18- Baba Yaga

18- Baba Yaga (Slavic Folklore).
This classic witch originates from Russian mythology and Slavic fairytales. Baba Yaga appears in various legends, often occupying the role of the witch residing deep in the woods that the main character must interact and barter with. She is the predecessor to witches like those found in the fairy tales of Charles Perrault, as well as those found in the Grimm Brothers’ works. Baba Yaga retains many unique characterizations and attributes not found in any other witch, however, making her singularly iconic.
Baba Yaga is described as a hideous, deformed, and vicious looking woman, resembling the classic hag archetype. In some versions of her story, Baba Yaga is not one, but three sisters all named Baba Yaga, each sister being older than the next. In this way, Baba Yaga is intimately connected to both The Graeae and the Moirai (#64), and illustrates the triple goddess. More specifically, Baba Yaga is a representation of the Crone phase, and is associated with death, darkness, and winter. Her function in the legends she appears in further matches this archetype, as she “may help or hinder” the characters that beseech her. She stands at the crossroads of death and mystery, allowing some to pass unscathed.
Baba Yaga is best known for two specific attributes that have defined witch iconography and contributed to Baba Yaga’s mythological uniqueness. Her residence, as well as her choice of aerial transportation, are some of the most distinctive out of any witch in this series. While most fairy tale and fictional witches fly through the sky on their iconic brooms, Baba Yaga sits her little old body inside a mortar, and steers her “spice-craft” with a pestle as rudder. The iconography and symbolic nature of this, with the mortar representing the divine feminine/womb and the pestle representing the divine masculine/phallus, shows Baba Yaga to be a character in balance with nature, called by some as a “phallic mother”. Other depictions show Baba Yaga riding through the sky in a cauldron, further solidifying the relationships between witches and their love of these cast iron pots (Ceridwen #56).
Baba Yaga’s hut is similarly iconic and unique, and has influenced centuries of witch-lore. Her house sits upon a pair of chicken legs (sometimes just a single claw). It jumps in the air and spins around, constantly moving from place to place and turning direction. I’ve seen dozens of references and depictions of witch-homes on chicken legs, but they are all imitations of Baba Yaga’s. Her yard is surrounded by a fence impaled with skulls, furthering her placement at the gates of death and dying. Her fowl-legged home appears in the earliest references to Baba Yaga, so whatever this strange attribute means, its intimately connected to her being.
The etymological roots and significance of her name are disputed. It’s generally agreed that the Baba is the same root as babushka, meaning grandmother. Other roots in Old Russian bring the shared meaning of Baba to “midwife, sorceress, and fortune teller”. The Yaga part of her name is less conclusive, however, with no root universally agreed upon. Some believe it has its origin in “serpent, snake”, while others see it from anything from “horror”, “witch”, “evil woman”, and “pain and worry”. In this way, Baba Yaga principally means Grandmother Witch, the Slavic etymological counterpart to the Italian version, Strega Nona (#21). Both Strega Nona and Baba Yaga are examples of the tradition of witch names ending in an A, with Baba Yaga perhaps being the earliest (See: Hilda and Zelda #36, Sabrina #62, Samantha/Endora/Clara #s 89/54/39, Glinda 76, et. al.).
In modern times, Baba Yaga has become more of a bogeyman character, used to scared children into good behavior. She’s described as flying through the air in her cauldron, stealing kids away to eat them. She is often shown as a consort to the personification of Death, sealing her Crone status. This association expands beyond the original source material for her, however, and while she is now often seen as evil, she was more thoroughly understood as being morally ambiguous. Baba Yaga’s ultimate good or evil was brought out by the decisions and/or actions of the main character in the fairy tale who interacted with her, serving as a reminder of caution, thoughtfulness, and sure-footedness.
Baba Yaga remains one of the classic hag witches from world folklore and mythology. I am absolutely enamored with her flying around in a Mortar/Pestle, as I find her to be one of the prototypes for modern Kitchen Witch iconography. Her witch residence goes down in history as one of the most unique, rivaled only by the far removed castles of witch/queens. I find her manifestation as three Baba Yagas, each living in a chicken-clawed home, to be her most allegorical and fascinating. In this way, Baba Yaga illustrates the singularity and unity of the Triple Goddess into one character, promoting the final stage of Crone as the most pertinent to the archetypes of witchcraft.

