Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights There was a day that I would have told you to take this record on down the road. Fact is, the exact opposite happened when I first heard this one. I can feel it in my bones. I’d have ditched under any other circumstance. Certainly younger me would not have made it through the first song. Thankfully this was an anomaly. Probably due to the passing years or willingness to listen to a friend. *** Album of the Week *** Lula Côrtes e Zé Ramalho Paêbirú (1975) This is perhaps the most psychedelic album ever to come out of Brazil. Recorded in the woods in the north-east of Brazil it’s a freaky, pastoral album that has some great hooks and surprising rhythms that perfectly encapsulates the hippy vibe that was a big part of the Brazilian counterculture in the 70s and perhaps doesn’t get talked about that much. If you ever see a copy of the original vinyl you will most likely have to pay one hell of a price tag. After 700 of the original 1,000 copies were lost in a flood this has become very much a collectors item. For fans of freak folk, Pink Floyd and flower power! La Cerca - Night Bloom This is an interesting listen. It boarders on mellow indie rock with clean vocals and light waves of distorted lead. Almost as if the mix was altered it could be an attempt at shoegaze. It could also make a solid effort at landing in a post-rock genre. Still, it’s none of those and stands on its own. Pixies - Surfer Rosa From the first drum hit, this album gets me stoked. Then the opening lyric announces, “This is a song for Carol”. I can not count the hours that I’ve played this record and I’m beyond excited every time someone grabs it from the store or the website because I know what they have coming around the corner! The musicianship within the Pixies is extremely underrated, imo. Bizarre guitar patterns that some would declare as noisy, tasty and effective chord patterns that may seem simple until attempting to play them, solid bass fully present, drums that keep you excited and leaning forward, all this shrouded in the beautiful lyric harmonies between Frank and Kim. Have I praised this enough yet? I consider this one an essential album for music fans who are not genre specific in their listening.
