Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
The poll ended up with Sora winning so here we are! In a way, it makes sense since he's the protagonist and considering that he's my favorite, I have no problems with that~
After Sora, I'm going to go in order of the poll results so Riku should be next.
Below, I'll give some general info about each character in JPN like their voice actor and then go into things like preferred 1st/2nd Person pronouns (or how they go about them in general). After that I'll add some of my own thoughts and interpretations for the character in question + how ENG might have made decisions based off of JPN/localization differences + maybe some fun trivia if I just so happen to have any.
This does include some notes about Vanitas and Data-Sora.
Of course, I might be missing stuff because watching everything from all the games is way too much workload, so if anyone finds any mistakes or has anything to add, feel free to lmk.
Also very long post ahead! (With screenshots!)
CV: Miyu Irino (Haku (Spirited Away), Koushi Sugawara (Haikyuu), Todomatsu Matsuno (Osomatsu-san), Cyno (Genshin Impact), etc.)
Of course, he voices Vanitas as well. The difference is really interesting. Right below are links to videos for their voicelines in battle and you can see the stark difference in tone/direction Irino-san takes them, especially with the lines where they're saying the same thing.
Sora
Vanitas
(They're linked to the specific time I want to share)
Sora makes use of his upper/normal range, especially in battle, while Vanitas uses his normal/lower range. If you aren't familiar with the JPN dub, that should give you some idea of how Sora (+ Vanitas) sound.
~~~
Now onto notable preferences/habits Sora has when he speaks:
I've mentioned this in other posts but I have some newer insights.
Sora's preferred 1st Person pronoun ("I") is: "Ore" - 俺
(Though there is one case of him using "boku" (僕) with Kairi in KH1. "Boku" is a more...humble but still a usually casual masculine "I" pronoun)
This is a really casual, usually masculine pronoun. If you hear a male character use "ore" then they're usually really confident and/or casual, though that's in the most typical sense. If you consume Japanese media, you've definitely heard this one before.
Of course, this is fitting for Sora. His whole thing is being a normal teenage boy, easily excitable and very friendly.
Sora's preferred 2nd Person Pronoun ("you") is: "Kimi" - 君 / キミ BUT, and huge but, there's more layers to this than past me knew fully
I've usually seen him go with "kimi" in most cases but throughout the series, he tends to switch depending on who he's talking to.
With the way Japanese works, "you" pronouns can often be omitted in conversation since context makes things easily understood. Also, you might hear people or characters saying someone's name more often than in English which can be a matter of formality (I've brought this up in an earlier post) or otherwise.
Sora often says the names of his friends, like he usually refers to Donald and Goofy by name from what I've seen, but there's some interesting notes.
If he just so happens to say "you" to Riku then it's "omae"
But he also uses "omae" with people who antagonize him or those on a level "below" like he does with Pluto in KH1
Tumblr media
(This is also a thing in Japanese, a formality type thing, where your superior can speak to you casually but not vice versa. Your boss can call you casually but not the other way around. An in-universe example is how MoM uses "omae" Ava and Gula as they're the youngest of the foretellers)
In Riku's case, it's a show of how close they are and the sort of dynamic they have. Sora doesn't seem to use "omae" with others but Riku is his childhood friend. They're best friends and rivals, and the use of "omae" on both of their sides is a show of that wavelength they share.
If it's people like Kairi, Naminé, most others then "kimi" is used. "Kimi" is considered more polite than "omae" but still pretty casual and somewhat associated with masculine pronouns from what I've seen. Sora seems to use this with strangers he hadn't been antagonized by, friends that aren't Riku, etc.
Interestingly, in Coded, Data-Sora uses "omae" with Data-Roxas which is a given since Data-Roxas was pretty much an antagonizing stranger to him from the get-go. However, in Dream Drop, Sora uses "kimi" with Roxas. In a way, I think this shows the variation between Sora and Data-Sora as individuals in terms of their experiences.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(You could also say the same with Roxas, but I'll save that for his own post)
This is a rarer one compared to his use of "kimi" and "omae" but he has used "anta" (あんた), which is a shortened form of "anata" (あなた) (a more formal "you" than the previous ones mentioned), when he firsts meets Ansem in the beginning of KH1.