The three virtues of the Magician
Ever since I started studying magic, I’ve apprehended everything in a very scattered way. No head and no toes. With time I started understanding in my own way how to sort everything in my head. This is how I arrange everything while I study.

The Virtue of Knowing (Gnosis)
The passive Virtue. It does not talk about knowledge in the superficial sense of the word. Knowing here is related to the acknowledgement, understanding and observing of the realities, not just cognitive learning. I divide this Virtue in two Hylegnosis, Aithergnosis.
Hylegnosis relates to the knowledge of all things material. Here the studies of Astronomy, Herbology, chemistry and others apply.

Aithergnosis relates to all that can be known and observed within the Astral Light (in Qabalistic terms, from Tipheret to Yesod). This virtue is related with Clairvoyance.
Meditations within this Virtue deal with passive observance.

The Virtue of Daring (Thaumaturgy)
The active Virtue is related to the performing of magical deeds. From the performing of visualization and manipulation of energy to the most complex ceremonial magic. Invoking, evoking, transfiguration, transmutation, projection and manipulation.
Meditations within this virtue deal with active visualizations, astral projection and creation.

The Virtue of Being (Theurgy)
Perhaps the most important Virtue, deals with the sublimation of the self and building the Body of Light. This is the true area of the Magician. It appears as the basis for the expansion and growing of Consciousness.
It’s tools include active and passive meditation, ceremonial magic and daily behaviour.

