Round two of Pokémon Unite concepts! I'll be creating a concept for Pikipek/Trumbeak/Toucannon for this one.
Tumblr media
Pikipek, the Woodpecker Pokémon, Trumbeak, the Bugle Beak Pokémon, and Toucannon, the Cannon Pokémon. This line of Pokémon has a few concepts going for it - from Pikipek's ability to drill holes in trees by pecking it 16 times per second, to Trumbeak's ability to make all sorts of noises by changing its beak shape, to Toucannon who can combust gas in its beak to fire out seeds rapidly. To be honest, this line is not my favourite by a long shot but I think it'll fill an interesting niche in Pokémon Unite (and my friend dared me to try something for it). Some concepts I want to include are repeat moves, projectiles from beaks, sound and an interesting workaround of their ability Skill Link into the Pokémon Unite format.
Toucannon has a good Attack stat, and rather middling other stats. I toyed around with the idea of it being a Speedster due to Pikipek's quick movements, but it suits itself best to being an Attacker, I think. I want it to be a power-up-as-you-fight kind of Pokémon, aided by its Skill Link ability which I'll get into below.
Tumblr media
Pokémon: Pikipek/Trumbeak/Toucannon
Evolves: Level 4, Level 7
Difficulty: Intermediate
Class: Ranged/Att/Attacker
Ability: Skill Link
Tumblr media
Skill Link
The Pokémon has the ability to chain moves so they hit more often in a wider area. The Pokémon has a Beak Gauge that appears like a temperature gauge to the side of the Pokémon. When it hits it's special abilities, its next use of that move will fire an additional time, filling the gauge. Once it has filled the gauge to 5 bars, its next new use of a move will have it shoot four projectiles, then a last more powerful and special projectile. These will be explained further in the move section.
Basic attacks:
Every fifth basic attack becomes a boosted attack. The user will fire out a single seed from its beak for each basic attack, then sends a blast of noise in a long cone for its boosted attack. Boosted attacks reduce move cooldowns by 2 seconds.
Tumblr media
Special Moves:
Special Moves (R/First)
Fury Attack (learned at lvl 1 or 3): The Pokémon fires a dart of energy at the target. On consecutive uses of this move, due to its Skill Link ability, the number of darts increases by one until the Beak Gauge depletes. On each use, the range and area increase slightly. On a fifth use of this move, the darts home in on a target and assaults them with a flurry of 5 darts. The user can hold 3 uses at a time.
Upgrades to either Bullet Seed or Rock Blast at lvl 5.
Bullet Seed: The Pokémon fires a blast of seeds at the target. On consecutive uses of this move, due to its Skill Link ability, the number of shots increases by one until the Beak Gauge depletes. On each use, the range and area increase slightly. On a fifth use of this move, the Pokémon fires off a large seed that deals damage in an area and heals the Pokémon slightly. Consuming a berry or a battle item resets this move's cooldown. The user can hold 3 uses at a time.
Upgrades at lvl 10: Increases the damage output of the move, and lowers its cooldown.
Rock Blast: The Pokémon fires a rock into the air that crashes onto the battlefield, splintering into smaller rocks. This attack does AOE damage. On consecutive uses of this move, due to its Skill Link ability, the number of rocks increases by one until the Beak Gauge depletes. On each use, the range and area increase slightly. On a fifth use of this move, the last rock is larger and causes a brief stun in the area of impact. The user can hold 3 uses at a time.
Upgrades at lvl 10: Increases the damage of this move, and increases the area of impact slightly.
Tumblr media
Special Moves (ZR/Second)
Peck (learned at lvl 1 or 3): The Pokémon disappears momentarily as it dashes toward a target, landing a quick strikes with an empowered beak, then reappears at its starting position. If the Pokémon this move was used on has eaten a berry in the last 10 seconds, steal the berry's effect and fill the Beak Gauge. When the Beak Gauge is full, deliver 3 strikes instead.
Upgrades to either Beak Blast or Hyper Voice at lvl 7.
Beak Blast: The Pokémon builds up energy within its beak, then disappears as it dashes forward, damaging the target massively before returning to its original position. The target is burned for 5 seconds, which hurts the target for its duration. Additionally, the residual heat from the beak powers up the next use of Bullet Seed or Rock Blast if the Beak Gauge is full.
