In truth, kind people are Will Graham's weakness. After their first encounter, Will doesn't want anything to do with Hannibal. But Hannibal barges in—with homemade food. Due to how their previous conversation went, Will is more offensive with his words now; he's rude, waspish, unsociable—not giving him a second chance. Hannibal, in contrast, is docile, placating, and reconciliatory—forcibly moulding a second chance. He takes Will's side this time instead of playing with him, telling him Jack is wrong to think him fragile. Then the greatest manipulation: he saves Abigail (even though he is the cause of her current predicament). He takes charge of first aid especially when Will is failing, he accompanies her in the ambulance, and then he SLEEPS or "sleeps" next to her sickbed. Hannibal successfully manufactures his second chance. Will is impressed, now respects Hannibal, and sort of trusts him—all because he's kind, seemingly contrary to his first impression. Following this, Hannibal remains exceedingly kind towards Will throughout season 1. Weaponised compassion, that's how he snares him.

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's relationship is interesting because Xie Lian's story is based on conflict in ideology. It's right and wrong and moralistic from 0 too an extreme 100. Hua Cheng's story in contrast is based on human connection and selfishness. He's not bothered with the state of the world nor the role he plays within it; he wants to forge a genuine connection with the person he admires and wants to be nearby. Xie Lian is digging out his own face, slapping himself against a cruel and unrelenting world; Hua Cheng is gritting his teeth around loneliness and a desire to treat Xie Lian as precious as he believes him to be. You would think they should be in separate stories but they're not. Instead they meet in the middle: It's because of their friendship, comraderie, and love that they're able to identify and take down the big villain. It's because they have each other's backs that they don't fail this time. Just having each other is enough to make the world not only bearable, but also a happy place to be in.

Reading progress -- I love how Xiao Chiye is just a bitch at his core but puts on this deliberate, good-for-nothing romeo persona that people completely fall for—except for Lanzhou.

Will is truly interesting—he has all this rage for and wants retribution from Hannibal, but he turns himself blunt and plays the patient fisherman in season 2 to draw him out. This is because 1. It's the right thing to do; catch serial killers like he always does and 2. He can't seem to hate him. He doesn't want to kill him.

But he fantasizes about killing him. Will thinks of being violent towards Hannibal; speaks of it, dreams of it, fantasizes about it. Doesn't do it. Can't do it. Not yet. However he takes it out on others; Ingram, Randall, Mason. He lets them bear repercussions because they're irredeemable unlike Hannibal. Which is fucking weird because none of these people medically abused him and made him think himself a stranger. This is a grave crime, clearly.

This is all to say, Will's priorities are uncommon. He projects: he hates Ingram because he reflects a one-note Hannibal who's not very interesting, and so it's easier to despise him. He attacks Randall in apparent self-defense but what is also a percerted expression of anger for Hannibal. He hits Mason because he hurts Margot; an innocent. He's clearly centering Hannibal in all this, but is unable to hurt Hannibal himself. Instead he takes it out on others; like he's going at a punching bag until his knuckles go raw.

Started reading QJJ: so far, huge fan of Zuchuang and Chiye not remembering each other's names in the exact same way, going "that Shen...that Xiao..." And having the person next to them remind them although they're able to memorize each other's relatives' names just fine.

I personally think if Will Graham died, Hannibal would grow more violent because he's so angry. There would be no joy in fucking around anymore; now it's a form of self-expression. If Hannibal died, Will would become like Bella when Edward left her for a wee bit. He'd be depressed and life would pass him by.