1- Hecate

1- Hecate
Greek Titan of Witches, Witchcraft, Sorcery, and Crossroads.
When I first began this project, I knew that I wanted to end with Hecate. She is simultaneously the final and the first, our alpha and omega of Witchcraft. She dominates popular witch lore, but you would never know it as she resides in the shadows, side plots, and brief mentions. Only when you seek her out does she reveal herself to you, lighting your path while casting shadows and ghosts. Many, if not all, modern Witches, Pagans, and Wiccans see Hecate as a Goddess of Witches, amongst other appropriate attributes, and continue her worship and reverence now several thousand years ongoing.
As is the case with most of Greek Mythology, Hecate has multiple origin myths and genealogies. This is most likely the result of her originating outside of the Greeks, and being adapted and merged with the existing pantheon. Most traditions have Hecate as the daughter of the Titans Perses, titan of destruction, and Asteria, titan of falling stars and nocturnal prophecy. Hecate was their only child, and was able to retain her powers post Zeus’ coup as she helped him fight the Giants. As child of Asteria, her grandmother was the Titan of the Moon, Phoebe, and her cousin was Olympian lunar all-star Artemis.
There are various stories in which Hecate plays a part. Her most notable and appropriate for this time of year, however, is her integral role in assisting Demeter’s search for her beloved daughter, Persephone. Upon Persephone’s decent into Hades, Hecate, through the light of her torches, helped Demeter discover her daughter in the underworld. As such, Hecate has become a chthonic Goddess, and Persephone’s yearly attendant and psychopomp to the underworld. Her position as gatekeeper and guide to Hades solidifies many of her numerous attributes.
Hecate is associated with ghosts, necromancy, and magic. She is identified with crossroads, torches, and dark hounds. She was a common household deity for the Athenian—her shrines placed in doorways and city gates to both protect from restless spirits and bestow blessings and safe passage. Her worship and cult was as extensive as her various attributes, with temples and shrines scattered across the Mediterranean. As a key figure in the Persephone saga, Hecate was integral in the ancient Eleusinian Mysteries, impacting secret societies and occult rituals to this day.
Out of all her characteristics, her association with the crossroads is perhaps the most pertinent to my series. Most often, we think of crossroads as the intersection of two roads, yielding four directions. This was not always the case, however, as it was more common to have a proverbial ‘fork in the road’, yielding three directions. This is the kind of crossroads in which Hecate resides. Her statues depict her in triplicity, forearms outstretched, holding torches, keys, serpents, daggers, etc. One face in each direction, Hecate is the arbiter of passages, and in this way is the consort of the God Hermes.
Hecate is one of the original Triple Goddesses of Witchcraft, if not the primordial one. Her triplicity has defined much of Modern Pagan theology, with her stance representing the three phases of the moon, Waxing, Full, and Waning (Maiden, Mother, Crone respectively). Her mythological genealogy as the granddaughter of Phoebe and cousin to Artemis has yielded Hecate as a Goddess of the Moon in her own right, most often known as the unseen phase of the moon, the New Moon (however she is just as often associated with all moon phases). In Greek/Roman Mythology, Hecate joins many lunar goddesses in addition to Phoebe and Artemis, including Selene and Diana. The five were often conflated, confused, and worshiped both in tandem and in conflict. This ever shifting, impossible to pin down, lunar association echos her transient nature of existing in the shadows.
Hecate is both mysterious and severe. Her face is hidden behind her torches, or on the dark side of the moon, however her presence is a constant. She is life, death, and rebirth. She is both light and dark magic. She was beloved in her association with rites of passage like childbirth, and feared in her role as Queen of Shades, present at the final rite of passage, death. Her nature has permeated my entire series in such a profound and indescribable way, I can only show you:
#93: Lilith— often worshiped by modern Pagans in tandem with Hecate #92: Circe: Daughter of Hecate #89, #54, #39: Bewitched: A common expression “For Hecate’s Sake!” Occurs throughout the show. #79: Aradia: Daughter of Lucifer and Diana. Often seen as the daughter of an amalgamated Diana-Hecate. #70: Medea: Priestess of Hecate #67: Charmed: The Halliwell Sisters: Appears in the episode “The Wedding from Hell” #56: Ceridwen: Often worshiped in tandem with Hecate as Dark Mothers by modern Pagans. . #52, #27: Practical Magic: The necromancy ritual the Owen’s Sisters perform, albeit pronounced incorrectly. “Black as night, erase death from our sight. White as light, Mighty Hecate make it right.” #10: Willow Rosenberg: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Mentioned in several episodes and referred to as “Queen and Protectress of Witches.” #7: American Horror Story: Coven: Supreme Fiona Goode invokes Hecate “Come to me Hecate, Mother of Angels, Cosmic World Soul.” #5: The Weird Sisters: Macbeth: Hecate is their master
This list is pretty fitting for a Goddess whose name etymologically may mean “she that operates from afar.” She is seldom a central figure or even visible, however witches from the Owens to the Goodes, from Willow Rosenberg to Endora, invoke her name and ask for her spirit, guidance, and presence. Hecate, in many ways, is both the first witch, and the last. She is our alpha and omega. She is the embodiment of power and strength. As a Goddess of Witchcraft, she does not merely exist in the margins of society like the rest of us—She is the margin itself.
Hail Hecate.
“Hecate, Cerridwen. Dark Mother take us in. Hecate, Cerridwen. Let us be reborn.”

‘Give me Sunshine’ Potion for Happiness

I think I have a new favorite beverage! This potion is quick and easy to make – ideal for college witches, new witches, and even children! The recipe itself can be enjoyed as a non-witch beverage too.
Ingredients:
- milk (or milk substitute)
- vanilla or honey
- cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg
Process:
1. Pour a glass of milk. Add vanilla or honey, depending on what you have. I used ¼ tsp of vanilla in mine. Using either a spoon or your finger, stir the glass counter-clockwise to banish negativity. Put the glass in the microwave for about 30-45 seconds.
2. Add cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg as desired. I used both cloves and cinnamon in mine.
nutmeg - luck, love, clairvoyance
cinnamon - happiness, luck, wealth
cloves - luck, protection, love
3. Stir the beverage clockwise to promote positivity and activate your ingredients.
Enjoy!

