This was the first season for the PWHL - the Professional Women's Hockey League.
Of course, as soon as I learned it was being formed I bought season tickets. Not only because I'm Minnesotan, although I was thrilled we got one of the league's first six teams. I wanted to show support, because I want the league to succeed. And hockey is pretty much the only sport I genuinely enjoy watching, if it's live.
Attendance at Minnesota's home games has been a mixed bag. Our team just won their first home games in the playoffs, so they've been getting some more media attention, and of course there are a lot of disparaging comments about the rows of empty seats. It's easy to look at the pictures and assume the league is a failure. It may even be easy for the team itself to look into the stands and feel they themselves are a failure, although I certainly hope not. There are a lot of factors that aren't obvious at a glance.
The Xcel Energy Center is huge. Minnesota is the only team that plays its home games in an NHL arena. It's a great show of support by the venue, but that's a ton of seats to fill. Many of the other teams' home games have been selling out, because their venues are smaller - in some cases too small. Playing at the X was perhaps a bit too optimistic, but we believe in the future of the league. And there have been games when we needed the extra seats.
To start with, the X groups all the sold tickets together on one side of the arena. It keeps the energy and the excitement up rather than having everyone spread out. If enough tickets are sold, they open up more sections. There have been games where we filled the entire lower bowl of the arena and some of the seats above. In particular, weekend games have been very well attended, with loads of families and youth teams in the stands. There are plenty of men, too, in pricey branded gear that keeps selling out. I dare anyone to say our crowd's energy isn't just as high as any other event's. There are signs and props and people in purple wigs and voices as loud as anywhere. And I will never tire of seeing all the young girls in their youth team's jerseys, from kindergarten kids to high schoolers, with PWHL temporary tattoos on their faces and the possibility of a pro career to aspire to.
The attendance at the playoff games has been disappointing, with the games being on weeknights and in conflict with other local sporting events. The ticket prices are higher and not part of the standard season ticket package. And honestly, Minnesota wasn't expected to get this far with the way they've been playing in the latter half of the season. (Their comeback in the playoffs has been amazing!) But the core crowd was still there, still as enthusiastic as ever, just grouped together on one side of the arena where they can't always be seen in photos or video clips. Still loud, still proud, still there to cheer on our ladies in purple, but out of view of the casual eye. It's been frustrating to try to take pictures that truly capture the spirit of the game when you're on the crowded side, in the thick of all the energy, but facing the empty side. It's been sad to see people online judging the team (and the league) based only on photos that happen to be facing the wrong way.
As in many things, it's all a matter of perspective.
If you ever feel like you're failing, maybe you're currently in a place not best suited to you. And if you feel like no one supports you, maybe you're looking in the wrong direction.

Ableism in Hockey
[PT: Ableism in Hockey. End PT] Trigger warning: Ableist comments and language, uncensored slur. We already talk about the homophobia, misogyny, racism, abuse and bullying that's almost engrained in hockey culture. However, I don't see many people talk about the ableism that's way too common within hockey. Firstly, what is ableism?
Ableism is a form of discrimination, particularly towards people with physical, mental, intellectual and other forms of disabilities. Ableism towards those with mental illness is called sanism. Some examples of ableism include inaccessiblity, using ableist slurs (such as the r-slur), believing that disabled people are broken and need to be "fixed" or "cured", believing that people with certain mental health conditions are "evil" (ex. the evil alter stereotype towards folks with Dissociative Identity Disorder or believing that everyone with Narcissistic Personality Disorder is abusive). Ableism within hockey fandoms.
Some of you are already familiar with the "blind/deaf ref" joke. Almost everyone has made such jokes at some point (or at least laughed at one). Well, earlier today I was watching an Instagram reel featuring a league of blind hockey players. The comments, while most of them surprisingly supportive, also showed that such jokes aren't exactly harmless...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Worst part, I only saw two people take issue with these comments. TWO. Ironically enough, one of them was a referee who just so happened to actually be blind! While it's easy to assume they didn't know better (and they probably didn't, considering this joke is unfortunately way too common), it kind of serves as a reminder about how we view disabled hockey fans, players, coaches and, yes, even refs (especially those that are blind or deaf). And it's not just blind or deaf individuals being made fun of. It's also very easy to go into hockey spaces and see disability or neurodivergent-based buzzwords thrown around, such as "delusional" (or, and this is the only time I'll say this willingly, "delulu"), without the people saying it even realizing the harmful affects it could have on those who do genuinely experience delusions or psychosis (such as those with schizophrenia).
