ADAD Assessment 3
So for our final assessment for ADAD, we will need to produce a work based around an event. First we needed to agree on a weekly concept to base our assessment around. We chose an overlap of weekly concepts relating to context and time and body politics.
We communicated over facebook messenger and agreed to make a video for our final assessment. We had an idea set to discuss disassociation and isolation from the environment and were planning to have our video clips recorded by the week. Our depiction for the video was to have a series of landscape videos in different locations recording our surrounding for at least 1 minute. However, the figures that appear in the video will be trimmed and whitened out. After taking the videos, we didn’t continue with our original idea because it was both time consuming and it conveyed the same thing as the original videos.
With our recorded video clips we conducted some research on possible poetries to include. In the end we went with Rupi Kaur because of her straight-forward choice of words addressing issues relating to herself. We sourced poetries from her books, ‘milk and honey’ and ‘the sun and her flowers’. Initially, we were looking for poems about isolation, until we saw the poems about her cultural experiences. This gives a more specific experience of isolation.
In the end, we produced a visual poetry audiobook of mundane events in our everyday lives. The backgrounds were all still, which was intended so that the primary focus was on the voice and thoughts of the narrator. There was minor movements in people to show that the world still moves around us. The voices were read in a soft and wispy tone to sound like thoughts. The pauses between poems and the slow pace create suspense to make the audience want to hear more of the narrator's journey; follow their personal thoughts. It gives insight into our thoughts as second generation immigrants because of the point of view shot. The wide angle shots with people walking at a distance to show the isolation of the individual in comparison to the people walking by. It shows our detachment from the environment during our thoughts; our thoughts regardless of where we are. The everyday locations reinforce that these are our everyday thoughts.

ADAD Assessment 2
STATEMENT
Art and design often explore relationships between humans and non-humans, the environment and ecology. How can contemporary art and design propose new possibilities for imagining the 'human' and the environment.
In this second assessment I approached the question on a personal level. After conducting some research and reading. I thought about Michelle Reader's 'Seven Wasted Men' and it interested me in the way she used one month's worth of garbage to construct her sculptures. Furthermore, she commented on how much you can tell about someone through their waste. I agree with her statement, however, I thought about it the opposite way. How much you can tell about a person through their shopping trolley. In a consumer driven society, sometimes when I go out shopping, I can't help but look at what other people have in their trolley/basket and without knowing it, I start making assumptions. As mentioned before, I wanted to make a comment on the relationship between the humans, non-humans and the environment within a household. This led to the idea of exploring the relationship and discovering the purpose of the indoor plants within my own home.
With further research, I focused on one specific area, Feng Shui. As well as having the ability to lean the air, "Plants have innate positive chi, clear the air of allergens, and really do wonders for us," Marianne Gordon of Feng Shui With Me says. "Much like caring for animals, caring for plants and the action of planting or watering elevates our chi and makes us true or more grounded." Plants are associated with the wood element and are believed to balance the other elements within the house: fire, metal, air and earth.
For my first experimental activity, I took some photos that I found quite interesting to look at. After an in-class critic session between my fellow classmates, I was able to see which direction I want to take with my project and imagine what my final work would be like. For my next experiment I wanted to move away from photography but not completely. Having decided on a personal/cultural theme. I found two photos which were taken from my last trip overseas to my mother's hometown in China and the other photo was of buildings at night in Hong Kong. With these two photos I did some small alterations with the colour/ contrast and hue/saturation options to enhance the photo. These images reflect a different relationship between humans and non-humans in a different environment/setting. The environment which you are brought up in has a relatively high impact on the individual's life.
For my third experiment I went back to photography and further explored the indoor and outdoor plants and experimented on how I would like to document them. For my fourth and last experiment I went to search for more information about the Chinese Zodiac, here I wanted to explore the relationship between humans and non-humans. The Chinese Zodiac is part of a traditional Chinese Culture. There are 12 Zodiac signs and are represented by 12 animals. Together they form a recurring cycle where one year is represented by an animal. Each Zodiac sign has an element. It is believed that the year a person is born determines their zodiac sign which affects their personality. It is also believed that there are different degrees of compatibility between the Zodiac signs. The relationship between humans determined by their Zodiac sign really interests me. Furthermore, Chinese culture, the koi fish holds many meanings. It symbolises, good fortune, success, prosperity, longevity, courage, etc. However, Koi in Feng Shui, is said to attract abundance and prosperity. Although I really liked the significance of the fish and the photos I took, I felt like it looks unfinished.
For my final work, I decided to choose the following photos. The plants I have chosen to display as a part of my final work includes, Orchids and Snake plant. With my final work I wanted to express the significance of the plants by exploring the relationship and discovering the purpose of the indoor plants within my own home. Plants are believed to help the flow of energy within the house and help build a harmonious relationship between the family. I represented the images separately with a white background around them to communicate that you can't just have one plant, you need other types to balance out the energy within one's house. The white background is the space within the house, the different positions where the plants placed in the rooms.

