or: 13 reasons why :re is fucking terrible not clickbait

Disclaimer: I think no matter how long this post gets I’m missing something, so let’s just outline the worst ones. And I mean to be transparent, the only reason I actually read :re was so I could make this post... (and bc i wanted to see the what, five panels of hide) Well, I couldn’t stand hating it without evidence beyond hearsay and General Vibes. But I knew it was gonna be bad, I knew it was going to ruin me jesus christ. Obviously I’m not hating on people that like it, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with genuinely enjoying it (I do genuinely enjoy parts of it, and by parts i mean chapters 1-50 with exceptions and 75) I think it’s wonderful if you can derive joy from it (lmao) but I can say that through my lens in life, there’s so much fucking wrong with this goddamn fucking piece of shit manga and I feel the need to yell about it because i am ✨autism✨ so let’s get going (this is r e a l l y long just a warning)

tl;dr Ishida stay in your fucking lane

1. Transphobia and Homophobia:

alright here we are first off with the big one and if I had to choose, one of Ishida’s greatest sins here. It’s quite unusual in mangas like these to have any sort of representation for such things in and of itself, and yeah of course that annoys me, but having no represntation at all is like so much better than getting actively harmful representation. Most manga that aren’t specifically about those things shy away from those topics, and it’s tiring but it’s normal. You wouldn’t want a mangaka to try to write about something like that without experience or informed opinions. So I say if you can’t write something correct, just don’t write something like that in at all. Ishida clearly,,, does not get this.

And it’s not just the case of Mutsuki, who, well, gets it bad enough, there are three full fucking trans characters Ishida made like, just to shit on.

Big Madame- god, made like that specifically to perpetuate the predatory trans woman trope jesus christ is Ishida friends with JK fuckface Rowling. Ah yes the ugly, human trafficking, predatory, pedophilic killer that tried to make their male child more feminine? Has a dick. Really? Could you be a single bit more transparent about your fucking agenda here? I really don’t have to say much here.

Kanae von Fuckwald- Technically Ishida says here that basically this bitch was just like??? Pretending to be a guy for years just to what?? I don’t even know?? Get together with Tsukiyama? Cause he’s fucking gay or something? I don’t even get it but like i read this post yesterday and that’s a whole ass thermian argument. It’s like “oh well this is fine because well this person’s not actually trans and therefore the representation thing doesn’t apply”... it’s useless. You created the character that way and you made it intentionally to for whatever way promote this idea that people would “pretend” to be a different gender and that eventually they’ll realize that it’s a “lie” and they never really wanted it. This is what you’re saying about the real people who are,,, actually trans? Jesus christ. Also thinking that a twink like that would be trans? God yeah trans guys can be feminine but buddy that’s clearly not what you’re going for here.

And of course, Mutsuki- There’s just... so much wrong here. I mean like. Before we even get into anything about his character and what they did to him let me just discuss his entire design. Buddy like if you had to choose one person in that show to be trans that’s the least likely one. Ah yes, the feminine one. With the androgynous haircut and the shy disposition and the physical weakness compared to the others. God that’s like, a fujoshi’s take on ao3 of what character should be trans. As much as yeah of course, trans guys can be feminine, they are in no way obligated to be such and you shouldn’t make them more so to be more “believably” so. Ask any actual trans person ever. A character like that is just perpetuating the notion of trans guys being inherently more feminine or trying to pretend to be otherwise.ThEn, of course, there’s the ridiculous sexualization, infantilization and fetishization of this character, going through a thousand plot hurdles to make him constantly stripped, put in girls clothing, chased by perverts, assaulted, ET FUCKING CETERA. Give him a fUCKING BREAK. Creating this character the way he’s portrayed in canon (including so called backstory of murdering parents because of sexual and physical abuse) is perpetuating a notion that someone would be a trans guy because of internalized misogyny and/or trauma instead of because they’re just... a guy. It’s just it’s just it’s just Really bad. Plus taking his character, demonizing him and making him like, supposedly love haise (which i Really hate for a thousand reasons, god that’s like, a parent and child type relationship they have there not romantic,,, god,,,) try to like fucking murder touka and stop seeing sense, and then just... return him to being infantalized. God. Jesus christ fucking goddamn it I love Mutsuki and he deserves better.

Oh yeah and then the homophobia, this one’s smaller because... most of the trans people are here to go “it’s gay... wait it’s not Really gay so it’s ok” but I would like to leave a small note here for all the gay characters who got thrown under the bus not just in re but in the original, like, you know, Nico and shit? I really do not know shit about Nico but all the things about Jason? God if I had a thing for one person that you shouldn’t try to portray as representation it’s Jason. IDK what’s up with him and Naki but god it wasn’t healthy. (i’d like to say here that i love naki and i think naki deserves the world but honey there are better heroes than yamori) Anyway yeah I think that’s also bullshit and Ishida should stay in his fucking lane. (or her i guess, i just feel like it’s probably a guy bc of just... so much sexism)

Ok, now that we have the big one out of the way-

2. The mishandling of portrayals of various mental illnesses:

I’m not an expert on this one like I can say about the gays TM but just like in general, the whole manga’s very messy and portrays a lot of gritty stuff, and Ishida clearly attempts to throw in some mental illness for fun, but god fUcking damn it they’re bad. I couldn’t really even give you examples bc it’s pretty widespread and i’m stupid, but it was really like trump throwing paper towels “and you get a demonization, and you get an infantalization, and you get a butchered character, and you get a fetishization-”

3. Ishida having no fucking clue how science works

This particular factoid led me to have a very hard time reading this manga because it went from being about like, yknow, torture and fights and crying and stuff to weird experimentation bullshit and mutated whatever and everyone’s a hybrid now I guess. When I heard this thing about the quinxes, I thought that made no sense, because I was like “yeah but wait,,, how tf does that work didn’t Ishida say earlier that kagune literally were fueled by human meat isn’t that like the entire point the ccg is against?” and then Ishida’s explanation of how they’re not just exactly like Kaneki is that “oh yeah well there’s like, metal around it, so it’s different.” OH YEAH OK THAT MAKES PERFECT SENSE NOW, THANKS.

The thing is... there’s no way of actually regulating that. You couldn’t move a kagune unless it was attached to your cells, and if it’s attached man, it’s attached and it’s part of you. Also yelling “frame two” won’t like make it any bigger lmao, either you’re gonna have it based on theoretical science in this universe or you’re going to have a dumb supernatural magic pokemon fight deal. The whole thing makes no sense. The science issue isn’t just about this either, it’s also about how the entire thing basically undermines the point of the whole story. When you blur the lines between human and ghoul with little to no real rules or basis in real science, every rule kind of just becomes cheap plot convenience.

So the Quinxes can eat human food unless they use their kagune too much, alright, but Kaneki couldn’t eat human food before he’d even ever used his though the only difference between their bodies was this,,, theoretical metal thing?? And Haise... was never really covered, before he went black hair emo bastard and like vored Eto, did he eat human food like the rest of the CCG? He certainly cooked it. And the squad that lived with him wasn’t aware he was a ghoul until he pulled out the kagune. So I’d assume so, but then how could he have a kagune, how could he survive when his body still was like that?

Is it the RC suppressents? Then couldn’t he just have taken those and lived as a human the entire time? Is that all he fucking needed, is that the only difference between human and ghoul? It doesn’t make sense and the rules are bent so much they don’t function anymore. Ishida like write down your rules somewhere even if they’re bullshit, they shouldn’t contradict each other.

Damn man I’m not even going to go into the dumbass rules of the half humans or the special fast aging thing or the fucking,,, folded up cells deal,,, or the Imagination Kagune, or the fucking,,, Dragon, or the zombie ghoul apocalypse or the “whole new species made of just kagune” i don’t even have the time it is fucking ridiculous and I can’t even with it. Physics. Laws of physics. If not biology, at least follow physics Ishida??? Please???? And if you’re not you need to do that consistently??

4. character glow ups actually being character glow downs

(with the exception of nishiki, he baby now, and akira, i think her development was valid af)

God, this one gets me every time. Touka was cool. Touka was fucking badass, she had a complex character with many motivations and wants, and in the original having her eventually kind of soften bc of Kaneki is valid. But taking her and turning her into like literally nothing but Pretty Housewife Yearning For Husband At War? God, kill me. She’s a strong person. She can like Kaneki without the guy being her only character trait. Also uh, Touka and Kaneki being a couple was valid before this change, now I honestly can’t stomach it. Like they were the kind of “both bisexual” m/f couple that we stan. No longer I guess.

She’s the most egregious example, but I’d also like to point out Juuzou, not everything they changed about him is bad, honestly we fucking stan his knife legs, but he’s kind of like a rip off L now? You got rid of his ~unhinged~, we do not stan. I’m on the fence about him bc i think that kind of is a valid transition to adulthood and I guess he’s grown up, but again, why change his fucking hair color? What is the explanation for this?