So You Wanna Astral Project!
I’ve been astral projecting for a long time now, and I do it at least 4 times a week, probably more. I think I have a problem. Anyway. Here are a few tips on what to do, what not to do, etc for all ya’ll trying to get into astral travel. A few of the things have links for places to find more information, ideas, and stuff.
1. You’re Captain America- get yoself a shield. I use 2 shields when I project, both protective spirals. Basically, when you’re projecting your body is left unprotected by your spirit so you need something else to protect you. Use any shield you like. I use one that protects my body from anything harmful (visualised as rose petals swirling around me- it just seemed right) and another that repels anything harmful away from me (visualised as bright lights, almost painful to look at). Sometimes, when I get bad vibes, I’ll use more and more until I feel safe. LAYER LAYER LAYER. A shield can only do one thing at a time, so if you want multiple protective actions then use more than one. You’ll know when you’ve got enough, as when you try to project you’ll feel safer.
2. Failure is ok. Honestly, I couldn’t project last night. It was hard and my brain just couldn’t get the focus and I couldn’t visualise anything. It just didn’t work, and that’s ok. Sometimes it’ll be too much for you, don’t force anything or beat yourself up over it. Stop what you’re doing, stretch your muscles and try again later. I usually wait at least until the next night (I always project at night) when I’ve found something a little too difficult. It gives me time to rest and to do some grounding.
3. You’re going into Narnia. What does that mean??- imagine a door! I spent a long time trying and trying to project into the astral realm until I realised that I simply had to open a door!! When I project, I visualise a white void full of different doors to different places on the astral realm, I walk around and find my own door or draw it to me. I turn the handle, walk through and BOOM astral realm. This can take a while and it’s hard at first, when I first tried this method I found the door, put my hand on the handle and got thrown out back into my body again. Take your time, practice and you’ll get there.
4. FFS DON’T GET LOST. When you first manage to get through the door, don’t go too far. Take your time exploring what’s around you, and anyway, it’s more fun to find every little thing that’s in the astral than just barrelling through at 100000mph and missing it. I found one of my spirit companions, A, while slowly going through this tiny patch of forest that exists in my plane. If you do go a little far, which I have done before, I looked at my wrist and found a red string wrapped around it. I followed the string back to the door. Simple.
5. Block out everything. I use white noise of a thunder storm for this, but anything will do. ‘8 Hours of’ is a good youtube channel with lots of different options for white noise. Don’t astral project for the 8 hours, but the sounds are awesome and there’s no ads that’ll interupt you.
6. Find a mirror. Not because you’re the bloody evil queen in Snow White, but because you’ll want to know what you’re astral form looks like. Go searching, use your mind’s “eye” and listen for it, you’ll know where it is. Stand in front of it and look. Don’t be afraid of what you see, your astral form might be quite different from your physical one. As someone who’s agender, my astral form is completely androgynous, but also has giant horns and 6 ENORMOUS black wings that can wrap around me and form some sort of cloak-dress-robe-thing. Yuup, it was a surprise. Just accept that this is your form, and as it’s based on your spirit, you’ll probably like it no matter what.
7. Have any deities?? You might meet them here. I worship the gaelic goddess Brighid, as well as Persephone and Hades and I’ve met them when astral projecting a few times. You can spend time with them in the astral, get to know them and even give them offerings. There is a huge area of my astral plane that is completely dead- like Pride Rock under Scar dead- and I’m currently trying to regrow it. I’ve so far grown a huge oak tree in the centre and made a pasture for Brighid as she likes to keep cattle. Hades, for some reason, wants a massive waterfall and Persephone just wants flowers- which I’ll be doing for them soon. I’ve also seen Mac Lir and Poseidon walking together off on the horizon of the ocean. I just let them do their thing.
8. Don’t upset Brendon Urie- CLOSE THE GODDAMN DOOR! You enter the astral through a door, close it behind you so that nothing gets out. When you leave, close the door extra carefully, don’t look back at it as you walk away. Close it and then leave.
9. Be careful when you’re out. When you re-enter your body it may feel weird, you might get pins-and-needles or your limbs may feel heavy or numb. Just sit or lay there for a while, give yourself time to ground and get comfortable in your body again, don’t sit up or start walking about the moment you leave the astral. Let your shields come down ONLY when you’re certain you’ve completely re-entered your body. Stretch a little and then get up. Go about your day, have a nap, go to bed, whatever you want to do.
Feel free to add your own!!!!

