I don't know how my brain hasn't rotted yet but I had another thought on Rohan. Specifically him and Zella. At the end of the Game, when Jameson and his uncle returned from their little heart-to-heart, Rohan and Zella have a little bickering match. The duchess implies that she has been chosen by the Proprietor to run the Game the following year. Now, you can see that Rohan gets somewhat standoffish about that and Zella states that he isn't his boss's only choice. In this scene, I'm immediately taken back to The Inheritance Games when Grayson was butting heads with Avery after he found out she was his grandfather's heiress.

Throughout The Brothers Hawthorne, where Rohan is concerned, it's implied that he's the second in command, the Factotum, the unofficial heir apparent. However, the problem is, like Grayson, he was never actually named heir apparent officially and he was still being tested to prove his worth. Unlike Grayson, he did have competition to assert himself to that position and in fact, who knows if the Proprietor would have picked him as the sole heir anyways? His boss could have easily led him on, much like Tobias did to his own grandson.

Going back to Gray, let's be clear, I honestly don't think any of his brothers expressed a want for the inheritance money; Jameson was only riling him up, Nash said he wasn't after it, and Xander already had his millions worth in crypto. The only real people who would have any use of Gray inheriting would be his mother, mostly so she could rub it in Zara's face. The competition he faced as a child with his brothers were for different reasons and it was intended to make the boys be the best, but that doesn't automatically translate to the heir to the inheritance. It was more who was going to be known as the best Hawthorne which is what made the brothers so competition oriented. And let's be honest, Gray would have been a great leader but I think what Avery ended up doing with the money helped him view things differently.

Now, reverting to Rohan again, he kept acting as if he was in control of every situation (sound like someone we know?) and tried to appear as unaffected as possible. He also challenged when he felt in question of his position, much like Grayson interrogated Avery at every turn until she ultimately gained his respect. But, that's not what Rohan's going through and maybe Gray accepted where he was at and is slowly reconvening to a place where he can be in control of his future now that the original has been torn to shreds, however, the Factotum is still in a place of shifting power. He still holds a position and has the chance to get what he's working towards but still, that might not happen. This is what could be revealed as to how he gets into the Grandest Game.

As much as Rohan can be viewed as a mirror Jameson, he also shares a lot in common with Grayson and as you can see, their stories are very similar. I think that the reason we'll be getting him as a player in TGG is because he either set out to prove himself in a different way to the Proprietor or he set out to do this for himself because he knows his worth and can achieve more by winning this game. Maybe this is his moment to actually detach from the Devil's Mercy because he realized that it was never going to give him more even after all the time he spent there doing all he could to show he deserves the position. And isn't that something we can all relate to? It's scary letting go of what you've known for so long but knowing you've proved yourself even if others can't see that is sometimes enough to move on to something better, something more fulfilling.

I am convinced that Alice poisoned Tobias (probably using something related to wheat because Jamie mentioned that somewhere in the devils mercy ) and Katherine would definitely poison her husband ( if she has one) and Zella will DEF kill the duke 👀. A/N: forgive me 😔🙏 also im getting really uncreative with the titles and just using quotes from the fic my bad guys

“You’re an idiot, you know that?” Avery scolded Jameson as they walked. She was holding him up on one side, her arm around his waist, while Zella had him from the other. The latter had made it very clear that she did not want to be there. 

He only shrugged, which made his whole body hurt.

She rolled her eyes. “You shouldn’t have raised your hand to fight.”

“But it worked,” Jameson insisted. “The Proprietor, I got his attention. He watched me, and he told Rohan to stay down. Which means-”

“He let you win,” Avery finished for him, her eyes widening. “Which-”

“Gives me a better chance at an entrance to the game, I know.”

“Do you guys always do this whole finishing each other's sentences thing? It’s weird,” Zella interjected. 

Jameson grinned. “What can I say? Great minds think alike.”

“And this mind says no more fighting strangers in foreign countries,” Avery said firmly. 

He didn’t argue back. His mind was half fuzzy anyway. Everything hurt everywhere- there was blood dripping from his temple, bruises littering his entire form. His nose was also bleeding, and he was certain that he’d broken at least three of his ribs. 

But Jameson tried not to let his mind linger on the pain for too long. He focused on staying upright, feeling grateful that he had the two people keeping him that way. He wanted to do more- he needed to get into the game. And today was the last chance he had. 

For now, though, he let them walk him up to an area curtained off, in the Lust section of the Devil’s Mercy. 

He laid down on one of the grand beds, back against the pillows, and took a deep breath. Which, of course, hurt his ribs. 