Also Hinami. I mean, I don’t really care about her a lot in general, but it’s weird to see her as like an adult when Ayato emo boy looks like exactly the fucking same and they’re like,,, supposedly the same age.

There are definitely more I’m missing here. Honestly, Hide was valid. God him with his fucking burlap sack. With a fucking lenny face on it. I can’t with him. That’s so Hide. But there were some bad ones.

5. one hair color change was my limit, enough said

6. Showing me great new characters and then promptly ruining them

And you can tell this one’s about quinx squad, my favorite bastard children. God, I love them. They’re the only good things about Re other than Hide and Haise and like everything else, Ishida took them and went “what if i *guts*” god why. I love these kids with all my heart. Why. Why. Why did you do that to Mutsuki. Why as soon as Haise isn’t in the room they all get themselves tangled up with pedos. Why they gotta break up the squad. Why make all of them lose all the wholesomeness and lessons they learned from Haise. Why do you ruin them all with weird unreciprocated random crushes on each other when they’re like basically siblings. Why fuckinG KILL SHIRAZU HE IS THE APPOINTED CHIEF DUMBASS OF THE SQUAD WHY HIM. WHY. WITH SO LITTLE IMPACT. YOU COULD FUCKING MISS IT SO EASILY. THAT’S NOT RIGHT. AND KANEKI JUST FUCKING ABANDONS THEM BC HE HAS HIS MEMORIES AGAIN N O ? NO ACTUALLY NO.

7. the casual racism and sexism :)

i just :) can you stop having girls constantly bring themselves down for being female :) and making them be oversexualized, less full characters :) always in some way connected to a guy :) more weak and hurt more often :) my fucking god :) also yeah it’s way less prevalent but there were a few racist caricatures thrown in there for taste if you don’t know how to draw lips just don’t

8. Ishida being too much of a pissbaby for a real death scene

Basically: undermining the impact of “deaths” fom the first series while also randomly and badly killing off new characters. Oh that character that died in the original in a really cinematic way that made you cry and think about the meaning of life and how beautifully tragic this story was? Oh lol they’re not Actually dead. (x10) Doing that with Hide (at least in the manga, not the anime, god root A really did it with him but we’re not talking about that) was valid, seeing as I love him your honor and in the manga one of the lessons that his character hinges on was like in chapter 75 to live on instead of giving up even if it hurts and all that... (this is obviously kind of the opposite from root A where his character was like more about sacrificing for kaneki since kaneki had already done so much, i think both are valid but we’re Talking About The Manga) he was done well. That was right (even though i think they should have done More of it) but there were so many characters this kind of thing was done to without the proper adjustment in the handling of the messages given here.

Like with Koma and Irimi, who,,, honestly should have stayed dead because their entire character arc kinda ended there and showed how they were sorry for their actions and this was how they were making it up. And then they just like... come back. And fight more. Really? This wasn’t the only instance either, same deal with Shinohara (though him coming back made me cry) it like, kind of undermines it if you’re going to have Juuzou derive his character development from that. Either Juuzou gets to keep his unhinged and his dad, or he loses his dad for real and he also grows up. God guys choose. What’s the message you’re playing here. (at least they kept Yoshimura dead, his death made me cry and I would have stabbed something if it wasn’t real, probably Ishida.) And even with Kaneki himself, god, if he can’t die from being stabbed straight through the fucking eye, what COULD kill him? It really diminishes the anxiety you feel about “omg is this person gonna die i want them to be ok” if they basically evade the laws of physics and their own previous character arcs 70 times. I’m definitely forgetting more of the same, Ishida can’t write a good death, he needed the anime writers to do it for him.

9. Kaneki. Just. Kaneki.

God they fucking butchered this man. I could go on about his character is weird and confusing in the manga from the beginning, but we’re focusing on mostly all his weird :re character development, the bad handling of Haise and his memories, and all his iterations.

Before I read :re, what I could glean from fanart and the occasional fic that wasn’t tagged properly was really confusing and kind of a mixed bag. I knew Haise was Kaneki but without his memories, now in the ccg trying to be a pacifist and going :DDDDD a lot yknow. And what I came up with in my own mind for that change was a deal of (this makes more sense with the anime canon tbh, the manga honestly doesn’t do any of this well) like Kaneki after The Shit Went Down With Hide (whichever canon you’d like to interpret that as) he basically realized that he really couldn’t be a ghoul, he didn’t want to be, he didn’t want to hurt people and he wanted to be happy and make other people happy instead of what he thought was right before (trying to fight to protect others on his own etc) because that mentality had gotten people he loved hurt, and well subconsciously I guess that kind of factored into his development into Haise and maybe caused his memory loss (along with the, yknow, shanked eye.) So when I started to read it that kind of checked out, this is what he’s trying so hard to be now. But then this whole bullshit of the whole other like, 37 different versions of kaneki complicated things.

Haise was scared that when he got his memories back he would cease to be, well, Haise, and he would just like revert back to what he was before everything. Which I can understand him being scared of and I think was a good point in the plot for him to worry about that, but I was like “oh honey don’t worry that’s not how it works” and was kind of vying for him to eventually get his memories back, come to terms with the fact that those were his memories, he did do those things, he was half a ghoul, and maybe come back to his original fight of wanting to bring the humans and ghouls together, still caring about his human people in the ccg and all. That development was real, and it wouldn’t just go away if he got his memories back, he learned a lot and grew a lot and he has a different outlook on life now. Right?

Fucking wrong I guess. Dude gets his memories back (very ambiguously, it was really hard to tell when that even happened tbh) and like. Turns into a flaming ass looking like ebony darkness dementia raven way. Haise gone. Fucking completely. No trace left. Doesn’t care about his kids anymore. When he’s done with that and goes white again he’s just Kaneki again and there’s really not enough left of things that like, really wouldn’t go away? He loses the flair? The dumbass? The :D? The Extra? WHY? Why would those things go away? Haise shouldn’t have been right that he would disappear when he got back his memories. That killed me. I love Kaneki and all but H a i s e. He is my b o y. H i m. With his e n e r g y s h o r t s. And his m o m. And his c o o k i n g. And his k i d s, I l o v e him. And Ishida doesn’t seem to realize that they’re... literally the same person. Haise isn’t just some stupid bastard occupying Kaneki’s body, he’s a valid part of Kaneki himself and to be honest, peak Kaneki. Should have stayed that way. Would have been great for Hide tbh. Not just having him pretty much revert to his old self, but basically respond equally to both names and balance the world between human and ghoul. I would have loved that. What happened for real? It doesn’t make sense and it breaks my heart.

Some people on the interwebz try to kind of even that whole deal out by trying to say he like, has DID, which although is obviously a valid thing, like, so does not apply to him. God I’m like so not an expert on this but I feel like it’s not that hard to tell. His 87 little Kanekis in his head aren’t separate personas, they’re metaphorical representations of his past morals, experiences, and ideologies that all conflict. Again Haise here is peak conflict because when he gets his memories back, he has all these different conflicting ideas that were all previously separate. They’re all him. Tortured Kaneki constantly yelling at him in Jason’s chamber is basically again, a metaphor for how he’s denying his ghoulhood and the trauma that he’s been dealt. It’s not that this dude still exists just the way he is ready to show up at any moment lmao. Ishida kind of dealt with that badly too because Haise really said

after his memories happened so I can see why people might, but it’s... not right, and it’s Ishida’s fault about that which is Incorrect

Also just blanket statement, black reaper Kaneki? Fuck him and all he stands for. 0% valid. I can excuse literally every other version of him. But wh y. God he leaves the room and Urie starts misusing his power and getting groomed by a pedo, Saiko is just, left behind and sad, Mutsuki gets captured by a perv and mentally destroyed again, Shirazu dies and the bitch is like like “lol it’s your fault” yeah helpful, die

10. P- the- the porn chapter-

Idk about you but that was so fucking unecessary??? Not even going off of how terribly awkward and weird it was to have it there when the opening was “i’m sad about my best friend who’s gonna get executed what do you do when you’re sad about your best friend” “i simply do not think of him or i might actually just curl up and die” “yo lmao same” “wanna fuck” Like ok um I’m biased bc i’m not straight but I like, really hated that. Even just flipping through the pages as fast as I could to get to the end of it like. God. It’s not a fucking hentai. I’m here for the plot. If you’re not gonna release the director’s cut of kaneki fucking voring hide, i don’t think i need to see 20 pages of straight fucking sex. And if you absolutely must have porn, kaneki is a fucking bottom. That man gets pegged do not try to prove otherwise. You started it out that way god I love how they’re like “oh god wait that looks kind of gay, the woman being dominant, better stop that right now” god Ishida not having a single iota of knowlege about his own characters aND THEN SHE GETS PREGNANT? NO. Excuse me. No. I just. I. Why. This isn’t. A fucking porno. This isn’t tentacle porn i swear oh my god kill me

11. Giving the wrong characters attention

Basically, redeeming characters that should have been redeemed and not going into/discussing characters that should have been redeemed/had more backstory. For example, Tsukiyama can go fucking die. I like, do not even care rich boy. I don’t understand how anyone could think he needed to be redeemed he’s just a gay attention whore who really needs to let this kid get on with his merry fucking life. I don’t care. I literally did not need to read three whole books about his dumbass hangup over eating Kaneki. Kaneki doesn’t fucking want you bitch move on. He didn’t need to be redeemed or seen to be in any way sympathetic, no one wanted it. Same with that bitch ass Furuta, he wasn’t really redeemed but he was given w a y too much time to play out his sob story. God man Rize doesn’t fucking want you. These gross ass simps. I swear.