Ableism within the sport itself.
Within hockey, some youth organizations still use the m-word (shown below so people know what I'm referring to), despite it being considered an offensive term (and even a slur to some) towards people with dwarfism. In 2020, Hockey Canada dropped the term, but some organizations still use it, including USA Hockey.
Tumblr media
Ableism by the players is also something we should address. In 2022, the Boston Bruins signed Mitchell Miller, a player who's infamous for bullying a black disabled teen (CW: Uncensored r-slur, brief detail of physical violence and unsanitary actions). He was eventually released two days later after backlash from fans (though the contract didn't end until February), however it was not a good look for Boston. (Man, ableism and racism. Talk about a double whammy). Earlier this year, a video surfaced of Carson Briere and a few other individuals pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down the stairs; the wheelchair was severely damaged and had to be replaced. Not long after the video surfaced, Mercyhurst Hockey cut him from the team. Both of the above mentioned have since signed with a team in Slovakia.
And this isn't even getting into the likelihood of ableist slurs being used on the ice. Lastly, many hockey arenas are still inaccessible, with many disabled fans unable to enter access in some, getting accessible seating is a hassle and many unable to buy tickets due to high prices (something that lots of disabled folks have issues with in many events.). Crowds and noise at venues can also be overwhelming to those on the autism spectrum (Like me!) and unfortunately not many hockey arenas have sensory rooms (However there IS some improvement being made on this end!) And unfortunately, watching from TV might not even be an option for some folks, as digital ads have also raised concerns about potentially causing seizures in photosensitive folks.
Disabled folks are considered an afterthought when it comes to fun events such as sports.
That may seem like an exaggeration, but unfortunately it's not. Disabled folks are always viewed as an afterthought in the world, and whenever basic accessible features are requested, they're told to "grow up snowflake" or that the "world doesn't revolve around you". And sports is no different. As the above show, disabled folks aren't taken seriously, especially when it's so easy to see blind and deaf folks become the butt of jokes when making fun of refs, mockery of addiction (alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, drug abuse, etc). And the worst part: Almost nobody is talking about it. Not until not anyway. We discuss the misogyny, the queerphobia and the racism. But we never talk about the ableism within hockey culture. Well, now's the time.

Skateboarder Heili Sirviö is making history for Finland at the Paris Olympics this year as the youngest athlete to ever represent the country.
At 13 years old, Heili punched her ticket for the Olympics after placing seventh in a qualifying event for the Women's Park event in Budapest earlier this year. The Olympic competition will be held on 6 August in Paris's Place de la Concorde.
The Finnish Olympic Committee told Yle earlier this month that Sirviö's selection was discussed extensively before the decision was made. Typically, the Committee does not allow athletes so young, but an exception was made in Heili's case.
This was based on the fact that the Finnish skater has spent the last two years touring international competitions with other skaters going to Paris. Therefore, the Olympic competition is nothing new for Heili, just another step in competing internationally.
In competitive skateboarding, it is not unheard of for athletes to be quite young compared to other sports. While boxing and gymnastics have age limits of 16 years at the Olympics, there is no such restriction in skateboarding.
Young people have also been quite successful at the sport in the Olympics. Momiji Nishiya won a gold medal for Japan in the Women's Street discipline at 13 years old at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the first time the games included the event.
While the sport skews youth-heavy, there are a few outliers this year such as 50-year-old skateboarding veteran Andy Macdonald representing the United Kingdom in the men's division.
At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Lizzie Armanto represented Finland in the Women's Park event, placing 14th.
Australia to California to Paris
As part of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) rules, she will be accompanied by her father Fredu Sirviö, a former professional snowboarder.
"It's been a long journey, and we're really excited to get there. It's our first Olympics but hopefully not the last. We are going there with great enthusiasm and positive excitement," said Fredu.
The whole Sirviö family is aware that the 13-year-old Olympic athlete will receive special attention.
"I think Heili herself enjoys the spotlight very much, and that's enough for me," Fredu said.
Tumblr media
Good luck!!!!
The Sirviö family moved to Australia around seven years ago and both Heili and her sister Miila Sirviö have Australian citizenship as well as Finnish. Skateboarding initially began for the duo when they took their father's skateboard out of the closet during Covid lockdown in 2020.