Upgrades at lvl 12: Increases the damage and adds the burn effect to each seed, increasing the burn time by 1 second for each hit.
Echoed Voice: The Pokémon flies up into the air becoming unstoppable. The use fires a cone of sound down at the ground, dealing damage in a large area. Sustained damage to multiple targets makes an echo chamber where the targets have sound waves emanating from them, dealing additional damage to teammates and wild Pokémon.
Upgrades at lvl 12: Increase damage and area of both the original move and the echoed move.
Tumblr media
Unite Move:
Beak Barrage Blast:
Learned at level 9. The Pokémon launches itself into the air, its beak ablaze. For the next 10 seconds, the Beak Gauge remains full and its Bullet Seed or Rock Blast Moves are removed from cooldown. The user cannot use its (ZR/Second) moves for this duration. Once the Unite Move ends, it shoots an additional ammunition type (Seed or Rock) that doubles in range or area. Because the Pokémon overheated its beak for this last blast, Bullet Seed and Rock Blast are then on cooldown for double their original time.
Thoughts and Comments:
Pikipek/Trumbeak/Toucannon is built in a way to create reliable sustained fire that gets stronger the longer its allowed to be in battle. This ability can be quite strong, but it requires set-up, positioning and reliable teammates to be pulled off especially since being an Attacker makes this Pokémon quite squishy. Bullet Seed and Beak Blast are made to go together, and are built to focus down one enemy, while Rock Blast and Echoed Voice are made for team-fight damage support from long range. Cooldown items and emblems might be useful for keeping the moves up and ready to go for maximum damage output at team fights. Having little to no hindrances means this Pokémon is a damage out-putter through and through making positioning and not over-extending super necessary but the damage will be worth it to a skilled player.
Let me know any request and I'll try my best! I've got a few more of these lined up!
Thanks for reading! :)

idle musings on Pokemon game mechanics
Gen 6 introduces a fun minigame to EV train your Pokemon. It was easier, and easier to control, than grinding on wild Pokemon or trainers, but you still had to work for it, in a fun way. Gee, I sure hope later games do the same for IVs and natures and don't just give you an item you can use and call it a day!
Oh…
Well, let's fix that.
For IVs, I could easily see an extension of the super training system. Like, add to the hidden super-duper training courses you unlock with a max-EV Pokemon, courses where you battle to raise your IV by some amount. I could also see a system where you gain EVs then "commit" them into your IVs- like, if you want to raise your defense IV, you train a certain amount of defense EVs then go to the super special training and those EVs get converted to a commensurate amount of IV points. I could see a system of diminishing returns- say 100 EVs gets you an increase of 5 to your IV but for an increase of 10 all at once you need like 250. Or some entirely different numbers than that.
For natures, though, given the, ah, nature of them, I could see something a bit different. Natures are based in the intersection of raising or lowering one of the five non-HP stats. Hey, what other system in Pokemon has five variations and also literally already interacts with natures anyway?
Tumblr media
Berries!! Or specifically their flavors. What's more is there's already a system of flavors cancelling each other out:
Tumblr media
So if you want an attack-reducing nature for example, you'd use a dry flavor, which cancels out spicy, the flavor associated with attack-boosting natures. The flavor mechanic has kind of fallen by the wayside in favor of color groups (which is easier to keep track of at a glance I guess) or nothing at all, but that's fine. The berries could easily be reclassed into five color groups that largely just follow the flavor groupings, or something.
The games themselves use "mints" to change natures, which is incredibly underwhelming, like a damn breath mint can change a mon's entire outlook on life. But with the flavor system in mind it's a great place to start. My idea is, you use berries to make special cakes or other similar snacks. This makes the player put a bit more work into it with collecting berries and even the most basic mixing/baking minigame, still allows them to reasonably be sold at some late/endgame facility (a really high-end bakery for sure) (or you could have a baker character who takes berries in exchange for the cakes in later games where the minigame isn't implemented because the focus is just elsewhere), and increases the variety and character that can be expressed in the item designs. For example the bitter-flavored snack could be a cuppa coffee; the bitter snack with secondary flavor sweet (weakens dry, so increases sp def decreases def… kind of one of the more useless natures isn't it) would be a heavily sweetened coffee with a big ol blob of whipped cream on it and a lil cherry. Beautiful! Though I imagine a cup of coffee with like a hot pepper floating in it would be a little weird.