On the other hand, I kind of liked Eto even though she’s a pile of shit, and I got mad when they didn’t really go into much about her. And you know who could have gotten much more screen time/development? TOUKA. God, I love her and she was just sitting around in the background being straight. Let her have some spicy development. Also obviously, Hide. He was... so underappreciated and underexplained? What happened with him? He didn’t just pick himself off the ground in the sewers and go ‘well i’d better get back to the ccg now’ we have a whole two years which are completely unexplained, most of which he was off mysteriously being involved in things but completely missing the eye of Haise and other major players. Where tf was he? How did he get around? What was he even doing??? I wanna know about that! Not all the characters I hate’s tragic backstories that make me feel 0% more sympathetic towards them :)

12. ARE WE ALL JUST GONNA COLLECTIVELY IGNORE THE WHOLE VORE THING???

Ok like i know i say “the entire reason I read :re was __” but like to be honest this was the turning point, I saw pictures of hide’s vore face and went like

So I was like “god fucking damn it ok, Ishida would you care to explain this to me” *cracks open re*

And then they DIDN’T.

Like. It’s actually laughable how much that entire situation was just glossed over. They gave that maybe like two pages. Like what. I. This manga has more sex scene than no homoing that. They just don’t even bother to. I feel like Ishida had that as a plot point but realized halfway in how it looked (i.e., really fucking gay) and decided that was something that he was just gonna, not deal with. Just act like that’s a completely normal heterosexual bro thing to do. Like of course anywhere would be pretty gay but Kaneki chose his face. His face. Like his face and his wholeass neck and his shoulders and nowhere else. (and assumedly like, his tongue, seeing as how the dude can’t talk... bruh) Dude really said extreme hickey. French kiss to the max. Ishida clearly did realize that generally, you can only get a bitten off face by,,, having your face bitten off, which is just inherently really fucking gay. Like, I’m just at a loss as to how it even makes sense. You wouldn’t think that the skin off his face, and specifically around his mouth, would really be the most nutritious thing to consume? I can get like the shoulders but generally you’d think something like his arm or leg would be 1.less inconvenient, and 2.much more logical and nutritious? But NO, Kaneki was like “you know what i’m gonna do? eat your Face” and hide’s like “lmao sounds cool”

(not to mention, wasn’t there another guy with a vore face somewhere? like that old guy in the ccg with the bigass turtleneck, i wanna know about him) But like... my bro Ishida went “yeah this happened but i’m going to cover it up with speech bubbles and the ends of panels guys they clearly had their socks on” Dude didn’t even TRY to explain otherwise. Like hey man, that’s pretty damn gay, you are kind of at liberty to either tell me why otherwise, or accept those implications and acknowledge them?? It’s really hilarious when you ignore it cause it’s like

13. What the fuck was even the plot omg

God I’ve been writing this post for like five hours so like, I’ll keep it short but like it made sense in the original, not to be like an anime fan but the anime made fucking sense (not re i mean like the original) this lore is so fucking stupid god, the horrors of the entire fucking dragon arc bleach my eyes, unresolved plotlines who???? (the whole ‘oh yeah also ur dying of old age’ thing etc, is kaneki like??? still doing that?? or was that randomly resolved with the whole spewing ovary bullshit i’m going to fucking kill myself) and to top it off, good job Ishida at a real fucking cheap ending.

You gave them. Fake human. Really? They just come up with artificial human at the end. Kind of undermines the entire fucking story my guy. Ah yes throw out our whole plot. That was the whole tragedy. You gotta eat human. The ghouls have to eat human and that’s tragic bc they have to kill people or whatever. Or i guess they fucking don’t well fucking ok. God you could have just had them negotiate a kind of peace where the ghouls can get dead humans and such, there are plenty of them and no one has to kill anyone then, there could be a rule system for it, it would be messy but eventually everyone would be ok with it, and I think that would work a lot better than “quick fix i made some hamburger helper human you can eat it fine” guys wtf. It’s like Ishida started plotting out the ending for re approximately 2 hours before his deadline. Anyway yes I hate re and I love yelling about it thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Raiders

Part I

In space, shitty things still happen, even to otherwise nice SecUnits. Part II of the strange idea that’s been wandering around in my head.

According to Transport, we exited a wormhole into one of the lesser-used shipping lanes and were scheduled to jump again within a matter of hours. Six cycles into the trip, I was getting used to dealing with the somewhat hyperactive ship and its significantly calmer captain.

Right then, I was sitting on the floor in the ship's control room while it happily described what the instrument panels around me were used for. The Traveler liked teaching, and it especially liked that I was completely unfamiliar with how wormhole jumps functioned. I think it appreciated having a lot of ground to cover and a captive audience at its disposal.

Security constructs don't get much in the way of education. I know several ways of rendering a human unconscious but have never seen any marine-based lifeforms. Also, listening to Transport and Skye explain the details behind wormhole jumps helped to pass the time.

Right then, the ship was demonstrating how its external shields worked to keep stray debris from puncturing holes in its exterior hull. The resulting light show looked absolutely stunning. I might've stood there for a few seconds, just marveling at the view, when our proximity alarms went off.

I tapped into the feed just in time to overhear as the ship updated the captain in real-time about the nature of the alarm. Transport had given me near-unlimited access to its resources at some point after leaving the station, so I could see its own diagnostics.

Results: we'd been shot.

According to the ship's piecemeal timeline, an unknown vessel had entered real space moments after us. Wile Transport was still ascertaining the identity of the newcomer, the smaller vessel had fired on us. Several large, projectile missiles were incoming; according to Transport's calculations, at least some of the damage would likely penetrate through its deflective shielding.

Owens sprinted up to the bridge and dropped unceremoniously into the pilot's seat. "Strap yourself in," she told me, pointing at one of the other chairs in the room. "This is gonna get bumpy."

I got up and took a couple of steps toward the nearest seat, and then the ship around me shook and seemed to twist. Like someone had flickered the gravity off and then back on again. The captain swore under her breath while Transport explained, "We've been grabbed by a tractor beam. Unidentified vessel on approach. Vector analysis places its approach near our cargo bay airlock."

"Is that... common?"

"It's probably raiders. Probably looking to board and see what they can grab." The captain's hands flowed across the controls with insane speeds, for a human at least. "That's the most common tactic. I went straight for the bridge door. "I'm going down there." Up there, technically, since the cargo bay sat on the periphery of the habitable sections of the ship. I might be of absolutely no use in a space-based fight, but if anyone stepped foot onto the Traveler...

Well, that I could do something about.

"SecUnit, wait." Skye twisted in her seat. "You need a weapon." She gestured toward a locker that popped open at her command. "We'll do what we can to buy you time. Don't get killed out there."

My insides melted, figuratively speaking. I wasn't sure what the fuck to do with this feeling; it's not a common occurrence for humans to care about the survival of their SecUnits.

"Yes, ma'am," said my buffer -- presumably to the bit about needing a weapon.

I grabbed a projectile weapon from the armory locker and sprinted down the hall to the cargo area. Transport rode shotgun inside my head. It was also helping Owens outmaneuver, or at least stall, the raiders. And it was sending out distress messages to nearby beacons. Helpfully, it sent me a video feed out of the outside of the cargo airlock.

The raiders' smaller but much faster ship looked like a dark blob in a sea of darkness. I could only identify the vessel because Transport was marking its position and trajectory for me. The cylindrical shell was coming directly at us, flattened nose facing toward us.

"ETA, 45 seconds," Transport informed me when I reached the cargo bay.

The inside of the cargo space looked like a giant, open warehouse. It was filled with boxes of various shapes and sizes, all started somewhat haphazardly in uneven rows. The layout had something to do with how the freight would be dropped off at the Transport's many destinations. As far as a firefight went, I had plenty of cover.

