I have spent a lot of the past 7 years doing alterations along with my custom design work, but really mostly alterations. So when I do get to create pieces from idea to complete garment, I am finding I am not always getting it done as quickly as I think I used to.
It feels like it takes more fittings and more time adjusting, and tweaking, and it gets frustrating, as my expectations of my own skills are high.
In the world we live in, clients may also have the idea that clothing can be made quickly and may not understand why so many fittings are needed, why it does not just come together.
And when people are so used to “fast fashion" and have so many options already, having a piece of clothing made - especially a piece that is one of a kind, personally designed and fit to them, it should make sense that it will take time.
And I am one person doing all of the work in my studio.
But I stil feel a pressure of doing it quickly. And that causes me to occasionally take short cuts -which I know will send me back to do it the long way anyway.
Thus. this week, a dress that “should” have taken about 15 hours to make, have instead taken 25 hours. And it is not finished yet.
I also have sent out, in the past month, about 5 custom dresses that were 90-95% awesome , as well as another 5 bridal alterations that elicited “happy dances” - making them 100% awesome.
And I needed to remind myself of this, so thanks for reading - or at least scanning over this.
Self employment, artistic work, creating beautiful things, it’s all a mixed blessing. And sometimes giving birth to amazingness is painful.