Tumblr media
A characters 1st/2nd pronoun usage is always interesting to me because it says a lot about a character based on what they choose to use and if they choose to switch depending on who they're talking to.
Sora switches his "you" pronouns which does show awareness over some social standards though he doesn't actually change how he speaks overall (he's speaks casually from the get-go). Oftentimes with characters, they might not switch no matter who they're talking to. It gives a lot of insight on how they view things like formalities and/or social norms. I just think this is an interesting aspect to take note of.
~~~
Sora is pretty straightforward in JPN, as in, if you're more familiar with ENG and were asked to imagine his voice in JPN, you probably wouldn't be that far off from the truth. Haley Joel Osment and Miyu Irino, especially in earlier games were pretty similar in terms of pitch, tone, and vibes for Sora, though HJO has a much more apparent voice drop. HJO does have a pretty big jump from 2 to 3, though I think he still portrays Sora really well.
Miyu Irino has been mostly consistent with Sora's voice, to the point many think his voice hasn't really changed at all (between 2 and 3 but I've even seen people go as far as 1. In reality, I believe there's definitely a notable difference from 1 for sure).
Sora doesn't have extremely quirky/out there speaking habits. As said before, he's pretty much a normal casual teen boy. Irino-san uses a very energetic vibe with him. He also adds a whine to his voice sometimes which is really cute LOL
I do think there's a big difference between his usual/energetic pitches and when he's being serious. The dichotomy of Sora's childish whimsy versus his maturity (both natural and forced haha...ha...)
Even so, I think there's still a lot of cool finds that can't be found in ENG, even if it's small things like a difference in tone for a sentence.
~~~
I've brought this up in a post a long time ago, but I think some of the way lines end up sounding in ENG, the awkward sounding/phrased ones, are due fundamental difference between English and Japanese. This is notable with Sora, hence why I'll bring it it up with him, but Japanese has a lot of different sounds + the way grammar structure forms sentences. Hence why scenes like the conversation between Sora and Ven with Vanitas end up the way they are in ENG (look at this post I have for translating this scene for context).
~~~
Fun Trivia or Things I Want to Share:
I've recc'd it before but you have to hear Sora ask for a Baymax in JPN! This time I'll link it to the exact moment:
"Just one! Just one!" (Considering all the voices talking, he might be a bit hard to hear lol)
If you've ever been curious about Miyu Irino's perspective on Sora and voicing him: (From misc. interviews)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Note: Miyano is Mamoru Miyano who voices Riku and Uchida is Risa Uchida who voices Kairi)
I'm sorry if this is messy and that there could've been more to talk about. Maybe in the future, I'll make an addendum for Sora for additions and/or corrections. I hope there was something cool to learn for anyone reading this post!
And if anyone needs sources for any of the stuff I put, just lmk and I can share it!
Characterization Through Language: Xion (Kingdom Hearts)
Next from the poll: Xion!
(She technically tied with MoM but I put her first because MoM...he's something...and I feel like I'll have a little too much to say about him)
Xion has a lot of fascinating aspects to her that kinda get lost in the translation/localization sauce, one of the biggest ones I've posted about before so I'll just TLDR it here while linking that post. And just like the previous posts there'll be analyses and trivia ^o^
CV: Risa Uchida (Emika (Lupin the 3rd: Goodbye Partner); She mostly focuses on acting/theatre actually so she doesn't have as many voice acting roles)
And of course, she's Kairi's seiyuu as well.
Here's the two saying the same line:
"Don't hold back, Axel." vs "Don't hold back, Lea."
Uchida-san has such a pretty voice, it's very princess-like. That's one consistent thing I've heard from people hearing her voice for the first time.
~~~
Xion's preferred 1st Person pronoun ("I") is: "Atashi" - あたし
This previous post goes into it in more detail but there's a lot of significance in her usage of this particular pronoun.
