This morning I read an article about N.K. Jemisin in The New Yorker. The only person to have won the Hugo Award (the best science fiction or fantasy book of the year as selected by the members of the World Science Fiction Convention) for all three books in a trilogy.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/01/27/nk-jemisins-dream-worlds
It shouldn't matter, but does, that she is a black woman. Part of the article is about the difficulties she, and authors before her, had getting published and recognized for their work because of the perceived inherent bias of the established mainstream. As if the creative process is secondary to where it is taking place.
I was thinking about this as I showered this morning and a phrase popped into my head. I wish I could give credit to whoever first coined it but I don't know who it is. If you're "different", going through issues people may not understand or living a lifestyle they aren't. "People who care don't matter and people who matter don't care."
In true freeform fashion that thought took me to the early weeks of my relationship with Sandy. When I was younger I was a bit of a mess. Poor impulse control, no real direction, no plans for the future. I was in real jeopardy of getting kicked out of the Navy.
One evening Sandy and I were sitting in her car talking about some of the steps the Navy was going to make me take. Not pleasant steps but necessary steps. She told me something that's stuck in my mind ever since. She told me that she'd stay by my side through it and let me know WE would get through it. That's the hinge my life turned on.
She cared and I mattered. That was the first time, since my childhood, that I saw what unconditional love meant. Though it would take me a while to figure out what I was feeling I'm pretty sure that's the point I started loving Sandy.
To this day I don't know if Sandy saw that I was completely moldable or that she saw something in me I was blind to. It really doesn't matter. The present we're in was born in that moment of acceptance. People who matter really don't care about anything except who you are. Who you appear to be doesn't mean anything to them.

CBD and the immune system: 4 ways CBD oil provides a virus-season boost
Tumblr media
For CBD and the immune system, this article covers four ways in which CBD oil may support immune health
The endocannabinoid system is known to play an important role in regulating immunity and scientists consider it to be one of the “gatekeepers” of the immune system.1 The endocannabinoid system includes receptors known as cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2) as well as the endogenous cannabinoids anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) and enzymes that influence the production of these endocannabinoids.
There’s scientific evidence that cells of the immune system express both CB1 and CB2, although CB2 concentrations are higher than CB1.2
How CBD and the immune system interact
Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive component of Cannabis sativa, is a phytocannabinoid that acts on the endocannabinoid system and may have the ability to maintain a balanced and healthy immune system.*
Transient receptor potential vanilloid 2 (TRPV2), a protein that facilitates the communication of cells with their extracellular environment, plays an important role in healthy immune system function.3 CBD activates TRPV2 and also influences other transient receptor potential (TRP) channels involved in supporting immunity.3*
Hemp-based CBD oil may have both direct and indirect mechanisms for maintaining immunity.* This article covers four ways in which pairing CBD and the immune system may support immune health.
Increasing natural killer cells*
In animal studies investigating autoimmune health, CBD oil from hemp has been shown to balance the immune system by reducing the activity of T cells, B cells, and both T helper and T cytotoxic lymphocyte subsets.4* However, outside of an autoimmune arena, CBD supports the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, a type of white blood cell.4*
NK cells are a major player in the body’s response to the presence of viruses.* CBD also supports the activity of natural killer T cells, which share properties of both NK cells and T cells.* In vitro studies have shown CBD has actions of interest to people who want to maintain immune health in the liver.5*
Supporting a healthy inflammatory response*
CBD is well known for its ability to maintain a healthy inflammatory response.* In animals, CBD supports a healthy inflammatory response in the lungs.6* It also improves lung function in mice exposed to a lung irritant.*
In one study, CBD enhanced markers of healthy lungs such as decreased total lung resistance and elastance, leukocyte migration into the lungs, myeloperoxidase activity in the lung tissue, and protein concentration as well as maintenance of healthy levels of cytokines (TNF and IL-6) and chemokines (MCP-1 and MIP-2).* This could potentially assist with respiratory function.*
Maintaining a healthy gut microbiota*
A large proportion of the immune system is located in the GI tract, where there are large numbers of organized lymphoid tissue and scattered innate and adaptive effector cells.7
The gut microbiota, the collection of organisms — good and bad — found in the intestines play an important role in helping the body have a balanced immune response.8
Excessive inflammation in the gut can lead to intestinal permeability, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and an impaired intestinal immune response.9,10 One way the body counteracts this is through the endocannabinoid system. 9,10
Like endogenous cannabinoids, CBD also has been found to support a healthy intestinal  inflammatory response in human trials.11* The key message here is that keeping the gut healthy supports overall immunity.*
A calming effect during everyday mild stress and frustration*
Ongoing psychological stress is linked to a decline in immunity.12 CBD is involved in a healthy stress response.*
Unlike endogenous cannabinoids, which work on the CB1 receptor, CBD supplementation leads to direct activation of the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor.*13,14 CBD stress-relieving properties are also related to its ability to modulate cerebral blood flow in brain regions involved in anxiety including the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus and cingulate cortex.15*
In human trials, CBD was found to reduce mild stress in people giving a speech.* For example, researchers observed the effects of different doses of CBD and placebo in 57 healthy male participants performing a simulated public speaking test.16* In this double-blind study, subjects were given oral CBD at doses of 150 mg, 300 mg, or 600 mg or a placebo prior to the public speaking test. Compared with the placebo, 300 mg of CBD led to the subjects being more calm and relaxed during the speech.

