As Bill Murray would have said in Groundhog Day, “Well, it’s martech landscape day… again.”
It has become an annual tradition at our spring MarTech conference to release an updated version of maybe the most infamous slide in marketing: the marketing technology landscape. We’re keeping that custom alive this year again.
What a crazy graphic! We nicknamed it the “Martech 5000” a couple of years ago. While I like the ring of that — kinda rhymes with the Fortune 500 and the Inc. 5000 — it’s a misnomer. Last year’s landscape already exceeded 6,829 solutions.
We’re now up to 7,040 solutions on the 2019 Marketing Technology Landscape Supergraphic.
For perspective, here’s the growth of this project over the past 8 years:
You can still get the original 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 editions of the landscape. Collect them all!
More importantly, for this year, you can get a free Excel spreadsheet of all 7,040 solutions plus a super hi-res PDF version of the graphic (100MB) — suitable for printing wall-sized, if you’re so inclined — in exchange for giving me permission to email you about new content and events I’m doing.
A few important notes, and then I’ll provide some initial color commentary:
The team at Blue Green, who did the graphic design work for the landscape last year, stepped up to lead production for the whole effort this year, including our data research. A team of 9 people worked on this for many months! We also built on contributions from Anand Thaker in 2017 and 2018. I am deeply grateful for the magnificent work they did.
I expressly grant permission to reproduce copies of this graphic in full and “as is” in any slide presentation or website, up to a resolution of 1,600×900 pixels. (Or embed the graphic from my CDN). For higher resolutions or uses, please ask first. A backlink to this post would be greatly appreciated.
This graphic is only our personal approximation of the marketing technology space and is surely rife with errors and omissions (our apologies). It is intended only to stir discussion. You can publicly identify or clarify your company in the comments section below.
Key resources used in our research to build this graphic: CabinetM, Capterra, G2 Crowd, Google, LUMA Partners, Siftery, and TrustRadius. We used these services to discover new companies and to triangulate our categorization. As always, a debt of inspiration is owed to Terence Kawaja, the godfather of vendor LUMAscapes.
Have we reached “peak martech?” (gasp)
Ever since I started this project, the martech landscape has grown year-over-year by double or, originally, triple digits. The 2017 edition had 39% more solutions than 2016. The 2018 one had 27% more than 2017. Its growth has been slowing, a kind of law of large numbers inevitability. But when you’re talking thousands of solutions, double-digit growth is still pretty massive.
The 2019 edition, however, only grew 3%.
That’s not so much a slowing down as a flattening out, a plateau. At face value, it would seem that, indeed, we have achieved “peak martech.” (pause for dramatic effect)
Now, for those industry consolidation hawks who have been heckling me for the past 8 years, you might be tempted to declare victory at this moment. “Ah, ha — I told you so, Brinker!” But before rolling out your editorial parade, you might want to take a couple of things into consideration:
7,000 marketing technology solutions isn’t exactly a “consolidated” market. We’d have to compress the industry by an order of magnitude or two — to 700 or even 70 — before that adjective would apply.
It turns out that this isn’t so much “peak martech” as it is “peak martech landscape.”
See, there is a limit to how much time is reasonable to invest in producing this graphic. One could argue that I should have hit that limit several editions ago. But this year, having 9 people working on it for 3-4 months was as much as even I could justify (or afford).
Yet we know there’s a ton more marketing technology solutions out there. Not hypothetically speaking. I can actually point you at hundreds to thousands of martech products that aren’t on this year’s marketing technology landscape.
Let’s take a look…
Martech Beyond the Martech Landscape
These are five buckets of martech apps that are not fully represented on my landscape:
Regional martech apps
Vertical industry martech apps
Martech apps built for specific martech platform ecosystems
Martech apps build by services companies (but packaged as products)
Martech apps built with low-code/no-code citizen developer platforms
Starting with regional martech apps, I’ve been amazed over the past couple of years by the number of people who have created “national martech maps” for different countries, charting all — or as many as they can find — marketing technology companies headquartered there.
There’s the Canadian martech landscape, the Finnish martech landscape, the United Kingdom martech landscape, the Chinese martech landscape, the German martech landscape, and just released this week, the Swedish martech landscape. It’s impressive. I think of it as the Martech Olympics.
Since I’ve been so impressed with these, I’m embarrassed to say that we didn’t think to cross-reference this when we were assembling our global landscape this year until after it was off to press. We missed hundreds of regional martech companies. And that’s just considering the handful from countries with a published landscape.
Similarly, while we’ve certainly incorporated many vertical industry martech apps into our landscape, we know we’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s out there — companies like LabWorthy in the dental industry or ChurchCRM, neither of which are on our landscape. Just finding these companies, without going deep in every industry ourselves, is a Herculean task.
