When deciding on what film I want to chose for my essay I originally considered using Coco. I wanted to choose this film because of the culture and the history of day of the dead in Mexico.

Thomas Downing BA1b: Narritive Week #6 This week we looked at visual storytelling as well as the unique language of animation. During this lecture I had in my mind what question I wanted to pick as well as a more clear idea on how I would start to write up my essay. This lecture was useful for me because this essay covered the final areas to think about when writing our essay. For next time I want to improve the way I write my notes up during these lectures so it’s a lot easier for me to look back at. I can use this weeks lecture as a starting point for writing up my essay now that I have all the key bits of information I would need.

Thomas Downing BA1b: Narrative Week #5 This week we looked at the hero’s journey as well as some unconventional or experimental narratives. During this lecture I was thinking how I could potentially use people mentioned in the lecture like Christopher Vogler in my essay. This lecture was helpful because it touched upon the hero’s journey which is useful for me especially as this is something I want to look at in my research. Next time I want to note key parts that I need to look at on my research and why I put those notes there. I can use this weeks lecture to make myself think in the future about things such as the hero’s journey when writing about narrative.

Thomas Downing BA1a: Narrative Week #4 This week we watched the film up, did a plot overview and thought about the stages of the story and how it fit into stages according to Christopher Vogler. During the film I was thinking more about the characters, their archetypes as well as paying close attention to the plot in stages. This was successful for me as it gave me a clear example of how you can use Christopher Vogler’s stages in an animated film such as up. If I was to do this again I would start putting notes during the film about key points in the film so when looking back it would be easier to remember. I can use this week in the future to apply the 12 stages of the hero’s journey to a film easier now that I have already done this previously.

Thomas Downing BA1b: Narrative Week #3 This week on the narrative project we looked at fairy tales. Their role in animation and its origins.

During this lecture I was considering a fairy tale for my essay. I was thinking about what I would need to think about when choosing a fairy tale and the question that I would need to answer. This lecture helped me think about what I could talk about if I decided to pick a fairy tale for my lecture because before this lecture I was unsure on what I would talk about. This lecture made me think about improving my research and what I could talk about in my essay. Thinking about things such as the historical element. I am going to take what I learnt from this lecture and use it to help decide on what question I want to choose for my essay now that I am more aware of what to think about when picking a fairy tale.

Week #2

This week on the narrative project we looked at conflict vs non-conflict plot types and also got told what questions we would have to choose from in our essay. During this lecture I was analyzing the question that we would choose from, thinking about what I would need to talk about and what film I would talk about. This was useful for me because I now knew what I needed to answer in the essay and start to think about what research I would need to do to help me write up my essay. I am going to start deciding what film and question I want to talk about earlier on this time to improve my essay compared to last time so I don’t fall behind.

I can use this weeks lecture to begin to know what research I need to make and what questions I have to choose from to answer in my essay.

Thomas Downing BA1b: Narrative

Week #1

This week on the narrative project we touched upon what the essay would be this time around. Going into more detail about story, plot and so on.

During this lecture I was thinking about what animated film I would pick to write about as well as the types of questions we would be given further down the line.

This was a good introduction into the project and it definitely got me thinking about what I would like to write about as well as how I will manage my time differently compared to the previous essay.

I am going to improve upon my research moving forward into this narrative project by starting earlier on. This way I can spend more time drafting and reiterating my essay.

I can use this weeks lecture to start to look at what animated film I would like to choose as well as a starting point to what kind of research that I will need to make.
