“As a medical man, you are aware, Watson, that there is no part of the body which varies so much as the human ear. Each ear is as a rule quite distinctive, and differs from all other ones. In last year’s Anthropological Journal you will find two short monographs from my pen upon the subject.”

Holmes' two short monographs, like many of his other works, have yet to surface. But at the end of 1893, only a few months before his return from the dead, there appeared in The Strand Magazine a suspiciously anonymous essay on the subject, split over two issues. Titled "A Chapter on Ears" and starting with the immortal words “It is sad to contemplate our lack of literature on ears,” the first instalment was published right before "The Naval Treaty" and was profusely illustrated with dozens of famous ears.

I think Watson does make a fair number of deadpan jokes in his narration, like when he talks about his and Holmes' differing ideas about indoor target practice.

I am thinking about the beginning of Holmes's and Watson's relationship. We all know Sherlock Holmes enjoys being praised complimented on his deductions, so much he even blushes when Watson does it impulsively. I think it is safe to say that this endears Holmes to Watson, but also the other way round - Holmes enjoys Watson's company (for many reasons, but this is one). He enjoys being around someone who makes him feel good about himself.

And this made me think ... the one thing that immediately makes *me* want to marry a person is when they are laughing about my jokes. And if I think they are funny too, I will very desperately much try to become their friend.

So, I think it would be super cute if Holmes thinks Watson is hilarious. If Watson makes really dry, deadpan jokes he did not include in his stories because it doesn't seem fitting to him, but they just send Holmes. (Yes, I'm thinking of the Clive Merrisson laugh.) I imagine Watson making a remark that he knows nobody else will understand but it makes Holmes gasp and his eyes twinkle and he will snort very indelicately at a crime scene.

I just ... I love them so much. They are having such a good time with each other. Waaaahhhhh <3 <3 <3

Aww man I'll just add that to all the reasons I find Shadowlands emotionally devastating.

(Love that Edward Hardwicke also plays a loveable former military man in it, though!)

I haven't read the golden prince nez so I have no idea what happens but someone mentioned the other day on here that Mycroft was there so...

Let's hope I'm not so sick that I can't take the story in haha

I was so sad about the bit where Mycroft and Hopkins go and heckle a women's suffrage rally, especially because I was on the cusp of really enjoying it and feeling it was an Iconic Scene, if only Mycroft had just sat there dozily and observed proceedings. There's something quite funny to me about him just plonking himself down in the middle of a meeting full of women and blithely observing.

Realistically I guess it makes sense for a man of his station/class/race/profession to consider the suffragists a bunch of silly noisy women, but I like Mycroft characterisation where he ploughs his own furrow a bit more than.

We discussed it in LfW and came up with two theories:

Mycroft supports votes for women because he would quite like all these protesting ladies to be quiet, and because he sees it as an inevitable outcome which he'd like to hurry up and happen so he can factor it into all his calculations.

Or

Mycroft doesn't support women's suffrage because he doesn't support suffrage at all, and thinks that things would be much neater and more predictable with some kind of sophocracy.

I had no.jdea what was coming in the story except that 'letha paper knife bit'

I love how eagerly the Inspector meets Mycroft

And the way Mycroft stops smiling when Mrs Hudson says 'you miss the doctor'

And the way Mycroft is just waiting for Sherlock to hand over the evidence🤩

Also this whole scene is just. Beloved

Also the way Sherlock is like Wait what do you mean when they tell him not to come in. And mycroft comes in after him and just waits like you aren't getting us out

The two of them are having so much fun and then there's Mycroft in the bg haha

I love the way everyone is so out of their depth when both brothers are together. The inspector is like Woah there's two of them and I've lost the story haha

And how offended Sherlock is at finding out Mycroft has gotten their Father's magnifying glass lol

Maybe it's just me but Sherlock looks so happy that for once he's not recognised and also angry at it a bit

And how Sherlock puts his scarf on the ground love this guy

And he's genuinely surprised when she thanks him

And tbh I lost the plot aft this Sherlock and Mycroft separated Mycroft pointed he inspector towards Abigail they were shouted at so much to be quite 😂

And meanwhile Sherlock is just thinking and then in the end it's neither of them and Mycroft knows

But doesn't mention it??

It's all so insane

Which half-finished Watson is a Time Lord fic should I work on?

So... I've realised that I've ended up accumulating a slightly embarrassing number of semi-completed Watson Is A Time Lord fics. All of these are at least a couple of pages, often much more. (And this is just me, there are even MORE things I know my cowriters have in the works!)

I can't decide which one to work on, so I guess this is my attempt to put it to a public vote and see if that helps sway me!

Gallifrey Is Back AU - It turns out that Gallifrey wasn't destroyed in the Time War after all. Watson is overjoyed to discover he isn't the last of his kind and to show Holmes is place of origin, but he's outgrown the rigid and xenophobic Time Lord society and is ready to Be A Disruption.

Her Ladyship befriends a kid - Her Ladyship rescues a little boy who was freezing on the streets of London, and looks after him until her Captain can help. Linear organic beings are still a bit of a mystery to her, but she does her best.

The Island, Holmes POV - A while ago I wrote some chapters where Watson ended up in Torchwood's clutches, living on their facility on an island. This would return to that and show Holmes' pov of tracking Watson down and rescuing him.

Watson + Emilie - Watson goes to visit Holmes' mother during her final illness and keeps her company. Honestly I kind of just wanted to shove these two together and watch them interact, not much plot!

Uh Oh, Watson Regenerated - (Is the name of the document this is in, so enjoy that). Rathbone/Bruce AI - A confused man accosts Holmes wearing Watson's clothes. Apparently Watson has regenerated, but Holmes struggles to feel the same affection for this new body, and begins to suspect that this is not Watson at all...