Spitfire Audio and associated London label SA Recordings announce availability of HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS sample library and album namesake
Spitfire Audio and associated London label SA Recordings announce availability of HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS sample library and album namesake
Tumblr media
Spitfire Audio is proud to announce availability of HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS — a sample library comprising an extension of the sound palette of Berlin-based electronic music composer and performer Hainbach’s musically mind- blowing Landfill Totems concept album simultaneously released on SA Recordings, the London-based label owned by the British music technology company, allowing access to a truly unique world of one-of-a-kind, bespoke sounds expertly curated by Hainbach himself from long-forgotten, now-obsolete test equipment collected from nuclear research labs, grandfathers’ sheds, and scrap heaps, completely repurposed and given a new lease of life as instruments, meticulously recorded and processed further before being presented in Spitfire Audio’s award-winning, easy-to-use plug-in as many morphing and evolving sounds suited to techno and ambient music production, as well as cutting-edge film scoring — as of April 8… Berlin-based electronic music composer and performer Hainbach (a.k.a. Stefan Goetsch) creates shifting audio landscapes living on the experimental edge of electronica, championed by British independent print and online music magazine The Wire — widely renowned for its coverage of a wide range of global alternative, underground, and experimental musics — as “...one hell of a trip.” The music itself is an abstract yet visceral experience, fashioned from esoteric synthesizers, test equipment, magnetic tape, and idiophones — instruments that totally vibrate when struck, shaken, or scraped. Straddling studio to stage, Hainbach’s immersive live performances are also admired, manifesting more recently through his YouTube Channel, where he has amassed an ever-expanding loyal following, sharing his experimental journeys and expertise with wider audiences.
Appropriately, the Landfill Totems project started life as a performance installation at Berlin’s PNDT — a new art gallery whose purpose is to provide a space for culture and creation, for presentation and appreciation of art in all its forms, expanding exponentially into a full album and accompanying sample library recorded at Patch Point, builders and sellers of unique instruments in Kreuzberg-Berlin — much more than a standard store on account of offering residencies to promote community and education through a free booking room filled with unique synthesizers for everyone to play. Hainbach himself puts it this way: “What I love about Patch Point is that it is a place for those interested in sound and music itself. You don’t go there to buy a box with 999 presets that will make you sound like the industry standard; you go there to find something that speaks to you. You pick up something that will start an intimate process of music creation, and it will sound like you, and only you.” Subsequently stacked into three monolithic towers resembling totem poles, each piece of equipment thereon was carefully chosen by Hainbach for its distinctive tone generation and modulation capabilities before being wired together much like a modular synthesiser. Says the electronic music composer and performer eventually lending his notable name and one-of-a-kind, bespoke sounds to Spitfire Audio’s HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS sample library: “Each tower of equipment took the form of a lifelike statue, and suddenly all these faces started appearing in the machines. They made massive sounds and unfamiliar noises and I thought, ‘I want these to be heard — to sing again.’”
As anyone observing those assembled anthropomorphic figures could conceivably concur, a deep appreciation and affection for the engineering technology of the past is apparent — totally unique machines assembled for one final swan song. Ultimately upcycled and redesigned as pillars and shrines, these totems act as a commentary on the environmental cost of progress; what was once the pinnacle of technology quickly becomes unviable and destined for the scrapheap — if not for the intervention of Hainbach, creating beauty from that which is thought to be obsolete. Carefully chosen to create this towering collection is medical, telecommunication, and scientific research equipment, vintage sound-testing devices, a Nuclear Instrumentation Modular, an outmoded medical signal generator, a mixer previously used by the Stasi — the state security service in former East Germany, and a Brüel & Kjaer 1613 bandpass filter creating the hi-hat, bass drum, and watery sounds.
Simultaneously released alongside Hainbach’s musically mind-blowing Landfill Totems concept album on SA Recordings, Spitfire Audio’s sample library namesake sees those same machines completely repurposed and given a new lease of life in an unforeseen capacity as instruments, producing unpredictable sounds from another world — wide ranging from eerie morse code bleeps and comms signals to flickering bass pulses; deep drones and ominous pads to grainy textural rhythms; visceral clicks, industrial drum hits and loops; and electromagnetic noise to heavenly humanoid ‘voices’. Virtual instrument brilliance is guaranteed as everything is meticulously recorded and processed further as dystopian sounds presented in Spitfire Audio’s award-winning, easy-to-use plug-in providing access to truly one-of-a- kind, bespoke creations, impossible to recreate otherwise.
