Daily fish fact #841
Splitfin flashlight fish!

They house symbiotic bioluminescent bacteria in two light organs right below the eyes! They can blink their lights up to 90 times per minute, but seem to blink less times with longer blinks when they locate zooplankton, which implies they may use their light organs to detect prey.

Here from Florida with a cool moth

Moth ID - FL, USA:
WHAT A GLORIOUS FIND!!!
This is the Spanish Moth (Xanthopastis regnatrix), family Noctuidae.
https://bugguide.net/node/view/26706
This moth is not from Spain, but is named for its pattern and coloration which reminded naturalists of Spanish fabrics.

May I have a review of best/worst mosaic neopets?
Mosaic is honestly not a color that I'm a big fan of, as I don't think it works on a conceptual level. Mosaics are comprised of lots of tiny pieces and parts, so making a Neopet look mosaic makes the designs look insanely busy; but you can't not make them look busy, because then they won't look mosaic. I don't think it's the worst colour out there—there's a wide range of colors and patterns, and the individuality for each pet is nice—but I don't think it's ever really looked that great. It's also lab-ray only, which makes it hard to even obtain in the first place.
One thing I will note is that mosaic was part of a new colour poll in 2019, and it came out as the runner-up. However, the Gelert they initially created has some interesting metalwork in addition to the plain mosaic. I think this is a neat touch, and something I think the colour could explore a lot more. Other than that, mosaic hasn't changed a ton—it's usually patterns or gradients with tiles and lots of colors, for better or for worse.
Mosaic was released after customization and has no pet styles, so there's no other art to talk about.
Favorite Species:
Usul: The mosaic Usul has a pretty coherent four-color palette and some very pretty patterning, which runs in bands of two to three warm colors against a cool purple base. The tiling still makes this very messy, but the tiles are at least well-drawn and properly bend around the body, giving a great sense of depth to areas like the bow and ears. Overall, pretty decent, outside of those weird pink accents on the hands and feet.
Techo: The Techo is somewhat similar to the Usul, in that it has a limited palette and has some easy-to-read patterning, making it somewhat coherent despite in the insane amount of noise going on. What I like about this one beyond that is that there's lot of different shapes of tiles being used to define areas like the underbelly and knees, and the tail design is particularly neat.
Aisha: The Aisha is not as good as the Usul or Techo, but it's still decent looking. It uses a rainbow gradient and flower-like tiling, which looks very pretty. This also means that it has a bit less tiling than other mosaic pets, which makes it a little more coherent. I do still think it's lacking definition in places (the face and especially the muzzle gets lost), but it's at least aesthetically appealing. My only major gripe is that the collar looks out-of-place; going back to the Gelert, I think some metalworking would've been absolutely perfect here. However, the collar is at least removable, so this isn't a deal-breaker.
Least Favorite Species:
Acara: I kind of struggled with whether I thought the mosaic Jubjub or Acara is worse, but frankly the Jubjub is just boring while the Acara is pretty outright ugly. The body being a mess of five random different colors only exasperates the business issue, and areas like the underbelly have outlines but no separate definition to justify them. The tiles also have some weird glass-like shading, which makes the light source very confusing (minus the default shading, which is just slapped over top of the tile shading) and, once again, makes it look even busier. And to top it all off, the eyes are honestly kind of creepy.
