One of my favorite things is when a character replies with something like "Tch" while smiling or in a more general sense, character says something ominous while looking the most wholesome

Mirroring tool my hero ToT, making the eyes more even + a bit more consistent to my style. Sora's looked really different across a lot of my pieces this year so I'm hoping I'll be more consistent (yoroshiu has said this 100x already).

But yeah, this time, I'm curious about what resonated with players in terms of themes! For me, all of these resonated with me but I think what really got me the most was "Connections" and "how we're shaped by our experiences."

I also want to see what other things people might've gotten out of it.

I'd been struggling with art for like weeks, maybe a month or two at this point, so I hadn't been happy with much I was drawing, particularly on digital. Recently though, I've decided to push for experimenting and trying different brushes and art style studies and maybe have found something again? Though, once again, my style is inconsistent ToT I really like this pencil brush due to its "texture" a lot so I'll start using it more often. Also I've been observing more coloring styles I want to try. Art a struggle TvT

Also yeah, I got lazy with the text box, I couldn't bring myself to make it even.......

What's it like?

That you open your eyes and not know until later that you have pieces of you running around. Or maybe you do know, and that's what you intended.

To know that you can shatter like glass. To understand that you can dissipate as if you weren't there at all.

That you are made of chains of events that might not even be yours. That you can melt into the ground like a shadow.

Or maybe you're the shard that's living the day-to-day and you knew none the wiser. Or you did know, but it didn't mean much.

What's it like, knowing how fragile you are?

Sora's responses to Pete when talking about Maleficent: (In Japanese since I was curious about it)

"Maleficent...huh?" (he sounds so mischevious and cheeky ToT) (gives the energy of saying "Maleficent...you say?")

"[She's] not here~" (lit. not here; he really sounds so smug ToT)

"Well...we might've gotten in the way a little~"

It's mostly the last line that's the most different from English, but the energy is the same ToT

Sora really phrased it as "oh, we just got in the way a littleeee" it's the fact he said ちょっと (chotto) (a little) that's getting me ToT like broooo

Also the fact he phrases it as "getting in the way" or "being a hindrance/nuisance" hellppppp

But yeah overall, very consistent across dubs. We love devious Sora LOL

This is just going to be me rambling/gushing over translation/localization stuff. This is such a small and insignificant thing but I find this really fun

"You know...it's painful"

In the English dub, the line goes as:

and it just made me think about the different possible word choices translators/localizers have and what they end up going for.

I specifically thought about this aspect because hearing this line reminded me of Riku's in Days when talking to Xion.

In English he says:

In Japanese, it's this:

"No, [I'm] just...sad"

(The dubs are really close to each other in these cases as you can see LOL)

Both scenes use the same word "sad" in English. But in Japanese, they use different terms. Sora says 「切ない」 (setsunai) which means "painful" or "oppressive/suffocating". The kanji 切 (setsu) on its own is "cut/cut off", hence 切ない seems to literally sound like "not cut off" (<-this latter part is an assumption) (so like a pain/feeling that isn't cut off/removed). The feeling is painful in an oppressive way for Sora. (I've read that this word is a term that isn't the easiest to directly translate apparently? It's a rather subtle word supposedly.)

For Riku, he uses the word 「悲しい」 (kanashii) which is the word used for "sad/sadness". This is the word I usually hear being used when people say they're sad.

It's not a big deal because they're essentially saying the same things but I think it's fun thinking how they go about choosing which one would work best (get the meaning across + sound most natural). Sora saying "You know...I'm sad" might've sounded more natural for him in the eyes of the translators/localizers rather than something like "painful" or "hurts". Like maybe those words were a bit too strong to equate to the quiet/subtle melancholy Sora's expressing (it's not his own pain but someone else's) here. I might be overthinking it but it's really fun!

It's kinda like how in Coded, the English dub chose to specifically use the word "hurt" while the Japanese dub used 「痛み」 (itami) "pain". I wonder if in that case, they just went with "hurt" it make it more distinctive or just because it does technically means "hurt/to hurt". We can use "hurt" as a noun but it's not as common as "pain" in that sense, hence why the response I've seen from the western side of the fandom was what it was. Especially since it was consistent and they didn't swtch between "hurt" and "pain" (for consistency I imagine).

Anyway, I'm just rambling about this rather small line and there's definitely more and bigger examples of this thing, but I thought it's cool seeing it in small ways too? I appreciate this aspect of games and media in general TvT

Death feels like being enveloped by darkness.

Well, duh, of course it does because that's what killed him, Sora thinks to himself.

He's not exactly dead-dead, but he pretty much is—barely holding on, and barely being held together. A last hope, a last ditch effort to do something about this, honestly, one-sided battle they got themselves into. Sora scoffs at the reality that all that preparation got them nothing. He comes into contact with one of his...clones? Doubles? Pieces. One of his pieces. He feels something he can't entirely describe, an echo of ocean water wrapping around his feet? Familiar.