This could be expanded beyond the nature-changing system as well, like basic forms of the cakes just increase friendship or even give EVs. But take two berries and some sort of special ingredient, and you'll elevate your snack to one so powerful you mon will straight up change their nature to one that likes it.
Regarding the ingredients, Pokemon already has a few groups of berries that were only used for Pokeblocks in certain gens and are useless otherwise. Like here's one right here:
Tumblr media
(Yeah some of these have uses in Go but ignore that)
But we encounter a problem searching for a second set:
Tumblr media
In one set the first berry already has a use, and the second set is very rare and long-growing. Which might suit the requirement of needing an extra-special ingredient for the nature snacks, but I dunno about it… This is a very easy problem to solve however. Just introduce a new berry… and use it as the "mascot" of the nature baking system! That is, when the player is introduced to the mechanic, the new berry is the one used to show it off. If the new berry and Cornn set is the "primary" set, this woild give the player an attack-boosting nature snack, which wouldn't be too bad as a generic tutorial nature for a player who didn't quite understand things, always helpful to hit things harder. Or perhaps you could be tasked with making the cake for an NPC.
Monstars will probably have some kind of nature-like system, but I have no idea if this would be implemented in any form, and of course the idea of working with pre-existing items is entirely irrelevant. So this was an entirely pointless exercise. But I had fun. Isn't that what games are all about?

Krenko’s Guide to Pokemon: Tyrogue Line ( Hitmon- )
Tumblr media
POKEMON SHOULD NOT WEAR PANTS.
DESIGN:
I’m fine with how humanlike this looks. I’m fine with the bands on his wrists that look like bandages, and around his waist, but he’s clearly wearing shorts and shoes. I’d much rather a design that gave the illusion of shorts and shoes, like making his hip-section very furry and giving him hooves like a satyr.  I accept the simple appearance in the early games, but it could really have used a redesign at some point.
I do love the way the side of its head looks like it’s wearing protection over its ears. Tyrogue is very clearly some kid ready to wrestle in school, and I’m totally on board with that... but actual clothes are wrong.
My other issue with Tyrogue is that it’s a male-only line without a female equivalent. See, female-only lines make sense because of how Pokemon breeding works. Sure, there’s no male Chansey, but that’s because every male Clefable, Wigglytuff, and Grimmsnarl is lining up to fertilize that egg. But with Tyrogue, there’s... nowhere for Tyrogues to come from other than Dittos.
Now, this may explain the relative scarcity of the Tyrogue, and maybe they are all the result of dittos, but it’s really weird to me if that’s the case. You’d think by now we could have a female Pokemon that could lay Tyrogue eggs the way Illumise can lay Volbeat eggs.
Tumblr media
Now, Tyrogue has three evolved forms, and the first numerically is Hitmonlee. Hitmonlee is made of kicking, and its body really shows that. It doesn’t wear clothes, it doesn’t have a head, and those leg bands stretch for super kicks.  Now, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this thing in various mythologies, the headless man with a face on its chest, but Hitmonlee’s just got eyes. It’s a pretty simple design when you think about it, but it’s cool and striking and looks like a monster that fights like a man but better.
Tumblr media
Hitmonchan has boxing gloves, a skirt, and booties. Look, I’ll get on a lot of Pokemon’s case for being too humanoid or whatever, but HItmonchan is seriously just some dude. His shoulder pads don’t even look like part of him, they look like he’s wearing them. I can’t even begin to imagine what a Hitmonchan might be that it just looks like that in nature.  Its Pokedex entry mentions it has the “spirit of a pro boxer” and while that seems metaphorical, but when you see entries like “A Hitmonchan is said to possess the spirit of a boxer who aimed to become the world champion” you have to wonder if this is one of those supernatural things like how so many Ghost pokemon are actually dead humans.
Hitmonchan is an interesting design for a creature in a video game, but it’s not a good design for a creature in a world, which is what Pokemon need to be. I just can’t accept that your Tyrogue grew up into this without you buying gloves and booties for it.