But where things get particularly interesting to me is the explosion of martech apps that are a result of the 3 trends driving the Second Golden Age of Martech. (You can read that article, or you can also watch this 40-minute talk of mine.)
Each of these trends — the growth of platform ecosystems, the blending of software and services businesses, and the rise of citizen developer platforms — are birthing whole new galaxies of martech apps.
The major marketing suites have all embraced becoming true marketing platforms, with ever more open APIs and official marketplaces for third-party apps. Here are just a few of these martech ecosystem marketplaces, each with hundreds of apps:
Salesforce
Adobe
Oracle
HubSpot
Shopify
Microsoft
G Suite
While many of the products listed in these ecosystem marketplaces are included on our marketing technology landscape — primarily those that operate across multiple marketing platforms — there’s a growing number that are uniquely built for an individual platform’s ecosystem. They aren’t as easy to discover outside of those ecosystems, but within them, they can be apps greatly loved by those communities. And some of those communities are quite large.
As one example, check out OrgChartHub, a product built specifically for HubSpot’s platform.
For the extreme end of the ecosystem app spectrum, consider the fact that WordPress has more than 54,000 plugins that have been created for it. Each of these plugins is a kind of mini martech app. (Some of them actually have quite a bit of scale.)
I have no idea exactly how many of these aren’t on our marketing technology landscape, but mathematically, I know it’s more than 47,840.
Forget the Martech 5000. Are you ready for the Martech 50,000?
Now, I’m not saying all these martech apps and platforms are equal. There are many orders of magnitude difference in scale between a major marketing platform company like Adobe and a WordPress plug-in such as Social Warfare.
That’s not a knock against Social Warfare by any means. In fact, I just installed them on this blog, and I absolutely love their product. They don’t need to be a $120 billion public company to delight me as a customer.
Marketing technology is long, long, loooooong tail:
But all along this continuum, useful martech apps are thriving. In context, each has value and purpose — however broad or niche — to the marketers they serve. Indeed, this is one of the most compelling arguments for major marketing platforms to embrace an open ecosystem strategy: the splendid diversity of specialized apps that can flourish on that foundation.
That’s where the magic happens, where the energy and intelligence of engineering teams within platform companies is multiplied by all the energy and intelligence of hundreds or thousands of imaginative, third-party app developers. That massively distributed engine of innovation serves the myriad of needs and desires across different customers.
The blending of software and services business models is another rich source of martech apps that we’ve had a hard time cataloguing. Major consulting firms such as Deloitte, Accenture, and PwC all have their own martech products now, lending credibility to the model. But a large number of services-developed martech apps are emerging out of smaller firms too.
Blue Green, who produced this year’s landscape, is a great example with their Blue Green Analytics product. Their experience with conversion optimization engagements as a services company helped them identify a gap in the martech tool universe that they could uniquely fill. And because it plugs in to major marketing platforms, it’s easy for customers to adopt.
Finally, there’s the category of “citizen martech” — apps that non-programmers can create using low-code or no-code platforms. Airtable is one of my favorite: if you can work with a spreadsheet, you can build a martech app. Seriously.
This democratization of development in marketing technology dramatically expands the number of people who can create martech apps. As a result, a lot more martech apps are produced — even if they’re relatively small and serve a highly specialized function.
Now, you might be saying, “Yeah, Scott, but those are just little custom apps built for use within a single organization. They’re not apps available to other marketers.”
Ah, but not so fast. Because many of these low-code and no-code platforms have now created marketplaces where users can contribute — and in some cases sell — their apps to others. A great example is the Airtable Universe:
The long, long tail of martech apps just got even longer.
A Representative Sample of the Marketing Technology Industry
So, I think we can safely say we’re not at “peak martech” — even if, at least for this year, we’ve reached peak martech landscape.
The truth is that marketing and marketing technology are changing. The challenges of trying to chart all these different martech apps — and running into philosophical debates about what qualifies as an “app” in a world of tens of thousands of pieces of software that could each claim to belong in that collection — is actually a pretty good reflection of the underlying evolution of software in general.
While individual categories on the marketing technology landscape — and the larger vendors operating within each of them — continue to jockey between expansion and consolidation, all of this is happening against a backdrop of ever more apps, platforms, components, and services steadily expanding for the foreseeable future.
So this year’s marketing technology landscape is less complete than ever. But still hopefully a visceral representation of just how expansive and varied the field of martech software is.