I chose a hiding spot on top of a metal box that was almost twice my height. Tossing a gun on top, I clambered up after it and lay prone, watching the airlock door. The ship lent me a couple of its drones, and I stationed them around the room, giving me a bird's-eye view of the incoming assholes.

Five hostiles tried to board the Traveler.

Their ship spat out a long, flexible tube, which attached itself to the outside of our airlock. Someone inside the tube manually released the seals holding the airlock shut and then pushed open the heavy metal door with a mining tool. Ugly but effective.

Transport slammed down its atmosphere-sealing barriers to keep air from escaping into the vacuum of space, but the momentary depressurization felt sickening. I might be made of synthetic parts, but my internals sent off a flurry of error messages.

The raiders stepped into the cargo space in a huddled bundle of bodies and projectile weapons. They wore heavily-shielded space suits, almost as though those suits provided armor. Hint: they mostly don't. Even in the room's dim lighting, I could see them moving through the drone's cameras. I could also hear their stops echoing through the open space. Beyond sticking together, they didn't appear to have any kind of formation.

Outside of the dangerous weapons, these were amateurs. Huh.

The captain pinged me that she was in the safe room just down the hall. She was ready to provide backup, but honestly, I didn't want her anywhere near the fighting. Too many well-meaning humans had shot me before -- all while trying to be helpful. Also, humans can't take nearly as much damage as constructs. Maybe that last reason was the most pressing one.

The targets looked around and started banging on a few of the closest boxes. One of them produced a hand scanner and waved it around. I was pretty sure they were communicating with each other via a private comm system, which meant that Transport probably couldn't shut it down. It was checking anyway because it had the processing power to spare.

Meanwhile, I lined up a shot from where I was hidden on top of a container. Once the firefight started, I would have a limited amount of time to take out the intruders. I had a plan—sort of.

I took out the target on the left, now dubbed Hostile One. They were the most daring of the bunch and had put some distance between themselves and the rest of their group. It made them an easy target. They were also the one with the scanner, so taking them out would slow the rest of the group.

The shot tore through the raider's shoulder, piercing the suit. The bullet must've lodged inside the human because there was no exit hole, so far as I could tell. Hostile One dropped their gun and yelped in obvious pain. The rest of the group gaped at their now-bleeding friend and then started waving their own weapons around menacingly. As though it would somehow help them locate the shooter.

Hint: it wouldn't.

Unfortunately for me, the recoil on my weapon hurt like help. It probably shouldn't have, if I could hold the large gun correctly, but with only one arm, that wasn't going to happen. Given the circumstances, I turned down my pain receptor and aimed again.

I managed to get a second shot at one of the other hostiles before the group collectively figured out where I was and started shooting. Hostile Two wasn't as lucky as his friend. My hit took his arm clean off. Most of the enemy fire went wide -- I have no idea where they were aiming -- but when I tried to take out asshole number three, one of their bullets hit me in the chest.

I dropped my weapon and backed away, out of their line of fire. I still had my in-built arm cannon, but I would need to get closer to use it effectively. It wasn't meant for long-distance fighting.

Memory fragment: there's a human on the ground. They look exhausted. I can see bruises on their bare arms. A different human gestures toward me and tells me to shoot. I do.

In the feed, Transport had shared the video from my eyes and the drones with the captain. So, she knew I'd gotten shot. Owens should have stayed put; if I was in charge of security, I would have advised her not to engage. But the Traveler wasn't my responsibility, and this wasn't a contract. Also, I didn't have time to verbalize any of that before the captain left the perfectly safe room and came through the door behind me.

The two remaining raiders reacted to the sudden noise by shooting anything and everything. Transport thought they might be scared; I told it that I didn't care what they were, other than hostile and annoying. I scooted forward, angled my arm, and shot the fourth hostile in the face. That took out the raider's suit, and he crumpled to the floor.

Meanwhile, the last asshole caught sight of the captain -- she was trying to keep a low profile, but the suits probably had some amount of targeting support built-in. In the split second while the one remaining raider set up her shot, I calculated my odds and then rolled off my hiding platform and landed between her and Owens.

Oh, for fuck's sake, I thought as the raider shot me. Pretty much point-blank. I shoved my arm cannon in her face and fired. And fuck, being shot hurts! Then, I looked down at myself.

I was leaking and didn't feel good.

The whole thing might've gone way better if I had two working arms, but more importantly, if the human had let me just do my job. Still, I was moving, and the hostiles weren't. That had to count for something.

Owens ran up to me and took stock. Her expression went from concerned to horrified. She had the gun holstered with the safety on, so that was one less thing to worry about.

Transport burst into my feed. "Are you all right?"

Fucking stupid question. "Performance reliability rating at 50% and dropping."

"Report to the medical bay immediately."

That was the logical course of action, and I knew it. But the moment the medical suit got its hands on me, it would know about my short circuited governor. Odds were good that it would fix that along with everything else. So, I didn't want to go anywhere near it.

I probably should've said that. Instead, what came out was: "Fuck you."

Skye, who was privy to the exchange, shook her head. "Whatever you're worried about, we'll take care of you. I promise. Just do that thing I asked and don't die on us."

"I don't want to go back."

"You don't have to," the captain reiterated.

"If MedSystem fixes me, I might."

"Not on my watch. SecUnit, Medical, now. Or I will drag you there, kicking and screaming."

I made it to the medical platform on my own. MedSystem scanned me while I leaked onto its pristine and sterile surface and then informed me that I had a terminal case of being a construct. It didn't phrase it quite like that, but I got the gist.

Performance rating dropping.

Thanks, useless diagnostic tool, for stating the obvious. I turned off the notification and backburned the data coming from my body. MedSystem would have to sort out what was and wasn't working because I was getting little more than garbage data by then. And everything hurt. And I was freezing. And there was a shutdown threatening, postponed only by the medical system's attempts to stabilize me.

Transport spoke up. "It'll be all right."

"No, it won't," I told it.

"Want to watch something together?"

"I don't think I could concentrate on anything." I doubted I had enough awareness for much of anything.

"I downloaded a standard construct template, and I've customized it a little. You'll like it."

Consciousness was fading fast. I think I said something about not wanting to be human. I don't know for sure what, if anything, came out.

1. Tell me about yourself. I am a 16 year old artist who has been working with portraiture, both realistic and cartoonish, since I was very small. I have won 2 consecutive awards for the international government-run ‘Manga Jiman’ competition, both in 2019 and 2020, winning the youths prize in 2019 and both the youths prize and 7th place in 2020, ‘making history’ as I won the youths prize two years running. The music I listen to inspires me a lot as what I draw can sometimes entirely depend on what I am listening to at the time. I have had a major interest in manga and anime since I was young and that has also influenced my style of work and the fandoms I go around to spread my collection of work to different places of the internet.

2. Why do you want to work for us? I love the fact your company will represent a range of illustrators, both well-known and up and coming. That makes you seem much more open to different styles of work and experimentation to me which I find myself drawn to.

3. What can you bring to our company? Why should we hire you? I can bring a range of styles. Like Ive said before, I work in both realism and cartoonish styles of work, which I feel could bring more people in from completely different sides of the art world. I can also work with a wide range of mediums, from digital work to watercolors, although I find myself preferring digital for the clarity you can get in an image.

4. What do you know about our company? You were established in central London in the 1970’s and are now working worldwide. You cover all sides of the art world from traditional works to GIF’s. You say you have a personal relationship with your illustrators. You have also represented artists that have worked with well-known bands for album art which include Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones, and have also had artists under your wing work with film studios like when Joe Petagna created the concept for the Facehugger in Alien.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What are your career goals? I hope to see myself with enough of a following to simply be able to create for myself and be able to make a living, as selfish as that sounds. I don’t enjoy working for others unless I like their concepts and ideas as I will just simply be uninterested in what I create and end up producing something boring as a result. I want to work to the best of my ability, and as much as the art world is ran on what others want to see, I want to dictate what I do in the process while also getting approval from the people who will consume it.

6. Why did you choose this field/career path? I chose this career path as it’s the only thing I know. As I child I would never let myself do anything but draw, I was obsessed with the gratification I got when I saw that I was improving. That was probably a detriment in the long run as now I feel obligated to work in the art industry because if I don’t what have I been doing this whole time. I feel like I owe it to myself and to the people who have funded my interests and hobby.

7. Can you tell me about your role in your current place of work? Right now I am a college student, so my role is to learn. I will create, be criticized and create again. My job is to learn from the criticism and improve upon myself to represent the collage in a good light as well as myself, and hopefully gain recognition so the collage can say that they taught me for better reputation.