Tumblr media
Hitmontop mostly fixes the issue of inexplicable clothes. Yes, it looks like it’s wearing some sort of V-Neck leotard like a professional fighter might, but as it doesn’t pop off the Hitmontop’s body in any way, it could just be blue fur which is pretty normal in the Pokemon setting.
I don’t particularly like Hitmontop’s design overall- I think it looks too toylike, and much less badass than Hitmonchan or Hitmonlee. It feels like something you could just avoid by taking a step to the side. But unlike Hitmonchan, nothing in its design actively offends my sensibilities. It just feels more like a middle form than a final form.

EVOLUTIONS:
I mostly love the design of this evolutionary line. While HItmonchan and Hitmonlee were introduced in gen 1 as a matched set, Tyrogue and Hitmontop came in generation 2. Tyrogue is the best use of a Baby Pokemon, adding a pre-evolution to turn two previously unattached Pokemon into a branching path. They haven’t done that again since, even though there’s multiple paired lines that could really use it (most notably Tauros/Miltank and Cubone/Kangaskhan.) Also, Tyrogue evolves at level 20, but what determines its form isn’t some weird item or what time it is, but simply how its stats fall out. This means that to a novice it’ll seem random which one you get, but a skilled trainer can ensure Hitmonchan or HItmonlee (and a more skilled trainer can ensure Hitmontop.)
Also, with base stats of 455 each, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are much more deserving of getting a Baby Pokemon than things like Pichu and Jigglypuff, whose baby forms don’t do anything for gameplay but get in the way.

TYPING:
Unlike most Pokemon with multiple forms, all three of Tyrogue’s evolutions are pure FIghting type. Fighting is pretty evenly balanced offensively and defensively, and is notably super-effective against Normal and Steel types. The lack of a second type really hurts, though. Fighting is bad against six types, and that’s not something you want to see on all your STAB attacks.
STATS:
All three Hitmons are physical attackers with 50 HP and 110 Special Defense, but the rest of their stats vary.  Hitmonlee has a mere 53 defense, making it the most fragile of the three, but its 120 Attack and its 87 speed make it the fastest and most damaging. Hitmonchan has a lower attack and lower speed, but higher defense, and Hitmontop has the lowest attack and speed of all three, but a 95 defense which actually compensates for its low HP.
None of these stat arrays are particularly impressive, but they all have solid attack stats, and their high special defense means their low HP is only a problem when confronted with physical attackers. Speeds for all three are about average.

ABILITIES:
Interestingly enough, Tyrogue’s abilities are different than all three of its evolutions... but Tyrogue’s incredibly weak so there’s no reason to talk about building it.
Hitmonchan has Keen Eye (prevents accuracy loss) and Inner Focus (prevents Flinching and Intimidate) but what sells it as a Pokemon is Iron Fist, an ability that increases its punch damage by 20%. It’s not Earth shattering, but 20% on attacks is a very solid boost and Hitmonchan learns a lot of punches.
Hitmonlee can get Limber to prevent Paralysis, but nobody cares. Its other options are much better. Reckless adds 20% damage to any move with Recoil or a Crash chance. Unfortunately, Hitmonlee only has one of these. Fortunately, it’s Hitmonlee’s signature attack, High Jump Kick. Hitmonlee’s other ability takes a bit more work to use, but is even better in competetive battles. Unburden doubles Hitmonlee’s speed if its held item is lost or used.  While berries are an option, a White Herb can be forced with Close Combat, turning Hitmonlee into a potent sweeper as long as it survives that first attack.
Hitmontop has the basically useless Steadfast (increase Speed when flinching), but has the ever-powerful Intimidate, as well as Technician. With Hitmontop already being the most defensive of the three, Intimidate just makes it a bit more survivable by lowering enemy attacks. Technician increases the damage of any moves with a base damage of 60 or lower, and Hitmontop has a variety of attacks that can take advantage of this. Most notably among these is Triple Axel, a three-hit move with an increasing power of 20, 40, and 60. With Technician, these hits become 30, 60, and 90 for a total of 180 power, albeit with problematic accuracy.