"I liked to learn new things and develop my skills," now 13-year-old Heili told Yle.
Two years ago, the Sirviö family relocated to Vista, California, near San Diego, to help the girls become world class skateboarders.
"I realised that this could really be something, as Heili's tricks got quite close to elite standard after only a couple of years of skateboarding," her father Fredu said.
Both Heili and Miila are prolific skateboarders, placing first and second, respectively, in the Finnish Vert Skateboarding Championships earlier this month.
Eyes on the prize
Heili is clear when it comes to her goals for Paris.
"I want to bring home a gold medal," she told Yle with a broad smile.
Heili's coach Jussi Korhonen is more moderate, but he also said his goal is a podium finish.
With good luck, he told Yle that is realistic, as Heili has already managed to break through at the elite level. Her support team also plays a big part in his success, and he described Sirviö as ambitious and systematic in working towards her dreams. As she gets older and more experienced, her originality grows.
Korhonen noted that this kind of originality is important to skateboarders, as they want to leave their legacy by creating new tricks and approaches to the sport.
"Of course, Heili hasn't had time to do half of that in four or five years, but she certainly wants to leave her mark on skateboarding history.," Korhonen said.

some details in All Tomorrow’s Parties ( My Friend ):
Tumblr media
• The 16-day Asian Games mentioned in the film was the 11th Asian Games in 1990, which was held in Beijing. It is the first comprehensive international sports competition hosted by China. This event served as a precursor to China's further development in the sporting arena.
"Have you donated today?" was a buzzword at that time. In order to hold the Beijing Asian Games, tens of millions of people across the country donated a total of 1/10 of the total investment.
• The first person Li Mo ( Wang Yibo ) contacted after returning home was Brother Chen. After meeting his "friend" ( Zhou Xun ) Li Mo, a young literary and artistic young man, went to get a haircut. Li Mo is portrayed as this wandering poet and there is a poem made by him that is read in the film :
Blue Train by Li Mo
On the night, dark as the unfathomable ocean we board a blue train home. The youth, and his girlfriend, are sending the big guy home. Only the blue train can take them there. He says, is is his land of Gold.
This could pertain to China’s railway station beginnings in the 90s. Since Li Mo is well travelled, he may have seen it.
• Li Mo’s character may seem like having ( Zhou Xun ) as his friend is an exaggeration. that he only assumed it because he has poor social skills. But towards the end, she did not make a fuss that the ticket was given to him. She went inside knowing that Li Mo was there to accompany him.
• the movie being played in the last scene is called 400 Blows.
Francois Truffaut's "The 400 Blows" (1959) is one of the most intensely touching stories ever made about a young adolescent. Inspired by Truffaut's own early life, it shows a resourceful boy growing up in Paris and apparently dashing headlong into a life of crime.
youtube
The Director of the Short film had this to say about Wang Yibo :
To be honest, I've only heard the name Wang Yibo before, I don't know him or how much energy he has. I watched Wang Yibo's after knowing it was him. In some videos, his temperament is very cool. I was a little worried about him at first as he is not the same as the role. But after the first meeting, I felt at ease.
He was very polite, very humble, and then very stable, which gave me a lot of space and confidence to put my understanding and imagination of this character on him. Directors all want actors in this state. It is experienced and professional, but at the same time it is always the attitude of doing it for the first time, it is a very comfortable cooperation.

Story Assignment / Did You Prevail?
Peter Handke’s memoir A Sorrow Beyond Dreams is notable for its brevity and also the brevity of its composition. In less than 90 pages he examines his mother’s suicide, sketches something of her backwoods youth in interwar Germany, sympathetically evokes her enervating middle years (child-rearing, poverty, spirit-killing monotony), then analyzes her life’s coda—a time of curiosity, social reinvention and zest. By elevating her consciousness, she apparently collapsed all that’d come before, made it ugly and non-negotiable. To quit the past required a whole bottle of sleeping pills.
Handke’s analyses is forensic, delicate and rational. You believe he loves his mother not from sentimental asides or fantasies of saving, but by his devotion to the truth, which, given his mother’s unhappiness and pettiness and lack of education, has a nearly universal meaningless. What did her death mean? Who could it possibly affect?