2019 Kia K900 First Test: Bargain Luxury, Tested
You can’t fake competence. Regardless of how soft the leather feels or how chauffeur-ready a back seat is, a luxury sedan must drive well. Without dynamic excellence, the sedan will feel more like a bucket of features than a genuine luxury sedan, leading some to question why they didn’t buy a pricier model from an established brand. After a year behind the wheel of a 420-hp 2015 Kia K900 V-8, I appreciated the car’s value but said it had potential. The new 2019 K900 attempts to realize that potential with a twin-turbo V-6 and standard all-wheel drive. We tested the Kia-badged luxury sedan and found the K900 manages to make more with less.
If the idea of a $64,895 Kia sedan disgusts instead of intrigues, enjoy your Mercedes. But before you lease an E 300 sedan or BMW 530i, sit in the Kia’s back seat. Nice, huh? Although the new K900 drives like a more convincing luxury car than the last-gen model, the large sedan’s most captivating feature remains its comfortable rear-seat accommodations. Impress your clients—or spoil your kids—with the loaded K900’s power-adjustable heated and ventilated rear seats. The K900 seeks to (again) reshape consumer perceptions about the Kia brand. No matter how good the car gets, it will never be enough for some buyers who want a little “I’ve made it” status with their luxury-sedan experience.
Everyone else can delight in the fact that the 2019 Kia K900 is both quicker and more efficient than its eight-cylinder predecessor. With 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque from a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6, the new 2019 K900’s only powerplant hurtles all 4,717 pounds to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. Despite such a hefty curb weight, that’s three- to four-tenths of a second quicker than 2015 K900 V-8s we’ve tested and actually competitive with other luxury sedans. Sure, the 2019 K900 is at least a second quicker to 60 compared to BMW 530i and Mercedes-Benz E 300 sedans we’ve tested, but buyers of those turbo-four-powered cars may be more brand-conscious than Acura and Lincoln buyers. The Lincoln Continental sedan with the line-topping 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 completes the 0–60 sprint in 5.5 seconds. A 2017 Volvo S60 T6 matches the K900’s speed, while the Acura RLX hybrid—which carries a similar price as the Kia—smokes them all at 4.9 seconds.
So the new six-cylinder, AWD-only K900 is quicker than its eight-cylinder RWD-only predecessor. What those numbers don’t show is the new Kia’s superior body control. Associate road test editor Erick Ayapana noticed it during braking testing that resulted in a 60–0 mph stop in a respectable 117 feet. On the street, I definitely noticed the lack of floppiness, as that trait was often a factor in the last K900.
The Kia’s power to surprise continued in testing on MotorTrend’s figure-eight course, which evaluates braking, cornering, acceleration, and the transitions between them. Road test editor Chris Walton called the 2019 K900 “unexpectedly fun and capable.” Although he also found the steering a bit vague and slow, the Kia’s improved dynamics translated to a figure-eight time of 25.5 seconds at 0.70 g (average). That’s way better than the last 2015 K900 V-8 we tested and even a tad quicker than BMW 530i and 540i sedans we’ve tested. It’s also far better than the RLX hybrid, Continental 3.0, and S60 T6, all of which are also all-wheel drive.
Just as Walton found on the track, the K900 rewards smoothness on the street, too. Should a situation call for a quick burst of power, however, the responsive eight-speed is ready to answer to that command. But again, just relax. Enjoy the way the real wood trim rises from a horizontal plane to meet the dash’s matching trim or feel the leather-covered grab handles. Appreciate the fact that every K900 includes a 17-speaker 900-watt Lexicon sound system, 12.3-inch infotainment screen (controllable with your touch or via a control knob), a 20-way power driver’s seat with power-adjustable side bolsters, and a surround-view camera system that works intuitively.
The bottom line with features: The 2019 K900 doesn’t have a true base model—at least that’s true as this is written. The only option—besides a sadly limited four-color exterior palette with three interior colors—is the VIP package. For $4,000, Kia makes the two rear outboard seats power-adjustable, adds a microfiber headliner that feels great, makes the rear outboard seats not just heated but also ventilated, includes an additional pair of rear air vents (on the B-pillars), and gives the driver a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. Really, though, this package is only worth the money if you like the idea of 14- and 12-way power-adjustable rear outboard seats. One of the only omissions is a panoramic sunroof (a regular-sized version is standard), curious considering how many other Kias offer that feature. Although the rear seat is comfortable, taller passengers may wish the K900 allowed them to stick their feet underneath the front seats.
