Let's Talk About... Misfits - Earth A.D. LP Halloween continues to creep closer so there's no better time to feature a Misfits. This album cover of creeps and ghouls is perfect. If I had to pick one Misfits record and set aside the rest, which is an impossible task that is unnecessary, Earth A.D. would be the one for me. It's faster than the previous releases, seems a little bit more angry and still maintains all of the classic lyric hooks with less of a pop edge to it. This does not discredit the thing Misfits were so gifted for doing. It's simply not as important of a feature on this record. Earth A.D. is full of assault. There are very few of the group's sing-a-longs and Glen takes a vocal direction that's extremely brutal for his typical style. There are still a few signature sections for everyone to get involved but it would be among those struggling through the crowd. Considering it was released between Walk Among Us and Static Age it's pretty wild that they busted out this single slab of destruction and then went back to their previous writing style. Wet Leg - Self Titled LP There is a good reason a lot of people are buzzing about this record. It's an indie, pop driven, sarcastic and well put together album. Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights There was a day that I would have told you to take this record on down the road. Fact is, the exact opposite happened when I first heard this one. I can feel it in my bones. I’d have ditched under any other circumstance. Certainly younger me would not have made it through the first song. Thankfully this was an anomaly. Probably due to the passing years or willingness to listen to a friend. Twosday Tuesday. Let's Talk About... DAS EFX - Dead Serious LP (Available on Purple Vinyl or Black Vinyl) This record is a stone cold party jammer! You may know the song, "They want Efx" and the whole record is equally entertaining. It's packed with references of 80's nostalgia. If this was released outside of your time period, 1992 to be exact, or simply overlooked in the world full of hip hop, please take this as the universe waving at you to give this a listen. The Das Efx team has a lyric style that is truly their own. With a diggity dang good flow that makes me tic tac toe. Nah, that's not their lyric. They would say "it's tiggity time to get buck wild" and I agree. This record will make you smile from front to back. They "got more flavor than a pack of now and laters!" Let's Talk About... Blind Melon - Self Titled LP There are very few vocalists in the world that would grab attention more than Shannon Hoon did with Blind Melon. We first caught sight of him when featured on the Guns n Roses Don't Cry video. The world would ask, "Who is this flannel shirt wearing cat that gets to hang out with the band?". Not only would our curiosity lead us to Blind Melon but we would discover a band that we would admire and the poetry within. The band has the ability to write captivating and forward thinking riffs that sometimes march toward jam band territory but never go full scale melt down like other jam bands mistakenly over do. Blind Melon then allows the words to float over the entire foundation and it makes for one of the time periods most important bands. This album falls into my essential listening list but also lands on my shelf filed under masterpiece. Many will reference other albums but this one still remains my favorite from the band. Let's Talk About... Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Kollaps Tradixionales 2x10" Aside from being extremely difficult to explain the many variations upon the band name, Discogs currently lists 18 variations of the name, the unique emotional aspect of Thee Silver Mt Zion has the ability to bring tears to my eyes. It's not like other music is not equally emotional in direction but they often miss the mark with the required spark to physically make me turn on the waterworks. It's a rare thing, indeed. Here we typically reserve important artists for the always alternating Top 5 to express the level of importance in my musical world. With their lengthy, slow building passages, violins, group male/female chorus, sometimes spoken word, unique vocal leading voice and the overall roller coaster of despair and hopelessness they convey, ASMZ has secured a spot in my all important Top3. LP+10" It took me a little while to give this band a chance. At a glance, I had mistaken GYBE for some type of Norwegian metal band that I would "get around to eventually". Then one day around 2004-5, a friend recommended them and stated they are very mellow, instrumental and cinematic and very much like the band I was in at the time. He passed along a CD-r and it was a life changing experience for me. This band was doing everything that my mind had hoped to hear. Today we are represented with the career bookends, almost. There is an album preceding Skinny Fists but this pick two does showcase the early and current sounds of one of the greatest experiments to even record. Let's Talk About... IRON MAIDEN - En Vivo! (Live at Estadio Nacional, Santiago) 2LP If it came time to discuss my favorite live shows of all time, there is no doubt the Iron Maiden would be in my top three. As a long time fan from the early 90's, finally getting to see them perform was a dream come true. One of my first live VHS was titled Maiden England. Myself and a very limited Iron Maiden fan base aong my friend circle would watch this video many times over weekends in junior high school. So the early 90's were packed with maiden lyric discussion, songwriting debates and the almighty Dave vs Adrian guitar debate. Here we are today with another slab of live Maiden to add to the mix and the band sounds better than ever. Not every band can age this well and En Vivo showcases exactly why Iron Maiden would rise to the level of world domination that occured. I'm gonna close with a question. Let's Talk About... El Michaels Affair - Yeti Season LP I have no clue what they are saying on this record. At one point it sounded like they said "Nacho Libre '' but I can not confirm. What I can say is, this is another great example of music being the universal language because this laid back, groove based adventure has totally hooked me. Mellow horn compositions, delicate vocal patterns, though mostly instrumental, and smooth, psychedelic and pulsating rhythms build most of what you'll find here. Let's Talk About... Unwound - New Plastic Ideas LP Sometimes I will wade into waters that should be more familiar but somehow slipped under my radar. Unwound is one of those. I really enjoy the albums that have recently been discovered in my digging around. Knowing they were active in the late 80's and throughout the entire 90's totally surprised me. I do vaguely remember the band name from the era but no one ever said, "Dude, you are gonna love this." Well gang, you are gonna love this if you are a fan of things like Fugazi meets Do Make Say Think. Let's Talk About... The Smiths - Rank LP It's funny what memories we retain versus the memories that slip away. One that is very clear to me is purchasing this cassette at a pawn shop in the early 90's. Something about the cover photo resonated with me enough to grab it. At the time I may have heard the name but had no clue of the sound. Similar to The Cure, this really resonated with me in a strange way. It was nothing like my general listening choices and none of my friends would be caught dead listening to it. The songs are puny and whiney and can easily pinch a nerve unless, well, unless it doesn't. The songs are very clean, precisie, kind of floaty, if that's the right word for it. So it became one that I enjoyed during late evenings with no one around. That very cassette has held up over all of these years. Not sure what made the universe push this in front of me but it's still very enjoyable to me and it's always kind of exciting to me when it gets restocked at the shop. Danger Mouse & Black Thought - Cheat Codes LP (Available of red or black vinyl) I have been a fan of Black Thought since the early 90's when I discovered The Roots. They were opening for the Beastie Boys on the Ill Communication tour and they absolutely rocked it live. From street life to the house band on Jimmy Fallon's Late Show, the entire concept and life of The Roots is the stuff of legend. We can save the deep dive for another day because we are also teaming up with Danger Mouse. This is another person to make a massive impact on the music world. Whether you know him or not, Danger Mouse has been touching the albums in your ears for two decades. There is a massive list of related material connected to his name. It's extremely impressive. Dig it up and be amazed. Knowing this, it will come as no surprise that this is yet another stellar release on the list from both of these A+ artists. Hip Hop fans should be excited about this one.