Anyway, he finished the book in two months, and included the odd occasional all-caps abstraction. When I’m walking around at night I sometimes think, “NEAT, CLEAN and JOLLY,” or “WEAK-KNEED,” or “GREAT FALL,” or “MEANWHILE HAD GONE OUT OF EXISTENCE,” and know I’m occupied once more with my little sorrow beyond dreams.
“Man,” I texted Mackie, “I’ve been awake since 3AM. It’s 5 now. Jerked off 2x. No sleep.” I hit send before deciding my intentions. I don’t think we know what to say to each other, but we’re always saying things to each other, and it’s never, “Was thinking about you, how great it’d be to be turn over and just talk to you in the dark.” I don’t know if he’d actually ever say that to me—seems wishful. Mackie is not very nice and he lives very far away.
Went to a party on Wednesday. I wore dark blues down to my briefs, and navy small shoes with no arches. I got off the train hobbling and talked myself up in the alleys on the way to the two-story condo where we’d celebrate night 4 of Hanukkah. I’d slept with the host, obviously, and one or two friends in attendance. I’m not really a part of this group, I’ve just—I guess I’ve penetrated it, as they say.
I had rehearsed convos in my head. I had slammed a blue-bottled beer before getting on the train and felt woozy but competent, just a little in pain. Everyone there seemed leagues more jovial and put together and interesting and adult than me, I felt, immediately on opening the door. I had forced an earring in a closed hole and my left ear was berry red and throbbing—a part of why I felt so juvenile. Grown men don’t just press past the barrier of healed skin. It made a small gratifying popping sound as it cleared the other side and felt hot-hot, and it’s a sensation I’ll repeat (it’s a sensation writing repeats).
For a while, to get out of the heat and press of my successful and attached gay cohort, I hung out with the only female in attendance, Bernice, a noted fag hag (I believe she condones this use), and stroked a paw of the small dog seeking refuge in a pillow-pile beside me on the over-plush couch. Because I felt lonely, I wanted to ask, “Bernice, why do you exclusively attend these kinds of events? Why do you exclusively attend events where you’re shunted to an oversized couch with a social incompetent? What’s the deal with you and gays?” Instead we talked about our jobs. This inadvertently dimensionalized Bernice for me.
“I’ve done so much bullshit work for the last decade,” she snorted, “and in 2022 I got hired as a special projects consultant for an absolutely broken renewable energies firm.” She explained the firm’s stultifying snags on ESG semantics, its optical insecurities, how it quavered on progressive politics, waffling on bygone  talking points. “I was loaned out,” said Bernice. “Um, so my firm actually salaried me. I could say whatever I wanted in the vaunted halls of the executive suites and the buffet boxes of free sports tickets and the Connecticut mansion parties. And I called them cowards. I really busted their balls for weeks and weeks—on op-eds, white papers, social media posts, ‘the state security alignment’—I’m sorry, I mean the police—and also, who are those tadpoles in DC—”—“Lobbyists,” I breathed—“Lobbyists,” she breathed back, “I called them out on how based and cucked and knob-choked they all were on the teeny fucking penises of the DC lobbyists. I wanted them to feel so small and stupid and dry and bad, for what they were making, which was millions every day, millions on millions, while I—finally—afforded a Kia. I hate feeling poor. At our age? Don’t you?” “Yes. I hate it.” “Right. So I made them feel poor, a little bit.”
During this peroration I got trembly and blank, excited and critical. I let this leave me. I said, “Did you prevail?” and Bernice said, “The fuck no. But god damn! I made sixteen-kay in November. You ever make that much in a month?” “No, never, and I never,” I said. I told her how had I finally afforded a new car by taking a job at a bank. Bernice has also studied literature. (I don’t think she keeps a blog.) We cheersed saying, “Eat the rich,” [clink], “Eat the rich,” and that felt very correct. The dog licked my palm, perhaps mistaking our intent. “We’re not gonna eat you,” I said, and the dog chittered his teeth at me.
Later that night I made out with a guy name Andrew (such an indelible millennial name), and then never talked to him again though we’ve texted somewhat since.
Mackie asked what I was up to that night and I sent him a couple photo and video updates that were greeted by silence. The next AM he was sending obscure memes again. Out of jealousy, I told myself.