“We need to clean you up,” Zella began, surprising him. He didn’t think she cared enough. “The Proprietor wouldn’t appreciate you leaving a trail of blood across the Mercy.”

Jameson closed his eyes and let her and Avery do what they had to do. Antiseptics were used, bandages were applied, and each time someone's hand brushed against his injuries, he tried not to flinch.  

It hurt. 

But soon enough, they were finished. He didn’t open his eyes. Avery propped herself next to him, taking his hand in hers. 

“You’re the most reckless Hawthorne,” she told him gently. 

“Have you met-”

“I’ve met all your brothers, Jamie. Rest assured, you are the most reckless.” 

Jameson didn’t argue, and squeezed her hand. Avery moved forward, sitting closer to him on the bed, but still careful of his injuries. 

Their moment was interrupted. 

“Avery,” Zella blurted impatiently. “May we speak?”

Jameson’s eyes snapped open and he frowned. “What do you need to talk to her about?” But she didn’t look at him. The two women held eye contact for a few moments and Jameson struggled to tell if they were having a silent conversation with their facial expressions or if they were just staring.

But then Avery stood up.

“Heiress…” he practically pouted. 

“You’re fine. Just don’t get into any more fights while I’m gone, yeah?”

She gave him a look that promised she would tell him every detail of their conversation, and squeezed his hand one more time before walking out. Zella, of course, also had to give him one final side eye.

The room was silent and cold. To him it felt like it had been hours since Avery left, but Jameson knew it really could have only been fifteen minutes. But what was there even to talk about?

He closed his eyes again and tried not to focus on the injuries. He was alone now, no one to distract him from his thoughts and the pain that assaulted him with every breath. 

“You’re bleeding on the sheets.”

Jameson opened his eyes, but fell back when he saw who it was. 

Rohan was standing at the entrance, having pushed aside the curtain and staring at him with a certain look in his eye that Jameson didn’t like. He wasn’t shirtless anymore- an observation that surprised him. Instead, he was back in a suit.  

He didn’t even look like he’d just been in a fight. Any injuries were well concealed. 

Jameson suddenly felt self-conscious about the fact that he was sitting there on the bed alone, his face probably half swollen, and a poorly applied bandage being the only thing covering his top half. But he forced himself to look back at Rohan.

“And you care why?”

“I don’t,” Rohan said. He stepped forward, the curtain falling closed behind him. “But you’re making a bloody mess and I quite enjoy being on the Proprietor’s good side.”

He raised an eyebrow. “What does that have to do with me?”

Rohan eyed the bandages. “I’m the one who injured you. It’s my responsibility to… undo that damage.”

“Aw, how gentlemanly.”

“Shut it.”

He walked to the side of the bed, his eyes never leaving Jameson’s. There was something in his expression, something hidden under the layers of indifference. A look of concern, and some other unidentifiable tension that had been between them since the fight.

“You shouldn't have won,” said Rohan. “You’re in no condition to be in the game.”

Jameson scoffed, though it hurt his chest. “Yet you allowed me the victory.”

“I didn’t want to,” Rohan sighed. “But some things are worth sacrificing.”

“Like your dignity?”

“It’s getting really difficult to want to help you, Hawthorne.”

“I don’t need your help.”

Rohan shook his head as his eyes scanned Jameson’s battered body. Some bruises were his doing, while others were the fight he’d won before. Either way, it was clear that whatever first aid was applied earlier was not enough. And Rohan needed to clean any mess, cover his tracks.

That’s the only reason he was there, of course. 

“The pool of blood you’re sitting in says otherwise,” Rohan noted. Jameson rolled his eyes. 

“If you’re so insistent on fixing me,” he told him. “Then go right ahead. Be my guest, Mr. Factorium.”

He narrowed his eyes, but instead of arguing, Rohan stepped forward. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small case. 

“Are we just carrying around first aid kits now?” Jameson laughed. “Is that normal here?”

“Does it hurt you so much to be prepared?” Rohan asked, opening it and from it taking a roll of gauze.

Rohan set it on the bedside table and turned to face Jameson. Without a word, he reached for the edge of the bandages around his abdomen and began to unwrap them. Jameson inhaled sharply. 

He hadn’t expected that. He hadn’t expected to feel Rohan’s cold hands against his unusually warm skin. He hadn’t expected to uncover all the visibly painful injuries. And he most certainly hadn’t expected to let Rohan essentially rid him of covering his top half. 

Nor had he expected Rohan’s eyes to linger there for just a moment too long. 

“The wound wasn’t properly staunched.” The sound of his voice snapped Jameson back to the present. 

He only managed a small “oh” in response.

