A little angst for the modern AU because I’m an angst lover :) In the last scene where Tav is on her way to leave for the Last Light Inn, Shadowheart pleads for Tav to stay but Tav tells her “I can’t” because of the hurt she has been through. Shadowheart can only watch in pain as Tav leaves.

On the way back, the rain and dark had settled in, making the drive back difficult. But all Tav can think about was how hurt Shadowheart looked as she watched her drive away. Unknowingly, there is a slippery patch causing Tav to lose control of her Jeep and she crashes. Her last thoughts are of Shadowheart, the memories they shared together, and how she deserves all the happiness in the world. Tav thinks about what could have been between the two of them and regrets leaving Shadowheart like that. She wishes she had stayed, to kiss Shadowheart and to tell her “I’m yours.” Before she succumbs to her injuries from the accident.

When Shadowheart finds out about Tav, she is broken. There are nights where sobs can be heard from her room. She has never confided in anyone as she has with Tav. Those moments they shared together at the studio, at the bar, her apartment, and her home, they are now just fragmented memories of the past. She didn’t even get to properly say goodbye to Tav. Shadowheart has nothing else to remember Tav by other than a small piece of pape that Tav left for her that night, a soiled sweater and Tav’s favourite jacket. Shadowheart wears that jacket all the time. It’s what keeps her closest to what she can call “hers,” it’s what helps her remember what it feels like to be in her arms.

The moment between them was finite.