It’s odd—I didn’t really solve why Bernice exclusively hangs out with thirty-something gays who ignore her. (My last theory is that she enjoys recreational drugs: her gay friend group is really into those.) Past the obscure memes, I solicited Mackie for some explanation. He unimaginatively offered misogynistic trash, with the line, “Can’t pull but likes to watch.” Typing that up makes me feel very late and very closed-minded to the asexual community, although assuming Bernice is asexual feels as offensive as assuming she hangs out with queers for ketamine. Sometimes our friends, our networks, our densest and most particular milieus spring upon us by accident. And yet—she’s consulted for a living. She made $16K in November. She’s canny. Also clearly she hates straight rich white men. What gives?
I texted the host, thanking him for his hospitality; I texted Andrew, thanking him for his wonderful plump kisses; I texted other men who’d breeched my IG stronghold with accolades and complaints about my attention and comportment. A guy I’d “met” on Grindr and spoken to in the kitchen let me know I’d “rejected him” after he’d shared his album; that’d I stopped talking to him after seeing him naked. But—he was glad we’d met in real life, because he’d had the opportunity to confirm I did read books. He’d written: “When you talk, you use big words.” Embarrassed, I messaged him back saying, “I didn’t reject you. I’m just bad at Grindr. And yeah, I read books.” (Guys: the fact remains, I read books.)
I did reject him. His body repulsed me. He’d been overweight for years and undertaken marathon training, so all the skin on him was oozing and angry and stretched like taffy. Also I wasn’t that into his penis. Judging his fitness—his ripeness—his fuckability—based on something as arbitrary as cock-hardness and a sculpted torso—is the remit of the sexually unenlightened. I know! Not wanting to bang Stu because his body gave me the squick (and his body giving me the squick because of socially inherited standards of gay male beauty) drove me slightly batshit. I’d gone to Hanukkah Night 4 hoping for no part of that—hoping, indeed, for enlightenment. And still, I was confronted in the corner of the kitchen with a man who I had no intention of sleeping with, with him later asking me, “Why?” Also, I think that’s a party foul. If I’d been hideous on Grindr that’d be one thing, but I’d only been silent.
(I’d gone to Hanukkah Night 4, actually, fully with the intention of some very beautiful, intelligent man courting me, seducing me, sweetly asking if he might take me home. Mackie reminded me: “You went to a gay party hoping to get laid.” When I revisit our texts, I see that on Wednesday night, I did jokingly say, “Wearing blue briefs tonight in case I get laid.”)
Prevail in the sense of what.
I keep telling myself, if you just write in the style (or concern) of Grace Paley, you’ll manage your output better. You’ll actually write, rather than not write, which—bizarre to point out—a lot of egregiously more talented writers simply don’t do. They either don’t read Grace Paley or they don’t take her example seriously. Can’t drop the kids off at the sitter? Disappointing a union rep? Grocery store reverie? Class action lawsuit? Neighborhood defense? Teaching Zoomers dialogue? Furious about parking? Guys being complete pricks? What’s for breakfast? (“Our shrinking family requires more coffee, more eggs, more cheese, less butter, less meat, less orange juice, more grapefruit.”) Seasons shift their responsibilities [planting, watering, raking, shoveling] and finally the apartment, the car, the stoop, and [even] the park demand a graceless apology and accounting for. How do you come by these treasures?
Paley gives you freedom to remark on the banal frustrations and the relentless petty drama of existing while renting. So too of dating while maybe dating others (a grace for the gays), and of wanting to attend an alderman’s fundraiser but maybe sliding one or more of your dates there, too—a Jane Jacobs by way of Nora Ephron. Maybe I only read her young writing. Perhaps I only read her young concerns. (No: She was 63 when she published the breakfast items above.) But everything feels fresh and hilarious and condoned. “You will sorely fuck this up, surely, but the lesson of living in the city will stick.” (I wrote that last quote, not Grace Paley.)
Later, Mackie texted, “Stop being annoying and text me back.”
I sent him maybe the 81st photo of me in my underwear, haggard, glasses, brushing my teeth, and the caption, “All clear.”