8. What are your strengths/weaknesses? My biggest weakness is my pride. I will become quite offended by the slightest bit of criticism that I think isn't warranted, and yet I am so self-critical that I will rip a piece to shreds if I go a touch out of my lines while painting. It hurts to have my fears confirmed that I won't be the gifted child forever and that I will blur into the crowd of other talented artists in my classroom. It's not only that but also the thought that I spent so long on a piece to be told that it didn’t match up to an idea someone else wanted or there wasn’t enough color, and I find myself unconsciously lashing out, but I am trying to work past that and take the criticism thankfully. Despite that, what could be considered one of my greatest strengths from time to time will be my stubbornness, as I will stick to a plan I like no matter what others tell me might go wrong, which sometimes works in my favor. Technically, I am more skilled with watercolors and digital mediums than I thought I was, as the amount of people I hear struggle with them is astonishing to me as I find I work with them with relative ease, but to counter that I now struggle with mediums such as acrylics and colored pencils as Ive laid off them for so long. I hope to get better with those mediums in the future as I practice more with them again.

9. Tell me about a time when you worked in a team? Were you a leader/coordinator/etc.? I studied performing arts when I was at The Academy Grimsby secondary school. We were tasked to create a script or scenario based on a prompt that I can't quite place now, and we were a group of 4 actors as most people there were dancers. I ended up writing up the entire script that I put together, although the others did prompt some ideas, and almost directing practices. I felt I was forced into a leading position as the others weren't engaging as much as they probably should have, apart from one other person who seemed to take it as seriously as I did. I feel despite the fact I was practically shoved into the lead, and even though the script was probably shoddy as I had never really written besides from creative writing in English, I lead them well considering I was known to be quite antisocial and introverted. That situation made me realize that I was better at controlling situations and being assertive to others than I ever thought I would be, although I wasn’t too strict or bossy from what I remember.

10. Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge. What was your reaction? How did you solve it? I faced quite a big challenge when I created the first page of my 2020 Manga Jiman entry. In the first page you get quite a copious amount of building shots, and while it looked good how I imagined it, I realized when I had finished the sketch that I had never really drawn a building before. It took me two days of constant redoing, experimentation and almost scrapping the first page entirely before I finally felt happy with what I had produced. Nowadays I find it much easier to step out of my comfort zone and delve into architecture when drawing backgrounds, and I feel this experience helped me progress as an artist.

11. Tell me about an accomplishment you are most proud of. Ive mentioned this before a copious amount of times, but my Manga Jiman awards. As they are government run and judges by professional mangaka (manga creators) I think it gives my awards that extra flair of pride that makes me cling to them. The thing I will probably particularly cling to is the fact they said I was ‘making history’ with my consecutive youths prize wins, which I think is quite a good thing to be able to say on a resume. Not only that, but my winning submission for the 2020 competition was given a talk about on the award ceremony by a legendary mangaka Kiriko Kubo, who said my ‘line was neat, the layout was good and the main character was charming.’,’the work can be read smoothly’, and that ‘creating atmosphere is important, and being able to do it like this is an exellent talent’. It gives me pride that someone so prestigious in a world I had barely entered would praise my work so highly.

12. What motivates you? What can motivate me most are two things: approval from others and money. I am materialistic at heart but also sensitive to others comments on my work, so the both end up being great pushes in my art career. I feel if I am being paid for my work that it is worth something, because objectively it is, and being praised for what I do makes me feel validated beyond what I thought was possible, so the two can push me to keep going.

13. What was your biggest failure? What did you learn from it? My biggest failure is the many times Ive tried to work with soft pastels. I don’t know what it is with that medium that renders me unable to function with them but I cannot create a good piece with those sticks of chalk in my hands. I learnt that I am not the best with dry mediums and should probably keep to my paints and digital mediums for now, although I'm always open to trying them out again and again until I get used to them.

14. What was your biggest mistake? How did you fix it? My biggest mistake was thinking I was going to get placed in my first Manga Jiman entry in 2019. I was 15 at the time, so there wasn’t much of a chance I was going to be placed within the top 10 because of my age alone but I didn’t realize that at the time. I had gotten so apprehensive about results that should've been obvious from the moment I was shortlisted, but I was aiming for the top 5 in the placings. I still think that my work might've placed in top 5 had I been older, but the embarrassment and sadness about ‘only’ getting youths prize at the time was almost overwhelming. That experience taught me not to get my hopes up on stuff like that and set myself up for the worst when it comes to things like this in the future, which I did in the 2020 entry. I was simply aiming for 10th place as I wasn’t even aware the youths prize was being awarded that year because there was only 11 of us, and one of the prizes was the yonkoma award for people who were between 11 and 13 containing a single 4 panel page which one of the shortlisted entries mirrored. I ended up getting more that I thought I would've in the terms of awards and recognition which I was happy about.

15. Are you willing to relocate/travel? I am willing to relocate and travel, although i would prefer to do so with someone else I trust as I tend to get nervous in new situations should that be possible.

16. Do you have any hobbies? What are they? I don’t really do much other than draw for my social media’s and complete collage work. I do small things such as singing and watching twitch streamers, but those are few and far between or happening while I work so I don’t think they can be considered big hobbies of mine. I used to bake when I had to take a lot of time out of secondary school due to sickness but I had a lot of spare time back then so it was more possible for me to have hobbies other than art.

17. What are your computer skills/technical skills? I know how to work almost all Microsoft programs, office 365/outlook, and various digital art programmes such as medibang paint pro and the basics of photoshop/illustrator. I also know general video editing such as keyframing and audio manipulation in Wondershare Filmora.

18. How did you hear about this position? I chose to contact you for this position as I had found you take submissions for new artists to represent and thought I'd shoot my shot.

19. What are your salary requirements? Minimum wage and whatever you/the client feel I deserve on top of that, even if that’s nothing at all. As long as I get minimum wage for my work and supplies, I am fine with that.

Nearly a month after its release, Cyberpunk 2077 remains a hotly contested game. From those who have seen all of the game’s endings to those who are just trying to understand what all the buzz is about, nearly everyone seems to have an opinion on Cyberpunk 2077 and those opinions are rarely exactly alike.

Cut through the divisiveness, opinions, and occasional drama, though, and you’re left with the question “Is Cyberpunk 2077 a Success?”

It’s a seemingly simple question that proves to be much more complicated than you may anticipate. In an attempt to add some statistical context to the Cyberpunk 2077 situation, though, here’s our breakdown of the most notable metrics that typically define success in gaming and what they tell us about how CD Projekt Red’s game is really performing so far.

Cyberpunk 2077 Critic Reviews

While the initial Cyberpunk 2077 reviews were largely positive, subsequent critic reviews have proven to be noticeably more mixed.

To briefly illustrate this point, let’s take a look at how Cyberpunk 2077‘s OpenCritic aggregate score compares to other major multi-platform releases from 2020.

While those numbers offer a glimpse at how Cyberpunk 2077 compares to some of its closest competition, the biggest reason Cyberpunk 2077‘s initial review scores differ so wildly from its current aggregate scores can be attributed to the nature of the Cyberpunk 2077 review process.

See, the outlets that received early “review” copies of Cyberpunk 2077 were not allowed to capture direct gameplay footage for use in pre-release reviews. That meant that most of us didn’t get to see just how buggy the game really is. More importantly, none of the early Cyberpunk 2077 reviews covered what turned out to be the game’s truly disastrous console ports. The current Metacritic review scores for each version of the game highlight the scope of the quality discrepancy:

Cyberpunk 2077 (PC) – 86

Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4) – 56

Cyberpunk 2077 (Xbox One) – 61

You may notice those scores don’t include specific categories for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. Well, that’s because next-gen consoles are currently running what is essentially a slightly enhanced backward-compatible version of the game. While the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Cyberpunk 2077 perform better than the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, the title’s “proper” next-gen upgrade hasn’t been released yet.

In case you’re wondering, our reviewer gave Cyberpunk 2077 a 3.5 out of 5, and a panel of our contributors named Cyberpunk 2077 the 7th best game of 2020.

That’s the odd place we find ourselves in when taking the temperature of Cyberpunk 2077‘s critical reception. It’s almost impossible to talk about the game without adding numerous asterisks designed to separate the various versions of the game. Still, there is a noteworthy experience in Cyberpunk 2077 underneath all the bugs, all the problems, and even some of the potentially missing features.

Yet, it feels safe to say that Cyberpunk 2077‘s review scores have proven to be noticeably lower than previously anticipated. The best evidence of this can be found in CD Projekt Red’s decision to give employees a bonus regardless of whether or not Cyberpunk 2077 achieved the previous review score benchmark they set for the game (a 90 aggregate score on Metacritic).

That’s as clear of an indication as you’re going to get in regards to a company putting their money where their mouth is in regards to whether or not their product met expectations.