"あたし" is the typically feminine way of referring to one's self as comapred to 私 (わたし)/"Watashi" which is gender-neutral and the standard "I" that people can use in conversation. It's basically the go-to for standard politeness in Japanese.
In short, this is extremely important for Xion's characterization because it's a pronoun that none of the other characters she's based on use it. Kairi uses "watashi" (and so does Naminé). This makes "atashi" a Xion thing. She's a girl, she's her own person and her name is Xion—not a boy named Sora.
Tumblr media
("Roxas also doesn't have memories, like me.")
Xion's preferred 2nd Person pronoun ("you") is: "Anata" - あなた
This is a standard way to say "you', probably one of the most polite ways to do so. Honestly, I don't have much to say here lol
Tumblr media
("You, as well. Why are you pretending to be [in the] Organization?")
~~~
Xion has a soft but firm voice, emphasis on the firmness. I think the best way to put it is to show how voicing Xion versus Kairi is for Uchida-san:
Tumblr media
I think she tends to make use Uchida-san's darker/deeper tones, at least more than Kairi. Considering the time we get with her throughout Days + 3, there were a quite a bit of moments that stuck out to me. I don't have too much to say, but Xion's quite an emotional performance.
~~~
Notable Clips:
Xion screaming (Riku encounter)
That one convo with Axel (The softness of her voice usually)
After beating Xigbar (Her voice being more firm)
Right before her boss fight (The epitome of the climax of her making up her mind TvT)
Screenshot from an Interview:
Tumblr media
(KH3 Ultimania)
Not gonna lie, there's a part of me that wishes I didn't make that previous post just so I could've written more here LOL
Either way, Xion's another case of relative consistency. Besides the "atashi" aspect, you don't really lose out on the characterization I feel. Kingdom Hearts is relatively consistent on that basis. I always find it fun studying characters with the same voice actor cause you can usually find those cool nuances based on the direction.
So, that's all I have for this post so thanks if you made here!
Next is the Master of Masters, and this time, there's A Lot to talk about with him in terms of how his dialogue and personality come through in the Japanese dub.

Characterization Through Language: Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)
Our dear Princess of Heart! Nothing but love for our girl v-v
For the starter clip it'll be this:
Kairi and Not Forgiving Xehanort
CV: Risa Uchida (Emika (Lupin the 3rd: Goodbye Partner); She mostly focuses on acting/theatre actually so she doesn't have as many voice acting roles) (As noted in Xion's post)
I've already said this before but Uchida-san has an extremely pretty and princess-like voice. I also love the subtle differences in how she approaches Kairi and Xion. I'd use a different example than the one on Xion's post but I love the comparison of the "Don't hold back" line some much that, if this is the first post you're interacting with for this series, I'd love to share this:
"Don't hold back, Axel" vs "Don't hold back, Lea"
~~~
Kairi's preferred 1st Person Pronoun: "Watashi" - 私 / わたし
Kairi's preferred 2nd Person Pronoun: "Anata" - あなた and "Kimi" - 君*
I'm putting them together like this since I have a screenshot that has her using both watashi and anata in the same sentence.
Tumblr media
("I won't forgive you.")
Tumblr media
("Eh, you know Sora?")
This is all pretty standard ways of speaking so there isn't much to note here. Though, it does make an interesting difference with Xion who uses a different "I" pronoun, as talked about in this post. From what I've seen, she doesn't really switch from those
*Interesting is her use of "kimi"
Tumblr media
This is her referring to Sora in her letter. I think this goes to show her familiarity with him. And I haven't found it or there hasn't been a case but I feel like she'd use it Riku, but most cases have her saying his name in a similar way Sora does.
As a result, I haven't seen her use "kimi" as much.
~~~
In general, her speakng style is more formal / not as "casual" as Sora or Riku but she does speak casually. And she's definitely one to switch depending on who she's talking to.