Tumblr media
Art by Zilvan
MOVES:
Despite all three being physical attackers, all three use different Fighting type moves. Hitmonlee gets its signature High Jump Kick with Reckless, or can use Close Combat + White Herb with Unburden. Hitmonchan uses Drain Punch. Iron Fist bumps its attack to an effective 90, and the healing increases proportionately.  Hitmontop, unfortunately, doesn’t have any great options, so Close Combat is generally the way to go. Revenge is an option with its slower speed and Technician fixing its ‘failure state,’ but unfortunately Revenge and Technician don’t stack if Revenge activates.
Coverage comes next. Fighting type is resisted by Bug, Fairy, Flying, Poison, and Psychic, and Ghosts are outright immune.  Hitmontop’s Triple Axel is going to work just fine against all of those, even without Technician.
Hitmonlee has a decent lineup of options- Blaze Kick, Earthquake, Stone Edge, Poison Jab, Knock Off- but which you pick is really dependent on what you expect to face and what the rest of your team has coverage for. Earthquake’s the strongest, but it still doesn’t work against Flying or Bug types.  Stone Edge covers them both, but is a much weaker move. Of course, Hitmonlee could take both.
Hitmonchan has great coverage options with Iron Fist enhanced elemental punches, plus the aforementioned Earthquake and Stone Edge, as well as Throat Chop.  There’s no real right or wrong answer here, just be prepare for whatever you’re most worried about.
Tyrogue’s evolutions share a lot of utility moves. Rapid Spin, Mach Punch, and Bulk Up can be useful on any of them. For each of the three, I’d suggest a build of a fighting move, an off-type move for coverage, Rapid Spin for Rapid Spinning, and then whatever feels right to you of Bulk Up, Mach Punch, or another coverage move.
Tumblr media
Art by birdmir
OVERALL:
Despite the three Pokemon here being very similar, they each have abilities and stat differences that give them different niches, with Hitmonchan’s being the best defined. I do wish Hitmonlee got more than one attack that worked with Reckless and Hitmontop’s signature attack were stronger (triple kick still only ends up at 90 power with Technician), but overall they’re not too bad, just a bit on the fragile side. A 10 or 20 point boost to each of their HP stats would make me feel a lot better, and small stat boosts between gens is something Pokemon occasionally does.
Hitmonchan and Tyrogue wearing clothes is really dumb, though, as are the ecological issues of a species that can’t reproduce without the help of a DItto.
In the future, I’d like to see a trio of regional forms for them, granting each a second element, but different from each other. Bonus points if the alternate Hitmonchan has Protean for his elemental punches. That’d be a cool Pokemon.

Pokémon go is simply as complex as the main games, way to a hidden layer of stats
CP is one of the maximum essential values for a Pokémon, but it hides a number of hidden stats that determine how effective a Pokémon can truly be. much like the primary video games, fans have observed there are a series of individual Stats - or IVs - that act as an individual Pokémon's genes, dictating whether and what kind of a selected Pokémon's stats deviate from the norm of their Base values.
A mixture of a Pokémon's hidden Base Stats, IVs, and stage (the white bar above the Pokémon) are what dictate its CP. whilst the higher the better, keep in mind that your to begin with extremely good Vaporeon would possibly simplest be robust as it's a high degree, and could get swept apart through extra certainly robust, excessive-IV alternatives later on.
Our devoted web page explains more on how this works in extra element, and a way to discover and exploit these hidden values:

You don't should faucet each item at a Pokéstop
A rather useful time saver is understanding that you don't need to tap every unmarried object that floats up the display screen when you spin a Pokéstop. if you tap the pass at the lowest of the display screen, you'll be given each object mechanically, that is specially useful in case you need to get again to the map to show your attention to any other Poképrevent or Pokémon out within the global.
Use the 'L Throw' approach for perfect Curveballs
in addition to throwing balls inside a shrinking circle to get excellent, incredible and awesome catches - increasing your possibilities of fulfillment - you could also get a bit rapid XP on top with Curveballs, a form of trick shot that sees balls curl towards their target.
To throw a Curveball, start through keeping the Pokéball and rotating it round. when you throw, it's going to then curve within the rotation you spun the ball - if it's clockwise, then it's going to go to the proper, and if anti-clockwise, to the left.
they're tough to tug off, but luckily players recently discovered a method that lets in you to without difficulty throw them with splendid achievement. After a spin, flow the ball up the left-most aspect of the display screen, and launch at the equal top because the Pokémon. Assuming the Pokéemon didn't move or attack, it have to land and start the capture procedure. you can study more on the technique and see it in action inside the following guide:

So over the past few days I’ve been trying out EV training Pokemon in Sun/Moon on my own, not with any real guides or anything (if there’s a Smogon thread or something I’ve not seen it), and I’m trying to see if I can keep it that way at least for a bit. I really enjoy the game and it’s a really good way to fill my evenings as of current, so I figure doing this by myself will be fun.