Cyberpunk 2077 User Reviews

While Cyberpunk 2077‘s critic reviews are mixed for a variety of reasons, the game’s user reviews tell a slightly clearer tale. Here are the current Metacritic user scores for the various versions of the game:

Cyberpunk 2077 (PC) – 7.2

Cyberpunk 2077 (PS4) – 3.5

Cyberpunk 2077 (Xbox) – 4.8

Again, there’s a noticeable gap between the PC and console versions of the game, but the theme you see in nearly all of the game’s user scores is an emphasis on the project’s technical problems.

That emphasis can certainly be attributed to the fact that many console gamers had to find out the hard way that their version of the game was broken, but even the reception of the PC version has been harsher among those who not only had to pay for the game but likely weren’t able to play it on the kind of high-end PCs available to many top review outlets.

Look beyond the technical issues, and you’ll find that many user reviews are more likely to highlight some of the game’s other problems. Some of those problems can certainly be attributed to the sometimes unreasonably high (and inaccurate) expectations for the game, but as we’ve also pointed out, there are elements of the Cyberpunk 2077 experience that leave you wondering whether we’re playing the game CD Projekt Red intended to make.

Again, there are quite a few Cyberpunk 2077 players who will praise the game at any opportunity. It’s certainly deserving of much of that praise. Yet, it again feels safe to say that Cyberpunk 2077‘s reception has been colder than previously anticipated.

Cyberpunk 2077 Player Count

User review scores can be misleading for a variety of reasons, which is why one of the truer tests of a game’s success has long been how many people remain engaged with it over a longer period of time.

So far as that goes, Cyberpunk 2077‘s Steam player count figures paint a potentially troubling picture. A recent report from Githyp suggests that Cyberpunk 2077 has lost 79% of its concurrent players since it launched on December 10. That number only applies to Steam, but it feels reasonable to suggest that similar trends will emerge if you view similar figures across multiple stores and services.

To be entirely fair, that kind of drop is hardly a surprise when you’re talking about a single-player game with a campaign that can be completed in about 20-30 hours (under the right conditions), but there are a couple of other factors you need to consider when looking at these numbers.

Namely, it’s been noted that it took months (not weeks) for The Witcher 3 to see a 79% player drop on Steam. Again, part of that can be attributed to the larger size of The Witcher 3‘s campaign, but it’s also been noted that many open-world games typically retain more players over a longer period of time than “traditional” single-player titles.

Still, the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 currently boasts the fifth most concurrent players on Steam (at the time of this writing) tends to suggest that quite a few people are still engaging with it in a meaningful ways. To put it another way, those who stuck with Cyberpunk 2077 have seemingly chosen to spend quite a few hours in the game.

CD Projekt Red was quick to report that Cyberpunk 2077 sold 13 million copies in its first two weeks of retail availability. The company also noted that figure was good enough to ensure that the game had already recouped its development costs.

However, there are factors that complicate the significance of that figure. First off, you may recall that Cyberpunk 2077 was removed from the PlayStation Store as part of an industry-wide response to the numerous refund requests for the game. The fact is that we don’t know exactly how many copies of Cyberpunk 2077 have been returned thus far.

For the moment, though, let’s assume that the number of Cyberpunk 2077 returns thus far have not drastically impacted the game’s initial sales figures. Let’s also assume that the subsequent sales of Cyberpunk 2077 have been comparatively modest.

While Cyberpunk 2077 likely still recouped its development costs in that scenario, let’s be clear that recouping costs is typically the floor of sales expectations when you’re talking about these kinds of projects. It’s been suggested that CD Projekt Red expects to sell over 25 million copies of the game during the title’s first year of availability, and their ability to reach that figure may hinge on the quality of the game’s 2021 update’s as well as the anticipated release date of the title’s DLC and multiplayer.

Put it all together, and it seems like Cyberpunk 2077‘s sales figures are either at or below expectations but seemingly not noticeably ahead of anticipated sales figures.

Is Cyberpunk 2077 A Success?

It’s tempting to answer that question with “Yes” or even “Technically, yes” given the game’s strong enough sales figures, but when you really put everything together, the answer has to trend closer to “No.”

CD Projekt Red knew that Cyberpunk 2077 was going to enjoy a strong debut, even if they had to manufacture a review process that would potentially bolster its initial scores. Yet, when you factor in current review scores, the company’s public statements, and rumors of internal drama within CD Projekt Red, it sounds like Cyberpunk 2077 has failed to meet more expectations than not.

It’s almost impossible to call Cyberpunk 2077 an abject failure given its creative successes and relatively strong player counts/sales, but the early metrics that are publicly available reinforce the idea that calling the game a success requires you to ignore too many factors that complicate that situation.

What remains to be seen is whether CD Projekt Red can turn what could be generously categorized as a technical success into a comeback story for a fighter that probably shouldn’t have lost so many rounds in the first place.

Mortality

a super self indulgent thing that i wrote for the LOADed With Sin AU. set way into the future, like idk i was just feeling sort of melancholy and thinking about what it means to be a droid surrounded by organic friends

“Hey Red.” B2 Battle Droid XK-2561-JS00241—Red, it had been nicknamed, on account of the splotches of rusted metal from being stored in less than ideal circumstances—twisted slightly to acknowledge the presence of it’s Captain. “Mind some company?”

“I am always appreciative of your technical expertise, Captain.” Red answered blandly, handing over the precision tools.

Nia gave him a speculative look at that, hooking her foot around a stool to drag it over. “I’m pretty sure if you’re looking for technical expertise, Loeb would be the one you want.”

“Perhaps.” Red admitted. “But the hairballs have a tendency to clog up my intake ports.”

“Ooh, someone’s in a mood.” She teased. “What are we working on today?”

“Increasing optimal efficiency.” Red answered. “There is a .02% lag in computational commands versus output in my internal weaponry.”

“Not 0.02%.” Nia gasped, pulling the primary firing limb closer to her. “Think of what that could cost us.”

“You are mocking me.” Red answered reproachfully. “What an organic thing to do.”

The smile she gave him was quick and warm, reaching up to her eyes and creating creases in them. There were more than when they’d first met, when she’d accidentally powered it on while hiding on the First Order base. Red supposed that inevitably, it too had to show the passage of years that spanned between the two moments, the rust scoured clean, chassis built and rebuilt time and again to account for upgrades and damage.

But whereas the organics that it considered its colleagues began to slow, biologic processes losing efficiency, Red only improved.

“Hey Red?” Nia didn’t look up as she poked around the calibration system of the photon canon in its arm, precision tools moving and testing the wiring. “You ever think about your own mortality?”

The droid’s optical sensors flickered at that, in an expression that might have been construed as surprise. “I am synthetic. I do not decay as you do.”

She didn’t answer for a moment, reconnecting a wire with a jolt of sensory feedback along its processors. “No, that’s true. Your body does, from wear and tear though, otherwise we wouldn’t be here right now would we? What happens if it gets damaged beyond repair?”

“There are fail safes.” It answered slowly. “My cognitive processors shut down, and the hard drive can theoretically be removed and uploaded into a new format.”

“Theoretically?” She questioned. “That makes you effectively immortal. Or at least, much more difficult to kill.”

“Theoretically.” Red repeated. “In practice it is much more difficult. Ideally this is because of my role, as a B2 Battle Droid it was expected that I would be wholly destroyed in battle.”

“You were primarily functional during the first galactic civil war. Before the Empire got its hands on the clone army.”

Red filtered through its memory banks, which stretched back far, far past the decades spent shut down and non-functional. “I recall them. Generals Skywalker and Kenobi.” The images were there, clear as day, played back like security feed. “Across a barren, red landscape, parts of droids scattered around them. It would have been easy to have fallen the same way and then… there would have been nobody to transfer my hard drive.”

Which was unsurprising, and not uncommon. They were droids, after all, a nearly endless resource if one had the money to pay for it; who would bother going through the effort to extract one hard drive, from one fallen droid, when they could just make a hundred more? Even those that were taken for recovery, it was the data that was desired, not the personality protocol of the droid itself. It wasn’t like they were organic, it wasn’t like it had a soul.

Nia did look up at that, a wounded, pinched expression on her face as she watched it. Her eyes were too expressive, Red thought, micro expressions on her face that made her an open book.

Red didn’t need to hear the words to know the argument churning in that gaze; you exist, you matter, you have a soul even if it’s not like mine.

A lesson she’d learned the hard way, it knew, a lesson she was still paying for.

“You could now though, if you wanted. We have the money, we could have a brand new chassis designed for you. State of the art. You could upgrade, and upgrade, and upgrade. You’d be around long after I was dust.”

“Perhaps.” It had crossed the thought processors, that Red would without a doubt outlast them. “But what form would I take? Who would I trust so intimately to recreate myself?”

