A recent Madurai Corporation council meeting, convened to discuss the 2025-26 budget report, took an unexpected turn as Mayor Indrani of the ruling DMK expressed regret over the neglect of statues of former Chief Ministers MGR and Jayalalithaa, calling for their proper maintenance. Her remarks sparked reactions across party lines and added a surprising twist to an already charged session.

The meeting, chaired by Mayor Indrani and Corporation Commissioner Chitravijayan, was marked by candid discussions, criticism of city infrastructure issues, and unusual moments of bipartisan sentiment.

During the session, Mayor Indrani lamented the lack of upkeep of the statues, stating, "It is disheartening to see the garlands on the statues of MGR and Jayalalithaa withered. Adding a personal note, Mayor Indrani revealed that despite her position, she had not witnessed the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festival in person since taking office, emphasizing, “I’ve only seen it on TV.”

In a rare gesture, AIADMK’s Leader of the Opposition in the Corporation, Solairaja, praised the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for providing ₹3 lakh compensation to the family of a bullfighter who died during the Avaniyapuram Jallikattu. “This is the first time such a compassionate gesture has been made by any government,” he said, thanking the CM publicly.

North Thrives, South Struggles

CPM councilor Vijaya accused the Corporation of neglecting southern Madurai, stating, “The central and northern zones, represented by Minister Murthy and PTR, are thriving. The southern zone is withering, and streetlights remain non-functional.” Mayor Indrani acknowledged the concern, urging officials to resolve the ongoing streetlight issues raised frequently by both councilors and the public.

Symbolic Clashes and Controversies

Tensions flared briefly when VVIP member Ingulab’s speech likened the national flower, lotus, to political pollution, prompting BJP councilor Bhoomasree to protest what she described as a desecration of a national symbol.