Rohan’s hands got to work, doing who knew what. Something to stop the bleeding, but Jameson only felt the touch of his fingertips, Rohan’s skin against his own. Pain was brought back every time he put too much pressure on the injured area, but at least that helped him stay awake. 

Maybe he’d lost too much blood, because this was strange. This was wrong. This was… Rohan. Rohan, who thought he was so much better than everyone else. Rohan, who spoke with that stupid accent. Rohan, who was the most insufferable person. 

Rohan, who made it very clear that he hated him.

And that hatred was very mutual. 

Jameson’s breath suddenly hitched as Rohan pressed a little too hard against his broken ribs. He tried not to react, but keeping his body neutral was impossible. 

“Hurts, doesn’t it?” Rohan muttered, his eyes focused on wrapping him up again. “Maybe next time, you’ll think twice before throwing yourself into a fight.” 

He managed a shrug. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a second thought in my life.”

“Clearly.”

Jameson opened his mouth to argue, but the words didn’t escape. Rohan’s hands had moved, now finishing wrapping the fresh gauze around his ribs, careful not to press too hard. The touch was surprisingly gentle and it stunned him more than any punch or tackle ever could. 

“Why are you helping me?” He asked finally. Rohan had said it was because of the Proprietor, but he knew it had to be something more. “You hate me.”

Rohan hesitated for half a second. “Hate is a strong word.”

“Is it?” Jameson pressed, ignoring the pain as Rohan tightened the wrappings to keep them in place.

“I can’t say I hate you. I’ve barely met you. You’re simply… very hard to like.”

Jameson furrowed his brow. “Right. But you didn’t answer my question.”

“I’m doing this,” Rohan explained. “Because I don’t want to get in trouble with his lordship.”

“You say that title like he’s the most important man in the world,” Jameson remarked. 

“I don’t think he’d appreciate you talking negatively towards him,” Rohan warned him.

He shrugged again, but this time it hurt. “Negative attention is better than no attention at all.”

“You’re insane.”

“I’m a Hawthorne.”

“Same difference.”

Jameson grinned despite the pain. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“You take that however you want,” Rohan sighed. His lips tightened into a line as he finished the bandaging. His hands hovered over it for a moment, before stepping back. “There, you’re all patched up.”

“Appreciated,” Jameson said reluctantly. Rohan nodded, recollecting the items into his strange, pocket-sized first aid kit and slipping it back into the inside pocket of his suit jacket. Jameson watched, keeping his eyes on every little movement. 

He nodded and began walking out, back to the closed curtain. A small part of Jameson didn’t… didn’t want him to leave? 

But before walking away, Rohan turned around. 

“Hawthorne?”

“I thought we were on a first name basis, Rohan.”

He ignored that comment. 

“Your nose is horribly swollen. You look like a blobfish.”

Jameson lifted an arm and very clearly flipped off the insufferable Brit. He simply flashed him a snarky smile before turning around and leaving. Jameson sighed, leaning back against the pillows again as his mind wandered, questioning what kind of interaction he’d just had.

Though he was confused by how the Factorium was acting, Jameson couldn’t help but smile.

Rohan was a puzzle, one he had every intention of solving

i think one of the most interesting things about the brothers hawthorne and the entire inheritance games series is this commentary on nature and nurture, like all four boys were raised by tobias hawthorne and you can see the evidence of that through how they navigate and interact with the world, they take nothing at face value everything is something to be picked apart and examined they all have these intricate little complexes courtesy of grandad of the year and they've all chosen to deal with their tobias hawthorne induced trauma in different ways and this is where we see how similar they are to their respective fathers. we see this a little with nash and xander but a lot more in the brothers hawthorne with grayson and jameson who's fathers and families we get to learn a lot more about and i like that what the books seems to suggest is that while we may be cut from the same cloth as our parents its our choices that kind of define who we are, the boys are a perfect mix of nature and nurture, at end when jameson chooses to save zella and give up the game and branford tells him ian would have let her fall we see the kind of man jameson is, like simon said he's a man with honour, he has all these little bits of ian and tobias but he's become this third better thing and when branford says jameson is more like him than his dad is that like the first time jameson's been compared to a positive adult figure lol? and the same with grayson in this book at so many points he notices the similarities between him and sheffield but those similarities are apparent in savannah as well and he likes savannah so maybe those traits aren't inherently bad just bc they come from this man who didn't want him, and again its grayson's choices at the end that make him different than sheffield. and im probably not explaining this properly but i just thought the nature vs nurture debate being "what if its actually nature and nurture" was really cool and also kind of funny coz yeah i can relate

So, taking a break from TGG-specific theories, I wanted to bring up some lingering questions that still spark my interest in TBH.