Final Work Layout (experiment)
For my final work, I decided to choose the following photos. The plants I have chosen to display as a part of my final work includes, Orchids and Snake plant. Snake Plant - "In addition to purifying the air, plants cancel the positive ions that emanates from electronics, which we are more and more surrounded with," Orchids bring serenity to any space. They also bring the element of love which can help improve relationships. Orchids promote peace.
Experimenting with how i want to present my final work.

I like the idea of placing the images in a line.

Placing the images in a collage creates a balanced image, however i’m not too sure yet...

Experiment 4
The Koi fish in Chinese culture holds many meanings. It symbolises, good fortune, success, prosperity, longevity, courage, ambition and perseverance. The colour of the fish also influences the overall meaning. However Koi in Feng Shui, it is said to attract abundance and prosperity.
This image was one part of a large cross stitching piece that depicts 9 koi fish with two large lotus flower. This large decorative piece is framed and hung up onto the wall the lounge room within the house.

I adjusted the brightness and the saturation of both images. I applied a mosaic filter on it. However, the image was of across stitching piece, so the filter did not cause a large change.

The second image - a ripple filter was applied however only a small chnage can be seen.

https://feng-shui.lovetoknow.com/feng-shui-home/feng-shui-plants - Bamboo - Symbol of good fortune, bamboo is considered to be one of the more fortuitous plants, bringing positive energy into the home. This plant helps balance all five elements. One interesting point is the number of stalks will determine which aspects it brings the most luck to. - Orchids bring serenity to any space. They also bring the element of love which can help improve relationships. Orchids promote peace.

Experiment 2 (part 2)

I really like this photo depicting a busy gloomy day in the Chenghai district. I think the different line and directions create a sense of conflict but there’s a sense of harmony with the balanced bright colours.

These images reflects a different relationship between humans and non humans in a different environment/setting. The environment which you are brought up in has a relatively high impact on the individual's life.
Personally I like the black and white image better than the second one...

After a little editing!

Research and Inspiration
Yuken Teruya
Yuken Teruya works with various materials such as toilet paper rolls, paper shopping bags. His works often reflects life and history of Okinawa, his homeland.
His art explores the disharmony between human beings and nature. Trees recur throughout Teruya's work. He cuts them out of toilet paper rolls and shopping bags, materials that were destroyed to create. This symbolises the consumer culture and the disregard for our nature.
I really find Teruya's work interesting considering the small sized trees he creates. The idea about consumerism and the consumer culture we have adopted into our lifestyle really stands out. In the fast paced, technological advanced stage we are in, we are constantly looking for alternatives to save time in travelling, food we make, etc.

Global Megatrends Seven Patterns of Change Shaping our Future.By Stefan Hajkowicz
Chapter - More from Less "change the way we travel… make food… type of houses we build"
Problem with food distribution not food scarcity and the management of natural resources. An example which was used in the chapter was that, tonight almost 1 billion people, just under one-seventh of the world’s population, will go to bed hungry because they do not have enough food. On the other hand, 1 billion people suffer ill health because they eat too much food and the wrong type of food. To get ‘more’ out of something ‘less’. To be innovative and wise with what we have. The less resources that are wasted, the more beneficial will it be to our future ahead. It is simply the impact of our global population growing demands and pressures, unequal distribution, and the poor sustainability and security of our global resources.
The social system of humans, non humans and the ecology. 21st Century, we are highly dependent on technology. Constantly in the state of making to cater for the rapid pace we are in. Construction, building, catering for the growing population. Relationships between human, ecology and the human. Relationship is complicated. Interconnected life cycles of the two entities and how they affect each other.
I did some research on Australia’s Wastage System which led to the readings of the National Wastage Report. Nothing really stood out to me while browsing through the wastage report.

Class Activity
Week 5

Naomi Segal
No word for lonliness, 2018. Mixed media.
I really like this piece in the gallery. The artwork was interesting to look at. Made me wonder what the meaning are behind the transferred images of the face. Also wondered the intention of having the creases in the fabric was for. I wonder if the frames underneath the sheer textile piece could be presented/posted up side by side on the wall instead. That way it doesn’t seem cluttered at the bottom.

Sabrina Basuki
Unititled work about Indonesia, 2018
This piece was very well presented. I liked this piece the most. The frame depicted of a television with the buttons at the bottom.
