Yes, sure, Deandra, Brittnay, Mackenzie, and the Trishas are the funniest characters on this show as well as the stronghold, ultimately, but let’s talk about Shay Van Buren for a moment.

Without a doubt, Shay is underrated, and it just puzzles me because not only is she absolutely hilarious, but by far one of the more relatable and likeable out of the girls. Don’t get me wrong. I love them all, but the majority of them are just terrible people. Shay is not one of those people. She is an actually good person without being a Mary Sue caricature like Amberlynn Weggers, BUT she’s also not above all of the superficiality and hierarchical bullshit either.

Like the other girls, Shay is just as power-mad, vain, catty, and bitchy, BUT where she truly differentiates from the others is that she’s also very sweet, loyal to a fault, does not bully those that stay out of her way, and values more than JUST popularity. She actually values her friendships and treats her friends with respect, and she’s fiercely loyal towards her friends and family alike. Hands down, if I were a character on this show, Shay Van Buren would be who I would befriend because she’s a damn good one.

In addition to that she has redeeming qualities and personality traits that are actually likeable outside of the context of fiction, she’s also the most identifiable. She has insecurities stemming from an inferiority-complex caused by the fact that she’s always in her older sister’s shadow, there is a fuck ton of pressure put on her to uphold the Van Buren legacy, and out of all the girls, she is the least caricature-like and the most believable as a realistic human being. (Ignoring the fact that she’s a Barbie doll made of plastic, lol)

On one hand, she’s sassy, funny, and unapologetically bitchy, but on the other, she’s good-natured, well-intentioned, and nice to those deserving, but she also won’t hesitate to put a bitch in her place if they fuck with her or her family.

Shay Van Buren, so often overshadowed by her crazier, more extreme female comrades, is a fucking amazing character that deserves a lot more recognition and appreciation.

Don’t ask how what was supposed to be only a few sentences turned into a long-winded multi-paragraph spiel about a character from a web series centered around the lives of potty-mouted barbies because I don’t even know. I just fucking love Shay Van Buren so much.