NEW YORK, NY - Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) announced its expansion into Puerto Rico for the ninth installment of its Most Valuable Prospects series, set to take place in Caguas, Puerto Rico, at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza on Friday, October 11th, available globally on DAZN subscription. Universal Promotions will serve as the official promoter, with Boxlab Promotions serving as co-promoter for Most Valuable Prospects 9, presented by CELSIUS Live Fit Essential Energy. Most Valuable Prospects 9 marks a significant milestone for MVP as it brings its up-and-coming talent showcase series to Puerto Rican soil for the first time in partnership with MVP’s boxing trailblazer, the most decorated Puerto Rican champion of all time, Amanda Serrano and her manager Jordan Maldonado. The partnership, first announced in March 2024 at MVP’s marquee event in San Juan, aims to identify, sign, and develop Puerto Rican fighters with MVP. The company now welcomes 23-year-old Puerto Rican National Team star Jan Paul Rivera, 21-year-old sensation Krystal Rosado, and three-time US national boxing champion and high-fashion model Alexis “Chop Chop” Chaparro to the MVP roster.
Most Valuable Prospects 9 will be headlined by Jan Paul Rivera (10-0, 6 KOs) vs. Andy “Skeletor” Beltran (8-0, 5 KOs) in a 8-round featherweight bout for the WBC Latino regional title. Krystal Rosado (4-0, 2 KOs) and Alexis “Chop Chop” Chaparro will also compete on the main card. The event represents MVP’s expanding ventures in Puerto Rico to spotlight the island’s rich boxing heritage and identify development opportunities with Puerto Rican talent. Tickets for Most Valuable Prospects 9 are on sale now at ticketera.com.
In the main event, Most Valuable Prospects 9 will feature the highly-anticipated return of recent Most Valuable Prospects standout, Jan Paul Rivera (10-0, 6 KOs). Rivera, the 23-year-old featherweight prospect from Salinas, Puerto Rico, was a decorated member of the Puerto Rican national boxing team as an amateur, competing in over 200 bouts. His amateur accolades include winning two straight Puerto Rico Elite National Championships in 2020 and 2021, as well as the Puerto Rico Youth National Championships in 2018 and 2019. He also earned a silver medal at the AIBA Youth World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in 2018. Across his 10-fight professional career to date, Rivera has competed across the USA, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Colombia, furthering his aspirations to become a global star in the sport. He most recently took home a knockout win over then-8-0 Justin Goodson in the main event of MVP’s Most Valuable Prospects 7. He now will compete in the main event of Most Valuable Prospects 9 against Andy “Skeletor” Beltran (8-0, 5 KOs) in a 8-round featherweight bout. Beltran comes to the ring from Las Vegas, Nevada ready to test his own undefeated streak and knockout power as they compete for the WBC Latino regional title.
"Signing with Amanda Serrano, Nakisa Bidarian, Jake Paul, and MVP is a great opportunity for me to become a star, and I’m proud to be joining such a dynamic, talented team,” said Jan Paul Rivera. “Most Valuable Prospects 9 is more than just another fight for me—it's a chance to showcase my skills and represent my home in Puerto Rico. I can’t wait to put on a show for my fans at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza."
Also joining the main card will be the 21-year-old sensation Krystal Rosado (4-0, 2 KOs), the first fighter signed by Amanda Serrano. The Carolina, Puerto Rico native made her professional debut on MVP’s Most Valuable Prospects 2 show in August 2023, stunning fans with a ferocious second-round KO against Tarrethia Dixon. Rosado went on to compete on MVP’s historic Serrano vs. Ramos card in October 2023, earning her decisive second win over Hungary’s Kata Pap, before appearing in front of her home fans at the legendary Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan as part of MVP’s main card in March 2024. In front of her home fans, Rosado put on a ferocious show, displaying her championship potential against Gloria Munguilla. Rosado took home a majority decision win, which she followed with a swift knockout of Russia’s Veronika Dmitriyeva at MVP’s Most Valuable Prospects 7 in July 2024. Rosado will now make her formal debut as an MVP fighter in her fifth professional bout on Friday, October 11.
"As the first fighter signed by Amanda Serrano, I want to make my island proud and put on a show every time I step into the ring,” said Krystal Rosado. “Joining MVP is an incredible honor, and I’m excited to grow further now with Nakisa and Jake in my corner. Competing in Caguas is a big moment for me, and I’m ready to show everyone what I’m capable of. This event is an amazing opportunity to highlight the young talent coming out of Puerto Rico, and I’m thrilled to be part of it."
