Legit, I honestly think that part of why I find the main relationship in Colony compelling is both Will and Katie Bowman are incredibly stubborn people who physically cannot do nothing when there is wrong. This leads to their relationship falling apart because they found two different ways to protect the other while dealing with an authoritarian alien occupation.

But in addition to the whole "authoritarian alien occupation makes divorce tricky" thing, they're also both far too stubborn to NOT stick together.

I'm at a point in the show where they just reunited after Some Shit and honestly? I'm loving it. Juicy toxic dynamic, while they're actually TRYING to argue out of their kids earshot and just (chefs kiss)

I think that if you want relationships depicted in your fiction – whether primary media or fan-work – to be emotionally compelling, there's really no getting around the fact that one of the most compelling relationship dynamics in fiction is "hey, wouldn't it be fucked up if".

#relative reccomended colony and i'm liking it #wish they showed more of what the aliens were up to but also i get they're trying to tell a story about humans in occupations #i also love how its showing the pros and cons of running a government in not only a 1984esque way but also brave new world #you get to compare and contrast the two methods of authoritarianism which is fantastic #also these aliens are genre savvy #make a list of the best leaders then kill them then make a list of the most corruptible people and those are in charge of colony blocs #its so systemic too clearly they've done this to other planets #but also the main relationship is fucked up and also the woman in it has agency #not only agency but her being a good mom is shown to be an ASSET in combat situations #she has issues with killing but she still can and she can use her Mom voice to keep others about to freak out on task #like #she and her sister show their femininity is not BAD and can be more effective than machismo in somd scenarios #masculinity isnt bad either #will bowman is hot i mean masculine and it had its uses and downfalls #in short colony is good show
