So do you need to be an artist to get into the server or is it just hoping someone from the server invites you?

Well, you don't need visual art, if you're talking about that. Again, you just need an AU :D

And it's pretty informal, so invitation does just kind of happen, yeah. Us in-server can submit a request, but otherwise, we just invite anyone whose AU seems interesting and vote on it.

Hello. How do you get to be apart of the vanillaverse?

Technically, just by having an AU with SM and/or PV (or the Ancients and/or Beasts in general)! The 'vanillaverse' was just a term some of us around here co-opted for that kind of AU.

I assume you're talking about the ones in the posters, though- those ones are from the Vanillaverse server. Entering that requires an invite from a member in the server.