Alexis "Chop Chop" Chaparro (2-0, 2 KOs) also has now signed with Most Valuable Promotions and will make his return to the ring for Most Valuable Prospects 9. The 23-year-old Chaparro, raised in Ridgewood, New York, is a three-time national boxing champion who competed at both the 2020 and 2024 USA Boxing Olympic trials. The gifted Puerto Rican athlete is also a high fashion model, having worked for Versace, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, and Polo Ralph Lauren, among others. Chaparro landed a sensational first-round KO win over Daniel Augare in his pro debut on Most Valuable Prospects 6 in April 2024, before scoring a stunning second round knockout over Kevin Hill on the preliminary card of MVP’s Jake Paul vs. Mike Perry in July 2024.

Zolo! We are the Boys who Lose
I've been a supporter (fan) of the Philadelphia Union MLS soccer team since their inception in 2010. I attended my first match in 2015 after responding to a flash sale on tickets. I really enjoyed it and I attended a second game that season as the Philadelphia 76ers had an event there for their season ticket holders, which I am one. I purchased a 5 plan in 2016 and 2017 before upgrading in 2018 and finally full season in 2019.
During this time, I've seen a lot of ups and downs with this club however I remained faithful. This is a team that doesn't spend money however they have a world class academy to help develop youth players. Sports Director Ernst Tanner and his predecessor Ernie Stewart have done a good job bringing in talent to compete and change the culture of the team. Seasons tend to end in a disappointing way however overall progress had been made. In 2020 they won the Supporters Shield and followed that up with making it to the final 4 of CONCACAF Champions League in their first trip in the tournament. In 2021 a badly depleted team held their own in the conference finals against eventual champ NYCFC. In 2022 they won the Eastern Conference and lost in penalty kicks to LAFC. Last season they went backwards in many ways and while they made the postseason, they caught a few breaks to get in. I don't see that happening this year and the problems with the club go back to last season. Defense, which previously had been a strength has become virtually non-existent. Despite having a roster that can compete with just about anybody in the league can't score. In addition, this team has a problem playing the entire game. Coach Curtin has become complacent, which is unfortunate, because I think he's a good coach. The sad truth and I hate to say it is that this team has no heart. I chose not to renew for this season for personal reasons however this team is becoming an embarrassment.

Sport Venue & Event Management Entry 2
Sustainability practice of a sports venue
The sustainability practices of sports venues such as those at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, have an increased level of importance with everyone becoming more aware of the effects of climate change. Climate Pledge Arena was named in 2021 by naming rights sponsor Amazon, though it was originally known as the Seattle Coliseum when it was first built in 1962. The venue mainly hosts music and sports events. It has been home to many sporting teams based in Seattle however it is currently home to the WNBA’s Seattle Storm, the University of Seattle’s men’s basketball team and the NHL’s Seattle Kraken (Warner, 2023). The stadium has undergone several renovations, with its most impactful occurring between 2018 and 2021, which was overseen by construction company Mortenson. Francis et al. (2023) suggest there has been a recent focus on environmental performance concerning stadium design and construction with countries and mega events committed to reducing carbon emissions. Sustainability was maintained when renovating through the use of existing materials. This included maintaining the original roof, and rescuing the curtain wall and windows systems of the stadium (Obando, 2021). To be the most responsible, progressive and sustainable arena in the world is the goal of Climate Pledge Arena. The arena was the first in the world to be awarded the International Living Future Zero Carbon Certification (Climate Pledge Arena, 2024).
Tumblr media
Many of the key attributes of sustainability are met by Climate Pledge Arena such as waste management, efficient lighting systems, public transportation, and water conservation. Their waste management has received TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) Platinum certification with over 90% of arena waste avoiding landfill executed with a focus on fan engagement and having the right sized bins and colour-coded bin bags. Debrah et al. (2021) explains the last decade has seen more youth have a greater awareness and positive environmental attitude, without the practical experience in how to best put waste management into practice. These simple colour codes are an easy way to engage the younger fans to practice sustainability. The lighting at Climate Pledge Arena is 100% powered by renewable energy with on-site solar panels on the roof and off-site locally purchased wind farms. Public transportation is the preferred method to reduce the carbon footprint of attendees so transportation is free to publicly ticketed events and games in the hope 25% of patrons use this. Climate Pledge Arena also has leading water conservation practices with ultra-efficient showers, waterless urinals and a rain-to-rink system where a 15,000-gallon cistern captures water from the high levels of rainfall in Seattle, which is used to create ice for the rink. Xu (2020) states the importance of rainwater utilisation systems in sports venues with the obvious scarcity of water resources. The arena has accomplished Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification (Climate Pledge Arena, 2024).
