“Were you trying?”

          how is she supposed to answer that ?? she was seventeen, OF COURSE they weren’t trying. gabriella gives the younger girl an odd look, shaking her head exasperatedly. “ what do you think viv ?? troy had his whole basketball career ahead of him and i was supposed to go and study medicine. we’re also both, you know, seventeen. you really have to ask that ?? ”

“Let’s get you to the shower, you’re covered in sweat.”

          nightmares had never been something that had plagued gabriella — ever in her life. maybe when she was a child and monsters lurked in the shadows of her closet and under her bed, but after she was old enough to think logically and realistically, there’d been nothing to be afraid of. since she moved so much she never had those terrifying ‘ first day of school ’ nightmares where you forgot to wear pants or all your teeth fall out. sleep was a peaceful experience for her.

          she nodded mutely, unmoving from her upright position on their bed, her arms wrapped around her knees, clutching them to her chest. she felt troy shift off his side of the bed and pad over to her, gently pulling her out of her fetal position and pulling her up so she was standing. her knees felt wobbly but he was there to keep her upright and guide her to the bathroom that adjoined their bedroom. as she walked she tried to shake her dreams off, but the task seemed to be more difficult with every step.

          noah. they were going to name their baby boy noah. he was going to have troy’s hair and gabriella’s eyes and he would like sports and be smart and love his sister and be their boy. their son. he was going to be all those things. he WAS. 

          her throat tightens and she can feel her eyes brim with tears, so she clenches them together tightly, hoping to simply BLINK the dreams away like she was blinking her tears away. she was barely aware as troy sat her down on the toilet seat and got to work turning on the shower. her hands sat limp in her lap as she stared at a dent in the white wall directly in front of her. 

          the accident had been months ago. after three weeks of neglecting her family, her daughter, troy finally pulled her out of her isolated depression and she thought she was getting better. she thought it was going to get easier. it wasn’t. she didn’t think it ever would. how could you just move on from something like that ?? 

          she tuned back into her surroundings when troy started to pull her pajamas off and she could hear the whoosh of the shower beside her. as he bent down on his knees to help her out of her pj bottoms she made eye contact with him and couldn’t keep the walls she’d built intact. her detached stupor broke and she reached out to the love of her life, pulling him against her as tight as she could. her face buried into his white sleep shirt and her cries were not quiet. she didn’t even attempt to restrain herself.

          they were going to name him noah.

          “ well isn’t that just delightful. i’ll just face away from everyone so they don’t notice i’m pregnant. ”

          “ yeah, we are. but why does that matter so much to you troy ?? i thought you were a good person, that’s why i — i — ugh !! ” she crossed her arms and looked down at the ground in frustration. “ this stupid idea of different worlds shouldn’t matter. ”
