A Cheerful Person The rural ‘Church of San Rocco’ stands in the midst of the vineyards of Brachetto d’Acqui. It was built in the 18th century in rustic Baroque style. Today it is a delicate presence in the landscape with its small polylobate rose window at the centre of the façade. The great charm of this location and the vantage point of those arriving from a distance prompted Chinese artist Zhang Enli (Jilin, 1965) to revitalise the chapel with one of his works of abstract gestural painting. Borrowing colours from the surrounding natural setting Enli created a sort of “pareidolia” (human ability to see shapes or make pictures out of randomness) transforming the veneer of the church into a smiling face, delicately blurring the architectural features of with quick brushstrokes to form a unified whole. The project began during the pandemic in a period of lockdown. A Cheerful Person Zhang Enli’s (Jilin, 1965) installation ‘A Cheerful Person’ is part of ‘Art Mapping Piemonte’. The artwork is on the façade of rural ‘Church of San Rocco’ set in the vineyards of Brachetto d’Acquia. This new project is based on the intention of the ‘Piedmont Region’ and produced with the support of ‘Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo’ to encourage the discovery of contemporary art, away from its conventional locations. The project created by ‘Fondazione Torino Musei’ and coordinated by ‘Artissima’ and its director (until 2021) Ilaria Bonacossa, called for the production of three site-specific installations by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists. A Cheerful Person Zhang Enli’s site-specific project ‘A Cheerful Person’ (2021) in Montabone, Italy is part of an ongoing project for ‘Art Mapping Piemonte’ . This art venture was launched by the ‘Piedmont Region' with the support of ‘Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo’,produced by Fondazione Torino Musei and curated by Artissima. Enli drew on the style of his gestural paintings for the exterior of the 18th-century ‘Church of San Rocco’ - with a mural. Titled ‘A Cheerful Person’ (2021) the artwork borrows from the colours of the surrounding landscape and transforms the outside of the structure into an abstract smiling face, whimsically incorporating the flower-shaped window in the centre of its façade as its nose.
