#GlobalGoals and Young People taking the Challenge: Guest Blog by Diana Muresan (CWS Incubation Lab volunteer)
Hungry For More Global Goals
2015 marks a big year in the world of sustainable development for our lives, and I had the privilege of attending a few meetings at this summit. One of the most influential meetings I was present for being the EATx Post 2015 Forum. The EAT initiative started in Stockholm and is chaired by its cofounder Gunhild A. Stordalen. EATs purpose is to create a world in which everyone is being fed healthy and nutritious meals. Not only that, food production must be sustainable in the sense that people who are food insecure can sustain themselves with limited input from other parties. This initiative also means that we will grow a wider variety of healthy foods, the pre/post production and distribution must create jobs, and it must be accessible to everyone. The main idea is that our population is growing; if we are smart about the way we conduct our agricultural business, there should be no food shortage. People should not go hungry.
The idea of global goals has been thrown around so often lately, but what exactly are they? I won’t lie to you, I had to do some research to get a clear answer, but all in all, it’s pretty simple. The global goals are the main 17 goals our world’s leaders have decided to use as building blocks to achieve sustainable development. In a more broad sense the goals strive to do 3 things; end extreme poverty, fix the climate change and fight inequality/injustice (with thanks to GlobalGoals.org for their brevity and clarification).
On September 27th, 2015 thousands of world leaders, politicians, CEOs, civil rights leaders, and others gathered at the UN for a summit on these goals. By the end of the day, the goals were agreed upon and signed. What exactly did they agree upon? 169 targets or indicators of change to apply to the 17 overall goals that will solve the three overarching problems that we are facing the most.
If hunger is so important, why isn’t it one of the main three goals? That’s because hunger plays such a huge and significant role in every single goal. Solving world hunger/malnutrition is the underlying solution to all of our problems. First, there’s inequality and injustice. Food and clean water (along with jobs, resources, health care) are not accessible to everyone prolonging inequality for those born in unfortunate circumstances. For people who are impoverished, every single day means work, either to make food or to buy food. For the most part those people in extreme poverty spend their day trying to play catch up so they are hindered from being able to grow in other aspects of their lives and get out of poverty. They’re trapped.
Last but certainly not least, we come to fixing the climate change. This comes down to a bigger picture of simply saving our planet as a whole. Growing such large quantities of food is not practical. Food only grows in certain seasons, so farmers are left empty handed when that food doesn’t grow, or if they have a bad year. Farming the soil to grow only one thing destroys that soil from being useful for any other purpose. So much natural land is being wasted because we aren’t using it to properly. What’s more? Foods that most farmers plant are simply unhealthy: Wheats, corn, potatoes, and other carbohydrates stilt the food supply toward an unhealthy, process-driven, consumptive market.
Change starts with each one of us.We must be the change we wish to see in the world. We must be mindful of our actions, help our neighbors, donate a dollar or two to an organization that helps. You don’t have to be an activist willing to tie yourself to a tree. If you are, that’s great, but most of us aren’t. More realistically, there are two things you can do; advocate and donate. I have been part of a project, 100 Mile Walk, to raise awareness and funds to fight against hunger/malnutrition and to reinforce volunteerism. This project asks people to walk a few miles, as many people from the South do everyday for survival, and to donate those miles as a sign of solidarity. It’s that simple. In just one month we have seen more than 5500 miles donated from all over the world, places such as The U.S., Kenya, The Netherlands, and others. All it takes is one person to have a desire to do some good. So start today, show your support and become involved to fight for a cause you believe strongly about. I believe that we can get to Zerohunger before 2030 and that’s why I am sending my miles to [email protected] and sending a tweet with the hashtag #hunger100 mentioning the number of miles I walked and am continuing to donate. Will you join me?