These are small issues for a cabin that gets most of the details right, including a leather-like material on the back of the door pulls. The biggest detractor with the 2019 K900 isn’t even the fact that it’s a Kia—it’s the expected dealership experience. As I found with the 2015 K900 with which I spent a year, and as we discovered with our long-term 2018 Kia Stinger GT, “a trip to the Kia dealer is like flying coach when you’re used to first class.” The K900’s 3 years/36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance is helpful, but no matter how nice your local dealer is, it can’t compete with the experience of Genesis or Lincoln (the dealer picks up the car for you, services it, then returns it).
Speaking of Genesis, check out the G80 Sport if the K900 VIP package’s rear-seat upgrades don’t interest you. The Genesis is about 5 inches shorter but still looks and feels like a luxury car, even if the back seat isn’t quite as big. It’s also slightly cheaper and has the same engine but offers RWD in addition to AWD. When the G80 Sport’s “I’m sporty!” design is too shouty, also consider the Volvo S90. Now only offered in a long-wheelbase form, the S90 in T6 AWD form has the same 5.2-second 0–60 time as the G80 Sport (RWD) and 2019 K900. But if you’re the rare buyer looking to wow rear-seat passengers and don’t mind a Kia badge staring you in the face on your $64,895 car, the K900 finally has enough performance to match the feature content you expect.

Our vacuum sealer was designed to work with dry AND moist foods. If the food you're sealing is damp just choose "Moist" mode, otherwise "Dry" mode will get the job done!
✓ 5 TIMES LONGER STORAGE, KEEPS FOOD FRESH - E5200-M keeps food fresh up to 5x longer than ordinary storage methods such as ziplock bags, foil, plastic wrap and tupperware. The strong gear motor, piston pump and the completely locked seal space are powerful enough to create a suction up to -0.8 bar so that you can easily eliminate air, seal the food and keep food fresh for longer, giving you up to 5-8x more storage time.

Furthermore, the sealed food after vacuum is perfectly ready for sous vide cooking and barbecue. Always improving: Yoast SEO in 2017 »
Starting 2017 with Yoast SEO 4.1
2017 started off with a bang: we added a mobile version of the well-known snippet preview and full support for the German language. We all know mobile has only gained importance this past year and will continue to be essential. Just look at Google’s decision to switch to a mobile-first index sometime early next year.
A strong focus on site structure
The overarching theme of Yoast SEO in 2017 was site structure. We wanted to give you a set of tools to improve your site structure since site structure is one of the most overlooked, but critical parts of SEO. We wanted to build tools that are easy to use and extremely valuable. We’re happy to say we’ve succeeded! During the year, several improvements to current tools and new additions turned Yoast SEO into a fantastic tool to improve your site structure.
Vastly improved internal linking tool
It all started in Yoast SEO 4.0, in December of 2016, when we launched the initial version of the internal linking tool. So what does the internal linking tool do? While working on your post, our internal linking tool will give you suggestions on which posts you could consider linking to because they are about related topics. Linking to these posts will help you create a better site structure.
To quote our CEO Joost de Valk:
“The internal linking tool is one of the most powerful tools we’ve ever built, and it keeps surprising me. I love it. In its current form, it’ll allow you to improve your site structure by the bucketload, just by suggesting posts to link to. I am very excited about where it will go from here!”
New languages
During the year we added several new languages to our roster. Besides English, we added full support for German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and French in 2017. Yoast SEO has full knowledge of these languages so the internal linking tool and readability tools can give solid advice tailored to those languages. In 2018, more languages will follow. Our linguists are even looking into complicated languages like Japanese.
Text link counter
As we all know, links – both internal and external – play an important role in SEO. This year, Yoast SEO received several tools that help improve your linking strategy. Since 4.7, for instance, we check the text to see if you’ve added links. If not, the SEO content check will give you a red bullet. If all is well, Yoast SEO will suggest relevant links to other articles you’ve written, and you can just copy and past a new link in your article.
The text link counter, introduced in Yoast SEO 5.0, works in the post and pages section of your WordPress backend. In two columns, you’ll see how many incoming and outgoing internal links an article has. This functionality is very actionable. If you want to improve your site structure and your SEO, the text link counter will help you do that. You can go through your post with few links and improve your site’s structure step by step.
Orphaned content filter
Orphaned content, you say? Yes, orphaned content is content on your site that doesn’t get any links from other parts of your site. Content that doesn’t get links will stay undiscovered by visitors and search engines. But if a certain article is important to you and you want it to rank for a specific keyword, you need to link it in your site structure. In Yoast SEO 5.6, we added a filter that finds these articles so that you can quickly remedy this situation and add these valuable articles to your site structure.
Checking and optimizing cornerstone content
While and finding and creating relevant links to your other content is crucial to building a solid site structure, there was another piece of the site structure missing: cornerstone content. Cornerstone content pieces are those articles on your website you’re most proud of. They reflect your business, communicate your mission, are thorough and extremely well written. These are the articles you would like to rank high in the search engines.