Maybe death feels like being shoddily taped together.

Or was that the state of limbo he was in? How did Chirithy say it? Something like, the lines between death and sleep being close and how they can't help but cross over? He catches another piece of himself and he's reminded of a flower his dad told him about back home.

Death feels like loss.

Of course it does because that's what it is. The loss of life, the absolute loss of memory, loss, loss, loss. He repeats the word while he catches more of himself (trees, toys, the first harpoon he was gifted—many small things). The word stops having meaning by the time he's at thirty-five. It stops sounding real by the time he's at fourty-six. He catches three pieces eating ice cream together and he isn't sure whether he should laugh or let himself be a little bitter.

Death feels like ice.

Since bodies get cold, Sora thinks sardonically. He breathes the heaviest sigh he's allowed himself in a while. It's okay since no one else is around. He jumps from the platform and ruins the circle of happy pieces mindlessly dancing by having each one run into him. Hanging out with friends across the worlds, the songs, the games, the food, the lanterns, and the fights. Ironically, he feels more tired.

Death feels like...no...is sleep.

And Sora now has gone full circle. And he can't afford to sleep. No rest. He's the only one who can do this. By the time he reaches where he needs to be, he takes one last look around and sees other pieces walking, skipping, running around. But he doesn't have time. And besides, he has enough of himself already. Losing some extra pieces should be okay.

As he goes back, letting himself be enveloped in warm light, he thinks off-handedly.

Death feels familiar.

Not because of the sleeping aspect but...something else he can't name. Though, what does it matter?

He has to move on, as always.

It's funny that my mind doesn't register low poly Norts LOL like I have a harder time registering that they have low poly face models apparently ToT

(My Terra bias might come out and make a post comparing the different models (Pre and KH3) of Terra, Xehanort, and Xemnas for a future day lol)

"I'm me." / "That's me." FUTURE EDIT: My letter/character confusion finally caught me and I mistook あ (a) for お (o). Hence Repliku saying あれ (are) which means "that" instead of おれ (ore) which is "I/me". So HAHA how embrassing (I want to cry). It's still something that the lines are really close (and in hindsight, I should've noticed that something was off since Repliku is referring to Dark Riku so it wouldn't be phrased like "I'm me") in terms of structure but that's because, well, how else is he gonna say it. I'd be reaching if I went into potential callback line territory, though KH in the JPN dub especially loves the callback lines. I'm keeping what I originally wrote down there since like...deleting it and just adding this alone would be...you know? But just know that everything below is speculation and theorizing on me misreading the line so yeah. It's more of a record that I made a mistake originally, I won't even try to hide it. You can ignore the below stuff pretty much lol

Riku and Repliku getting to say the line TvT

In Repliku's the subtitles has it written as おれは俺だ where ore is written in both hiragana and kanji while Riku has both ores in kanji.

I have a few thoughts as to why that might be, like how Repliku, who believes himself to be a Riku, is saying he is Riku. おれ as in Repliku and 俺 as in Riku ("I'm me" and "I'm you" in a really specific way ToT). Which WOW that...that leaves so much food for thought, but I'll leave it at that for now. But also, I coulf be overthinking it ehe~

I need to look at more of Repliku's lines in JPN throughout the series to support anything I'm yapping about because I now have some theories and guesses ToT Just take this as rambling.

This is kinda another callback line that isn't translated into English I believe which also follows the "Take care of her" line that also isn't shown in English as a callback despite JPN doing so. RIP Repliku and Riku on two counts here ToT

Wait that's so cool! The answer went deeper than I thought and I'm glad I asked!! I didn't get taught simplified radicals in my Japanese classes and it's probably because of its unofficial status, so this was really fascinating to learn.

That now makes me wonder if there was a deeper purpose in having the font be made like. Especially with all the story/narrative theme-ing/motifs that surround KH.

Thank you for looking into it! I feel like I'm now going to have some brainrot over this whole font thing but fore lore reasons ToT

When I look at Kingdom Hearts in Japanese, the kanji that have the 門 radical like 聞 and 関 tend to be written differently and it really caught me off guard

I'd probably have to look at more games in Japanese text but yeah, I was curious about this. I have a few ideas as to why it'd be written as such but they're all just guesses. Much help with be greatly appreciated ^o^

Aaaaaah that makes sense, I should've just thought about it like that in the first place (or more I should've read properly ToT). In the moment, I wasn't even sure where to begin but in hindsight, it was really simple LOL

That + the reblog with the guess about the space due to size and readability makes a pretty sound explanation (one of my guesses was something like that, like due to how much harder it'd be to read due to how small the middle radicals would be)

Some kanji are a little hard to read so them choosing a simplified form makes sense, and I imagine they kept it for the italicized parts for the sake of consistency?