Some things I’ve noted:
- For someone like me who doesn’t have a whole lot of time, Isle Evelup is VERY useful. I can leave guys who I don’t wanna carry around in my party while I do SOS fights to train while I’m at work, and in a day or two they’re set in a stat. It’s definitely slower than SOS fights, so if you have the time I would recommend doing those instead, but it’s not horrible by any means. And if nothing else, keeping one open will let you get a precise check for how far you’ve gotten with the pokemon you’re training via SOS and see when you can stop or how much further you need to go.
- SOS fights are absolutely fantastic for this, provided you have the right Pokemon. I’ve been using a Pinsir I caught at Poni Grove, with False Swipe (weakening move that can’t kill), Seismic Toss (set damage move for if I get debuffed too much & if I want to hurt but not too much, plus a kill move at lower levels), Thief (kill move that has decent PP), and Bulk Up/Swords Dance depending on which is more useful (stat buff to make things more efficient/safer & stall out time). I gave him a Smoke Ball (in case I have to go to areas where I might be forced to stay in a fight or can’t run, but that might stop being a problem in the future) - not sure whether there’s something a whole lot better to give him once he stops needing it, though.
- Speaking of which, Isle Aplenny is very important. I’ve been growing a lot of Leppa, Lum, and Sitrus berries in particular, because those let me deal with whatever problems might come up in the midst of SOS fights (Leppa in particular is important, as running out of PP is a problem & the game doesn’t really give you a whole lot of ethers or elixirs). Lum lets me deal with the guys who can inflict ailments (in particular confusion), and Sitrus it just a small top-up that I can use instead of potions when fighting lower level Pokemon.
- It might just be in my current experience, as I’ve only really practiced with special attackers (so therefore I’ve just looked at Special Attack & Speed EVs), but birds are apparently the fucking best for EV training:
* Psyduck is noteworthy for SpA, because he’s decently common & will nearly always call for help successfully. He’s only worth one point, but the rate of success makes him worthwhile IMO.
* Oricorio is a good alternative for Special Attack, since it’s also common & gives out two SpA EVs when KO’d, but it’s not as successful in regards to calling for help, which makes it a little slower.
* Fearow is, in my opinion, the best for Spe EVs. It’s not that threatening and is decently successful at calling for help often, and is worth 2 EVs, which is great.
* Golbat also works pretty well, but depending on where you’re fighting them, you’ll have to worry about confusion and/or poison, and he’ll just about always have Haze, which fucks with your Bulk Up/Swords Dance plans a little.
* As far as alternatives for SpA goes, I’d also give note to Haunter, who’s worth 2 EVs and can potentially call Gengar, who’s worth 3 - one of a few cases that you can regularly find in Sun/Moon, as far as I’ve researched. However, they’re Ghost types, which makes my Pinsir’s strategy ineffective against them, so maybe if you have something else that will work for this, I would recommend using them.
- I haven’t been using them because I haven’t yet bothered, but probably important to note is that at the Battle Royal you can get those special Anklet items that increase EVs for a stat when training - I will get them at some point, but for those reading I’d say that to save even more time you should try & grab them, as they’ll speed up the process more.
That’s about all I have to note for now - as far as WHO I’m training goes, right now I’m just kind of picking Pokemon I like & finding ones with decent natures and/or abilities, and then giving them basic EVs based on that (hence mostly doing Special Attack & Speed, sweeper EV sets essentially). So far, I’ve gotten a midnight Lycanroc & Kommo-o done, and I want to train up a proper Lilligant and Tsareena (and other guys, but those first) in the future. Honestly, EV Training in this game doesn’t seem too hard, you just need to put in an hour or two a day into it and it’s pretty fine.
In the future I’ll probably add more onto this.

Golisopod: The Behemoth Bottomfeeder
What’s going on world?!?  Today I’m bringing you an analysis and sets for one of my favorite new pokemon, Golisopod!