The 3 Liliths 🥀💀🕷
There are 3 different Liliths (and one Mean Lilith) that averages all three into one.
Asteroid Lilith, Black Moon Lilith, & Dark Moon Lilith.
This is a pretty good video that covers the mythology behind Lilith, if you are unfamiliar with her backstory. The 3 Liliths are distinct in each their own way and depicts a different portion of the Lilith story/myth, carrying with it its own unique symbolism based on that part of the story. Hence, each type of Lilith corresponds to a specific segment within the overarching “dark feminine” theme that we associate with Lilith in the natal chart.
The Asteroid Lilith represents the first stage within her story - as she was suppressed, humiliated, and flees into the wilderness. The Black Moon Lilith is associated with how she transmuted her distorted image back into a natural, healthy expression. The Dark Moon Lilith represents the pain she experienced while in exile and how she plotted and executed her revenge.
💥ASTEROID LILITH 💥
a solid representation found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
keywords: rebellion, exile, fighting for freedom, confrontational, equality, impulsive, unconventional, asexual, instinctual, hands-on
Lilith’s earthy and practical representation, as she existed as a human
her protest at not being equal to Adam
🌚 BLACK MOON LILITH 🌚
consists of the True/Osculating (the one most emphasized astrologers, they place this as the most important to examine), and the Mean/average (the “default” Lilith selection on astro.com, said to be insufficient and unreliable)
keywords: magic vs sorcery, forbidden fruit, angels vs demons, animal magnetism, seduction, supernatural, intuition, psychic, charisma, addiction, obsession
not a physical body in space, but a point of alignment - the apogee of the Moon’s orbit, where she is farthest from Earth in her orbit
BML ties into the forbidden fruit part of the myth, where Lilith comes back as a serpent (symbolizing occult knowledge)
🌪DARK MOON LILITH 🌪
takes the form of a sphere-shaped dust cloud and is known as a “ghost moon”
keywords: vengeance, demons, the shadow, rage, anti-mother, nightmares, ghosts, depth psychology, emotional pain, madness, catharsis
associated with the hurt, nasty side of Lilith when she killed babies as revenge for being banished
this side of Lilith can be used constructively without the ego, to release negativity through creative means
DML can work either two ways: either you face your demons and release them safely, or bury them, running the risk of them taking control over us psychologically
To find out your three Liliths, go to Astro.com under Extended Chart Selection
Note: the “Lilith” that is in the selection box is the Mean/average Lilith that takes your Asteroid Lilith/BML/and DML points and averages them. This Mean Lilith is advised by many astrologers to not be used, as it should be examined in its individual parts since each part is slightly different and plays its own unique role, as described above.

As with everything else, be sure to take into account house position of your three Liliths, as this will show where these energies are acting out in your life.
Where Asteroid Lilith is will show up in a more practical, manifestation because it is a physical body and representation of Lilith, its is what we can see, the action we are consciously taking.
BML is much more of a psychological manifestation, so you are more likely to feel or sense its influence rather than see it played out tangibly.
DML is also very subtle and subconscious in its outward expression, it can play out subconsciously and may not be something you notice at first, although it is still very much present and acting out.

Aspects are also important of course, and you can end up working with your Lilith positions or against it.
Supportive aspects from the Sun and Mars can show a constructive relationship with Lilith - you are able to work your dark feminine with your masculine energies, rather than against them.
Supportive aspects with Moon and Venus help to easily blend together and harmonize your conventional and unconventional feminine energies.
Afflictions to Lilith point to a repression and burying of your natural, instinctive side, rather than embracing or expressing it.
Contacts with the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant will make Lilith very prominent and emphasized in your personality, and others will be quick to notice.
Contacts with the Descendant will bring out Lilith in your interactions with others, or you may attract Lilith types.
Contacts with the Midheaven will bring our your Lilith to the public, as they will see or hear about that side of you and may possibly fear you.
Very similar to Pluto, the way to work with your Lilith is to embrace it for what it is and to allow yourself to be “too much” sometimes, regardless of what other people think of you - the only way out of the darkness is to go through it.
