I have a nemesis.

I know, I know. Don’t say anything, ok? No one knows, SHE doesn’t know.

She’s in my field, we have the same medium. The only difference is hers is strictly digital. I was openly supportive, I always engaged with her work, but deep down I was low-key frustrated with how popular she is. I kept these feelings to myself — of course — just kept my head down and stayed in my lane. Today I noticed she started using what she calls “AI ephemera” which she deems as “ethical AI” because in her words, “did not render it herself.”

Yeah. Fucking yeah. I know. Like my chosen medium isn’t shit on enough. Let’s add another reason why someone can argue that my medium isn’t “real art.” I feel pretty spicy about it.

Anyways.

I was looking at the likes (it had thousands) and I was shocked to see artists I know, who openly denounce AI, leave positive comments on these AI rendered pieces.

It’s a slap in the face. It feels like more proof that my community doesn’t see what I do as art. Like, you wouldn’t believe how many dead-eyed stares I get when I introduce myself and my medium at openings. I always have to follow up with, “it’s more of a sculpture” or “I swear it’s really fucking cool.”

I know I need to work on my confidence. I promise I’m working on it. Confidence and sobriety are a bit of a learning curve.

Today she posted about submitting a piece to a very popular art magazine contest. She showed the piece she’s considering and wants viewer input on what changes she should make. This piece doesn’t have AI in it, but it’s fucking lazy.

Yeah, I said it. I’ll be cunty about it too because it’s THAT fucking lazy.

So I got fucking spicy-mad and decided IM GONNA ENTER THE FUCKING CONTEST TOO

I normally don’t do contests, or submit to anything I need to pay a fee for. It feels like gambling, and I’m not a fan. But I fucking REFUSE to let her represent my chosen medium without throwing my hat in the ring.

I know I used to say there’s no wrong or right way to do my type of art — any art, really — but once your art starts hurting your community you’re doing it fucking wrong. End of story.

I’m not going to stir any shit. I’m going to stay in my lane and continue to elevate my art. I decided to submit the showboat piece I just completed. I’m not expecting anything, but I want eyes on it to prove that not all art in my medium is trite fucking horseshit.

That dork can go milk ducks. If I wasn’t so opposed to AI I would render that image for her.

It’s a vibe.
