so much of tangerine, emotionally, is hidden behind a brick wall and i’m a mess about it this morning.

truly. wholeheartedly. i simply cannot watch things without subtitles anymore.

you know why “tangerine’s world goes silent” hits me as hard as it does? separating it ( as much as you can ) from the movie and physically getting to see that emotion on a person who, up til then, had only one Very slight vulnerability — book!tange spends pages upon pages disparaging lemon, ensuring that the reader knows how little he thinks of being paired with someone so lazy and not only to be his partner! but that people constantly compared lemon to him. considered to look close enough to be his fucking twin. and then you watch as tangerine begins to worry when he hasn’t seen lemon in a while. and you get to realise that “oh, good. this tangerine does care about this lemon.” and then the prince says “are you sure you want to go in?” when they’re together at the bathroom door. and you hate it because there isn’t even a second of a pause. the wired lock is a clue from lemon, isn’t it? so of course tangerine will follow the thread ( or… copper wire ).

and then the line. tangerine’s world goes silent. and all that you’ve been given so far is how messy the scene is. that, and the knowledge of what tangerine would find, thanks to the prince’s earlier chapter. you can almost hear the way the sounds of the train, the prince’s shrill voice, all of it mutes until tangerine says “lemon,” and you can feel the weight of it even though it’s a single word printed on a page.

tangerine’s world goes silent. […] sound returns to his ears. the rattling of the shinkansen penetrates to his very core. […] tangerine feels his chest split open and shatter into small pieces. a cold wind gusts into the hole in his heart. he realises he’s never felt this before, which leaves him even more shaken.

this man who, up until now, has been business forward. who doesn’t have time for lemon’s t&f tangents. who says he’d rather not be associated with his partner bc they do not present the same standard. who finds a book he’d recommended to lemon in his pocket alongside a crumpled sticker sheet. who knows exactly which two trains are missing. “you know a lot about thomas & friends too, mr. tangerine.”

tangerine’s world goes silent is the book’s version of and lemon? you be careful too. in that it slaps me in the face with a feeling i wasn’t expecting. like, yeah, there are bits and pieces that slowly start to show how tange cares. in the book when his worry starts to manifest and in the movie when he asks about the bullet proof vest, etc. but that line? it means so much to me.