Tumblr media
Golisopod is a new Bug/Water type, shared only by Surskit and another new mon Araquanid, and such typing has it’s ups and downs, being resistant to Fighting, Ice, Steel, Water, and Ground which are all quite common, while being weak to Rock, Electric, And Flying, also common.  This guy I feel has been unfortunately overlooked due to its ability, but before we get into that let’s look at the stats:
Hp: 75   Att: 125   Def: 140   SpAtt: 60   SpDef: 90  Spe: 40
Now THOSE are stats!  Yes chances are even a rock could beat it in a race (Golem outspeeds it!) but look at those defenses!  Base 75 hp is decent enough, but coupled with 140(!) defense and 90 special defense, this beast can take hits on either side very well.  Although it only has base 60 special attack, it also has 125 on the physical side, making it threatening RIGHT away.  Oh, and did I mention it gets THREE priority moves?? ...well no I didn’t but it does, and one of those is unique to Golisopod, First Impression (more on that later).  For the moment, let’s look at its one and only ability:
Emergency Exit: Forces the pokemon with this ability to switch out when it’s hp drops below 50%.
Now this is the main reason why Golisopod got the flak that it did: an ability that makes you switch out when you really don’t want to?  Well sorta: there are times when it’d be nice to stay in, but fortunately you can pick whichever teammate you want swapped in if this ability activates, meaning potentially gaining momentum.  And with it’s massive attack stat, chances are it won’t really need to boost (even though it gets both swords dance and bulk up), so this is not as big an issue as you may think.  Use caution regardless because even though Golisopod is quite bulky, often enough it’ll be sent to the 50% range.  With all that outta the way, here are a few sets you can try!
GOLISOPOD SMASH!!!
Life orb/Choice Band/Assault Vest
252hp/252att/4spe, Adamant Nature
Leech Life
Liquidation
First Impression, Aqua Jet
Shadow Call, Brick Break, Sucker Punch
This is my favorite set, and it’s done pretty good in the Battle Tree!  EV’s are obvious: max hp for bulk, max att for...smashing things, and the last 4 are in speed just to out-speed uninvested base 40s, though you could put it in either defense and be fine.  Leech Life is a MUST on any set not only for it’s great power (Base 80 now WOO) but for its healing factor, keeping Golispod nice and healthy.  Liquidation is the next STAB, with the added bonus of possibly lowering your foe’s defense.  The next move is priority of some sort: First Impression is very strong at 90 BP, but can only be used once every time Golisopod is on the field, but it works fine since Golisopod may be forced out due to it’s ability anyway.  Aqua jet is an alternative if you want to use priority more than once, but I generally find First Impression works better for this set and aqua jet is MUCH weaker.  The last move is a toss up: personally, I’d pick shadow claw out of the three listed but it really depends on your team.  The item is also up to you: life orb if you like choices and don’t mind the health drop, choice band if just want to spam a move (First Impression would do A LOT, but then it couldn’t do anything else...), and Assault Vest for a nice buff to the special side (It actually ties with it’s physical defense provided perfect IVS).
Bulky Bottomfeeder
Leftovers, Lum Berry
252hp/252SpDef/4Att, Careful Nature
Bulk Up
Leech Life
Aqua Jet, Sucker Punch
Liqudation, Shadow Claw, Sucker Punch
Pretty standard: Use your great special bulk to tank a hit or two, use bulk up to increase the already super physical side, and go to town.  Leech Life is a necessity to heal off damage, and then throw in a priority move because it can.  Last move is personal preference: STAB, coverage, or more priority.  Use Leftovers if you want passive recovery, or Lum Berry if you’re afraid of being status.  This set needs to be played more carefully than the last, but the payoff will definitely be worth it.
All in all, Golispod is an excellent pokemon with many advantages and only a few things hindering it.  It can hit most things, but is pretty much walled by the likes of Toxapex, so be sure to have an answer for that.  Also, be aware it’s weak to stealth rock so a spinner or defogger might be useful.  And of couse, Emergency Exit can be played around with to your disadvantage, but besides those flaws Golisopod is, in my opinion, one of the best new pokemon introduced in 7th gen and is worthy of consideration on any team.  I’m The Alolan Mudkip, and I’ll see y’all next time!