We have a code, "Ontario. Versace. Selenium." that Katharine says which stops Branford, Jameson's eldest uncle, in his tracks because apparently his younger brother, Bowen, has one card over him as stated by Branford. I wonder what that means, how we're supposed to interpret it, and how we can decode it because you can't tell me that JLB left that in for a one time occurrence. Plus, keep in mind, that Bowen is the only of the three Jameson brothers that we haven't met, he's still a mysterious persona to us. Adding to that, what was that leverage that Bowen had over him? Is it that he knows of Branford's secret child and what is the bet that Branford and him made? Is it of significance?

Secondly, we've yet to find out what actually happened in Prague, the events of that night, rather than just the secret. What led Jameson to discovering that secret? Was there a series of events that followed Jameson which we didn't get to see that were steps to getting to that big reveal? Could that solo trip of his in The Final Gambit had any impact on the current events that just haven't been discussed at length yet because they didn't have a purpose to serve at the time?

Tahiti is also still somewhat of a mystery. It first shows up in The Final Gambit and then Jameson and Avery continue using it in The Brothers Hawthorne. When did they come up with this? What is the significance of Tahiti that they chose that as their code word?

What's the history with Zella and Rohan? They seem to have an animosity of frenemies. Just how long has this rivalry been occurring? Is there potential to see it continue in The Grandest Game?

I feel like more of the stuff we see in Grayson's plot seems more obvious on how it's going to unravel in the future but Jameson's isn't. There's still a lot of mystery and maybe that's just going with the flow of Jameson's personality; puzzling, mysterious, risky, etc. Hopefully, it will all be answered over time.

Hi again. I got busy when the news came out, because of course that's how the lottery works 🙄. Also, thank you to @daisy-calloway-has-my-heart and @hathorneheiress for the notification on the card and @1989stanz for this ask. Anyways, since you guys want to know my opinion here it is.

So, Rohan... If I'm being honest, he felt more like a one and done character in The Brothers Hawthorne, Gigi didn't. Yes, you could say that there felt like something was potentially gonna bring him back in the future but not here, that's not what I thought. Because of Eve's epilogue and the mention of a plan involving Savannah, Gigi's place was basically confirmed for me just I didn't know that would entail her as a POV character, however, I am excited for that. Now, Mr. Factotum over here is a bit of an enigma for me but given the context of the Grandest Game, it does make sense for his involvement, but I'm surprised he's a POV character. Although, I do have to say I love the turned tables because last time Avery and Jameson were at his whim and now it's the other way around. I bet Jamie's gonna have a lot of fun with that.

Now, the fact this man's card is an Ace. And not just any Ace-the Ace of Diamonds. I feel like JLB wants us to truly feel like this guy is exuding power, the elite in a secretive kind of way because that is what the Devil's Mercy was-the secret underground playground for the most elite of the rich. Anyways, as my friend, @hathorneheiress, pointed out to me and thanks for the refresher-ace trumps all in a deck. That could be a hint in how good he's going to be at this game or it's just reinforcing the reminder of what kind of personality he has. However, he also has the king chess piece, at least going by the book cover because it's kind of hard to pinpoint in the silhouette card. I wonder if that might metaphorically tie back to his wishes to become the Proprietor's heir in TBH and if he couldn't get that there because of Zella, the duchess, he took this as his chance to become more.

I truly believe that Rohan will be giving us more of the view of the game itself while Gigi will be a behind-the-scenes look probably due to Savannah's preoccupation if Eve's intents prove to be quite malicious. One more thing, Slate. I have a feeling he and Rohan will be Grayson and Jameson's counterparts in this spinoff because they were shown to be their opposition in each of their stories throughout the novella. Funny enough, although I would say Slate may pose a bigger threat because of Eve until he ultimately leaves for Gigi (love how we already somehow planned that out from one interaction) Jameson and Rohan really fought it out but it was so satisfying to see Rohan get his ass handed to him, even though the boy was ready to keep going.

Also, swoon over the silhouette. If we had that for the ogs, that would have been great. Ironically I can see that being very Jameson because unfortunately, Rohan just feels like Jameson's true Brit counterpart. Cue me imagining a Cockney accent.

You know, now that I think about it, I wish JLB would release something after TGG with our og cast in silhouette cards with their chosen suit and card number or position; I already call Avery as Queen of Spades, Jameson as Ace of Hearts, Xander as Jack of Hearts, Nash as Ace of Clubs, and Grayson as King of Diamonds (for you @hathorneheiress).