“Loeb could do it. Or you could ask Rey. Sasha knows a lot about functional cybernetics since she’s a cyborg herself.” Nia pointed out. “Lizandra, I’m sure, if you asked nicely. Hell, she could probably give you some sort of extra-dimensional body. Like, maybe you could become a sick-ass robo-dragon? Or something that, like, can phase through planes of existence? You could go into alternate dimensions.”

“You assume that a form I would desire.” Red flexed its hand as Nia pulled back, setting the tools down and closing the panel. “Running system diagnostics.”

“Okay then, smarty pants, what form would you like?” She rolled her eyes, reaching over to scratch at the seam where her synthetic hand fused to her arm. “Has to be something good if you’re going to outlive the rest of us.”

“Something worthy of respect.” Red decided. “Which is not to imply that the form of Landilizandra is not worthy of respect—” It had seen the damage the dragon-goddess could inflict, it would be unwise to imply any sort of insult. “—But that is not the form I would wish to be rebuilt into. I am a battle droid, it is what I was when we met, and I would not change while any of you remain.”

“You would wish.” She parroted in a stilted voice, no doubt designed to be a mimicry of it’s own auditory output. “Well, you have time at least. I’m pretty sure Ki’da and Loeb are going to outlive us all. Well, except for the kids at least.”

She paused then, looking pensive. “Still, it must be nice, having the option to decide. To have more control over when natural processes take you.”

“But terribly lonely, I should think.” Red mused. “To remain so unchanging, while those you have come to care for age and die.”

“I suppose so.” She sighed, and there was something off about her tone, about the pensive way she frowned at her own hands. “I suppose I’ve been thinking about my own mortality, and the legacy I’ll be leaving behind. If I shouldn’t have done something more.”

The droid didn’t respond, not verbally, but rather it folded its hands together, turning to regard the human.

“It wasn’t supposed to go like this, my life.” She sighed. “I was going to be… something. A pilot? Not like Poe, Poe can fly anything. But I have a mind for tactics, I’m good in the field, I could have been a New Republic soldier. Could have done things right.”

“And then, after, when my head was relatively unfucked and I had the choice to choose what I wanted, I became a pirate. Not a terrible one, not complete scum, but look at me. This isn’t exactly the legacy I imagined leaving for my children.”

“Perhaps not.” Red admitted. “But a legacy is different things to different people. You will be remembered well, by your children who know you love them, and the people you have helped. You will be remembered well by me, for however long I last. That is your legacy. It will be one worth remembering.”

“You always know just what to say.” She smiled.

In the end, Nia had been right. Ki’dara and Loeb had been the last of the original crew to go.

Those doctor types, they’re like cockroaches, hard to kill.

The procession was grand, as under Gomla’s leadership the Void pirates had grown into an armada of massive size, beyond what their mother could have ever imagined.

She would be proud of the legacy she’d left behind, Red thought. Proud of what she had created.

The air was somber, as the bodies were brought in. Wrapped in the finest silks, soaked in the most expensive of wines and encrusted with gold and jewels. It was tradition; a last display of the decadence of a pirate’s life. And they were bound and lain together, in death as in life.

There were few words, spoken primarily by Shian, the heir they left behind, before it was time to see the bodies dealt with.

And that was tradition too, though it didn’t start that way. They would be fed through the engines, bodies burned down to the smallest of particles and launched out into the void of space to drift among the stars. The Captain had been the first to go like that; she had loved the vast expanse of space, and as her spirit returned to the Force from whence it came, so too would her worldly body return to the cosmos which had created it.

It was beautifully poetic, in a way, which is why the others followed suit. To return to the spaces that they had claimed at her side, together in life as in death. And then others followed even after. Generations that didn’t know what the original Void Squadron was, that didn’t know the touch of the civil war, or the First Order, that weren’t born on the bones of a galaxy trying to recover.

Ki’dara and Loeb washed out into the universe in a spray of gold and blue sparks, their passing marked with tears, with stoicism, and the acknowledging burst of a spray of weapons from the rest of the ships gathered. A fitting farewell, to the last of the founders.

And soon, Red knew, would come the proper farewell. The farewell to their memories, to the lives and legacies they left behind, which would be celebrated with alcohol, and camaraderie.

The droid turned away from the viewport, human fingers—human like, different in that they were made from a foreign metal, black and silver, energy lines flowing with red light—curling around the hood of the jacket and pulling it closer.

An upgrade.

It—he? They?—had left behind the old chassis with the last of the original Squad. Effectively immortal, she had said, and that was true in a way. But Red couldn’t go back, couldn’t stay in the body of the B2 Battle Droid XK-2561-JS00241. So instead it had upgraded, taken a form worthy of the highest respect.

“It’s okay, yeah?” Harroc was at its side, tail twitching and, even with a life extended beyond that of his human progenitor—never as long as that of their mother—Red could see the wear of the decades on him too. Less physically, he didn't age per session, but Red had been there from the beginning, when Harroc had hatched from an egg. And it could see it now, in the bearing, the weight of wisdom in the eyes. An almost kindred spirit in this.

The droid didn’t know what it meant, this new chapter in its life, this new body. But it had been given a chance, long ago, in a humid and sweltering storage room, by a confusing, mortal woman. And truly the best way to honor those fallen comrades was to do whatever it could to find out.

The droid paused, thumb dragging along the curve of a small holodisk, pressing into the center to bring up the image. The original Void Squadron, it was a picture that had been taken for morale, to commemorate what we were and what we are. The hull was familiar, and there they all were, basking in the glory of being the ones to reclaim the Katana fleet. Younger then, the future ahead of them, victory on the horizon.

Red had the image, the entire memory, locked away securely in its memory banks making the holo quite superfluous. At any moment it could replay those memories, and it would be as though nothing had changed, as though it was right back in that moment, could recall the feel of Nia’s arms slung around its shoulders, holding tight. The way Nico would scoff and try to shift away from the camera, only to be pinned between Illeria and Arcturus. How Riva insisted on climbing onto Tyrk’s shoulders. A better time, Red thought, and the pain of knowing that it was all that was left ached like a burnt out hole in his torso.

There had never been organics quite like them before, and there would never be organics quite like them in the galaxy again.

“Yes.” With a sharp nod—jerky, still calibrating this new body—Red set the holo down, on display, these children should remember, with the other trinkets, in memoriam. “It’s okay.”

It was a terribly lonely thing, to be the only one left.

6 Important Things To Consider When Selecting An Audio Interface For Music Recording At Home

The audio port is effectively the center of any personal computer based home recording studio and thus it's extremely important to make the proper selection so that you receive the best results because a wrong decision will restrict you in what you need to reach with your songs.

You can usually get a fairly good deal with all the bundled software that accompanies the hardware since most devices provide something quite decent nowadays. Most ports will collaborate with any of the significant DAW apps which are available on the market. On March 31, we will put our imaginary ideas to a pragmatic test with the new Share 'Artmaker' portable tool kit. This event will be a seminar in which some of Italy's best-known technology artists gather at the Torino Fab Lab to get hands-on with our new creative toolbox.

Why the 'Artmaker' tool set? Because standard, everyday art-supply stores never have the proper tools that the contemporary creative needs for creating machine art, kinetic art, device art, media installations and net.art. The modern tech-artist is a mobile person, and therefore needs lightweight, agile, durable road-equipment, so as to maintain or repair art-devices created in the heavy machine-shop, fab-lab or tech atelier.

Share Festival has therefore assembled the portable 'Artmaker' set, the first toolkit ever specifically curated for the pressing needs of today's technology-artists. The entire set is so portable and lightweight that even a humanities graduate can lift it, and yet it is so intrinsically meaningful, so endowed with creative purpose that you, the artist, will immediately feel the urge to build something complicated with it. We sincerely promise that these tools will efficiently and usefully perform artistic functions!

The Artmaker toolkit is also supposed to be (a) affordable and (b) safe, and here we should frankly admit that our Share Festival Artmaker has some issues. These tools are gorgeous, but they cost a fortune and could easily kill you. So we will be publicly gathering our well-chosen Italian experts to confront the Artmaker set, to figure out whether its artist-users might be wounded or perhaps arrested in airports.

OptimusPhillip Reviews 21: Studio Series 13 Megatron

Last week, I reviewed Studio Series Voyager Optimus, and so now it’s only fitting that I review Studio Series Voyager Megatron. Now, this Voyager Megatron is based on his appearance in Revenge of the Fallen, while the Prime I reviewed is technically based on the first movie, but Prime didn’t really go through any major design changes for Revenge, so I think pairing these two up still works.