To help you determine what those articles are, we introduced several cornerstone content features. First, there’s the cornerstone content check in Yoast SEO 4.6. By marking an article as cornerstone content, this article receives priority over a regular article. These articles are analyzed more thoroughly to increase the chance of them popping up as must-link articles.
In Yoast SEO 4.8 we expanded that feature. Since then, we analyze your cornerstone content following a particular, stricter set of specifications. These checks will help you build killer cornerstone articles. Among other things, we now check if a cornerstone article has 900+ words and if the keyword is in at least two subheadings. All this will help you to improve your most important content.
This suite of site structure tools gives you everything you need to improve your site structure. Use them!
So what else was new?
Besides helping you fix your site structure, we did loads of other cool stuff. Let’s go!
Redirect improvements
Our redirects manager is one of the most important tools in Yoast SEO. It helps you redirect anything you ever wanted. This year, we improved it drastically, with new filter options and a long-awaited import/export from/to CSV. You can analyze your redirects in a sheet, make edits and import it again.
SEO roles
Yoast SEO was always an on/off affair. There was no way to give site editors, for instance, access to selected parts of the plugin they need to do their work. Since Yoast SEO 5.5, that is now possible! Expanded in 5.8, SEO roles and capabilities give site managers to chance to fine-tune who gets to access what in Yoast SEO.
Tune Yoast SEO to your liking
Getting lost in all the Yoast SEO settings? Don’t need the readability analysis? Just want the basic settings? No problem, an ever-increasing number of features in Yoast SEO gets their own on/off toggle. Keep your workspace clean and focused.

Info PHP 7 and beyond
At Yoast, we care about a lot of things, but two things in a very particular order: user happiness first, developer happiness second. A user is happy when he or she has a fast, easy to install, secure content management system like WordPress to build a site in. A developer is happy when he or she can use a modern language and modern tooling to build software with. That’s why we started the Whip project in March of 2017. The goal of this project is to steer users and web hosts away for unsupported PHP versions like 5.4 and move them towards the fast and secure PHP7.
Full support for ACF
2017 was also the year of an awesome collaborative effort: The ACF Content Analysis for Yoast SEO plugin. The Advanced Custom Fields plugin makes it easier to add custom fields to any WordPress site. Custom fields are used to extend WordPress. People use them to build tailored solutions to, often, complex problems. The ACF Content Analysis for Yoast SEO plugin makes it possible for Yoast SEO to work inside custom fields. By using this plugin, you can use the SEO and readability analysis features of Yoast SEO to check your writing and SEO score, even if they live in a complex custom field.
Vastly improved code-base
This year was not all about new features. We’ve been hard at work improving our code to make our plugins future-proof and easier to manage. One of the biggest project at Yoast right now is project Reactify. We are in the process of rebuilding several main parts of Yoast SEO in the JavaScript library React. This makes these easier to port to other platforms, for instance.
Yoast SEO for Magento 2 & TYPO3
Yoast was built for an open source world, and we’re branching out to other open CMSes. This year, we introduced the Magento 2 and TYPO3 communities to the pleasures of working with Yoast SEO. Together with our development partner MaxServ, we built tailored plugins for these popular platforms. We’re already looking where to go next.
Ending 2017 with Yoast SEO 6.0
In a year spanning more than 30 releases, the last one was maybe the most talked about. Not that we introduced a killer new feature or did something awkward. No, it was all about Google’s decision to move from 160 character meta descriptions to 320 character descriptions. This caused quite a stir and people were quickly asking whether Yoast SEO would follow suit and let people use all those characters. In Yoast SEO 6.0, we expanded the length of descriptions. We, however, are still researching what this decision means for the advice we give our users.
Thanks to you, our beloved community contributors
In the end, we couldn’t have done it without you. We love getting input, feedback, bug reports and features requests. Almost every release featured a community contribution, either bug fixes or improving the flow of our plugin. We love getting these suggestions, and we love to see how much thought and care people put in their work. Collectively, we make Yoast SEO better and better!
And 2018?
We’ve got loads of plans for the new year, but first, we’ve got to get a new speed bump out of the way. You know that word? It starts what a ‘G’ and ends with ‘utenberg’. Yeah, Gutenberg is going to take up a lot of our time. We’re pretty optimistic about the project, and we are doing our best to help improve where we can. We’re investing loads of time and manpower to get Gutenberg off the ground and make a killer integration for Yoast SEO. Stay tuned; you’re bound to hear a lot from us in 2018!
