Hot take: if you read "No Longer Human" by Osamu Dazai and didn't understand why he didn't get better or why he was doing things that he did, you cannot actually read and/or you're neurotypical because he describes everything in detail.

If you get upset that he is misogynistic, you did not understand what he wrote in the book.

If you don't understand why he didn't say no to things or disagree with folks, you did not understand what he wrote in the book.

If you don't understand why he was the way he was, you did not understand what he wrote in the book.

If you don't understand why he didn't save his wife, you did not understand what he wrote in the book.

This man was born when such things as the concept of mental illness, childhood trauma, therapy, and psychiatric medicine wasn't a thing yet and if it was developing in the West at that time, he was literally in Japan. Yet he was self aware and intelligent enough to know what caused his mental illness, what his symptoms were, why his behavior was the way it was, and also his thought processes and then could also explain it in detail.

That's absolutely astounding and if you don't understand that, you don't get the powerful nature of this book.

If you think this book is depressing, you don't understand how neurodivergent folks live. Many people live like that, oftentimes not being as self aware as Dazai. Many people still self medicate just like Dazai did. This isn't a dark book. It's not depressing. This is an accurate depiction of mental illness because it comes from Dazai's own life.