Tumblr media
(Since she's speaking to Lea here, she uses だよね (dayo ne) instead of ですね (desu ne), hence showing her familiarity with him.)
She actually uses "desu/masu" form in her letter to Sora. Which I feel is probably a standard thing to do when writing letters.
Tumblr media
("Knowing that Lea has a best friend he wants to save, I can't help but think he's someone you can't hate") (思ってます - "I think"; notice the ます (masu))
Tumblr media
("Nice to meet you, I'm Kairi.") (use of masu here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("But you also saved me, thank you so much.") (desu and masu used here)
Definitely among the trio, she's the most polite, I feel. Pretty fitting with how she was raised, methinks?
~~~
Clips:
Her distressed "Eeeeh?" when learning who Lea was
Her first appearance
Bits from her battle with Xehanort in Re:Mind
Kairi and Riku shared "Eh": 1 / 2
~~~
Doing this really made me want to see Kairi in different scenarios and study how she'd inteact with more characters. I'm begging, praying for more Kairi content in the future! Also I really want to see more scenes with her and Riku together, the shared "Eh"s and reactions are cute LOL
Up next is: Axel / Lea!!! He's definitely an interesting character to study, and his post will be very special v-v

I want to start a series of posts where I look into KH's characters in the Japanese dub and find things that can't be/weren't expressed in English (ie preferences in 1st and 2nd person pronouns, any verbal quirks, etc.). Pretty much a study of characterization through language.
I've made posts that have brought up some of these things before but I thought to organize these sorts of things by character per post. Depending on how this goes I might go in order starting from most for the choices after the winning one.

So I did a poll for the order in which I do the Foretellers and got the order, but before getting to them, I want to see if people would want me to do the old masters first. They do have some interesting aspects to them spanning from Dark Road to BBS to KH3 I feel.
Or we can have fun and spin a wheel to decide LOL
Of course, I'll get through the list from the original poll first. If the Foretellers win, I'll go in the order of those poll results then get to Eraqus and Xehanort, then go from there.
I'm having a lot of fun doing this series so I'll be happy no matter who wins LOL
Also if anyone has specific requests/suggestions, let me know ^o^ I could make a proper poll for those options!

Hi friend!
Had a question about your post on Ventus.
Perhaps you’ve talked about it before but in what context is boku used? You didn’t touch on it too much in your post so I was curious. If you covered it someplace else feel free to point me there. Or if you’re going to cover it more with Sora’s follow up post, that’s okay too.
Hi! Thank you for the ask!
I don't think I've really went into detail about it in this series actually, mostly in passing. "Boku" (僕) is the casual but relatively more polite masculine "I" pronoun compared to "ore" so "boku" is something you'd see more used among the Disney characters (Donald, Goofy, Peter Pan, etc.) or characters like Pence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Goofy: "[This] is also gibberish to me.") ("Ah, [it was] me. Pence is speaking. I'm operating the computer.)
Usually "boku" doesn't have as much of a specific reason to be used as it's common like "watashi" and "ore" but in the context of Sora and Ventus in the beginning of BBS, it leaves some food for thought. That's something I'll probably go into more detail in that Sora follow-up post.
Hopefully that answered your question, feel free to comment or send another ask for any clarification or any other questions you have!

The Characterization Through Language series is a collection of posts that explore Kingdom Hearts's characters through the Japanese dub, whether that be how they refer to themselves and others, things that weren't carried over into the English dub for one reason or another, and any fun trivia I come across.
I still haven't gotten through everyone in the previous poll, though I might make another one to redetermine/update the order to go in.
In the wake of the MoM post, I realized that I wanted to cover the Foretellers as well lol

Hi! Welcome to my blog! I realized that at some point I should probably start organizing my posts, especially the stuff related to translations and localization. I hope this makes things easier to navigate for anyone looking!
Things to know:
I take requests for translating KH scenes! I'm not fluent, but I am currently studying and will do my best to give an accurate translation
I don't have a consistent post schedule. I post whenever I have an idea or something in mind since I'm awful at consistency