On the face of it, then, the plug-in provides 40 presets split into four sections: Kling — presets containing elements from all other sections, with a huge range of textures available to explore using the mod wheel; Klang — tonal sounds, from evolving pads to pulsating drones; Knarz — textural and effects-style sounds, from watery to alien-like; and Krach — percussion and drum hits, as well as time-machine loops and patterns. Innovative inbuilt effects and controls provide a wealth of self- explanatory sonic possibilities to drastically control and manipulate each of the presets, including REVERB, DELAY, ATTACK, RELEASE, DISTORTION, and STRETCH, while the dynamics fader controls the processed signal to offer a spectrum of sounds within each preset — velocity-sensitive themselves for varying tones. “Just press one note, and you get a whole spectrum of emotion.” So says Hainbach himself, ending on a high note. As a sample library of stark sonic contrasts — from harsh, futuristic, and dystopian to beautiful and emotive sounds from another world, HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS is an invitation for musicians and producers to reimagine, recreate, or completely pull apart the sound world of an artist like no other to facilitate their own artistic vision. Indeed, it is perfect for creating tension, suspense, and beauty in any musical setting — from electronic tracks to hybrid film scoring or abstract sound design... and all without breaking into a broken bank balance-induced sweat! HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS is available as an AAX-, AU-, VST2-, and VST3-compatible plug-in supporting Native Instruments’ NKS (Native Kontrol Standard) for Mac (OS X 10.10 - macOS 11 minimum) and Windows (7, 8, and 10 — latest Service Pack) that loads directly into any compatible DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for an RRP (Recommended Retail Price) of only £29.00 GBP (inc. VAT)/$29.00 USD/€29.00 EUR (inc. VAT) — from here: https://www.spitfireaudio.com/shop/a-z/hainbach-landfill-totems/ (Please note that the first 1,500 purchasers of HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS will each receive a limited-edition Landfill Totems cassette album for free.)

History of Gaudess
The Gaudess® brand has been through many phases since its inception in 2000 when my sister, Michele Goodbread, started the company. My sister always had a creative eye for making beaded jewelry, and we appreciated receiving her baubles as gifts. She eventually started selling her creations, and her organic, BOHO chic look became a hit.
Michele decided to go to the Henri Bendel’s “Open See,” where new and emerging designers audition for a trunk show to hopefully be carried in the store. Serendipitously, Oprah’s (then) Network, OxygenTV, was filming at the scene and followed my sister and a couple other designers throughout the audition process. Michele landed a trunk show! OxygenTV also did a follow up on her progress 6 months later when Michele hosted a trunk show at Henri Bendel as a fundraiser for ovarian cancer research (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pnvy9XLywPs). We always give thanks for Oprah’s network for the official launch of Gaudess®!
By then, Michele was enrolled in graduate school and juggling the company. I was a going through a divorce, and started helping my sister with trunk shows, marketing, collections and promotions. We were really kicking ass! She managed to get a ring to Patricia Field, who put it on “Charlotte” (Kristin Davis) on Sex and the City. Shakira wore several Gaudess rings during her performances on the VHI Video Music Awards. Michele personally gave jewelry to celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Lenny Kraviz, and Erykah Badu to name a few.
In 2007, Michele started practicing medicine as a physician assistant and handed the company over to me. It was perfect timing because I had just left Z!NK Magazine as Managing Director and was ready to put my big and bold spin on Gaudess. I used more Swarovski crystal beads and pushed the gaudy and glam style. My sister and I had so much fun over the years jet setting all over with Gaudess. As single moms, we juggled school, jobs, moving, marriages, boyfriends, and pets, while building the company and raising our 3 beautiful children. There were so many good times and so many hardships. We fed off of each other's energy and love, and with the help and strength of our parents and older sister, Janine, we were able to get through it all, becoming empowered in the process. Many thanks!  Being a single mother of 2, it was a challenge for me to manage my work and my kids' activities with Gaudess, but my children are always my number one priority. I gladly made sacrifices in my life for them and would do it all over again. However, now that my children are adults, I decided it was my time to devote my energy to the company and to the tribe of women who make up Gaudess.
Up until now, I’ve sold in stores and have had amazing trunk shows in NYC, the Hamptons and Miami, with a couple of The Housewives of New York attendees.  Paz De LaHeurta of Boardwalk Empire wore my Black Fleur ring. Most recently, my designs were worn on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival by Addison Reicke, who starred in the new movie, Beguiled, with Nicole Kidman and Collin Farrell. I enjoy doing trunk shows because I have personal interaction with my customers and meet outstanding women along the way. I love their energy!
I rebranded the company in 2017 as a life style brand, while concentrating on the positive qualities of the business and the passion within me. I designed an 18k gold jewelry logo line that is a reflection of all that Gaudess embodies; a symbol people will associate as being a positive/inspirational brand. I hope women will embrace the core values of Gaudess and rock the brand proudly with their own personal style.
It was important to me, to include women of all ages in the new campaign. Being a Gaudess is about being confident and powerful, not being a skinny size 0-2, with a perfect ass and perky breasts. But, hey, if you are, rock it!! :) It’s all about being a female with an attitude!
I would like women to know when you give or receive Gaudess as a gift, it is one of the best compliments. You are a positive force in that person's life; You are Gaudess™—desired, elegant, inspirational and extraordinary.
Join me and Gaudesses around the world to raise our vibrational energy and manifest beautiful beginnings!
With love & light
- Amy