Tank Mode

Being the Revenge of the Fallen version, this Megatron transforms into a Cybertronian tank. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any clear shots of the tank in the film itself, so I can’t give a proper comparison. However, I will say that, in those brief glimpses I did catch, they do share the same general profile. The only deviation I noticed is the lack of wings, since Megatron was a flying tank in the film. However, when compared with concept art of his tank mode, he’s practically a dead ringer. If I had to nitpick, the angle of his side intakes is off, but that’s about all I can pick out. It’s been suggested that this toy was actually based on those concept images, and while I can’t find a primary source for that claim, it does make sense given the similarities. Honestly, I really like the look of this, probably even more so with the wings left off, though there are aftermarket options for those if you really miss them. And yes, he does still have the exposed robot head in this mode. It was in the movie, so it has to be there. If that turns you off, you’re going to be disappointed. Personally, I think they do a decent enough job of integrating it into the design, though it is still kind of silly.

Unfortunately, the tank is a bit lacking in functionality. He has four caster wheels on the bottom, which allow him to roll surprisingly well, but the turret is sadly static. Due to the transformation, there is no rotation, and the main barrel only moves downward. However, the side cannons move up and down, so there is that.

The figure is primarily cast in a light gray plastic, with a darker gray (bordering on black) for the treads, as well as the cage around his head. In addition to that, he gets some silver paint apps on the rear of the turret, as well as some bronze picking out mechanical elements, such as booster rockets and the internal mechanisms of the treads. I can easily see someone calling this color scheme drab, but I personally think it works. Megatron in the movie mostly bare silver anyway, so it wouldn’t make sense to give him an elaborate paint deco here. Maybe he would’ve looked better all in silver, but I think the gray works well enough, plus it makes the details that are painted silver stand out more.

Conversion

Megatron’s conversion process is much more of what I like compared to Prime. There’s a lot going on, but it all works in manageable chunks that don’t clash into each other too often. His legs form from the tank treads, while the arms fold out from the tank body, and the turret collapses into the space they leave behind. The only issue I really have is that, when going back into tank mode, it can be difficult getting the tabs on the chest, arms, and turret to line up right. Also, be a little careful with some of the extra leg armor pieces, as they’re just on friction hinges and prone to pop off if you aren’t. It’s nothing major, though. All in all, I’d say it’s a fun, clean transformation... though it does leave some issues in robot mode.

Robot Mode

In robot mode, Megatron is looking about the best he’s ever been. Gone are the disproportionate arms of the Leader and the giant wing kibble of the 2009 Voyager. He’s beefy, spiky, and very screen accurate. On display in this mode is a lot more of the bronze, highlighting the inner workings of his chest and waist. It gives a lot of depth to the design and breaks up the gray very nicely. I really like the head sculpt here. All the jagged shapes and layers are captured beautifully, especially the pseudo-crown shape on the top. What really impresses me, though, is the mouth. It’s rather small, but not only is it picked out in paint, but the teeth are individually molded. It’s a really impressive sculpt on such a relatively small figure.

Going around to the back, the same silver from the tank mode is still present, as well as his jetpack from the movie, also done in silver. Unfortunately, these thrusters don’t form the rear of the tank, but I don’t think there’s a way they could’ve done that while still having a clean robot mode.

Though clean may not be the best word to describe it. While the backpack is very smooth, his torso is visibly hollow from the sides. It sucks, but I can deal with it. It’s only really visible if you look at it straight on with nothing in the way, so it’s hard to see in most poses. Plus, I don’t see any way they could’ve prevented this, since there isn’t much room for extra paneling inside.

Moving onto articulation, he has a staggering amount. Of course he has a ball jointed neck, universal shoulders and hips, bicep and thigh swivels, 90 degree elbows and digitigrade knees. In addition to that, however, he gets articulated fingers. His left hand is in two parts, allowing him to open and close his claws with impressive range, and he even has a jointed thumb on his right arm... even though he has no proper hand. Also, not only does he have an ankle rocker, but he has outward hinges on the toes, though the tolerances on my figure means that the extra armor bit tends to get in the way. Still, it’s a nice touch that gives a bit of added detail to his tread feet.

Of course, Megatron is equipped with the pincer arm he had in the movie. It’s very nicely detailed, with lots of molded in joints and mechanical elements, and of course the fusion cannon inside, done up in silver. While it can’t transform into a normal arm like in the movie, it does still have the previously mentioned jointed thumb, so it’s not completely useless as a hand. And of course, he has his flip-out blade weapon, which he infamously used to stab Optimus through the back before shooting him down in the Forest Battle scene. At 8 centimetres, or 3 inches, it’s impressively large on him (stop giggling!). Along with his fingers, the blade is done in a soft plastic, so there’s little danger of breakage or injury. Still, the blade is nicely detailed, with jagged edges and more mechanical details. It even has some surprisingly sharp points to it, though I doubt it could do any actual damage.

Studio Series has put a large emphasis on scale, so naturally some size comparisons are in order. When both are standing upright, Megatron stands about a head taller than Optimus. While that does seem strange, as near as I can tell rewatching scenes from the movie, that is accurate scale.

Backdrop

Like the rest of the Studio Series line, Megatron comes with a backdrop displaying a famous scene from the movie: in this case, the Forest Battle scene. While I don’t think it’s an exact match for any particular shot, it does match the overall scenery of the sequence really well. Though strangely, the top left corner of the image seems to have a much lower resolution than the rest. You can see the jagged pixels on the highest branches, while the lower brances are smooth and crisp in comparison. I don’t know what that’s all about, but I’ve seen it on other copies, so I don’t think it’s just an error on mine.

As usual, you can stand Megatron in front of the backdrop, and he fits pretty snugly on the platform. Fortunately, he tends to be pretty stable thanks to his gigantic heels, so there’s little danger of him toppling back unless you put him in some extremely backheavy pose. Once again, there’s no room for another figure, so you can’t get any active melee scenes, at least without additional support, but just posing the figure on its own, it’s a good look.

Final Thoughts

Studio Series 13 Megatron is a really well done toy. While it does have some minor issues here and there, he’s screen accurate, highly posable, properly scaled, basically everything Studio Series sets out to be. Combine that with an engaging yet smooth transformation, and this is probably the best representation of Revenge of the Fallen Megatron to date. Of course, whether this figure is worth it to you depends on whether you like that movie’s take on Megatron in the first place, and if you didn’t then this toy isn’t for you. However, if you’re like me and are a fan of this take of Megatron, I would strongly recommend him.

Design and Durability

With a hefty bass speaker and 10,000mAh internal battery, the Tivoo Max weighs in at just under 1.5kg (or just over 3 pounds). That’s heavy enough that it’s uncomfortable to hold in one hand for long. This also means that you’ll do some serious damage to the case or front panel if you drop it.

So despite technically being portable, we wouldn’t suggest taking this out and about for partying. It’s really designed to sit on display and just look stunning.

The pixel display itself is a 140mm square, and the whole Tivoo stands at 185mm tall, 160mm wide, and 86mm deep. Four chrome feet sit on the base, with a chrome dial and button on the side, and four capacitive controls on top for volume, play, and alarm. The main body comes in red (as reviewed), white, or black.

As a Pixel Display

The main function of the Tivoo Max is a bright, customizable 16×16 pixel display. The Divoom app features a huge library of art, and you can save up 12 animations or pictures directly to the Tivoo on a custom favorites channel. Your chosen favorites will just play in rotation.

The viewing angle of the screen is enormous. The large chrome dial on the side changes the “channel”.

Turning the dial on the side selects other channels or features as configured from the app.

As a Speaker

Featuring dual 10W speakers for stereo sound, plus a 20W subwoofer, the audio quality from the Tivoo Max is surprisingly good. It’s easily better than your Amazon Echo, but not quite as good as a Sonos One. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the sound at this price point, that’s for sure. You can hear a sample in the review video.

There’s a visualizer channel too, so if you have audio playing through Bluetooth or the local SD card, you’ll get a selection of music-reactive animations to choose from. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear to work with ambient audio, so if your music is coming from elsewhere, the visualizer will remain static.

The only slightly annoying quirk I found with the Tivoo was that as the primary purpose is to be a display, it was left on most of the time. This meant I had to micromanage the Bluetooth audio connection. With most Bluetooth speakers, you’d only turn them on when you actually want to use them, so the automatic connection is a time saver. With the Tivoo, you may need to turn your Bluetooth off if you don’t want it randomly redirecting your audio when you walk near.

While not truly being a smart speaker, in that there’s no Alexa or Google Home connectivity, the Tivoo Max can nonetheless run a selection of “apps”. Most of these actually run on your phone while using the LED display for visual output. At current count:

It can also just be an ambient light, though not a particularly bright one.

For instance, I understand it’s all the rage now to have hourly alerts telling you to drink water, among those whose sense of thirst is broken. As a bedside clock, the sleep timer is obviously useful. And I’m sure you could amuse your nephew or niece for literally minutes with the games (while recounting stories of how computers used to be).

But most of us will probably just ignore these features, and use it as a nice speaker and incredibly good looking pixel display.