Krenko’s Guide to Pokemon: Ekans Line
Tumblr media
(You know what’s weird? I couldn’t find a good picture of Ekans AND Arbok.)
DESIGN: You know, for a pokemon that’s just a purple snake, I really like these boys. Ekans has his little rattle, but the lack of fangs makes him look soft and cute, but not TOO cute because snake eye, so he just seems like a reasonable but young choice for battle. And then Arbok’s got that full hood thing going on that’s exaggerated enough to just look menacing. And the purple color, often associated with poison, really sells that these snakes are double extra venomous.
Tumblr media
EVOLUTIONS:  Ekans just has a level-up evolution at 22 to Arbok, your same low-level mid-tier pokemon as Fearow and Raticate. And honestly, like many other things, it could safely get another level, or a mega, to push it into something truly powerful. Capping out so early means there’s not much for an end-game Arbok. As with many pokemon, I’ll only really be talking about the final form mechanically because the lower forms are just weaker versions of it. TYPING: Arbok is a Poison type, which comes with resistance to fighting, poison, bug, grass, and now fairy, with weakness only to ground and psychic. Now, sure, ground attacks happen all the time, but five resistances and two weaknesses is great. That said, its STAB moves are only strong against Grass and Fairy, four types (Poison, Ground, Rock, and Ghost) resist, and Steel’s immune, so Arbok’s not getting too much mileage out of its poison-type attacks. STATS: Arbok’s stats are middling-low all around. With its highest stat being an attack of 95, a stat total of 448, a middling speed of 80, and below-average defenses, Arbok finds itself in a lower weight class.
ABILITIES:  Arbok’s hidden ability, Unnerve, prevents the opponent from eating berries. This is so corner-case and there are so many good non-berry held items that it doesn’t matter. Its secondary ability, Shed Skin, which gives a 1/3 chance of healing Burn, Freeze, Paralysis, Poison, or Sleep every turn. This is an entirely reasonable ability that I would never complain about, though healing Poison is a bit less useful on a Poison type, which is immune to the Poison status effect from any source other than Salazzle.
But none of that really matters because Arbok has Intimidate, which lowers the opponent’s attack stat by 1/3 as soon as the Arbok shows up. This ability is so good they had to alter a handful of other abilities to grant immunity to it. It supplements Arbok’s defense enough to let it usually survive a physical hit (especially when it resists five types), and it can make Arbok a reasonable switch-in to catch attacks. While Arbok’s stats are only so-so, cutting an opponent’s stat down can be a great equalizer. MOVES: The first check for most pokemon is their STAB Attack. As a physical poison type, Arbok has two that matter: Poison Jab at 80 power, 100 accuracy, and 30% chance of poisoning, and Gunk Shot, at 120 power, 80 accuracy, and the same 30% chance of poisoning.  It might seem as though both are reasonable-  a 20% miss chance can be deadly- but Arbok’s real special move makes Gunk Shot the clear winner.
Arbok is one of a select few pokemon that can learn Coil, a non-damaging move that increases Attack, Defense, and Accuracy by one stage. This increases its ability to take physical attacks,  increases Gunk Shot’s accuracy to over 100, and of course increases the damage of physical attacks.  With Intimidate and good resistances, if Arbok gets off the opportunity to Coil a few times it can become a serious threat. Leftovers/Black Sludge can help with longevity here.
After that, Arbok doesn’t have any real utility moves, but it gets some good raw damage options and type coverage. While Steel, Rock, and other Poison types will resist Gunk Shot, Arbok can learn the Super-Effective Earthquake, which has been one of the best moves in Pokemon since Red and Blue. For move four, it’s just either Aqua Tail for ground types or Sucker Punch for Ghost types and you’re good to go.
Another entirely reasonable option for Arbok’s fourth move, rather than even more type coverage, is to just take Glare. Originally Arbok’s signature move, guaranteed Paralysis is just a decent option for messing with opponents.  OVERALL: Arbok is held back a bit by its low base stats, but Intimidate makes anything a lot better, and Coil’s one of the better buffs in the game. The one big issue Arbok has is that it’s not really fast enough to reliably sweep: even if it Coils to full it’s still got poor HP and special defense. A single strong Special attack can take it out with no difficulty no matter what it tries.
